  • In this video I show a simple leader that I use for the bulk of my stillwater fly fishing. I also show how to quickly change your stillwater fly line without needing to rethread the line and leader through your rod.
    Thanks for watching. Please head on over to Tacticalflyfisher.com after watching to check out our store.

    Efficiency! It appears to be a great idea for heavier (striper, redfish) rods, too. Good stuff, as always.

      I'm sure that it would work fine for larger rods and fish with the necessary upgrades in leader and tippet strength. Have fun on the water!

    Greetings from the Emerald Isle of Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪, what leader setup, would you recommend for fishing for large rainbow trout on Stillwater lakes, using articulated streamer and zonkers, love the videos 🇮🇪🇮🇪

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  3 года назад

      You could probably use a similar system. You would want to pair it down to one or two flies and increase the tippet size. If you still found it difficult to cast you can increase the butt section size until you get the properties you like.

    would you do this leader with a midge tip line or to fish chironomids on a floating line too?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  3 года назад +2

      Yes. It’s still the same. Since the leader length affects your depth more on that rig you can change the the lengths in between flies more to suit your chosen depth.

  • @WaltzFly
    @WaltzFly Год назад

    Question, instead of doing a triple surgeons knot for your tags, have you thought about micro swivels to attach your tag and point fly?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  Год назад +1

      You can certainly try it. It still takes 3 knots to set up though instead of one and if you’re fishing small flies even the tiniest of swivels is likely to look unnatural sitting near a chironomid pupae or something similar.

    • @WaltzFly
      @WaltzFly Год назад

      @@tacticalflyfisher3817 when your tag end runs out of line from changing flies how do you tie on new line? Wouldn’t there be a knot left on your line?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  Год назад

      With a 16/20 knot to my fly and practice at reducing the length of tippet wasted, I can get 5-6 fly changes out of a dropper tag. By the time I make that many changes my leader usually has some sort of issue from use and it's time to replace it anyway.

    The Hover line you were using looked clear .What brand is that please?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  3 года назад

      The hover line was the blue one. The clear line was a clear camo intermediate. Both were SA stillwater lines that we have in the shop. In the slo mo footage of me I was actually switching back to try and get another take that was more in focus so it was probably a bit misleading.

  • @beyondtheriverllc

    With the longer tags for the increased movement, do you find they tangle more or less than shorter tags? And how do you adjust your cast if at all to avoid tangles?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  3 года назад +3

      They occasionally get more half hitches than shorter tags but the tangle rate isn’t a dramatically higher. I use a slightly oval shaped Belgian style cast to help avoid tangling but as long as you’re in control of your cast then tangling isn’t a major issue. Two flies are obviously better in this regard as are weightless or lighter weighted flies.

    Thanks. Irve

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 года назад

      A nail or needle nail knot is fine. It's pretty thin compared to most butt sections so as long as you tie the knot without bumps and you trim the fly line flush it slides pretty smoothly.
