It's storytime again, folks. And this one's a bona fide classic. So pour something nice, hunker down, and learn all about a poor mum's trouble with Harry... CONTENT WARNING:📢Raised voices 😱 Upsetting themes. JASPER NOTE: 🙄 I unwittingly used an abridged version of this story that I found in an old school text book (cut for length, I would say, rather than content). The abridgement is limited to a couple of paragraphs (a couple of minutes in audio terms) It shouldn't affect your understanding of the story or your enjoyment of it, but it is frustrating nonetheless. At some point I might do a redux version. In the meantime, if you want to hear what you've missed you could do a lot worse than checking out Tony @ClassicGhost Walker's excellent version here: ruclips.net/video/tOizP1ByqGg/видео.html
Timperley is another cherish writer. So many of her stories crop up in The Pan Books of Horror Stories. Can't remember reading this one in there though. Great stuff as always Jasper 😊😊 😊
Jeez, mate, you narrate like no other. I’m a miserable twat so don’t easily dish out praise, but I LOVE listening to anything you narrate. Take a Break- even- 😎
I find ghost stories set during the daylight hours somehow more chilling than at night. There's something 'wrong' when it's set on a happy, warm summer day... it's because one doesn't expect horrors then, only at night, so it's weirdly eerie. Anyway, that was a cracking one. You never fail. I remembered it from when I was a child. My mum must have read it to me, she read me so many. Cheers Jasper 😊💀
As sister with a red, curly haired brother, I have always pictured Harry since first I read this story. It's a real treat to have it brought to life so very vibrantly. I could smell the attar of Summer white roses in the air. Thank you Jasper, you are a master of the audio stage. 🥀
I knew it, when I saw the title and the picture of the child. I knew this would be a very sad tale. You've outdone yourself again, Monsieur L'Estrange.
A wonderful, foreboding, narration. The old woman’s voice was perfect- you gave it life, truth, anger, fatefulness, and the scary but believable tone of someone teetering at the precipice of insanity. Perfectly done!
That's where I first read it too! And, any audiophiles reading this, the actor Kevin Eldon does a brilliant narration of this on the all-round marvellous version of the Dahl anthology available on Audible.
It's one of the classics. They don't write 'em like this anymore. This is so fantastically written. The style of these older writings far surpasses that of many works we see today. This is quite a sad and scary story. It is well-suited for this channel. Fantastic narration (all of yours are). Your narration of this story, like all you do for us, is crisp, clear, and chilling. Bravo!!
RT wrote a lot for magazines in the 50s and 60s I think, probably helps develop this economy with language. There's not an ounce of fat on this story, and I love it.
@@EnCryptedHorror yes sir! I totally did not see you called it a classic, too, in your description. Please forgive me for the plagiarism. The modern 976-page epic about an unkillable vampire is not my thing. I will take this story or "Four Wooden Stakes" over these newer scary stories any day. Thanks for narrating this treasure!
There's some good stuff in that "Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories" and no mistake. Delighted to see another one of my favourite stories from that anthology get the Jasper L'Estrange treatment.
Wow. Super great and creepy a.h., I think I remember this one from Tony's chan, but great work, (GREAT great doctor; you do great with women, too, but not exclusively) as always. Thanks Jasper!
Yes, it's hot where I be too, could be much worse in July. I had to make a grocery run & the car seat was so hot when I came out & tried to sit on it, I couldn't! Had to let it cool. It was that hot & I wasn't in there that long!
Such a perfect little story. Using opening sentences to tie up the end of a piece gives it a very satisfying ending. It worked so well ...I had goosebumps! Can I say your acting (always impressive) was bloody AMAZING. P.S We really need some merchandise Jasper! 👌
Excellently creepy... I'd rather hear your rendition than read it... Faked friends intrigue me, am thinking of The Shining... so polite too, "Thank you, Mrs Torrance.." better than a real kid!

Heading over to listen ❤
Blimey, that was a bit of a one! Poor old gingers!! (I speak as one ) 😀♥️
This one is familiar to me, I think Tony did it a couple of years ago, both great versions and always worth another listen.
I believe you’re correct. I know I’ve heard it before; I was also thinking it must have been Tony.

Surely, Take a Break especially 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Alison! I'm known to be a miserable twat myself so you're in good company here 😆

Ahh… finally a respite for my mind from this oppressive heat. You bring a shivering breeze and chills at just the right moments, Dear Jasper!
It's been warm here too. Glad to bring some chills 🥶
Genuinely masterful reading, as always. Really enjoyed that.

I have a red-haired son and daughter, and have always loved this tale of the unearthly bond of these two 😂 Thanks Jasper!
A classic! A favorite that I first read in Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories when I was a teen- a terrifying good time

How lovely of you to direct your listeners to Tony Walker.... you both are massively talented and delightful!
Fantastic rendition of this classic tale. I especially loved your reading of the elderly lady.
Thank you kindly!
