One of my trees is right next to the fence and I always felt bad that the leaves fell into the neighbors yard and they had to rake them up. Last year I asked if I could come over and collect them for my compost pile. This year they texted me to ask if I wanted them again. Yes! She even mowed them up and dumped them into my wheelbarrow. Free compost!

The best frugal tip about getting a job with perks was from another RUclips, Gayle Agostinelli (who makes journals): She worked for 25 years at Carroll College in Montana and ALL FOUR OF HER CHILDREN GOT FREE COLLEGE EDUCATIONS from that institution because she worked there. That is the best frugal tip of all time.

We avoided the whole college education trap .
Our daughter went to votech for cosmetology while she was in high school for free.
Eventually she ended up getting the instructor position at the school and worked up to having a booth at a beauty shop.
When the owner retired my daughter bought the shop and acquired all the previous owner’s customers.
She is doing very well!!! 2:10

    3 yrs late, but I'm here!😊
You may or may not see this, but here goes...
For the tip about going to State Parks to hike (or camp or picnic), many states will have libraries that partner with their state and national parks. You can check the pass out of the library for free admission to state parks and historic sites.
We have never purchased the pass.
We do day trips to different state parks to have a picnic but also to check out the various campsites. Then we go home and we brainstorm and decide where we want to go camping when.
When we're looking at campsites we're looking at things like the gravel, where the electrical hookup might be, ease of getting in and out (we're tent campers), tree coverage, if it's near a playground or a rest area, kayak rentals, etc.
I made walking sticks out of two fallen Oak tree branches. I stripped the bark, sanded it down, and made inlays for shells from places that we had been. I then took some paracord from the Dollar tree and found a RUclips video on how to make a grip.
Hubs was beyond emotion when I gifted them to him. ☺️

My mom would use bread bags and the wax paper from cereal boxes...she bought hamburger in the 10 lb. tube. She had me make hamburger patties and layer them between strips of waxed paper, then put them into the bread bag and put them in the freezer. After all of my experiences with raw meat, I am now plant based. Can you imagine why?!

Tip- I’ve always taken and asked my husband to grab them on business trips -=the plastic shower caps in hotel rooms. I use them over bowls, etc to cover leftovers. Greatest most appreciated gift my girls ever received from grandparents was a summer pass to the local swimming pool. The pass provided free lessons as well as daily pool access. The girls would ride their bikes to the pool and swim/play from 1:00 to 5:00 come home for supper starved and then often go back from 6:30 to 8:00. This was absolutely priceless for them. The parks department also provided free tennis lessons which oldest daughter took for years and then ended up teaching the class.

Dryer tip for warming house... this works but also puts alot of dryer lint dust or something in the air. Everything got covered in a grey powder like dryer lint especially in the same room as the dryer and alot of breathing issues popped up for everyone despite ther being mesh over the end to 'filter'. The best way I've seen the dryer trick done is to vent the dryer just under the house like my parents do for their trailer since the heat rises.

My husband and I are so happy we cut the cable cord and are using a cheap firestick off of Amazon. It has all the favorite apps like youtube and internet and netflix preloaded and now we have sooo much content... not gonna lie so happy we didnt go the antenna route. Also as a side note its really super easy and user friendly. Grow my own food cheap and easy using hydroponics regrowing and even fogponics. No soil... cheap setup, super easy maintenance and clean food at home and indoors. No dig no dirt no pests... no downside ;) Not forgetting sprouts and microgreens. And saving my own seeds make it even cheaper. Yup. Even a brown thumb like me. The hubbs and I also managed to make our own "Berkish" water filter as we have an old 1939 farmhouse with super hard water. We bought a couple of ceramic filters and a spout and drilled through a pair of stainless pots cheapo at walmart. Took us about an hour and we love having fresh clean pure water. its 4 and a half gallons and comparable to the one that costs over 300 dollars. Our setup cost us well under 150 for everything and the filters are 5 years and filter everything. We tested the water before and after for particulates and even ph and it all was fixed. And no we arent mechanically inclined at all. Finally the number one savings in my experience has been learning how to run my home pantry... the right way. From inventory, turn around, best buy dates, proper storing, long term etc. Thanks for doing this series. It has been so timely for many people. Namaste.

