  • Mario’s beautiful voice with photos from Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 movie of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet with Bolshoi Ballet dancers Alexander Volchkov and Anna Nikulina dancing to Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet.
Photos of Mario are from his film The Great Caruso. His films are available for purchase from Turner Classic Movies.
Mario recorded this song in 1956 on the Lanza On Broadway album.
This Nearly Was Mine was a song from “South Pacific is a musical composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan…. The story is based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific, combining elements of several of the stories.” [The above quote is from: en.wikipedia.or...)]
Film photos are from Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 Romeo and Juliet film. “Romeo and Juliet is a 1968 British-Italian romance film based on the tragic play of the same name (1591-95) by William Shakespeare.
The film was directed and co-written by Franco Zeffirelli, and stars Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography (Pasqualino De Santis) and Best Costume Design (Danilo Donati); it was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture, making it the last Shakespearean film to be nominated for Best Picture to date. Sir Laurence Olivier spoke the film's prologue and epilogue and reportedly dubbed the voice of the Italian actor playing Lord Montague, but was not credited in the film.
Being the most financially successful film adaptation of a Shakespeare play at the time of its release, it was popular among teenagers partly because it was the first film to use actors who were close to the age of the characters from the original play. Several critics also welcomed the film enthusiastically.”
[The above quote is from: en.wikipedia.or...)]
Alexander Volchkov and Anna Nikulina danced in this Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet ballet which was broadcast by the Bolshoi Ballet over the television to North America in 2013. (Information from: www.nytimes.com...)
    “Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (/prɵˈkɒfiɛv/; Russian: Сергей Сергеевич Прокофьев, tr. Sergej Sergeevič Prokof'ev;[n 1] 11/23 April, 1891-March 5, 1953) was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous musical genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His works include such widely heard works as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet - from which "Dance of the Knights" is taken - and Peter and the Wolf. Of the established forms and genres in which he worked, he created - excluding juvenilia - seven completed operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, and nine completed piano sonatas.” [The above quote is from: en.wikipedia.or...}

Who else but Mario Lanza could sing this with such passion? He was the
most versatile tenor of all time. He sang lyric opera magnificently as
he did popular songs; perform on the stage and screen, radio and
television. There has never been anyone like him before or after who
also had an amazing influence on singers and performers everywhere. A
new, bestselling book, “A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE
OF THE POETS,” is a wonderful homage to one of the greatest entertainers
of all time. It is a must for anyone who loves Lanza and great music
    and great voices.

Thank you for giving us Mario lovers a chance to hear him sing again. To Ron Stevens who wrote This is such a beautiful song that's almost ruined by "Lanza's" vocal performance. You sound like 95% of self proclaimed music critics who, not having any talent themselves, try to show their importance by criticizing people who have more talent in the toes than the critics have in their bodies. My long deceased father always liked the saying in the movie "Bambi" "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing [sic] at all. Why don't you let someone film you singing this same song on RUclips so that we can critique you?

In English, you wrote, "Thanks for the beauty!". You are most welcome. I am very pleased that you like it. Franco Zeffirelli's film version of Romeo and Juliet is the best version that I have seen, not just for his expert direction, but also for the excellent selection of outstanding actors and actresses. The film is beautiful to look at, to listen to and it epitomizes the feeling and message that Shakespeare was seeking to impart. This film, one of my very favorites, shows excellence and beauty in every way.

Yes, I totally agree with you. No other operatic tenor approaches the beauty and feeling of Mario's voice. He gives me chills and brings me to tears. As you know, Mario himself has said that he sang from his heart. He always felt and conveyed the true meaning of the aria or popular song lyrics.
It may surprise you that Elvis Presley is a favorite of mine also. He was a big Mario Lanza fan too. I know that Elvis sang a lot of "rock and roll" songs, but his favorite was gospel music. When I hear him sing "Take My Hand Precious Lord", he always brings me to tears. I'm sure that he enjoyed singing other kinds of songs, but it is obvious that his favorite genre was gospel, his mother's favorite choice for him. It is said that Elvis sold more gospel music albums that any other. I believe that it is because Elvis put his true heart into gospel music. You can feel it.
I think that not only their wonderful voices, but their ability to sing from their hearts, have been the reason that they both are so long remembered after their deaths. May they rest in peace. They are greatly missed.
      Kindest Regards,
      Sandra

Io ne sono stata colpita da bambina e da allora provo la stessa sensazione di piacere di allora.La perfezione,il calore e la partecipazione che comunicano non sono cambiati,se mai aumentati.Non ci rinuncerei mai!

      Louis,
Oh, that there were more "crazy' wonderful singers as Mario Lanza. He truly has stood head and shoulders above all other tenors of our age, even 57 years after his death. He really gave all he had when he sang. Too bad that there are so few singers who are able to follow his lead. The only tenor who comes to my mind that reminds me of Mario is Enrico Caruso, but he was of an older, past generation. Mario idolized Caruso and first learned to sing by listening to him. • @MegaMusiclover1234
      @MegaMusiclover1234  8 лет назад +4

      Ron,
I don't believe that his physical health had anything to do with his vocal delivery of this song. What I hear when I listen to Mario singing this song is great deep sadness. Why? I believe, because he is singing a very sad song about lost love. Remember that Mario sang everything from the depth of his heart. (He said so himself). How else would you sing the lyrics of such a sad song as "This Nearly Was Mine"? He's singing about a lost love. You can't get any sadder than that. There is no better way to sing this song but with great sadness in your voice, just as Mario did.
      Kind Regards,
      Sandra

Hi Sandra,Yes, I get that. I'm just sad he didn't sing this in the early 50s or even when he did Cavalcade later in 1956, as that album was superb. There are a lot of "scooped" notes and the ending is strained and almost difficult to listen to. Such a shame, as it's a beautiful song

