      That's Eric Forth - born in Glasgow, he was noted for his flamboyant attire , was Education Minister under John Major then became Shadow Leader of the House under IDS. Died in 2006.

      In all three parties then even if you disagreed with them, quite a lot of them were competent and highly gifted politicians, sadly today the commons is filled with chancers and inarticulate bunglers

      @@Mike20216Largely because Boris Johnson got rid of the competent and gifted ones, and the 2019 election‘s dismantling of the red wall brought in a whole class of grossly incompetent and corrupt Tory MPs. Not to say that standards weren’t on the decline before then, however.

      @@WestminsterWatch Yes it's Jowell. She is sitting alongside Glenda Jackson and Mike O'Brien. Fellow 92 new intake comers. Harman in those days would have been on the opposition front bench :-)

    It almost seems quaint now looking back. It’s about time we got back to example that John Major set of completely taking the personality out of politics. Let us not forget though that while he was at the despatch box pretending that butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth in his spare time he was back scuttling that floozy and full-time gobshite Edwina Currie at every opportunity.
    I would also like to join others in paying respect to John Smith. We went to Iona on our honeymoon to pay our respects.
