I haven't used this camera for a couple of years and came here to familiarise myself with some of the manual settings (which I prefer). I now know things I didn't know about this camera. I'm pretty pumped. Thank you so much for a sensational tutorial.
@@sleepfiend666 Hi, funny you should ask me this now. The last few days I've been seriously thinking about selling it due to the fact I've had other cameras come to my disposal. I'm in Brisbane, Australia though. Cheers. Mark
This is a good level of demonstrations to get an orientation to these cameras. I chose the AX700 version because I already have money in audio recorders like the Tascam DR-70D, DR-40 and Zoom H1 ($20 used). They can be patched into the AX700 to get a clean sync recorded by the camera. I had expected to operate from a tripod for important work so I rig all the accessories on to that. One thing I did last year (third year of ownership) was to put tiny circular dots of hook and loop material on certain buttons to tell them apart from the rest by feel: Power - because of the number of times I accidentally hit that one and kill the camera. #2 Status Check is assigned to Menu - so I am not stretching a finger out past the display to the actual Menu button. AF/MF on the side of the lens, something I frequently change back and forth; and #6 that I have turning on/off Focus Peaking. I also got a dummy battery and fabricated a $10 NP-F battery plate plus a few feet of cable to a 5.5 mm barrel connector matched to the dummy battery and a $2 "batter tester" soldered in with 5 levels of LEDs. A spring steel belt clip on the back to hang it on the tripod or clothing and I'm good using NP-F550s and F750s. The original battery actually gives me good recording time on its own. My one gripe about the camera's build is the hinge for the display seems very weak. The closure is not firm enough to the body at all so I'm afraid it will get caught one of these times and get levered enough to break. I store it every time with an elastic band pulling the display panel in to the body. It's that loose.
Amazing tutorial! I really appreciate you taking the time to put this together. I'm coming from a photography background and my brain can match aperture/iso/shutter speed pretty easily, but gain is new to me. Finding out I could switch from gain to iso made my life way easier. I mainly bought this for family videos and occasional fun side projects, so I actually wanted the embedded date stamp. I found that it's only available with AVCHD recording mode.
Wow, you certainly have a way to cut through reading the manual! Thank you! Yeah, late comer just picked up this camera but am so impressed with all the features. Dry and boring, well damn dude, no way sugar coat the operations manual, LOL.
I've bought my camera over a year ago. Of course I'm not using it on dayly basis, that's not my main job, still it's not new for me. And I was picking up my camera again as I was watching this tutorial, and found it helpful with some of the options, to at least know what they are good for, even if I waws reading through the whole manual when I bought the camera. Nice Job. One thing I would like to know more about is the picture profile settings, and the s-log options. How it woud be the best to set the camera to have optimal recording for having a greater option of editing my footage later. Do you have a video on it? :-) Thanks!
great overview and shots! Do you know if this cam can record at 4k/60 HDR for two hours straight and not overheat in summer with stabilization and other specs on? how long would the battery last?
Unfortunately, the camera can only do 4K30, not 4K60. However, as long as you supply it power it could record continuously at any setting. I've never had it overheat or have any issues. I've used it in direct sunlight in summer and in well-below freezing temps and had no issues.
@@bigtb1717 Thank you! Would you recomnd a microphone for long durations of recording (more than an hour, less than 2) outdoors? and do you use or recomend a Gimbal? Great content! Susbscribed.
This was the best deep dive I've seen! Thank you! I used this on a camp promo project a few years back and fell in love with it. I've been using a Z6 for filming car to car shots on a custom hitch+ stabilizer mount and I'm happy to say I ordered the Ax700 and it's on its way. The thing that really irked me about using the Nikon was that it'd only output HDMI signal in the standard frame rates. I don't see why it wouldn't but do you know if the AX700 still provides HDMI signal out while in the 960 fps mode?
Not sure if HDMI out is active in super slow motion mode or not. Even if it is, I'm sure it's still just a standard framerate, not the high framerate mode. I'll check later and see.
I thought the NX80 was discontinued, but maybe some sellers still have them. The NX80 has the handle with XLR audio input jacks. It also supports 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi streaming with RTMP/RTMPS protocols. I believe that's live news-broadcaster type stuff. Not sure if it has any application for live, web streaming.
Thanks for the awesome review.I just got this camcorder and was wondering if there is a way to set the recording time to just record in 10 minute clips or of my set desired time of clips ? If so how do I make that happen ?
Hi great tutorial!! Do you have any tips about remote use? I’m experiencing what feels like a glitch - In camera mode, your exposure settings buttons work fine. Once you click “photo” on the remote, it will take a photo, but you can no longer use the buttons on the camera to adjust exposure etc. All buttons on the remote seem to not work at this point, except the photo button. Restarting the camera fixes this behavior. Any tips? It’s driving me crazy!
Having just recently purchased this camera i found your tutorial most helpful thanks.Do you have any tips or settings i should be using for filming trains up to about 75mph as i find the auto focus struggling at times to keep up.Filming in 4k & in auto. Thanks
Just received my Sony FDR-AX700 and this video has made me so much more comfortable using this camera! I have no clue, but how do you playback videos you've recorded directly on the camera??
