  • Karen McCartney highlights some of the world’s most interesting living spaces and awe‑inspiring homes -
A super house is one that delivers a 360-degree completeness of form, its exterior and interior have a seamless execution and above all else it is awe-inspiring. This quality can be elicited from the perfection of its natural setting, a remarkable use of materials, an exceptional level of craft, groundbreaking innovation or a use of space that lifts the spirit.
The criteria for what makes a house ‘super’ is highly personal and hence is different for every person. Super is not about size or scale, it is about homes that are imbued with a quality that money alone can’t buy. To some people it might be a humble shack with all pretence stripped away, to someone else it can be about the relationship with nature and the manmade controls that facilitate that experience. This exhibition provokes thought, both about ways of 'living beyond the everyday', and also what 'Superhouse' means to you.

Watching this hurts so much as someone who dreams of living in a beautiful space but is stuck in poor circumstances. I think there is real opportunity to make affordable home design for low-income areas. We are a reflection of our environment. Imagine how we could improve peoples lives in low income areas and how improved lives would reflect back into a better society.

I love design that DEMANDS creativity when working with constraints, that is, money, space, and materials. Now that is architecture! My favorite house was the super three-four story city house on the corner...Wow! what a beautiful, light filled space! I could see myself living there with my 5000 books...

I agree. It also lacks elegance. The bigger they are the less elegant they are. They were constructed more as an experiment for the architects than living space. Aesthetically they are more like enormous sculptures than personal spaces for families. The video is a good watch though.

The expert here chose my favourite Lautner house after his Arango-Marbrisa house in Acapulco. My fav house in this vid is the Flinders house, what I liked about it, having never seen it before, was initially I did not necessarily like the first image of the home but found myself falling in love with it the more it was revealed. The placement on it's site, the placement of the large gum and pine trees in respect to the home, the clear lawned landscape and the wall with the front entrance door and garages, along, with once inside, the curved hallways with hidden doors and the dramatic or theatre like stairs leading up to the main bedroom, all combine to make the home...sublime

Did the editors get the brief? We’re no longer in the modern era but the age of the anthropocene. That is modern human lifestyle has had a profound impact on our planet’s climate, ecosystem and organisms. To continue to uphold large concrete, steel, and glass houses inhabited by a few people is willful ignorance of global consciousness. These materials create a lot of pollution and the houses when finish consume huge amounts of energy. There’s nothing to celebrate here. Please educate yourselves to help transition our societies towards a future that our children and all the animals in our precious planet can thrive in.

I love digital books. So I feel physical books in bookshelves instantly antiquate what would have been a fresh feel layout. For many, bookshelves are a practical wardrobe element for their collection. But, like wardrobes, they look smartest when hidden and blended into the background, rather than being an oddity feature.

My comment is as follow :There is no element of 'super' in any of the houses other than high expensive budget and glamorous architects 'standing' on their works. A house must be livable not sculpturous or artistic looking , that is the primary reason .The art of 'fengshui' is the best measurement either a house is a house or simply a creation by an architect. In summary, I adhere the phrase 'Form follow function' as the basic fundamental if a space has been given judgement for its existence in relation to the universe as a whole.

Looking at people building unique houses has always raised a few philosophical questions in my head: what's the purpose of all those? Do humans really need to live in large air-enclosing spaces? People love plants in their home but there are many damaged natural environment that need to be repaired. I wonder if they ever think about investing their tremendous amount of money to actually restoring nature.

Th'ere's several "super duper" homes where I live most of the time, and it's pretty darn cold. Try minus 30-40F during the night in the months of January and February. It's even more crucial having good efficient design in cold climates, it's rather a matter of survival and of having and saving energy during the winter months.
