- Here is Trevor McDonald with the News at Ten from ITN on Friday 2 May 1997 - with the results of the general election.
Michael Brunson shows Tony Blair's journey from Islington to Buckingham Palace and then to Downing Street, while John Major goes to the Oval after handing over the seals of office. Hugh Pym introduces the new Cabinet. Tim Ewart then recaps the election night drama, and Robert Moore comments on the forthcoming Conservative leadership election. The last constituency to declare is Winchester which goes to the Liberal Democrats; Richard Lindley shows their successes.
In part two Norman Rees speaks to Christopher Leslie who has at the age of 24 unexpectedly beaten Tory grandee Sir Marcus Fox. (The gap in the middle of this report is due to the tape running out.) David Rose shows the result from Scotland, and John Irvine has news of Sinn Féin successes in Northern Ireland. Jo Andrews speculates on how 10 Downing Street will cope with the Blair family. Michael Brunson then comments on the new situation of British politics. At the end the events of the day are set to music.
One of the great day in uk history 💖💚❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💖❤️♥️
This was the first time I had the opportunity to vote in a general election. I voted Labour of course. I remember it was a beautiful sunny day the morning after. Great days.
Which constituency were you in?
I remember it like it was yesterday, stayed up all night and watched it, I was so happy the Tories were out, hoping it happens again soon!
I voted Pantsdown '97
So sad watching this in 2023 as this once great nation continues to be ruined by the last 13 years of toxic Tory government. This was the last era of hope for the country.
This is the last election I was too young to vote in. I remember watching the news that day, with the crowds of Blair supporters chanting “Tony! Tony! Tony!” And singing “Labour’s coming home”. I don’t think we’ve ever had an election before or since which caused so much enthusiasm.
The crowds were handpicked Labour supporters arranged by Alistair Campbell. A stroke of PR genius but still ultimately staged.
@@JD-Media Makes sense, I should have realised. Still fun to watch though.
1992 had ironically more enthusiasm as it had a much higher turnout of 78%, compared to 97’s turnout of 71.2%
@@JD-Mediaso what?
Or more disappointed...I was in my first year of high school.
As I left in 2001 there was an election characterised by apathy and disinterest.
If you ever go the races, take Rupert Murdoch with you. You'll be guaranteed to win every time.
did not work in australia in 2022
A sign of the things to come. The "crowd" in Downing street were primarily Labour party workers and volunteers.
Yes! I went with a friend to join in the celebrations in Downing Street and we were not allowed in.
I was never a fan of John Mayor's government but compared with the skip fire of a government we have today Mayor's team were dynamic and professional. And i feel almost nostalgic for those days.
Indeed. The current incumbent makes Major look like JFK
Watching in June 2020. Different days.
The world was a very different place then.
Simpler, Less anxious times.
three months after diana princess of wales died.
I was 13. Just moved to a new high school, making new friends, just introduced to Resident Evil and Silent Hill and frlling for a girl in my class. Sigh, how much I miss those days. Infinitely better than my crappy life roday
After 13 years of the current "Conservative" Government there's barely a single socioeconomic measure where the UK isn't worse off than it was when Labour left office in 2010. Labour gave us more than ten years of unbroken economic growth, even with the financial crisis we were in a strong recovery in 2010. One the Tories quickly smothered and we've never recovered since.
0.1 percent growth wasn't a strong recovery.
Tony Blair didn't agree with most of Brown's handling of the economy post crash.
Plus the international economic boom of the 1990s and 2000s was enjoyed by all governments around the world.
@@johnalbentBy the same token so was the crash. The Tory cuts however almost caused a double dip recession, which certainly wasn't something that happened in the other major economies. Fast forward to now, and we're easily the weakest of the G7. The Tories own that, end of.
I think you are being vastly more uncharitable than you should be to Gordon Brown post-crash. No other world leaders had the answer like Brown and Darling did. Was it a relatively weak recovery, you could argue so. But for what its worth, Brown and Darling are largely responsible for helping mitigate the fallout from the great recession not only in Britain but the US and arguably the world at large. @@johnalbent
Obama didn't have the answers, they all looked to Gordon.
@SplashTasty that's codswallop. The IMF criticised him, the EU criticised him, Tony Blair criticised him, even members of his own cabinet criticised him.
His bailout of the banks is taken from Milton Friedman's economic history that said the crash of 1929 wasn't responsible for the Great Depression...the banking collapse that followed it was. Nothing original to Brown.
The morning of May 2nd 1997 Cherie Blair was walking like John Wayne.
And the big media was never happier....lol
What a day that was
In the 90s we all
Imagined how great the future would be flying cars , free energy , computers etc etc never did anyone say it would go downhill like it has.
Even if a lot of Blair’s policies ended up quite badly (and he was possibly a war criminal), in the current political climate it’s hard not to look back on this and feel melancholic. I mean, shit. What happened to us Britain?
Hopefully Starmer don't turn out to another Blair (should he get elected as PM)
Tony Blair happened to Britain.
No possibly about it, he was a war criminal
People learn what War criminal means challenge
thanks for replying back
4:40 Strong technocratic energy
was 4 when this happened hence my tweet on tv in 2017 this was a fresh start for me
as for d the e it felt good
Interesting to see how times change, as Dorrell (one of the men mentioned as a potential leader) has now left the party.
good xxxx