@@user-if4jg6ul9o Sure. It's a bit large to carry around all day, depending on what all you plan to do there and what all you are carrying with you, but it's a great camera. You could also consider the Sony AX53. Not as much manual control and a bit worse dynamic range. But it's smaller, lighter and has better image stabilization.
The maximum recording bitrate is 100 megabits per second (roughly 12.5 megabytes per second). So you want a reasonably fast card, but nothing too crazy, by today's standards. It doesn't take advantage of UHS-II speeds, but those cards do work. Most cards these days would probably work. If you stick with V30 and up, you should be more than fine (V30 refers to the guaranteed minimum write speed in megabytes per second when recording video). I've used lots of different cards from Sony, Lexar, Sandisk, and Prograde Digital.
Amazing! Thank you for your fast reply, really appreciated. I have Sandisk Extreme 90MB V30. That would be enough right? I will be filming wildlife for 2 weeks in Kenya. Nothing professionally, just for fun. How many GB would you recommend? I’m not bringing my laptop, so I need enough space.
When set for 4K24, 100Mbps, a freshly formatted 64GB card estimates 81 minutes of recording time. Hopefully that gives you an idea of how much total capacity you will need based on your total, expected time recording. Sounds awesome! Have fun!
This was amazing, just upgraded from the AX43 to this one and was a bit concerned with all the additional flexibility in this one, but this answered all of the big questions I had. One small question (assuming you’re still following this), in the AX43 if I turn on auto exposure and then switch to manual, the manual setting starts from whatever the auto had set things too, and I can adjust things from there. Do you know if this one has the ability to do that as well? Or will it switch into some other default manual setting when I switch off auto Fstop/ISO/shutter speed?
Honestly, I never use full auto with this camera, so I can't recall. But I think manual mode goes back to however it was when you last used it. However, within manual mode, you can set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture/f-stop all to automatic and exposure will then be adjusted automatically. From there you can switch any one of those things into manual and start adjusting from wherever it had it.
@@bigtb1717 Thanks, that last sentence is exactly what I was asking. I don't want to go full auto, but mostly because I don't like the camera adjusting things on the fly while I'm recording, because then you occasionally get weird fluctuations in light levels as the environment changes. That said, going from a single exposure setting in the AX43 to a mix of three exposure settings that I need to learn more about is a bit daunting, so I was hoping I could basically turn each of those individually to auto (in the manual mode) and then switch them back to manual to effectively lock in that setting for the entirety of the video, making slight changes as needed.
You can do exactly that. I think I talked briefly about it in the video, but there are dedicated buttons for each of those settings. If you press one of those buttons you can highlight that setting and make changes as desired. Or you can simply press the button again and put that setting back into auto. Each setting can individually be put in auto or manually changed at any time. All this can be done while the main "Manual/Auto" switch on the back is in the manual mode. It's one of the things I like so much about this camera.
@PurpleMoosePlays As for learning those exposure settings, I have some older videos where I talk about each setting. It is labeled as "DSLR" settings, but the principals are the same for any camera. They may help. ruclips.net/video/u5lreJxnrNo/видео.html ruclips.net/video/eRfkcgGsdEQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/lAQocbM4lcs/видео.html There are videos for shutter speed, aperture (f-stop), and ISO. I'm sure there are a million and 1 other videos about these things online too that may help. So you don't have to watch mine, lol. I'm sure you can get the hang of it. Cheers!
What is getting for auto? My films all are token by auto however if looks like cut cut movements. I do jot know why. It is jot smooth movement. Quality is great but I have problem only with softness of movement of jmages.what is speed of image 25? 30? 60? Per second for automode?
Great video! Just picked up this camera for my golf channel Decent Golf. What would you recommend for filming on the course and I didn't see you actually switch into 4k mode?
I did show it in the menu, but I left it in 1080p because some options only show up in 1080p. When you ask what to use, are you asking about what settings I would recommend? If so, it's going to depend on the situation and how "manual" you want to get.
@@bigtb1717 I'll be filming outdoors mostly in the afternoons when it's pretty hot. Might be little sweaty so will need to make adjustments prior to leaving my home. I think if I can learn how to switch to 4k and use the easy nd filter switch should be good enough. I'm not scared to go manual if you can give me few tips. Thanks for responding .
Is there a limitation to 1080p 120fps? This is the number 1 selling point so far for me compared to the AX53, other than the AX53 having a built-in gimbal.
Wow, what a machine! It's impressive that you were able to recall and spout-that-all-out without delay! Audio was recorded on the camera? How do you take welding shots- does it need a helmet?
I did have to look up one or two things before I got started. I don't use a helmet or anything for recording welding arc shots. I do have a clear filter on the front to protect the lens from errant sparks/spatter. I have the camera in manual and set to manual focus. I will set the camera up and manually focus right on the middle of the spot where I'm going to weld. Then I manually set the Iris to 8.0 to 10.0, the gain as low as it will go ( -3 dB ) and the shutter to 1/576 to 1/1200 of a second. Then I turn the built-in ND filter to the highest setting and start recording. This is generally a good starting point. From there I may adjust up or down slightly, depending on what I'm welding and how much amperage.
I've only just bought this camcorder and your video has been very helpful. Just one question, how or where do I find the fade in and out function? Thank you in advance.
