Rakim less talented than RunDMC? I've never heard that before. Rakim is credited with being one of the first to rap without raising his voice.

Rakim the GOD is still one of the GOATS. RDMC was progressive and broke down walls between cultures but Rakim has always been a superior lyricist.
I believe you are not looking at rhyme scheme also.
Rakim is the next evolution after run dmc. He changed hip hop with his smooth flow. He used his voice as a jazz instrument. You have to listen to more of him to see that. This version is a remix.

Rakim was the genesis of the rhyme schemes and rapping style that gave birth to the people we consoder legends today (Jay Z, Nas, Notorious BIG etc.)
Rakim is known in the Hip-Hop culture as one of the best emcees of all time! It's funny you say Rakim is less evolved than Run DMC. Rakim was probably THE most revolutionary MC in hip hop history. He completely advanced the genre, before him you probably wouldn't even speak of an artists "flow". In fact I've seen interviews where DMC from Run DMC says they were worried for there careers when Rakim burst on the scene😅

he called the GOD Rakim a regular MC lol ask Nas if Rakim regular. The video was a remix of the song which is short and only one verse. This remix and video was an attempt to catch the up and coming early 90s club scene eyeballs in the US and abroad. A record labels attempt at "the crossover"(EPMD mad a song called the crossover a few years later after they had better knowledge and ways of the music industry). Hip hop was still somewhat underground. late night radio segment, or kiss fm in New York. The rappers wanted to stay "street" and make music for the "real" hip hop heads. The industry wanted to tap into other listeners. No disrespect to eric b and rakim. stuff like this was sometimes, if not more times, if not all the time, out of they control back then. Rakim Allah is a true pioneer true icon and arguably considered THE G.O.A.T.

The production of this song is what caught my attention when it came out. Yes, I was a YEWT when this came out. It was so different from the styles of rap at that time. His flow was different than Run DMC and other rappers of the time. STILL my one of my favorites and in my opinion STILL unmatched. The 7 minute cold cut mix is the real Paid in Full experience.

Lmao. Rakim is one of the greatest mc's of all time. He changed how everyone rhymed after him. He was one of the first, if not the first, to use inside rhyme schemes as well as rhyming the last word. He is a much better rapper skill wise than run dmc. It is not even close. This guy has a claim to goat status, because he single handedly moved the music forward and the industry was not the same after him.
My question is: why is the conversation usually about who is “better”? Why can’t it be enough to say that one artist moves us more than another one? “Greatest” “much better” “not even close” “GOAT”…
@@MusicShed I love Run DMC. That being said, what Rakim was doing in the 80s. No one else was. His nickname back then was God MC. Run DMC is maybe the greatest Rap Duo of all time. But not for skill. There is a delineation. To your statement, you can say someone is a better rapper and still like both.

Well to judge Rakim´s skills after hearing just one song is a bit premature to say the least.
Here the beat was simple and slow paced so his rapping rhythm was simple and slow paced as well..
Listen to "Follow the leader" or "Let the rhythm hit em" and then judge again.
I scrolled down expecting -- correctly, I might add -- that I'll find some backlash for the comments regarding Rakim and his rapping ability. I'm not going to pile on but rather attempt to provide some background.
To start with, what you said, even though you might not have meant it as such, is nigh blasphemous for many people - Rakim (pronounced Ra-kim, rather than Rakeem, for future reference) is largely credited as one of the most technically skilled and (maybe even moreso) influential rappers in terms of pushing the boundaries and standards of the quality of rappers' writing, particularly with regard to complexity and diversity of rhymes. He is, more than any other, your favorite rapper's favorite rapper - widely deemed one of the (if not the) greatest of all time, both for body of work but especially for influence. I wish I were slightly more knowledgeable about jazz history to be able to strike a comparison that aptly exemplifies what I'm talking about here.
With ALL of that said: I don't blame you for what you said. While yes undoubtedly even on their debut record as a duo (which this song is from) Rakim pushed boundaries, you don't (at this point in your hip hop journey) have the context to draw that conclusion yourself. And, to be entirely honest, I personally don't think Paid in Full as an album aged nearly as well as Follow the Leader, the Eric B & Rakim project released just the year after; I disagree with the comparison to Run DMC to say the least, but, overarchingly, the point I want to make is the following:
I think it's important to keep in mind, when exploring the music of the most influential artists in the genre, to adjust your point of reference, because a majority of those who came after - particularly in the case of Rakim - were influenced by him to an incredible extent, and went on to work on and improve upon the ideas and techniques he pioneered. It's the trope of Seinfeld being unfunny; what Rakim did was at the time revolutionary, and when some of it seems basic today, it's *because* he did it at the time and people plucked it. And bear in mind, this isn't to say Rakim couldn't and didn't hold his own with those he influenced; Rakim's later music holds up.