@@BossySwan why are you everywhere

I want the new Labour leader in the near future
I want to rule
These really were the good old days. A Britain that was open, outward looking and internationalist. Not the UKIP loving Brexit hell hole of today.
You have Labour to blame for that.
i would agree that bringing the mass immigration of the mid noughts was a mistake. It should have been carefully managed and the driving down of wages did hit the labour party traditional base.
However a large factor was due to the financial crash. Something which affected the world and was outside Labour's control.
Get rid of Theresa may
Remember it was Major (not Blair) who signed the Maastricht Treaty; which allowed the free movement of people.
ie the immigration that occurred under newLabour would have also occurred under a Tory administration.
Hoping this will happen again soon, and we thought that the Tories were bad back then!
It will. Keir will sweep to victory next year
i wonder if they booked the removal vans in advance
0:12 This Music Is Funky. Thanks Mate. X
Oh Happy Happy Day. The best 13 years of my adult life.
Young Chris Leslie! Lol
Had a decent 10yrs before the banking crash and recession hit hard.

Blair would have sorted out Russia
Please upload ITN News and weather Saturday 17th May 1997 thank you.
I didn't record it.
Started off well but it was a nightmare to come, how the many were fooled by Blair!
For me the tuition/top up fees and Iraq were the first bad things they did - from then it was just a downfall for new labour
Blairs first term was great 👏🏽 his second term though....
Achieved a lot of good things for ordinary people the Tories would never do, like the minimum wage
The best 13 years of my adult life. The strongest economy the UK ever had. Under Labour we had nearly 12 years of unbroken growth. The Conservatives have barely been be able to manage 12 months. We are POORER on almost every measure compared to the Blair years.
@@pipoo1we had continued economic growth from 1992-2008. It was the strongest economic inheritance in 100 years. So much so that the budget was in surplus.
Actually Labour kept the policies in the first term.
hindsight - check out ' Four Weddings and a Funeral ' - 1994 , Elton John an that - 0-0 - Red + Black camera scene., , " Camilla" ??? truly bizzare film.... who makes films ?? , so if you watch 4 weddings , and realise the implications of what that means.......... , what was going on with that ' Time to say Goodbye ' record , at the TIME. ?? .... are you on that ^^^
I can scarcely think of anything more dangerous than a majority of 70+ seats for either party in the 'two idiot system'. Maggie's third term and New Labour proved that and the Tory govt we have today are proving that.
Hence why a PR system is needed more than ever. Look at countries where they have them like in Germany or Spain. You see different ideas being implemented, higher turnouts as votes/seats are counted equally (and isn't most votes wins all) and quite frankly a healthy democracy where it isn't dominated by ''two idiotic system'' to quote your words
yeah those countries are not stable and their governments are a complete mess lol at least with mandates like Blairs and Thatchers you could govern relatively cohesively for a decade and have your parties backing for key pieces of legislation like budgets and social reform. Is it perfect or even good for that matter? Definitely not. But i'd much prefer to live in a country that doesn't have constant elections and weak coalitions @@DFandV

It Was A Good Month'
To quote one character from The Driller Killer (1979) - with regards to how it turned out many years later - "Can't stomach this a moment longer. Who would've thought it would come to this? Worthless!", yeah, could anyone have foreseen the disaster that was the Iraq invasion and with it Tony's massively shattered reputation?
at least you came back :-)
Major and Blair we’re alike more then they were different. They both got dragged into a middle eastern war by a Bush presidency LOL
Those conflicts were completely different
His never get a knighthood after a war criminal
A war criminal? Where is the proof for that? Criminal means convicted. And what of your terrible English.... ?
This won't happen again.
Hopefully one day !

Labour Leader sir Keir starmer going win the General election this year
And in 2005 Robin Cook himself died. Prior to that in 2003 - Dr David Kelly.
You mean the Dr David Kelly who believed Iraq had WMD and strongly supported the Iraq war?
not much changes. Tories decided over Europe. Who could guess the disaster it would cause.