I'm not aware of any fade in/out options for the videos. I don't believe the camera has this function built-in. It might be an option in the mobile app that can be used with this camera, but I can't say for sure, as I've never used that app.
@@bigtb1717 thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Someone else mentioned that there was this function on the camera hence my reason for taking the plunge and buying it. I guess I’ll just need to get a decent video editing software then. Which will probably mean a whole new learning curve. My old Sony HD camcorder had the fade in and out function and this was great for music videos meaning little or no editing on the computer post production. But I am very willing to learn. Now it’s just a matter of finding the best software. Thanks again for your fast response. Your video tutorial was absolutely excellent 👍
If it turns out I'm wrong and you find a way to access this feature, let me know. I searched through everything and didn't find an option, but it's possible I've missed something.
@@bigtb1717 from what I’ve seen in your tutorial I don’t think that you’ve missed anything. It was a very good and detailed video and I certainly got a lot of very helpful tips from it. But in the off chance that I do come across a fade in and out function I will let you know. Once many thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated 👍
I recently purchased this camera at Sony Chile (where I'm based) for my dad's watch repairments and assembly work. Thank you for clearing things out and going through the entire menu/settings. The versatility of this camcorder is insane. I didn't know that many of the greyed-out settings were due to being only enabled for 1080p res. I haven't owned a Sony in over a decade and was very unfamiliar with the labels. It is not a perfect camera though (no cam is really), and if Sony decides to update it, I wish they include 4K@60 10bit 4:2:2 color (HDR). Sony will probably add 8K and charge more. I'm still trying to figure out how to upload HDR (HLG pic profile 10) to RUclips because directly from the .mp4 file does NOT work. Does it need to be rendered forcibly at 10bit through non-linear editing software to work on TY? Keep the excellent content!
You are correct. Unfortunately, one of the upload requirements on RUclips's end is 10 or 12 bit color for HDR files. I totally agree. Not a perfect camera, but a very versatile camera.
I agree. You’re amazing. And you’ve got the voice for it. You’re a pro. Thank you so much! Do you happen to know how to record and take digital photo stills whilst recording?
@@bigtb1717 so strange you say that. I tend to agree. However this is what the website says of the place I bought the camera from. 20 MP Still Images Capture high-quality 20 MP still images, as well as 14.2 MP (16:9) and 15 MP (4:3) images. You can also take 2.1 MP images while recording video.
@@IsraelHenriques I agree. But I tried based on someone else's question once before and dug through Sony documentation where I found it said that pictures cannot be taken while recording.
It is 3/11/24 and I added 👍. I have been using an AX33 since 2015 and watching reviews of this model for potential upgrade. Recently the price has dropped significantly across the board (eg. B&H $1,399) and I suspect Sony has discontinued manufacture of the AX700. No word about a successor. But to me going from the 33 to the 700 is an upgrade, despite the loss of BOSS. I don't know whether it is worth taking advantage of the lower price or waiting deeper into 2024 to see if Sony will introduce a successor. I have dabbled with the thought of going to the a6700 with a pz lens. Any thoughts...?
Yeah, the AX700 for that price at B&H is "Grey Market" as well. I have a strong suspicion that the AX700 is discontinued. It seems like no companies are really focusing on camcorders. With every company seemingly releasing a handful of new mirrorless cameras every year, it's sad to see that most of the handful of camcorder that are still available are at least a few years old at this point.
Great video. Thank you very much! I have one question. I connected a sennheiser mke 400 with the 3.5mm jack. The video camera can detect it but I can only hear white noise. Any reason why? Thank you again.
I think there is an option to select internal or external mic. If the external mic is chosen, what is the recording level set at? If you display the audio levels on the screen, do they move when you make noise into the mic? Also, make sure you are using the TRS cable, not the TRRS cable with the mic.
I followed your tutorial, and I set it up as an external microphone. Also in auto, the camera detects the microphone. The cable is TRS. Both the microphone and cable work fine on my GH5. There is just a little movement of the audio level but I can hear just white noise with my headphones. Thank you very much. @@bigtb1717
If the audio levels on the camera move, you must be getting something. What do you have the recording level set at? Maybe you need to turn the levels in the camera up?
@@bigtb1717 for some unknown reason the Sennheiser mke 400 cable (which works on a GH5) doesn't work on the Sony AX700. I had to plug the mic with a rode one. Thanks again for your help.
I have a AX53 from more than 1 year and I'm really happy for that. I use frontal ring for exposure control but i'm really dissappoint that when im recording 4K there is no hdmi out, so I can not use an extrwernal monitor to control all. Can you confirm me that on AX700 hdmi out works also during 4k saving? I'm thinking to buy a second hand AX700 to add to my AX53.
Hi there again. Is there any chance to have the file number assigned in sequence? Every time I change/format the card, the file number starts from C0001.mp4 Thank you very much for your time.
I don't think so. The file numbering system was one of the annoying things about Sony cameras back when this camera was released. These days, it seems most can have custom naming assigned, but there were times when I'd be recording stuff with the AX700 and another Sony and had put a fresh card in both so I'd end up with two clips named C0001, two named C0002 etc. Then when I'd try to put them all in a single project folder it would be like "Do you want to overwrite or skip these files?" Sort of frustrating, but I got used to it.
