The Chernobyl mini series, to me, is hands down the BEST series in the last decade if not all-time! Everything about the series was just masterfully done - the script was perfect and the acting from EVERY CHARACTER was supreme - giving a harrowing and haunting feel that respectfully represents the sheer horror and gravity of the tragedy. I also love the fact that where the series definitely comes across as critical of the system in lying and covering up, it also celebrates appropriately the heroism from those within the system who prevented a global catastrophe from becoming even more damaging. From those leading the clean-up efforts like Legasov and Shcherbyna, to the fire fighters, to the plant workers like Akimov and Toptunov, to the divers, the miners, the liquidators, the animal control crew... you cannot but have a deep sense of gratitude towards their sacrifices.
The only negative I would point out from the show was that Dyatlov was portrayed too strongly as a villain. From what I can learn from the accident, he was definitely not a likeable man and he was reckless in his actions, which did contribute to the accident, but the show seemed to take liberty in suggesting that he was in active denial of the accident, which made the impact that much worse and directly led to the deaths of someone like Stinikov. From what I did learn, Dyatlov, while not understanding how the reactor could possibly explode, knew that it did, and did try to help the situation until he himself fell sick.
