Honestly I never knew how risky being a stunt man really is.. wow... major respect for real
Yes, they do it all.
Actually that stuntman was Denzel Washington himself if memory serves me correctly. Read in the trivia section of this movie’s IMDb page that he did his own stunts in this movie
i loved that they used live action trains instead of models and after affects caue you get natural reactions from people who think its real and start to record it. gives it a more realistic affect
Yes I believe it's stated that in the old days special effects looked fake but felt real nowadays special effects look real but feel fake.
waiit... Does that mean that the crowds gathering to watch "a runaway train" are essentially volunteer extras in these scenes?
With the relative safety modern trains allow, I would bet a large enough budget would even today allow a runaway move to be shot completely like this. Of course using camera angles to make 25mph look like 70.
Yes I agree! They did it in the movie the fugitive
The tipping over and the grey SD40 explosions were cgi
Tony Scott was the luckiest film maker ever. From race cars to F-14 Tomcats, an aircraft carrier, a freight train plus endless explosions; he got to play with with 'em all.
my mind is blown how this film was made. trains are really really expensive, as is the paperwork to have actors jumping from carriage to carriage. not to mention 3 helicopters. just nuts!
i know a few stunts were real trains, but if there were models used, they must have been HUGE maybe even 1/2 scale!
rjc0234 the movie maker actually paid to blow up engines its crazy!
rjc0234 you can find online, they had some mock up locomotive cabs, full size, that were pushed along the rails by those pickup trucks with rail wheels.
The engines (7375, 7346) were ment to be scrapped... I know it from somewhere
Alvin, I read that too
screw the stunt man, you guys see how close those helicopters were getting to the train?
And to the power lines.
Those are trained professionals. No pun intended.
and each other don't forget that.
That was Franklin
Imagine what would happen if the helicopters hit the train or powerlines
You filmed them filming!

This is dangerous rip
For those wondering if the sparks were real, they were not.
There was a driver in the cab of 777, this scene was under control and the train going 15MPH through that curve, the sparks are being emitted from a smoke machine or something. All other effects such as the train going one sided in the movie were done in post production. The only thing dangerous about this scene, in particular, is if that stuntman didn't make the landing.
Edit: Stuntman may have been Denzel, we will never know.
So they sped the scene up to make the train look fast?

that stuntman making that jump was beast!

just seeing the sparks coming off the wheels... ONE WRONG MOVE WITH THE THROTTLE AND EVERYTHING COULD END IN DISASTER...

The Punisher 666 So who is doing the stunt work on that train?
RUclips recommended me this video after 10 years. It means I was just 19 years that time. Thanks for uploading 💓😉
I ABSOLUTLY love that movie. Seen it six times now. Never get bored. Nice to see real life stuff.
I’ve watched it about the same amount of times never get bored of it 😂
My uncle/godfather was a B&O engineer. He drove those same tracks regularly. My grandmother lived in Rose Hill Towers facing that line; uncle would let go two short toots on the engine's horn whenever he drove past.
That was the 60s. Today there's not much left in Bellaire.
The last film of Tony Scott. Great director. RIP.
Tony and Ridley - such PROLIFIC brothers. Sad for all of Tony's battle that he chose to end his life that way. R.I.P.
Indeed best of the best

Actual behind the scenes quality
Interesting that the stuntman (or maybe it was Denzel?) was filmed jumping from car to car during ths Stanton Curve set piece. Not only is that WAY more dangerous than doing it while going straight over flat ground, but it didn't even make it into the movie. In the film, Frank stays holding onto the handrails on the tank car for the curve part.
From what I have seen they probably wanted to make it more realistic that he wasn't jumping from car to car while in the movie a 70 mph train would be tipping on a sharp curve, so they may have just stuck with him holding on, or possibly the director just didn't want to go with that, but in the movie I believe there are some scenes where he is jumping from car to car, just not on the stanton curve.
@@owendahlke6666 train is rare is go?
Movie was part inspired by the CSX 8888 incident and an old 80's movie - Runaway Train...
only 2000's people remembers that
ElfNet Gaming the old 80's movie In the train scene, was actually filmed on the line I live beside in Havelock Ontario Canada
i know
I don't think this movie had much of anything to do with Runaway Train.