Can you recommend a good software for video editing for this camera? At the moment I still have the old play memories which doesn’t seem to be able to handle 1080p never mind 4K. Any footage I record in 1080p seems to automatically convert to mp4 when I upload it to play memories. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I currently use Davinci Resolve. Before that, I used Power Director. Before that I used Vegas. All have their pros and cons, but it has been so long since I've used Vegas and a number of years since I've used Power Director, so it's tough for me to recommend for or against them these days, because I'm sure stuff has changed. At the time when I switched to Davinci Resolve from Power Director, I would say PD was easier to use. Certain things were just more intuitive. But I switched to Davinci because I wanted the color grading options for some formats that PD didn't support. Since then, Davinci has gone through several version upgrades and almost all of what made PD more intuitive to use is now just as easy on Davinci. There were also little audio clicks between cuts in PD that are not present in Davinci. But again, it has been a long time since I used PD, so it surely has gone through some revisions since then as well. Back when I used Vegas (back when it was still Sony Vegas), I really liked it. I don't remember exactly why I switched, but that was MANY years ago, so I have no idea what Vegas is like these days.
@@bigtb1717I have been a PowerDirector user since PD 14. While DaVinci Resolve is free I understand that the learning curve is greater. I buy their subscription plan because of PhotoDirector, ColorDirector and AudioDirector are bundled in. This year PowerDirector changed the GUI which meant re-finding where they stashed some of the controls, but it is still easy to use. If he is new to editing then PD is more user friendly.
If you want to watch it on the camera, press the "Thumbnail" button with the little play button next to it. That will open the playback menu with thumbnails of all the videos and pictures on the memory card. You can scroll through and play them on the camera.
Well, I never really record outdoor sports, so I'm probably not the best to ask. Nothing wrong with just using full auto, if you don't feel like messing around in an attempt to get a specific look. Otherwise, how you adjust from there will depend on the look you want, if it's sunny or cloudy, etc. The best thing to do might just be to record some test footage in different conditions to see what works best for you.
Hi there, when i try to set up video settings for 4k 60fps, so far ive only been able to find 4k 60mbps or 100mbps. Is this the way i choose 30 fps vs 60 fps. I was thinking i would find a setting option for fps somewhere. If it matters, I saved to the SD crd and plug it into my mac to download the vid and i do not use the HDMI. Im more an auto set everything basic user filming basketball inside only moving from an iphone15 pro to an actual camcorder for better video quality and want to make sure im always 4k 60fps. Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately, this camera cannot do 60 FPS in 4K, only 24, 25, or 30 FPS. It's still capable of excellent quality, but the actual framerate is limited to 30FPS in 4K. The higher framerate really only helps with a certain, perceived motion smoothness (when viewed at 60FPS on a display that is running at least 60Hz). It can also help the video look smoother when slowed down. 60 vs. 100 Mbps refers to the data rate of the video. 100 Mbps will be higher quality and the files will be larger.
Thank you for a very informative video. Is there a way to show a horizon line on the display or viewfinder to tell if the camera is tilted or not? Lots of 35mm still cameras have a horizon line display to show if the camera is at an angle. This would be useful when the camera is recording while mounted to a tripod.
Unfortunately, this camera does't have an electronic level. You can display a grid, to help you align with stuff in the frame, but there is no level reference display.
@@bigtb1717A grid is adequate, any camera / mobile phone camera display I own always has the grid permanently on. Even my old school Canon A1 SLR has the grid prism option fitted.
Thanks for this video. I shoot on all of Sony's latest mirrorless cameras in full manual, so having to operate this camera for a part time job has felt a little goofy. At this job, they want the camera's SCENE SELECTION SET to NIGHT SCENE. I'm wondering what is going on under the hood and if it is at all related to NIGHT SHOT. My best observation so far is that NIGHT SCENE drops the shutter speed/angle as low as the frame rate will allow, but the colors still look weird too. Not sure if that's just because of the auto WB... Any input? Thanks again.
As you say, I believe night scene drops the shutter speed and allows the gain (ISO) to go a bit higher (allows it to max out at 33 instead of 27, or somewhere around there). I can't say for sure what else it does, but if there is color weirdness, I would guess it is upping the saturation a bit to counter the slightly more subdued colors you get in low light in general and especially at higher gains. I can't say that for sure though. It's also possible it's just the auto white balance struggling a bit in low light, as you say. Night shot is something totally separate. Night shot will remove the IR filter and switch to a green night vision look. It would be unmistakable if that was turned on.
@@bigtb1717 Oh good call on the saturation! Yeah I geneally can see shifting WB when in auto, and it doesn't look *that* bad, but when shooting in night scene, the skin tones have a completely different (bad) look to them. Thanks so much!
so i just bought this same camera, but everything shoots in PAL format and I see yours shoots in NTSC. I have been through all the menus and I cannot find anywhere to change that. I want to shoot in 24fps but it only gives option for 25fps. Is there a menu item I am missing?
Never mind. I figured it out. If anyone has the same problem, here is the solution: 1. Click Menu 2. Go to others 3. Go to 60i/50i Sel 4. Next menu-click yes. it will reboot and you will be in NTSC format. Hope this helps someone else.
