    I'd love to see a video that actually compares two guitars of the exact same model, one which you consider 'dog' vs a 'ringer'. How big is the audible difference? Does interchanging the parts around (swapping necks, pickups, etc) make the bad guitar better? Might make for an interesting video and follow up to Jim Lill's recent videos...

    • @Lantertronics
      @Lantertronics 2 года назад +4

      I've been thinking about that question a lot lately... I think it would be interesting to focus on playability vs. tone, and also how playability effects tone. The instrument makes the sound but it's also a user interface, and if the guitar is hard to play you will have a hard time getting a good tone about it. On Jim Lill's "air guitar" video I conjecture slight differences in tone mostly arise from the way he has to hold his various instruments differently, and in the case of the air guitar, not be able to hold it at all. ;)
      When guitarist talk about the "resonance" of their "tonewood" in an electric guitar, I wonder if the guitarist feeling the vibration of the guitar forms a kind of haptic feedback that the guitarist perceives the makes them perceive the sound differently, even if electrics with different wood bodies sound the same upon playback.
      I'm reminding of something Christian Henson said (at least I think it was him) about mixing concertos, that seeing the soloist accounts for 1.5 dB on the mixing desk. If you mix a live broadcast and it sounds well balanced, when mixing later for a purely audio experience you need to boost the soloist a bit.
      Humans use all their senses holistically when perceiving sound. I'd argue even smell sometimes -- the smell of an acoustic guitar can put you in a certain headspace.

      @@Lantertronics Right, I agree and I think that a respectable execution of my video suggestion for Rhett would include a detailed look at the difference in playability or feel between the guitars and how that 'feel' differences influences the sound.
      My question mostly comes from countless interviews with artists saying how a certain guitar they bought 'rang like a bell' or was the best Les Paul they played in the entire shop or is an 'exceptionally good one' in terms of tone, or how after a headstock repair the guitar sounded better, or how a guitar 'opened up' when the swapped the neck out because the body and neck didn't jive. And they often say it like it was unanimous, like an unspoken agreement between players that a certain guitar just has the vibe and is a primo example. I want to put that thing to the test - how big of a difference is there really in just the sound between the kind of American Tele that Rhett would pick up and go 'yes, this has the thing!' vs the exact same model that he played for a bit and went 'nah, this one just doesn't have it'. Is it all in the feel? How big is the audible difference?
      Obviously this will be a highly subjective and non-scientific approach. But at least it'd give us an example of Rhett taking us through his process and showing us what he looks for in the guitar's sound and what makes a 'ringer' vs 'dud' to him. Certainly feel will effect that, but I think the tonal results of that difference in guitar and feel are equally interesting (and more easily captured via video)

    • @droliver
      @droliver 2 года назад +2

      I think a lot of what Rhett is describing is more mental/psychological in his relationship to those guitars then physical characteristic of similar models there.

    • @jakestewartmusic
      @jakestewartmusic 2 года назад

      Right, some (or all) of this might be psychological - I think that's really the point of the comparison. How much of an audible difference is there? Or is more in the head or hands?
      I'm also curious about this phenomenon I hear of with custom builders pairing specific bodies and necks together to achieve some optimal sympathy or resonance. Fender Custom Shop taps on necks and bodies, other builders swap stuff around until they find a good combo. Even heard of personal accounts of players who change the neck on a guitar with the same spec and the guitar 'opens up' or 'comes alive'. It's like it's not even about maple neck with ash body, it's like THIS neck with THAT body. Is that malarky? Is it all in their head? Or can mismatching two specific pieces (or indeed, any other number of parts on the guitar) create a jive guitar?
      I think the above point would be explored if someone takes the time to swap components around between a 'ringer' and a 'dud', after indeed demonstrating how big of a sonic difference there is. Perhaps we'll get to that very first stage and discover that like you mentioned, it's all psychological. Perhaps the difference between a guitar Rhett thinks is a ringer is hardly noticeable compared to a dud. And the thing is less about sonic differences between like guitars but all a question of feel.

    • @droliver
      @droliver 2 года назад +1

      @@jakestewartmusic the evidence from guitar, piano, violins, cellos, etc.... is that a great deal of the perception of instruments quality/tone is from the visual aesthetic and expectations (ie. believing a Stradivarius violin sounds better then a contemporary violin.....because it has to be). When blind listening tests have been done, it's been clear people's biases come into play if they know which instrument is which.
      That recent video of someone showing pickups from his Tom Anderson guitar were literally indistinguishable whether mounted in a guitar body or amplifying strings strung across space from two fixed points was pretty telling that the physics of string to magnet to amp are what we hear with solid body electric instruments and that the body material is mostly an aesthetic appointment in the chain.

    I have a Hohner acoustic that my mother in law bought in 1978 for $99. It sounds great! My buddy played it at a gig with his band. It has a lot of resonance and really warm tones. It a sentimental piece, not really worth anything money wise. But she would have loved hearing it played on stage like that. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean bad.

