    I've tried rocks, sand, mosquito bits, insecticide sprays, bla bla bla! The only thing that has helped, but not eliminated them completely, is the peroxide solution and the yellow sticky strips. Mix 1 part peroxide with 4 parts water and then water plants from above. Typically I like to water my plants from the bottom by letting them soak up water while sitting in a bowl. So when you use the peroxide solution you have to water from the top which makes the soil on top moist, which attracts the gnats! Such a vicious cycle! But if you use the sticky traps, you can catch those little buggers when they fly out of the soil. I also spray the top dried soil with neem oil mixed with water to deter them that way as well.
    Once I had such a bad infestation that I re-potted 90% of my plants to get rid of them. On some of my bigger pots I removed the plant, boiled water and let it drain through the pot. Then I covered the top of the pot with plastic wrap; poked tiny holes with a tooth pick for air flow, and let set for a few days until the soil dried out enough to replace the plants.
    Typically I buy my plants from Etsy sellers and I have no issues with bugs. I am almost certain that my problem started when I bought a plant from Home Depot that was infested. At the time I didn't know what gnats were, and didn't inspect the plant for them. Since then, I have had to pass on buying plants there multiple times because of gnats.
    What really stinks about gnats is that if you have A LOT of plants like me, they don't completely go away. And the yellow sticky strips are not very attractive covered in bugs, so when you have guests, it is pretty gross to look at.
    I sympathize with all of you who may have gnat issues! Like you, I am clapping my hands trying to kill them. When I get one I usually exclaim "Got you, you *****!!!" Good Luck Everyone!

      Loops by Carrie Good advice. I feel the same way about dumping peroxide and water all over a plant that has a knat infestation because it’s just gonna make it wet & attract knats! Also, I tried that and it didn’t work… I didn’t even dilute, it I dumped peroxide right in a plant. Anyway, I threw the plant in the garbage today. Breaks my Heart.

      I had a MAJOR infestation in my beloved Begonia Whitii's.. The smaller one I just repotted but on the larger one I did the peroxide thing. My begonia freaked and dropped some leaves but now she's thriving and putting out a bunch of new leaves. I did flush fresh water after the peroxide to avoid burning the roots. I think repotting is the best solution but an absolute pain if you have a lot of houseplants.

    I’ve used the hydrogen peroxide and water method, sterilize any new soil in the microwave in bags for 3 minutes, and a mixture of water and neem oil both on the leaves and in the soil. These three methods work the best for me and got rid of the gnats immediately. I haven’t heard of the mosquito bits though but if I ever have gnats again I will try them out. Thanks Becca!💚🌱

    The only thing that worked for me was covering with a layer of sand, but especially for a heavy infestation, you’ll need to take it a step further or they’ll just make their way out of any small opening they can find in the sand. After covering with sand, use Mosquito bits as well. This will kill the larvae. You will also need to use sticky traps to catch the adults. So it ends up being a 3 part attack to truly get rid of them. Use the sand layer as a barrier, the Mosquito bits to kill the larvae, and sticky traps to kill the adults so that you end the cycle. Mosquito bits can be purchased on Amazon. As someone who had a severe infestation, and has tried EVERYTHING, I can tell you that this method works.

    You are an awesome presenter!! I’ve watched many fungus gnat eradication tutorials, yours is as or more informative and also fun to watch. You are adorable 🥰 Thank you!
    I have had success eliminating the larvae with beneficial nematodes. The nematode lavage is a daunting process if you have a fungus gnat infestation of many house plants. It requires a follow up treatment in 7-10 days (like conquering nits after killing head lice 😂). The nematodes are expensive but truly, truly worth it if your infestation is out of control.
    So, I started w that but your suggestions are a perfect follow up and preventative plan.
    Keep it up! You are amazing!

      I used tiny containers (like the smallest Tupperware) and did a mix that I used to do for fruit flies. Apple cider vinegar, dish soap, and a sweet scent. I used maple syrup (just a little) or vanilla. Killed hundreds probably. It worked within weeks but I got kind of lazy. Now I see a few random ones here and there but not like it was. Anyway I make a little space in the plant pot and place the container in there. I only fill it half ways because if it makes contact with the plant leaves it will kill them. I killed a couple of leaves that way. And then I just let the trap sit until I'm grossed out or evaporates. And keep refilling the trap. The other thing I think worked , is I pour coffee beans over the soil on some plants. Either fresh coffee beans or used just enough to cover the soil. I think it does help.

    I literally just conquered the absolute WORST fungus gnat infestation I’ve ever have a few weeks ago by using beneficial nematodes (hydrogen peroxide and diatomaceous earth weren’t cutting it like they usually do). I ordered some on Amazon and watered it into my plants over the course of two waterings. I also repotted the 3 plants that were infested the worst because I just couldn’t take it (also suggest putting infested soil in a sealed plastic bag and throwing it away so the gnats can’t escape into your out door space). The first watering seemed to not do anything but 3-4 days after the second application, I was declaring victory. I now use Mosquito Bits every couple of waters as a preventative. I put them in a tea strainer and plop it in my watering can before watering. I also make sure to use it on any recently repotted or purchased plants, and I keep my soil in a sealed plastic container.

    Fungus gnats are attracted to the yellow color of sticky traps. They are one of the best ways to get rid of fungus gnats. As soon as you bring in a new plant or repot a plant, put one or several sticky traps in the soil for 1-2 months (1-2 life cycles). The second is not to over water. Third is to get soil that drains better or mix your soil with perlite, sand, or vermiculite, coconut coir or coco chips to promote better drainage (and don’t let your plant sit in a saucer full of excess water for more than a few minutes).
    Can also bypass the fungus gnat problem entirely by switching from garden soil to soilless substrates or hydroculture pebbles.