Frank,Thank you so very much for your comment. It lets me know that such translations are appreciated and valued. I use the Google Translator when necessary. Mario has fans all around the world. Not everyone, myself included, understands Portuguese, Russian or German, for example. I have studied Spanish and French and some Italian, but my translations are not perfect, so I use Google Translator for them too. I want to understand what my viewers' comments are so that I may respond to them. I believe that by translating their comments, others may enjoy them too. Google Translator is not perfect, but it usually does a pretty good job. I know that when I was unable to read comments during the time a family member was recovering from hospital stays that I did not get a chance to read and catch English or foreign language comments on my videos for some time. As I get a chance to become aware of them now, I will try to translate them also. Thank you again, I am very glad that you like my video. Take Care.Kindest Regards,Sandra

Thank you so very much for telling me about Mr. Mitchell. I went to cendrillon325's website to listen to him sing this song and was quite amazed at not only his beautiful voice, but his ability to put true feeling and the meaning of the words he sang. I left the following comment on cendrillon325's page. "What an incredibly beautiful voice and his delivery of the lyrics is so extremely touching. He does not just sing the words, he feels them in his heart. I'm sure that Mario Lanza must be looking down from heaven on him, listening to him and smiling with great approval and pleasure. Mario, himself, said that he sang everything from his heart and by doing so, he was able to touch our own. So few singers have that talent, but, Mr. Brian Stokes Mitchell does, and in a very grand way. Best of luck to him, his successful singing future is assured."
David, thank you so very much for telling me about Mr. Mitchell's voice. I had begun to give up on ever again hearing a singer put such beautiful meaning into a song.
      My Kind Regards,

I do not have a musical education, although I am an opera fan of many years. I am an educated, practicing portrait artist. I love Mario's singing, not from having a musical background, but, just because he touches my heart with his beautiful voice. Are you a educated musician or singer? Please enlighten me as to how, specifically, you would "clean it up". I am also a retired high school teacher and would love to know the answer out of inborn, ingrained and just pure curiosity. Please do not use too technically musical terms in your response. Please do not take offence, I am simply curious and wish to be enlightened.
It is my hope that you will enjoy my many other Mario videos.
      Kind Regards,
      Sandra

+MegaMusiclover1234 All I meant is it sounds a little muffled. Most of Mario's music is very clear. Of course I have been listening to this all day. I have never heard it before and it is beyond beautiful. I adore Mario and have all his movies (from Amazon,) and many books. He certainly was one of a kind. I don't know if we will ever see his like again, but I'm content with YT and my personal collection. Thank you for this brilliant upload.

      Marie,
Thank you so much for your response. I see that you too are a great fan of Mario. I listened to the recording again and I believe that I heard what you did, a sort of a softening of the audio. I need to listen more carefully in the future. Do you think that it may be due a deliberate choice of the recording studio people or perhaps faulty recording or new recording devices used? Or perhaps it was recorded in a new or different studio? I guess that we may never know. I do my best to choose a good recording and appropriate paintings, skaters, dancers, film clips, etc. to accompany Mario's beautiful voice. But some things are beyond our control. Perhaps, a viewer more informed than we are about such things as different levels and ways of recording voices, recording machines and choosing studios, etc. might be able to reveal why this song has a sort of soft, fuzzy or muffled quality about it. Although the slight difference in recording quality exists, Mario's vocal excellence still shines forth. I am very pleased that you like my video. I have been a Mario fan for over 60 years. Several years ago, while sitting in my kitchen and listening to a DVD which featured several well-known tenors, Mario's turn came to sing. The difference in ability and beauty was immediately clear. As I sat there and listened to him, I suddenly yelled out, "Sing it Mario". Golly, it was just great to listen to him. He brought back so many wonderful memories of listening and seeing him live on T.V. I agree, I don't know if we shall ever see his like again. May God rest his soul, he sings with the angels now.
Thank you again for your kind response, I appreciate it very much.
      Kindest Regards,
      Sandra

Dear Sandra-I believe the critics thought Mario Lanza On Broadway was his worst album. I don't have it but if you do, do you agree? To me I think Mario is superb singing this beautiful song. Fondest regards.

If he had lived another 15 years, he could have played Debeque in South Pacific and would have owned the part, in my opinion.

      Mic,
We, as Mario lovers, would have loved for him to have lived longer in order to sing such beautiful songs in such beautiful movies. But, thank goodness that he recorded this song and so many other beautiful ones before we lost him.
      Kind Regards,

Diese CD habe ich auch, die Aufnahme ist sehr schlecht, deshalb hört sich Lanza so fremd an, das ist nicht von RCA und nicht von Sony, schade.

There are a few bad notes in this rendition that make me go "eek". Should never have been put in the can, but re-done. I believe this album was rushed out to make money, and does Mario Lanza's reputation poor service, considering his very great ability and wonderful accomplishments.

I so wish he'd have sung this when he was at his best (vocally). This is such a beautiful song that's almost ruined by Lanza's vocal performance

A bit late catching up with this discussion. Ron is absolutely right. Mario is awful in this. From his Lanza on Broadway album which was consistently awful-but this and Falling in Love with Love are the very worst tracks. Anyone who thinks these are great has to be tone-deaf. The mis-pitchings and slurrings are so bad one has to think Mario was on a bender or still coming back from one. Truly hideous.

@@51Linz Thanks mate and so very good to hear from you again. It's so sad to think that a fit and healthy Mario could've made such an amazing job of this lovely song and I wonder if he stayed around to hear the playback! Yet another missed opportunity from our beloved Mario Lanza
