  • The end of sitcom Executive Stress and the beginning of Boon lead into a full edition of News at Ten from 22.11.88, complete with ads and continuity from Granada, and Charles Foster fronting Granada Reports.
Of particular interest is the item at 32:08, which unveils an early mockup design for "the phone of the future", or - based on its feature set - what we'd now call a smartphone.

Lovely trip down memory lane! Similar bad news stories to those we see today but it feels like a much nicer era. 😊

That's because social media didn't exist. Only place you'd hear news back then was on the actual news. Now every person has their own platform and it's constantly in your face. You're right though, the 80s were better times

Thank you. This is another way to learn some history. I like the way Charles Foster was having none of that nonsense from the Iraqi ambassador from the embassy and he just cut off his lies 🤥.

When you heard the signature tune to news at ten it meant "Get to bed, It's school tomorrow"

For me, that was the Nine O'Clock News on BBC One, however Fridays and Saturdays and school holidays I was allowed to stay up late.

22nd November was the coldest day of 1988, and the coldest day of 1988/89 winter. A very poor winter, the warmest winter in over 100 years.

Love the mobile phone preview. Reality was it would take a lot longer to get mass adoption of the smartphone which in essence was being shown here in 88

I remember using touchscreens at an American science park in 1988, although they'd already been there for about 5 years at that time. Also tried a mobile phone around that time, so I wasn't surprised to see those two technologies added together.

November 22nd two years after this date would be a horrible date for Thatcher, the date she announced her resignation on November 22nd 1990.