    You are so right those damn fungus knats... I usually will take sand an put it in a bowl an add something that they don't like mix it all up take the first good layer of the soil an replace with the sand mixture with them hang up the hanging yellow strips of flypaper an those things ya throw in the drier fabric sheets around the indoor plants but I got to figure out when I'm growing my seed starts indoors before transplant in the garden they seem to get to some of the seedlings
    an weaken them. An always water from bottom as you know. Have a great garden year !!

    Great video, I think we all have dealt with those annoying little buggers at one time or another, I have the sticky traps set up now, and I let my plants dry out extra before I water them again, and I put a top dressing of perlite, but I'm thinking of maybe getting rocks or something else too. I am also going to try the mosquito bits. You gave me some more ammo against those little buggers so now I'm going to try them, on the plants that need a little extra moisture I put those sticky traps and that seems to keep them away from those plants, I just think they are annoying no matter what. Good draining soil seems to help a lot also. Thanks Becca for some very useful information, see you soon, bye for now.

I also have the sticky traps set-up, and now that's hot and dry, it's easier to let me plants dry out more. I have 50+ plants in my studio flat - the invasion of fungus gnats was rapid and they were just everywhere! Lifting up a pot and seeing larvae crawling around makes me want to throw up. I've tried fighting them with flypaper, insect spray, ceylon cinnamon, leca balls, drying out plants to the point where leaves turned yellow and died. I've even used nematodes! Now in a last-ditch effort, I've quarantined them all in my basement, and I'll have to get rid of the soil and repot them one by one... I figure I'll be done around Christmas.
    If it doesn't work I'm giving up on having plants in my home, these past 4-5 months have been so incredibly frustrating. All the time (and money!!) I've invested to have it turn into a seemingly never-ending war with the worst creature I never knew of, that never tires.

    Slap the pots and hold a vacuum cleaner right over it. Gnats flee in a panic and get succed 👌🏻 also -i know you hate it- switch to bottom watering for the time being, it discourages the adults when the surface layer of the soil is still dry af while your plants get sweet sweet moisture. To prevent them from digging in through the bottom/drainage holes👉 old tights/pantyhose pulled up over the pot. A top layer of quartz-sand (like one or two inches) is a trap for young adults tryna burrow out of the soil since it slices them open and also prevents the laying of new eggs 💕

    • @BeccaDeLaPlants
      @BeccaDeLaPlants  4 года назад +3

      Switching to bottom watering temporarily would also be a great solution - definitely agree! I also love the idea of using a vacuum lol.

    • @karolyn8644
      @karolyn8644 2 года назад

      @@dianarizo3748 Yes, just set the pot in a dish of water that is a little bit deeper than the pebble layer. Empty and wash the water container well before using it for another plant to avoid cross-contamination.

    Thanks, great video! we all need help! I also heard you can just add boiling water into the soil and leave it covered overnight to sterilize it. I also mix my mosquito bits). I use this water every time I water! I haven't seen any gnats for months, but yesterday saw 3!!! When I use up my bits I'm gping to buy benneficial nematoids. You water them into the soil and they live there forever and eat all larvae!

    Last year i had a pretty heavy gnat infestation, and found the cycle, when they we're more active (freshly hatched). Then repotted the specific plants which were most affected by them. After i've done that a few times, the gnat numbers dramatically decreased. Like, now its barely noticable. But i will for sure, try out the sticky pads. I grow exotic fruitplants indoors, and they seem to looove those. So i better keep the numbers as low as humanly possible ^^

    I also like to bottom water when I can, but whenever I top water, I use the mosquito bits, and then spray the top of the wet soil with neem oil. Don't which works, but so far I've had a lot of success!
    Also, if you're not into terrariums, you can invest in Fungus Gnat Mites (which will eat them like crazy). They will eat springtails, so not great for terrariums.

    No matter how often I water my plants, I always get fungus gnats. I never over-water and always let them dry out -- like to the bone. I've tried watering them to the point where the water drains out of the bottom, to only watering them with a mug of water and no matter what, CONSISTENT FUNGUS GNATS. I've replaced all of the soil multiple times, have tried mosquito pellets, sand, rocks, neem oil...it's a lost cause. The only thing that works to get rid of them are sticky traps, but I just cannot prevent them. Now, I've resorted to just buying snake plants since they barely, ever need water. But it's a good thing to see that I'm not the only who gets these little buggers!

I dumped the bag outside in the woods (waste of money) . After the fact I realized the handful in the orchid I dont want to pull it apart again. Now I'm looking for a way to get rid of the flies just in case

    Ok. I tried everything but ill share what worked the best. I filled 5-6 bowls with water with a drop of soap and 1 or 2drops of apple cider vinegar and placed them near the window, near the walls and near the plants. I was able to capture not 10s or 100s but 1000s in 2 or 3days lol! I stressed out so much about gnat problem. So sharing this so it can help someone. And dont forget to plan on changing the top layers of soil or do something to kill the eggs.

    Had 6 or so plants that got some gnats from one plant I had brought home. I let the plants dry out. Removed the first 2 inches of soil and threw it out. Put mosquito bits within the soil and watered the plant. Then covered top soil with black sand from the dollar store. Not sure if the sand will have an affect on the plants. Like stopping it from being able to dry out, etc... but haven’t seen any gnats yet 😊