When I have something for the mail within my city I never buy a stamp and send it but do a bicycle trip and deliver it myself. Saves only a little money each time but encourages me for regular bike rides plus I know exactly when it arrived (important for stuff like insurances, taxes etc.) Another tipp...you can go and donate blood. Not only do you get a free medical check up and some drinks and snacks but some places even pay a financial compensation and of course you help out the people who rely on blood donors.

    1. For fire starters, put dryer lint inside the empty toilet paper rolls and dip in melted paraffin or candle wax. 2. Save used foil, it can be balled up and used to scrape the bbq grill until it is clean (this also doesn't leave behind dangerous bristles that grill brushes do). 3. An oldie, recycle newspaper to wash windows. Also, don't buy window cleaner, hot, soapy water with a dash of vinegar works well. 4. Use stray socks for dusting, it also makes it "fun" for kids. 5. Put orange peels in a jar and cover with white distilled vinegar, let sit for a week or so. This can be used to clean through grease on garage floors or soak oily tools in to get clean. I have also put it in a spray bottle and sprayed my foundation outside since the neighbors cat doesn't like it, she no longer uses my exterior as her litter box.

We only use one half and stash the unused portion away for later use. I absolutely despise paper waste! Same with paper towels. You can also use common ivy for washing, as the chestnuts. The key ingredient here is saponins (soap-like foaming agents) in the plants. These can also be found in oats, chickpeas, soybeans and soapwort amongst others. Soapwort could be gleaned. Some people also use chickpea flour or oatmeal to wash their faces with and you can also use rye flour for washing your hair.
I water down full-fat milk into skimmed milk, as full fat is only 4 cents more expensive than skimmed per litre. Watered down, it gives me double the mileage as buying skimmed milk and it also saves on packaging.

    Tip:
Shred papers...important stuff and not important stuff too... And the clean shredded paper can be used as packing paper for when sending a package wrapping a gift.
    Also...
Some people buy confetti for parties and some even stuff empty egg shells with it.. Why not make your own confetti? You can take old junk mail and a hole punch and make it while sitting and watching tv......
And speaking of eggs...Easter is coming... Instead of buying egg coloring kits...use food coloring and vinegar and make it yourself...

I save when using fruit juice. I add it to ice tea that I have chilling in the fridge, when I am making a glass. Don't add the juice to the tea when keeping in fridge, keep them in their own containers. Just add when making a drink. This way, you get the 'fancy' flavored tea, and make the juice servings go further. The juice can last a few days.

I freeze honey, if it is in a glass jar I put the jar inside a plastic container to keep it from breaking and freeze it. The honey will not crystalize and honey will keep indefinitely.

    • @KS-zc4jn

Honey will keep indefinitely on your counter too. Although I'm sure you are right about it not crystallizing in the freezer. I just don't have that much freezer room to devote to that.

KS is right that honey will keep on your counter. Honey is the only foodstuff that lasts nearly forever. Archeologists found crystalized honey in one of the Egyptian tombs and discovered it was still safe to eat, even after thousands of years.

Hi, I love your channel!!! I’ve just got done finish watching the first video on the viewers ideas on frugal tips. I learned so much stuff to do to save money. My finger tip is whenever I go grocery shopping, When I get home, I use a permanent marker and write the date, Price and the store where I bought the items from on frequently used items. And whenever the item is finished, I simply look on the bottom of the item, So I can see long it last me for and how much it cost me and which store I bought it from keeping track of every penny I spend.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 года назад

Oh I love having instant access to all that information. I've often put the purchase date on cans, but I've never thought to add the price and where it was bought. That's smart. We do sometimes put the date that we opened items so we can know how long it lasts. Thanks for sharing.