    I've been playing guitar for 30 years and while I agree on all thing mentioned the most important thing for me is how it looks. I know that looks doesn't make a guitar good or bad but it dictates to me if I'm going to pick it up or not. If it's an ugly guitar, in my opinion that could mean a colour I don't like or the a body shape or size I don't like, then I won't pick it up, I won't even try it, no matter how good it is. So for me it starts with appeal :)

My only issue with Danos - over the years, I've played several and they all have the same Masonite semi - hollow, two slab composition, twin lipstick pickups, and rosewood fretboards. I mean, they all sound alike, they just look different. I love the vintage sound, though. no complaints.

    Late in the broadcast - titanium. I have a Gibson USA SG with zero fret titanium nut and saddles. The tuners have been upgraded to Gotoh and the pickups are Gibson Classic 57's - it has incredible sustain and is cleaner / brighter than a Standard Les Paul which I put down to the solid body mahogany and the titanium - I would say that as well as the lightness, the value is also in the hardness and the fact that they wont wear like a stock metal / cast part. They definitely have an affect on the tone though - may be too bright for some although this can be dialed back with the amp and settings.

    The drying out over time is more of a curing process. The difference being, wood has to be in a stable environment to cure properly over a long period of time. Once it’s cut down, wood will cure over time no matter what environment it’s in. However, if it dries out before the wood has time to stabilize from the curing process, it will not hold its structure as well as a the much more rigid cured wood. That instability will lead to the wood doing a number of possible things, like shrinking, cracking, warping, twisting, etc.

      My SG Jr was given to me by my grandfather about 15 years ago. He bought it around 65 for 100 bucks and it was the only guitar he ever owned. When he gave it to me he said, play it, take care of it. Never ever sell it. Now I have a few guitars, but no guitar I have ever played makes me feel the way the SG makes me feel.

    In my somewhat limited experience with electric guitars, the aspects in Rhett's guitars that make them feel more resonant are the Jazzmaster style tremolo (Novo Serus) and wrap around tail piece (Danelectro and SG junior). Please discuss amongst yourselves. 😉

    I find that a guitar that speaks to you, that you immediately take to, that you find yourself suddenly finding creativity for you, that's a great guitar! I bought a Player Series Strat recently and I cant put it down. Is it the most expensive guitar I own? Nope! But it speaks to me in ways that other guitars I own dont

    ℹ bought the Epiphone Vintage reissue of this early 60s SG blues rock icon in crimson satin finish late 2020. Poplar body - so light but perfectly balanced - no neck dive. You can sling this axe 🎸 🪓 over your shoulder and strut and swagger 2/4 time down the main street and saunter on into your bar gig venue with a midnight shadow wannabe stubble, plug in, do a 12th fret harmonics tune, whip out that brass slide, crunch out a couple of power chords then jog into a 12 bars blues to warm up; glide into some chugging JJ Cale and then smash into some Steve Marriott Humble 🥧 Pie Live at Fillmore East. Nirvana.
    PS: Paul David the Dutch hipster guitar maven did a review of 9 ‘budget’ iterations of the big name viz ., Fender, Gibson, … which included the exact same satin finish crimson Epiphone Junior SG. It’s well worth checking out. His resulting league table based on points off for tone, built etc. Most the big name models he marked pretty damn low eg., nobody wants to run your hand up and down the neck of fretboard and get a shredded thumb and webbing. 🤕 Ouch! Long story short; the SG which he’d tossed in the air and declared, “This is a FUN 🤩 guitar 🎸!” came out on top equal (with Yamaha Pacifica * ) thus confirming my neophyte 3B choice

    I was at Long & McQuade(Canadian version of Guitar Center), and they had an old(not sure of year exactly) SG Black Beauty style Custom. What a beautiful guitar, and yeah I wad surprised how resonant it was unplugged. If I had the money, I would have gotten that one for sure! In my experiences, Gretsch Jets are the most resonant guitars of any of the mainstream brands.

    Going back to what you said about cheap car expensive guitars around 38:50… I’ve got an 2008 epiphone les paul standard plus top that added 50s wiring using the same wire fender used in the 50s, bourns 500k pots, and Seymour Duncan custom 5\ jazz pickups and the thing rips. I had 3k to spend when I bought it. I tried every Gibson in guitar center from custom shop to tributes and I landed on a used epiphone for 300.

    3 things that I care about most when I buy a guitar … how it resonates/sounds unplugged, how the neck feels and it’s price. If it has good bones I can always change the tuners/hardware and pickups.

    my first electric guitar was a Gibson SG special w/ dual hum buckers and no pick guard . I miss that axe. SG is a great player for sure.

    I think a better way to explain old wood is it hardens rather than drying. You have to have moisture but over time the resins inside the wood harden and crystalize. You get into a different set of problems with wood becoming brittle but moisture keep it from shrinking.

    40-50 percent of humidity is for acoustic guitars....but the fret sprout issue on electric guitars is due to manufacturers not drying out the wood property...I have a MIJ fender from 1994 and a MIJ ibanez RG from 1999...no fret sprout at all...I run my furnace on winter and don't see a problem...but my other guitars do get some...but gibson does better than US snd MIM fenders.