I have a Sony AX43 that connects to an External hard-drive through the sony USB cable VMC-UAM2. To save and play back recorded videos. Can this camera do the same? I'm not seeing it. I would say NOT...
Sort of. In the "S&Q" mode (which stands for Slow and Quick), you can choose high framerates for slow motion and low framerates for a sped up look. It will almost be like a time lapse, but it's closer to the "hyperlapse" feature that some action cameras have. The framerate can be set as low as 1 frame per second. So it would be a fairly quick time lapse, but there's no way to take a single frame every 30 seconds or once a minute or even five minutes or something like that for a longer time lapse.
Question for you. So I have had my ax 700 for about a year now. The other day I decided to use slot A and b for the SD cards and I noticed that slot b only recorded 10 minute segments. Is there a way to fix that so that it records continuously
What recording mode were you using for the two slots? Simultaneous, Relay, or Proxy? I've never noticed that behavior when using XAVC-S. I believe AVCHD will always do that, regardless of the card slot. Was one card formatted differently than the other? A fat32 files system can only support up to 4Gb files, so the camera will automatically start a new file when it reaches 4Gb. Could one card have been formatted fat32?
I believe exFAT would be the format you would want to use. What size are the cards? I believe if you format them in the camera they should default to exFAT, at least for SDXC cards. If they are SDHC cards they may be limited to fat32, though if they are both the same make/model card, then they should both support files larger than 4GB.
Yes. It's in the display set>marker menu. There's a setting at the top of the marker menu to turn all markers on or off. This will have to be set to on, then you pick which of the individual markers you want on or off, including an option for "grid frame."
How to view the subject when there is lot of background lighting in outdoor. In Panasonic they had a button called back fill or something which could make the subject bright even there was too much background light. Now the subject looks dark. I am an rookie, please could you guide me what setting has to be made. Also, how to get the output in 16:9 format
This camera has two standard size SD card slots. If you used an adapter, you might be able to use a micro SD card, but it wouldn't be recommended. As for using a 1TB card in general, I can't say if that size card will work or not. I've used 256GB cards with no issues, but never tried using anything larger.
In the menu, under Audio I cannot get the Audio record level off of auto.. I'd like to set that manually since I am plugging in a LAV. Any guesses on how I can do that?
Not sure why it won't let you change it. I tried with the camera in auto and in manual. In both cases when I go to record level and click on where it says auto it gives me the option to cycle between auto and manual. Is your option for manual grayed out?
The sensors aren't the same. The AX700 has a 14 megapixel sensor, the ZV-1 is 20 megapixel. The ZV-1 is also three years newer, has more autofocus points and surely has different processing and software. It's also a different lens. I haven't used the ZV-1, so I can't say how comparable the autofocus is. But I wouldn't be surprised if the ZV-1 had autofocus improvements vs. the AX700. Can't say for sure or how much different it is though.
That would be a matter of shutter speed. That is fully adjustable. Combined with the built-in ND filters this camera should definitely allow you to fine tune the shutter speed to get the props to look the way they do to your eyes.
No problem. I think the main thing will be to maintain a relatively low shutter speed (twice the frame rate, so a frame rate of 30 fps would use a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second). This allows for a natural looking motion blur. Many cameras (especially when pointing at a bright sky) will crank the shutter speed really high to maintain proper exposure. This can result in the props look like they aren't spinning, or are spinning slowly. This camera has built-in ND filters, which allow you to darken the exposure, allowing the use of a motion-blur friendly shutter speed.
Sony has an app. It used to be called Play Memories, but I think the name might have changed. Not 100% sure, I haven't used it. When connected with the app I think there will be an option in the camera to transfer pictures/video to the connected phone. I don't know for sure if the AX700 supports transferring files to the phone via an app or if it only supports control via the app.
I suppose "best" is a bit difficult to say. There are so many different options. I do have a video comparing a handful of "night vision" cameras. ruclips.net/video/gBLUG1f94m8/видео.html A lot of it will come down to what exactly you want to do with it, what features you need and what your budget is.
It does have night shot. It's an option in the menu. There isn't a specific button for it, though I believe you can set one of the customizable buttons for it.
This camera doesn't have an integrated USB webcam feature. However, it has clean output via HDMI. With an HDMI to USB capture card you can connect it to a computer and use it as a webcam that way.
@@bigtb1717 hey if I extend the viewfinder with the lcd closed. It powers up the unit but the viewfinder is dark. It’s used. Power up also when I open the lcd screen.
@icecorebaby Mine automatically turns on the viewfinder when I pull it out. Obviously it detects that the viewfinder is extended, because it turns on. Sounds like something isn't working properly.
I'm not aware of any way to have it automatically re-set, but you can make it only run when you are recording and you can manually re-set it back to zero any time in the timecode menu.
Are you connecting the camera to the computer directly, via USB? I think when you do that you have to select the right mode when you plug it in, but I'm honestly not sure. I've never done it that way. I always just remove the memory card and use a USB memory card reader with my computer. Sony's folder structure is a bit strange, but the files are in a folder called "clips" which is in another folder called "private" I think. If you are connecting directly via USB and can't get it to work, I can give it a shot tomorrow and let you know what I find.