Here's a Norwegian born singer with phenomenal vocals. Angelina Jordan, 16 today, first came on the scene as a barefooted little girl of 7 with Amy Winehouse hair, who walked onto the stage of Norway's Got Talent to audition. She was last up, and nobody was prepared for this 'old soul', who went on to win the season singing jazz classics from decades past. The vocal control she exhibited was even more exceptional, as she taught/teaches herself to sing, beginning around 2-3 years old. Even on the stage of NGT, the judges saw her arrange her music and lyrics even at such a young age. Having won NGT 2014, Angelina went on to compete in America's Got Talent, The Champions 2020, auditioning with her own arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody. She's performed over 190 covers and has 5 original songs, all uniquely arranged and performed. She has received over 1 billion views on RUclips and 2.5 billion on Facebook. All that being said, before you deep dive into this young performers covers or originals, there's one gem amongst a treasure trove to start with.
This "MUST SEE" performance is her cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" (1956). I guarantee that you will not regret making this your next reaction. She will literally cause you to question reality. At 9 years and 2 months old, Angelina arranged and performed a black and white studio cover of this jazz classic; considered by many to be a masterpiece cover of how Jay intended the song to be performed. There are 195 versions of the song performed by such greats as: Nina Simone; Manfred Man; Pete Townshend; John Fogerty; Annie Lennox; and many more. So the question is, how does Angelina Jordan come closer to the original than the other 194 great artists?
She did it by going back to the source, Screamin' Jay Hawkins himself. Her arrangement of music and lyrics honor Jay's work as close as possible, albeit by being performed by a tiny barefooted 9 year old girl. She can change up her performance on the fly. The notes she scribbles down at the beginning of the video are the lyrics you can see her referring to during the performance. Singing is simply organic to her. The candle she holds in the beginning has a picture of Jay on it, honoring (or perhaps channeling) him. If you haven't seen one of Jay's performances, I've provided a link to him on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1989. I recommend listening to Jay's performance 'AFTER' your react to Angelina, even if you do it on your own time. Jay's is raw and very unconventional. After watching Jay, I jumped right back to Angelina's cover, picking out how she adapted Jay's style for her own arrangement. This song has over 9.9 million views on her channel, and millions more on reactor views.
I stress that you watch this black and white studio performance (listed below) from her cover channel. She has performed the song since this time, but she has never replicated the vocal performance she gave here. This is a treat for any vocal coaches to try to deconstruct how this 9 year old pulls it off. This is a one-and-only treasure that you absolutely won't regret watching. If you disagree after hearing her, dinners on me when you're in the neighborhood.

This version, on the 12" B-side of the Paid In Full single, is seven minutes long and it is a UK remix. Subtitled "7 Minutes of Madness". This was done using 3 Technics 1200 turntables and cut and paste tape looping. It really was very hard back in those days!! Saying Rakim has less of a flow than Run Dmc is a joke. Do your homework.

Glad you are reacting to this, but you have TOTALLY missed the mark on analyzing Rakim’s flow. He was way ahead of his time, and light years beyond run DMC. This track only showed a snippet of rakim rapping. But if you hear him on a track that displayed his rapping on display, you will see that he red like a free form jazz artist, and he developed intricate rhyme schemes that is credited for evolving the art form.

You can't judge Rakim by one song, your looking at a rap legend who change the game of hip hop until this day, his lyrical rhyme schemes were way ahead of his time, and far more complex than RUN DMC.

I'll try to give you some context to the reaction in the comments. To put it in perspective for you, it may be like someone less familiar with the evolution of Jazz saying that Benny Goodman and or Luis Armstrong was more talented or skilled than Bird, Dizzy Gillespie , or Miles Davis... perhaps?