Didn't wear plastic bags on my feet as a kid, but I do as an adult. I live in Northern Minnesota and I have plastic shopping bags on my feet right now! They are the poor man's vapor barrier boot, which keeps the insulation of the boot dry. If your feet get cold, just change your socks. Lots faster than taking your boots off and drying them overnight.

Hi ya, ...in the UK...the leaving something out on the front wall or fence has only arisen due to lockdown restrictions.
Our charity and thrift stores have only been open for about 8 weeks in the past year so - a lot of us have left our donations out for people to pick up.
I suspect this will stop when when this lockdown is over.
    Love you guys xx

I like weak tea. So I fill up a one-quart thermos that I got from a rummage sale with water AND my tea cup. I put all the water into a pot and boil it. I let the water cool down for ten minutes. After that, I put the teabag in the pot for five minutes. I then put the thermos in the sink and pour the tea into it. I also fill the cup. I then get five cups of tea from one tea bag and also I save on energy by boiling it all at once.

I keep a pad of paper clipped to the frig. If I need something at the store, I write it down on the pad immediately so I won't forget to buy it. I take the list to the store once a month and don't go to get just one thing for a recipe. If I can't improvise, I make something else, but I usually plan the menu for a month with what I bought and make sure it all gets eaten up.

I used to always buy those tubes of garlic where you get six or eight heads inside a net and inevitably someone sprout before I got to use them. So now when I buy the long net of garlic I take five of the heads of garlic immediately peel all the clothes put them in my food processor with olive oil and I make my own garlic that is minced with olive oil and I store it in a mason jar in my fridge and now not one little clove of garlic goes to waste. And also a tip with ginger is when I purchased it I either peel it or quite honestly I don't even feel it and move the times but I store it in my freezer in a baggie with the baggy pressed up close around it and whenever I need Ginger I just pull it out and I grate the ginger I need its saws almost immediately and now zero Ginger is wasted either. My last tip is to cut your tuba toothpaste open when you can't squeeze any more out there's actually quite a lot left in there my kids think I'm crazy for doing this though

Love you guys. Loved the tea/coffee saving hint. Always know I could reuse the teabag and I know heaps doo but am always weary of germs so I just made my morning cuppa x 2 and will freeze the second cup. Will test drive it later.
Another hint I use on fridge clean out, any sorry looking veg or scraps from meals that I’ve saved get boiled up for dog food. Some weeks she has very little meat as I will add oats or pasta/rice to thicken the brew which for our Labrador lasts nearly a week. My vet always has commented on the healthy state of my dogs. We also give her a big bone once a week and her teeth at 9 years old are white and lovely. She is never over weight and in very good health. On the alternate week she gets dog sausage. Never dry food as we don;t believe dogs get enough out of it judging by the amount of droppings they do. In the home made food she will only do one parcel a day, on dry food quite often up to 4 parcels a day which surely means they aren’t getting enough I. The food.

I keep water in jugs or bottles in empty freezer space. Have ice bottles for coolers and if we ever lost our water we would have water. I keep two lists. One is very necessary items for groceries and one list for other necessities. I only buy the necessity list then if I have left over money I hit the extra lists. There was snow on the ground this morning and last years geraniums blooming on my windowsill and there are last years seeds in the basement.

I don't use horse chestnuts but I do use soap nuts as replacement for laundry detergent. The soaputs are re-used until they look spent and once spent I can put them into the compost or I save them to boil up and make liquid soap nut that I use for dog shampoo. The whites do appear a bit grey after repeated washes. I solve this problem by giving them a soak in sodium per carbonate every now and then.

My homemade detergent is: take a gallon jug (I use a 1 gallon vinegar bottle), use 3 tablespoons of WASHING soda, and 3 tablespoons of borax and dissolve in warm water. Pour into the vinegar bottle and fill the rest of the way with cool water. Finally, add 3 tablespoons Dawn dishwashing liquid. Use 1 - 2 cups in the wash depending on how big and dirty the load is. I make 3 or 4 gallons at a time. I have been using this for about 7 years and it works great. Pennies per load.
