I had a picture of a 5020 with a Detroit engine hanging in my living room years ago. My wife forced me to take the picture out to the shop beacuse it leaked oil on the couch. 🤣
Those old 2 stroke Detroit diesels are interesting engines. I had one in a Dynahoe 190-4 backhoe. That thing could sit for 8-9 months and it would fire right up every time. Probably one of the few engines that there is no real need for a redline because you reach point of not being able to stand the noise long before you get to redline. If I remember correctly the 4-53N I had in that backhoe was rated at 2700rpm and I think I got it to 2500rpm once and almost ripped a hole in space time, thank goodness Captain Marvel was there.
Gotta love the sound of a 2 stroke diesel. Use to rebuild boat engines that used twin turbo feeding the supercharged 871. The boat manufacture upped the injector size to meet speed requirements and it burned sleeves and heads regularly. Reduced injector size and no more issues
I know of a collector here in southern New Jersey who has a handful of 5010's and 5020's converted to 8v71 and 12v71 Detroit Diesels. They turn a lot of heads at the local pulls. One of the V12-powered 5010's is pretty famous here on RUclips somewhere.
I ran that engine in a gmc road tractor 40 years ago an still have the God dam ringing in my ears , you had to have the engine wide open all the time to make power . You could hear my truck running across to counties.
I love Detroits. I repowered a Steiger Bearcat 11 which originally had a Cat 3208 (210 HP) I replaced it with a Detroit 6V-92TA with 370 HP. With no other modifications I have run 4000 trouble free hours. Lots of fun and it’s actually a couple decibels quieter than the Cat.
Being a retired Army Maintenance Soldier, I know that Detroit Diesels were the primary engines in track vehicles back in the day. The 6V53T was in M113 Series -- mostly personnel carriers. The 8V71T was in Howitzers primarily but also M551 Sheridans, Ammunition Carriers, and the light tracked recovery vehicle. Soldiers would run the 6V53T at idle to stay warm or for mission reasons causing them to overheat which would ruin the engine -- We replaced tons of them in my 7 years in Germany.
My hearing loss from an early age was from the 5020 series tractors, then 10 years later I got a 8v71 in a truck, I can’t imagine a tractor with that engine, it would be deafening and the fuel efficiency wasn’t great either.
First thing I’d do is lose the stupid straight pipe! Sounds cool for a video or at a tractor pull...sure as hell don’t want to listen to it ALL DAY doing field work ESPECIALLY without the cab! Great tractor, nice job.
2 bottom plow, disc, planter, combine and corn picker and manure spreader. We also had 1942 Ford tractor. We had 32 head of Holstein cows to milk twice a day. We had Surge electric Milkers. We were petty busy. It was my dad and I. 1959 mom and dad divorced and the farm and equipment was sold. Sad days. I hated to see the farm go
I love the 2 stroke howl. They would tear up but we shamelessly took stuff to the limit. I spent hours drinking beer with the guys, lapping valves and tweaking those engines for more power. They were fast.. One of those engines may have made it into someone’s pickup truck. I digress.. beautiful tractor man. :-)
Have lots of go fast cars, class 8 trucks, and tractors. My question/concern would be at what point do you overpower the rest of the driveline and associated systems and start breaking things?? Cool factor is high. But how do you make it live??
Original stock horse power was maybe 130 tops? Spent many a day on one of these back in the 70's here in the Mississippi Delta. This thing is smokin' hot!!
Had wheat farmer friends that were seeding with D6s that had been repowered with v8 cat truck engines.....and then upgraded to D9Gs. I haven't seen them in a long time but they probably went to D10s
Most of those leaks were at the blower drive shaft, mechanics breaking rings at overhauling, dirt getting in intake system , from not understanding the Detroit compresses it's air, most cases a oil bath filtering system would capture most if the dirt, especially on off road applications .the late 92 series took care of the leaking areas, especially the silver d Dec engines
Video is great, but the audio is about half the volume of the others videos I've watched this evening. Just a fyi. Love this tractor, very rare powerhouse!
Ed Mead Amboy il did it earlier than kinze. Around 1970 he switched from 871 to 903 Cummins better low rpm power. My family had 5020 903 conversion in 1971 pulled 7/16 plow my grandfather said it played with it.
Yes the 8V71T was had some balls. I'm trying to get a 1968 KW with 318 beach c'd like to put a turbo on each cylinder bank. I worked for a guy that had 2 of that setup in a prime mover truck.
Back in the early 90s I saw someone with a Detroit powered Oliver tractor, probably an 8v71 as well, no turbo, he out pulled everything at the event. I don't know if it was a sister to this series of repowers or what, but it was mean.

Detroit Diesel. The worlds most efficient engine at converting diesel fuel into noise!
That sums it up well.
I listen to one for about 3000 miles every week.
a beautiful noise :)
That's why my hearing is bad -- we would "ground hop" them in the Army Maintenance Shop for a few seconds -- no muffler of course.
And I love them for it

More than likely it did. they need to have one at the Large Hadron Collider to split those particles completly!
