Ive just listened through John Shelby Spong's interview and found it inspiring , and a wake up call for myself and many others. Embracing God and a faith is to 'be all that we can be' , and letting go of the fear was instilled many years ago and seeks to hold us back .Keep the Faith R
Richard, thanks for your insightful words. I wanted to let you know that we just had the bishop back on State of Belief this past weekend, and although it's not a video interview there's a lot there that I think you'll appreciate. This man represents Christianity to me in such a way that I have remained open to accept, embrace, and continuously learn from it. I am no longer a religious person and, ironically, I thank Bishop Spong as one of those who have helped me to transcend it.
If all, or most, christians were like him, I'd not despise christianity. His story about being a child and thinking his father was wrong to tell him not to call a black man "sir" brought tears to my eyes. Most children would just accept it and think their father must be right. And for it to be over an issue such as this...wonderful.
beulahmo He's not a Christian not because I say he's not Christian, but because he does not believe in the divinity of Christ, doesn't believe in miracles and doesn't believe in the resurrection, doesn't believe in the incarnation. Therefore he is by definition not a Christian. He is an Arian heretic or any number of nasty things, but certainly not a Christian!
He is a disciple of Christ whether you like it or not. Your religious doctrines do not determine the nature or definition of God or Christ. Spat all the hateful accusations you like; your presumption to judge who is or isn't a "true" Christian is *only* an attempt to control -- i.e., have others *obey* human-defined doctrine. It's colossal human arrogance. Don't confuse this -- my faith in God and Christ is complete and unwavering; it's *you* and other religious humans in whom I have no faith.
Crusader King Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot. Only "American, conservative, backwoods, bigoted, racisit, homophobic, misogynistic, antipapist, retarded, inbreds," who have a literalistic interpretation of the Bible, & use it like some sort of, "For Dummies" manual can be a Christian. If I have said it once, I have said it 1,000 times. American Evangelicalism/Fundamentalism is solely responsible for giving Jesus, & Christianity in general, a bum's rap in our modern culture. It's becuz of American Evangelicalism/Fundamentalism, that young people have no use of Jesus, or church any more. So, take some responsibility for your own walk with Christ for once, instead of trying to find fault with other "Christians" who actually have the "balls" to use their God given brains. K, Bubs? :p
I went through a similar journey from fundamentalism to what Bishop Spong believes today. I pray that everyone will at least think for themselves, always think about what they believe and why they believe it. Change was scary at first, but now it's life-giving.
We had Bishop Spong back on State of Belief this past weekend. You may want to listen to his thoughts today, at age 86 - still as inspiring as ever: stateofbelief.com/segments/a-living-faith-bishop-john-shelby-spong/
How incredible to hear Reverend Spong address the blinders put on him by white supremacy. He might have been the first white person to hear “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” in a Black church in the south

LOL he's not Christian. Maybe that's why you like him.
Crusader King As if you're qualified to decide whether he's Christian or not. Have a seat.

mrs3Quator You have been deceived. Why did you turn from the simple truth? Please return to Jesus! God bless.

What a warm, humble man and brilliant scholar!
Too bad the heretics think he is one.
Great interview thank you. God bless you two.
Is Bishop Spong alive?
Although I am a nonbeliever, I admire bishop Sponge, he is a man of wisdom.
