As a former police officer I can tell you first hand - never ever ever ever ever buy a “retired” police vehicle. Those things are ran harder and for more hours than almost every car on the road. It might have 150k miles, but that thing has more engine hours than you can believe and is typically ran either balls out or idling in park for hours on end.

Avoid any ex-fleet vehicle with the Hemi specifically. The oiling system on that engine relies on a bit of RPM to get oil splashed and splattered up to camshaft lobes. This is normal for all pushrod V8s, except the Hemi has a very high cam tunnel, so it doesn't get as much oil thrown from the crank as a more traditional layout like an LS or vintage V8. Normally this isn't a problem. But fleets, especially cop cars, can spend several hours straight at idle, leading to premature cam lobe and lifter wear. For a given number of engine hours, you probably want as many miles as you can get on a Hemi. They'll go down the highway until gasoline ceases to exist on the globe, but prolonged idling is their Achilles heel.
This is the only accurate comment on this video, the 8 speeds are pretty bulletproof as well.

I bought a 2013 Cop charger for $9300.00, I got mine 5 years ago and it had 73000.0 miles, they installed new brakes and rear shocks and they installed a aftermarket console and they put challenger wheels and decent tires. Only problem is the vent system clicks for a while while changing the a/c system cause the plastic gear is stripped. It passed inspection and runs strong.
I forgot to say it's also the 5.7 HEMI with the pursuit package, faster than the R/T & it's cheaper to insure.
And they also gave it a great paint job too l
My 2012 challenger has the same issue with the AC making noise. Do you think it's worth fixing? Did you ever get a quote for it?
What part did u replace for the ac vent clicking ?
Yea I wanna know too, with the ac clicking?
I bought a retired 2013 Dodge Charger police vehicle from a private sale about 15 months ago, who'd previously only owned it for 2 months after an auction.
It had 121,000 miles, I purchased it for $9500. V6, 3.6L engine.
My honest take is it's a FUN car, but there's been expensive maintenance even with a good family friend offering good prices on the fixes.
Whay I enjoy is that it feels GREAT, drives amazingly, and it even has the FEINIX Typhoon police sirens still installed and programmed (plays the Bad Boys song, too). Of course, no lightbar or lights. But it has the pushbar, working spotlight, aftermarket wing, leftover decal numbers on the roof they forgot to remove ...
The downsides ... well, Ive had to replace the camshafts, lifters, and rocker arms..
Rear rotors & pads, front pads.
Bad strut arm.
Lower control arms were finished...
Recently the radiator fan exploded and I had to get a new fan and radiator.
It's come to about $5000 - which is on the cheap side considering the massive amount of fixes. I'm 'lucky.' Do I love this car? Oh, yes. Would I do it again? Maybe not..
Yeah that will last you a week or so before you need 10K in repairs
yep
It's not just the high miles you have to consider with these but the incredibly high idle hours they tend to have. There's a reason they're so cheap and the auctions aren't popular.

Picked one up for a decent price and he had a field day on me. He was very very right, thing was a money pit for the next year till I sold it. The chargers hold up horribly to abuse. Older crown Vic’s/sometimes the ford tarus, and the chevy caprices are great, but anything newer then 2010 ish is a huge huge dice roll
Haven't had any issues with mine at all. 2016 With 118k miles on the dash. It runs solid, only problem that it did have was the Carrier Bearing that tends to go out a lot on the RT's/ pursuits.
How is it 5 months later i'm looking to get one
It's not really a secret. Most of us car guys already know about these and tend to stay away from them, especially if they have 150 thousand miles and thousands of hours of idle time. Those cars get the crap beat out of them on the daily... you get what you pay for, and that's a soon to be 8k parts car or going to need a new engine and driveline soon.
Pretty sure that's true with any v8 charger though.
Actually that's not a bad deal. Id take a whole new engine and drivetrain for the price of that

How u find idle time?
I wouldn't spend anything to buy that. Console ripped out, wire harnesses all over and 150k miles. You got ripped off buddy.
And the hubcaps lol
Yeah that stuff plugs into things in your center consol. Like usb ports, the old shifter, the 12v plugs and may have had rear climate control as well. And probably stuff to power their computer and lights and other things if you know what you are doing you can flip this car for a decent profit. May not be a great one but a decent one or make it a fun car and do a rebuild on the engine and then blow the trans cuz of the power and throw a better one in 😂
Chrysler didn't put a centre console in the police package chargers , the police would put their computers there, the console wasn't ripped out.
There are a lot of differences on the police chargers from cilvian use.
Thats almost nothing to fix lol i bet you buy a new pair of shoes every time they get dirty lol. Its called a junkyard. A console in good condition for less than $100
@remgroup8401 150k miles is not nothing to fix. Car is shot. Those are hard miles too, not just cruising highway miles. Ridiculous.
Mine was only $10,777.99 and all it needed was new; tires, brakes, body panels and valve covers, crank shaft went around summer time when air conditioning broke, basically had to replace the whole drive train, interior & exterior. I hardly paid ten grand and I got another fourty grand in repairs. The frame is bent, but it’s all original, so, definitely more valuable than the average hot lemonaise rawd ❤

Cop car prices are usually insanely overpriced. Some times you can find deals on very small municipal auctions for government fleet vehicles for other public services (parks and maintenance being one) that are older but cheaply priced. They’re still going to have very high idle hour’s typically albeit have some semblance of regular maintenance for the core things. The only way you’re getting a deal though is usually a very old undesirable car.

I do agree the v8 and all wheel drive is pretty sweet, however the 5.7L hemi has a big problem with oil starvation at idle speeds, and that causes the lifters to start ticking and chewing up that camshaft. In my state a ex police car automatically comes with a salvage title. I was getting ready to buy a crown Vic back in the day, and had that title. So I ask around and come to find out all of them have that title. Even at our auction they will tell you that those cars come with that title
I’d love to have an old charger just to mess with people. But seriously the idle time on those cars is insane I’d imagine you’d have a ton of mechanical issues. The Hemi cams don’t do well with long idle times.

Uhm 150,000 miles on a Mopar is impressive. Granted it’s about to blow up, but it’s impressive it made it that far none the less.
