I'm a retired Canadian forestry fire fighter. Using water from a hydrant on a forest fire, is like trying to put out a fire by spitting on it. Canada sent water bombers, equipment and more trained fire fighters from 4 provinces, down to LA. The time to look at how we can prevent this from happening is not now. Do that after the fires are out. Lets focus on saving lives and putting the fires out.

LA wouldn't be in this spot (where they need external international support) if they had competent leadership that understood the importance of a strong fire department. Leadership in the county also missed (arguably intentionally ) all of the warning signs and had close to no preventative measures in place. This was a ticking time bomb that County leadership and State leadership both neglected.
We have military equipment and machines and personnel which can go and destroy a whole country in one night with giant airplane, dropping giant bombs and miss those. I can travel anywhere, but when it comes to helping our own people here fight simple little fire, we will act as if it’s a wildfire and today’s modern world and technology that’s BS.

It is my understanding the that pilots operating in the area have special certification licenses, and they operate under Visual Flight regulations although the air is filled with smoke. Air traffic controllers have no specific role in the operations.
Truly devastating. South Bay resident here. Was there not too long ago walking around the farmers market and I can’t believe the aerial footage. That is INSANE how many people lost their homes. The black and white ashes..those are rows and rows, blocks and blocks of homes. Maui now seemed like a premonition. Truly heartbreaking.
CA is a paradise, but too many people are living there to be sustainable without draining the CO River/aquifers and erasing local ecology with concrete. Irrigated farming in the desert is also simply disappointing to me.

That one untrained man was able to save a few homes. Can you imagine if everyone living in a fire prone zone had the training and a few resources available? As well as some organization. Each block should be coordinated, with a "Spot Fire Leader". They get training and then organize and train the people on their block how to fight those small spot fires that happen far out from the main fires. They take turns watching, and alerting other block leaders as needed. Everyone on the block empties their big garbage cans and sets them in front of their houses full of water. Maybe hand pumps to use if water is turned off. These steps should be taken as soon as the possibility exists that spot fires could happen. If people knew what to do instead of just waiting to run when told, there would certainly be far less loss of life and property.

I have heard firemen and an arborist say these type of fires are not normal. Trees, plastic garbage cans, and blue roofs didn't burn in Lahaina. Glass and metals melted. Not normal for forest fires. One of the two fires was caused by power lines sparking in 100mph winds. The one by the beach is still under investigation

The cause of how the fires start d is not the most important because it could have been intentional or even a car accident. The issue is why where the open areas (federal, state and city) allowed to build up years of wild brush with no abatement. Like burning paper machete driven by high winds. That one untrained man was able to save a few homes. Can you imagine if everyone living in a fire prone zone had the training and a few resources available? As well as some organization. Each block should be coordinated, with a "Spot Fire Leader". They get training and then organize and train the people on their block how to fight those small spot fires that happen far out from the main fires. They take turns watching, and alerting other block leaders as needed. Everyone on the block empties their big garbage cans and sets them in front of their houses full of water. Maybe hand pumps to use if water is turned off. These steps should be taken as soon as the possibility exists that spot fires could happen. If people knew what to do instead of just waiting to run when told, there would certainly be far less loss of life and property.
Used to be a bucket brigade would form and people with buckets, blankets, axes and shovels would do all they could to save their property. Now, Americans are so gutless and lazy, they'll run away then complain that somebody else didn't make a stand.