I've got an issue with displaying 3x3 grid on LCD display. I go to menu -> display set -> marker -> guideframe -> on. But this doesn't work, still my LCD display is not showing the grid. Anyone has the same problem and know how to fix it?
Sorry I missed this question. At the top of that menu there is the option to turn markers on. That setting affects all the other markers. It's basically a way to choose whether any of the markers display or not. So even if you had all the option turned on, if markers are off, none of them will show up.
Please can someone tell me how I might switch mine on remotely? I have mine set up too far for me to reach it and need a remote way to switch it on and off. Is this possible with this camera? Also I'm not sure how I use the wireless remote when I cannot see the view finder and menu 😕
If you won't be able to see the screen/viewfinder, then you'll have to try to get all your settings configured before-hand. Then just use the remote to power up the camera and/or start recording. There are several wired and wireless remotes available that can power on the camera remotely. The Revo VRS can do it. They make wireless and wired versions. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1405659-REG/revo_vrs_multi_w_wireless_video_remote_for.html
@@bigtb1717 ok great, I found one that might do the trick! Would I keep able to keep the viewfinder closed all the time or would it need to be open all the time? Thanks for your help!
I'm not sure if there are larger batteries available, but I just have the standard battery. The battery is probably four or more years old at this point. I don't remember if it was significantly better when new, but I'd say probably around two hours. I don't normally record long, continuous videos with it though, so it's tough for me to say for sure. I do often have it out in the garage with me all day, using it off and on throughout the day and battery life is never an issue at all. But again, even if I end up with a couple dozen clips at the end of the day, they probably average a couple minutes each.
Sorry, I know this isn't more clear in the video, but I'll give a very quick overview here. Optical zoom: This zoom is accomplished entirely in the lens. There is theoretically no loss of image quality or resolution with optical zoom. This will depend on lens quality, but the lens in this camera is very good. This is the best type of zoom. Clear Image zoom: This is accomplished by cropping in on the sensor, while technically not dropping resolution. The sensor has more pixels than are strictly required for the resolution the camera is recording at. Clear image zoom crops into the sensor, but only as far as it can without losing resolution. So once you are at the maximum "clear image" zoom, you are only using the actual number of sensor pixels that are required for the resolution you are recording at. There may be a slight loss in image quality because the camera can no longer "oversample" from a larger number of pixels. But the drop in quality should be relatively small since there isn't technically a drop in resolution. Digital zoom: This is similar to just cropping in on the video in a video editor after the fact. The camera may apply some type of processing to minimize the quality loss, but there will be a drop in resolution and a drop in image quality. Hopefully this helps.
I can't speak for everyone's needs and use case, but I still use mine regularly. However, I will say that recently I noticed that it's not available from the "usual suspect" retailers. Places like B&H and others no longer list it, or only list the gray market version. I suspect it may be discontinued by Sony. My hope is that it will be replaced, but it seems like a lot of the camera brands are moving away from "camcorders." I hope it's not just an abandoned product and is actually slated to be replaced with a new, improved model. So be careful if you go looking for one. I find that it's very common when a product is initially discontinued that places that still have stock tend to jack up the price because there are suddenly no other listings to compare to and realize they are over-charging. I certainly don't think it's worth overpaying for in 2024, lol. Even at the "regular" price, it would really depend on your use case on whether or not it was worth it to you. I have gotten a TON of use out of mine and see no reason why I would stop using it. But there are cheaper options out there, depending on your needs.
Best camera feature guide I've watched. Ever. For real, you nailed it.
Brilliant, this is just simple and straight to the point with no waffle. Thank you.
Beautiful tutorial! so much info packed in a video less than an hour. Very useful!
Excellent tutorial, very detailed. Sony should pay you for this!!!! Thanks
Awesome video, explains the features of the camera very well and in a brief bit of time. Easy to understand, better than most.
Thank you for taking the time to explain the menu. I have 2 of these cameras and am still learning after 2 years
I've been working with my AX700 for two years now and this video pointed out features of which I did not know. Thanks!!!
I haven't used this camera for a couple of years and came here to familiarise myself with some of the manual settings (which I prefer). I now know things I didn't know about this camera. I'm pretty pumped.
Thank you so much for a sensational tutorial.
Would you be interested in selling your ax700?
One thing I did last year (third year of ownership) was to put tiny circular dots of hook and loop material on certain buttons to tell them apart from the rest by feel:
Power - because of the number of times I accidentally hit that one and kill the camera.
#2 Status Check is assigned to Menu - so I am not stretching a finger out past the display to the actual Menu button.
AF/MF on the side of the lens, something I frequently change back and forth; and
#6 that I have turning on/off Focus Peaking.
Great video! Learned a lot!
Brilliant - best overview I've found so far.
Wonderful walkthrough, thanks so much!
I found that it's only available with AVCHD recording mode.
clarity and coherence without selling. thanks
Very nice camcorder. Lots of features . Very impressive. Time to get one and download my mini dvd tapes. Nice tutorial
Very good video, thanks. I have just been using mine as it came out of the box but your video has motivated me to get a little more clever with it.
best review for this camera. well explained
Wow, you certainly have a way to cut through reading the manual! Thank you! Yeah, late comer just picked up this camera but am so impressed with all the features. Dry and boring, well damn dude, no way sugar coat the operations manual, LOL.