Real stunts! That train moving quick around that curve. Very cool shots, great consist, and an awesome movie!
I can't help but appreciate the skill of those helicopter pilots!
It looks absolutely insane, and yeah they are just looking for the best shot, but with that effort they deserve it.

Its really cool how their filming a real train in a movie.

How does that work? That doesnt make any sense....
Just kidding, good joke lol.

Thank you. Didn't know what to look for
@@michaelprosperity3420 The credits, normally.
Denzel Washington was probably nowhere in this area when the action was filmed. He could have flown home, because it takes days to execute this film work. It's all film professionals, hired railroad engineers, hired copters and a stuntman who replaced Washington's character because of the danger involved. Oh, and local citizens rubber-necking the action.
1:21 Frank barns on the tankcar
Dang I'm so jealous that you actually caught that on video
Крутой фильм!!! Хоть и 10 лет прошло. На прошлой неделе на TV показывали, решил посмотреть еще раз. А тут случайно попал на кадры съемки!!! Респект бро!!! Привет из России !!! + Лайк !!

Oh, man, that scene (among others) had me on the edge of my seat. :D All around an amazing movie, made even better by the events it was based on. Although to be honest, I'd have hated to have been anyone scrambling to stop that beast. Jesus H...!
Wow that’s crazy u saw one of the most famous train movies in action
That's awesome that you were there for that scene. A true memory!

@@justanotherasian4395 Let's not forget the majestic sight of him strapped to the outside of a plane during take off.
Is this some irrational boomer logic? This movie only came out 10 years ago. Stunt people haven’t stopped doing crazy stunts, they just do them in a way that doesn’t put them at unnecessary risk. Dead/maimed stunt people aren’t something to be proud of.
@@breck1637 Regardless of being some irrational boomer, there was far more originality and taking chances then there is not. Plus most safety devices have always been around. Have you heard of Buster Keaton? Check out some of his stunts. Granted, it is not a good thing to subject stuntmen such extreme stunts, but he was the master stuntman in the early days of movies.
@@iamnumfive "there was far more originality and taking chances then there is not." Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that there was more originality in the good ol' days? Also, taking more chances isn't inherently a good thing; a dead/injured stunt person isn't very useful.
"Plus most safety devices have always been around." This is far too vague to be meaningful. Around since when? The 40's? 50's? 60's (this is the correct answer btw)? Even if they were around, that doesn't mean they were widely used. Older generations aren't known for their concerns over the welfare and safety of workers.
You're suffering from juvenoia - irrational hostility directed toward younger generations. It seems as though you can't fathom the "kids these days" actually doing something in a better way than the old folks.
@LionelKid18 Thanks Heath, I was around for about 2 weeks when they were shooting down here, Wish i could of got more video but I was busy... Oh well. Thanks for watching!
Its pretty cool that you can even see the metal piping that fell off the train as it came around the curve in the movie!
I watched this from atop of the hill behind these guys with a couple of Bellaire's finest.
I know the train was the main focus.
But watching those three helicopters fly around the train and not crashing into each other was quite the show also.
Great movie. Glad nothing was nuclear on board the train when the actual event took place.
Took me a min but I finally realized this is them filming the unstoppable movie.
Holy shit that stunt man has some balls to jump from one tanker car to another especially going over a bridge, with the size of his balls i am surprised the bridge didn't collapse when he jumped. Stunt men don't get enough credit, everyone goes nuts over an actor but no one ever thinks about how many stunt men risk their life filming the best parts of the movies. 99.9% of the people couldn't name a single stunt man, even from the most famous movies of all time, and i will admit my self that i don't know the name of a single stunt man.
So on behalf of all people i would like to thank each and every stunt men in the world for risking their life to bring us the most amazing movie scenes of all time.
Yakima Knut who worked with Heston on Ben Hur
Wow, that's really cool that you were able to see them doing this scene! Awesome video! Great movie as well.
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing this. Behind the scenes! Three helicopters? Film vehicles in action. I was picturing the movie in my head while watching this. And I love trains. 😁
Wow just like the Wild West. That guy has serious cojones. Wow the train was not going slow either. Another comment you would think that that engineer would finally figure out that something's up with the train with all those helicopters swinging around him grief
At that stage in the movie everybody knows that the train is a runaway. The locomotive you see at the rear of the train was (according to the movie) driven by two drivers who had managed to catch up with the runaway train, couple up to it and had managed to slow it down just enough so it didn't derail going around the curve. They realise they still can't stop the train completely and the youngest of the two drivers volunteers to jump wagons to the front of the train so he can enter the cab of the runaway loco at the front and apply its brakes to bring the train safely to a halt before it reaches the end of the line.
I'm a railenthusiast and I like to play Trainsimulator!! I came around the Movie and I liked it very much! Wanted to see where they shot the scenes and if it realy existed!! Ans it does, exept of the oiltanks on the side of the curve! And now I could see a video of the shooting of the scenes, including the carjumpings!!! Absolutely Great!!!!
The man on top of the train was frank barns
His real name is Denzel Washington his movie name was frank Barnes
+Leane Aarcs the man on the top of the train was not frank ..the stuntmans name was clay