Excellent!!! Very detailed. Thank you!!!
I have this camera and I barely use it but thanks to this tutorial, I have an idea what I am dealing with.
:-) Thanks!
GREAT tutorial! Way better than the one I paid for.
Thank you for this! I've had this camera for. while but wanted to use it more fully - this has really helped.
Glad it was helpful.
Just to get a sense of how good this tutorial is, take a look at the camera's manual. It's pititul by comparison.
great overview and shots!
This was super helpful, thank you!
@@bigtb1717 For sure! I called Sony yesterday to ask them and they thought I was asking about the output frame rates haha.
Yup, just confirmed it still has the HDMI out active in the 960 FPS mode.
Truly excellent video. Thank you very much
Nice Video Man! I am thinking of buying this camera over the NX80. Is this like the NX80 just without the big Microphone inputs?
I thought the NX80 was discontinued, but maybe some sellers still have them.
The NX80 has the handle with XLR audio input jacks. It also supports 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi streaming with RTMP/RTMPS protocols. I believe that's live news-broadcaster type stuff. Not sure if it has any application for live, web streaming.
I doubt I can ever afford an AX700 but I learned A lot about it here. Thanks
If you can afford a latest iPhone..then it's better to invest that money into this camera..
Thanks for the awesome review.I just got this camcorder and was wondering if there is a way to set the recording time to just record in 10 minute clips or of my set desired time of clips ? If so how do I make that happen ?

This was very informative. I want to use this camera to convert super 8 movies to digital. What are the best settings/setup for this? Thanks.
Hi great tutorial!!
Do you have any tips about remote use?
I’m experiencing what feels like a glitch -
In camera mode, your exposure settings buttons work fine.
Sorry, I haven't had that issue, but I don't use photo mode, so I may just have never run into that.
Having just recently purchased this camera i found your tutorial most helpful thanks.Do you have any tips or settings i should be using for filming trains up to about 75mph as i find the auto focus struggling at times to keep up.Filming in 4k & in auto. Thanks
try manual setting and set focus to infinity.... then you wont miss the action going by and will keep it in focus.
Just received my Sony FDR-AX700 and this video has made me so much more comfortable using this camera! I have no clue, but how do you playback videos you've recorded directly on the camera??
Under the display there is an oval-shaped button that says "Thumbnail." Pressing that will switch to playback mode.
@@bigtb1717 do you think this would be a good camcorder for Disneyland?
@@user-if4jg6ul9o Sure. It's a bit large to carry around all day, depending on what all you plan to do there and what all you are carrying with you, but it's a great camera. You could also consider the Sony AX53. Not as much manual control and a bit worse dynamic range. But it's smaller, lighter and has better image stabilization.
Great video! Question: what type of SD card is recommended?
Have fun!
Yes! Thank you very very much!!

Is there a limitation to 1080p 120fps? This is the number 1 selling point so far for me compared to the AX53, other than the AX53 having a built-in gimbal.
Hello,
Do you know if this camcorder is comparable with external flash? I have a quantum Qflash Model T5D-R I’m hoping to use!
No. This is primarily a video camera, so there are no photography features or external flash support.

Hi there again.
Is there any chance to have the file number assigned in sequence?
Every time I change/format the card, the file number starts from C0001.mp4
Thank you very much for your time.
It's a shame. Thank you very much again for your time. 🙏@@bigtb1717
Excellent presentation. I have one question. I recorded a test video. How do I watch my recorded video? Thanks.
If you want to watch it on the camera, press the "Thumbnail" button with the little play button next to it. That will open the playback menu with thumbnails of all the videos and pictures on the memory card. You can scroll through and play them on the camera.
Curious what settings you use for filming outdoor sports?
Well, I never really record outdoor sports, so I'm probably not the best to ask. Nothing wrong with just using full auto, if you don't feel like messing around in an attempt to get a specific look. Otherwise, how you adjust from there will depend on the look you want, if it's sunny or cloudy, etc.
The best thing to do might just be to record some test footage in different conditions to see what works best for you.
Thank you for the tutorial
Is there a fade in / fade out on this camera when you press the record button when filming?
Not that I am aware of.
@@bigtb1717 can u please tell me whether you know where the 30 fps setting is? Thanks so much

Very informative, thanks!
so i just bought this same camera, but everything shoots in PAL format and I see yours shoots in NTSC. I have been through all the menus and I cannot find anywhere to change that. I want to shoot in 24fps but it only gives option for 25fps. Is there a menu item I am missing?
Never mind. I figured it out. If anyone has the same problem, here is the solution:
1. Click Menu
2. Go to others
3. Go to 60i/50i Sel
4. Next menu-click yes.
it will reboot and you will be in NTSC format. Hope this helps someone else.
Thank you. You did well.👍
So useful, thank you!
I have a Sony AX43 that connects to an External hard-drive through the sony USB cable VMC-UAM2. To save and play back recorded videos.
Can this camera do the same? I'm not seeing it.
I would say NOT...
I might have missed it. Does this thing have a time lapse mode?
I'm not sure about the SD card in slot B if it's formatted fat32. Do you recommend formatting it to NTS
I'm filming in XAVC mode
Is it possible that I need to change slot B settings?