When I was a kid, my parents took us to Moundsville to watch the filming of a movie. Big league back in the 70's.

Studio: How many helicopters do you need?
Director: Yes
This movie was a masterpiece no CGI just real exploding trains, jumping on train cars and helicopters everywhere like dude.
No it was very fake trust me railroaders in my family they all laughed at it. Lots of cg in this .
@Seaboard1321 normal track speed is 10mph, they were doing about 25mph
Woah that's scary damn
There were spark producers embedded into the wheels of the locomotives to mimic the effect of a train coming close to derailing.
Well, it wasn't real because they were filming.
I wonder how it made it look like it was derailing. Now, DO YOUR SCIENCE!!! xD
That was awesome. Never saw that view of it before!! Yes stunt man too was boss!!

So many helicopters makes you worry about the potential of an accident of someone isn't paying attention for a split second.
Wow! That's very interesting. That was a good movie-but it sucks that that one guy (Judd Stewart) died and that his locos got destroyed. :( And I even noticed the Denzel Washington jumping from one tank car to another!

Jodi Bertholf yea i was talking about the movie but i forgot the dude who was trying to stop it with other train
Päärynäkuningas ! Oh that guy, I still wonder why he didn't jump onto 777.
Jodi Bertholf he didnt have time to jump
Unstoppable is the best description for Tony Scott's over use of helicopters during this film.
Did you know that those big chemical barrel buildings that you see at the side of Stanton curve arent actually there. They are just special effects. And they edited this scene to make the train almost fall off the bridge.

I know! A great editing job of you ask me!
@Sapphire Dreamstone How do you know it? >:)

I wonder if that was Denzel who jumped from car to car
yes it was
diedre johnson it was a stunt double
diedre johnson and John Knox, it was supposed to be Denzel. But it was a stunt double
This is so cool. Your so lucky to be able to film this!!
Edit: also I love that they edited the train almost falling off instead of actually doing it! Even Frank is jumping on top!
I loved this movie, but then i realized "what if this ACTUALLY happened?!!!"

"Crazy Eights"
Hot Rod Daugherty It did in 2001.
8888 was actually not the only time a train got away from anybody. I remember stories of a train car that got loose into Canada. But, it’s also a fairly common occurrence in Japan
This is one of my favourite movies. And I’m glad they didn’t do this in the movie but in reality, when they put the two locomotives in front of 777 to try and stop it, they could’ve just jumped from one locomotive to the other over the hand rail
If you watch the behind the scene interview, that was really Denzel Washington. He said no stunt double: "It was really me..."
I remember this happening and not as a movie I remember the real deal
Crazy 8s was nowhere near as exciting as its story was made out to be. Coaster that was stopped within a few miles, by the independent if I'm not mistaken?

very cool wasnt sure if they used a real train in filming or models, but this proves it was real.