When I get home in 30 minutes I'll check the slot b settings
I believe exFAT would be the format you would want to use. What size are the cards? I believe if you format them in the camera they should default to exFAT, at least for SDXC cards. If they are SDHC cards they may be limited to fat32, though if they are both the same make/model card, then they should both support files larger than 4GB.
Does the Camera have an option for gridlines?
Spot Metering should help with a backlit subject.
Both 4K and 1080P are 16:9.
Can a 1T micro SD card with adaptor be used with this camera?
This camera has two standard size SD card slots. If you used an adapter, you might be able to use a micro SD card, but it wouldn't be recommended.
As for using a 1TB card in general, I can't say if that size card will work or not. I've used 256GB cards with no issues, but never tried using anything larger.
How would I record upside down or would I have to flip in the software I use
If you record with the camera upside down and want it to be upright after the fact, you would have to rotate the video in software.
Assuming this has the sensor as the ZV1, is the autofocus comparable or the same?
The sensors aren't the same. The AX700 has a 14 megapixel sensor, the ZV-1 is 20 megapixel. The ZV-1 is also three years newer, has more autofocus points and surely has different processing and software. It's also a different lens.
I haven't used the ZV-1, so I can't say how comparable the autofocus is. But I wouldn't be surprised if the ZV-1 had autofocus improvements vs. the AX700. Can't say for sure or how much different it is though.
Is it capable of filming aircraft propellers going around realistically e.g. at airshows ?
That would be a matter of shutter speed. That is fully adjustable. Combined with the built-in ND filters this camera should definitely allow you to fine tune the shutter speed to get the props to look the way they do to your eyes.
@@bigtb1717Thanks so much for the quick reply. I did hear you mention shutter speeds could be changed, so I had a hunch it may be possible.
How do you transfer videos from the camera to a phone using the wifi function? I cannot figure that out. Thank you.
What's the best night vision camcorder for videos?
I suppose "best" is a bit difficult to say. There are so many different options. I do have a video comparing a handful of "night vision" cameras.
ruclips.net/video/gBLUG1f94m8/видео.html
A lot of it will come down to what exactly you want to do with it, what features you need and what your budget is.
jai une camera ax700 mais elle a just 2 langues japonais ét chinois est ce que je peut installer francais
does it not have night shot?
don't see the button for it (as the ax53 has)
It does have night shot. It's an option in the menu. There isn't a specific button for it, though I believe you can set one of the customizable buttons for it.
@@bigtb1717 cool.
Super video ! Merci bien ;))
Is it possible to record video and take photos to this camera without sd card?
This camera has no built-in memory, so an SD card is required in order to record video or take pictures.
Which port do i use to use it as an external webcam?
This camera doesn't have an integrated USB webcam feature. However, it has clean output via HDMI. With an HDMI to USB capture card you can connect it to a computer and use it as a webcam that way.
@@bigtb1717 thank you
camcorders are the best. cameras are made for taking photos 1st and last video
Except the fact you're dealing with one fixed lens
Just got my ax700, my viewfinder isn’t working. Any suggestions?
It doesn't turn on when you extend it? Does it turn the camera on when you extend it? Is the camera new or used?
@@bigtb1717 hey if I extend the viewfinder with the lcd closed. It powers up the unit but the viewfinder is dark. It’s used. Power up also when I open the lcd screen.
@icecorebaby Mine automatically turns on the viewfinder when I pull it out. Obviously it detects that the viewfinder is extended, because it turns on. Sounds like something isn't working properly.

Hi, A much-desired video. How to enable grid lines on this camera
You have to go into the display menu and go to markers. Turn markers on and then pick the markers you want to show. A grid is one of the options.
How do I change Frame rates.
Thank you!
i can have the tc time set to 0 and go only when i rec, then return to 0?
I'm not aware of any way to have it automatically re-set, but you can make it only run when you are recording and you can manually re-set it back to zero any time in the timecode menu.
I can’t import video and auto to my desktop computer, it doesn’t slow me to see it. What can I do?
Are you connecting the camera to the computer directly, via USB? I think when you do that you have to select the right mode when you plug it in, but I'm honestly not sure. I've never done it that way. I always just remove the memory card and use a USB memory card reader with my computer. Sony's folder structure is a bit strange, but the files are in a folder called "clips" which is in another folder called "private" I think.
If you are connecting directly via USB and can't get it to work, I can give it a shot tomorrow and let you know what I find.
I've noticed it won't do face detection in 4K, anyone know why this is?
How many hours does a battery shoot video?
I'm not sure if there are larger batteries available, but I just have the standard battery. The battery is probably four or more years old at this point. I don't remember if it was significantly better when new, but I'd say probably around two hours. I don't normally record long, continuous videos with it though, so it's tough for me to say for sure. I do often have it out in the garage with me all day, using it off and on throughout the day and battery life is never an issue at all. But again, even if I end up with a couple dozen clips at the end of the day, they probably average a couple minutes each.
@@bigtb1717 thank you 🙏
Can this camera rec a time stamp
Hi Tony! How are you! It’s Timmy!
Only thing I would of asked to go more into detail on more would be optical zoom vs clear image zoom vs digital zoom
Is this camera worth it in 2024?
