    I could see Apple modifying HomePodOS to communicate with a local AI-capable device so that they could still take requests and deliver results by communicating to that device without needing all of the processing power in each HomePod.

      I agree, this seems like a logical approach. Apple have already setup additional communication between Mac and iPhone with iPhone Mirroring, so AI offloading seems reasonable. It would also be very Apple to create a HomePod/AppleTV Pro, pricing it to sell would be difficult though.

    I’d pay handsomely for a HomeKit hub that will process most of my requests locally. I can see a wold where an M4 based system with 16gb of ram and a 12 inch screen would sell for under 1k. It’s essentially a MacBook Air without a keyboard, a smaller screen, no battery, but better speakers. Alternatively, a powerful Apple TV also makes a lot of sense.

      This may be why they delayed the Apple TV hardware update that was rumored. They could be planning a smart display or TV/game console like Nvidia Shield,especially with how focused they were on gaming platforms at WWDC. Powerful tech for a hub and good revenue from games for them.

    Hopefully, with the early fall release, we'll get an M-series-based AppleTV (8k?) that will provide more powerful gaming AND the ability to act as a selectable primary home hub/clearing house for Siri voice requests. I think this is part of the reason why they opened up allowing non-Apple HomeKit-enabled devices to be able to essentially act as remote microphones for Siri requests--your HomePods will essentially become smarter versions of that kind of device where Siri requests are concerned.

    I was thinking of moving away from the amazon ecosystem and going with the homepods potentially with an extra ipad air M1 that I have for my kitchen. I believe you can wirelessly connect your ipad to a homepod to be used as the speaker output for the ipad. Will this setup give me the same functionality as having a home smart speaker with a display and the power to use Apple intelligence functionality? The other room I would want to use a homepod mini is my office where I have my M1 macbook pro. I keep my macbook plugged in and on all the time. Again, I am not sure if you could wirelessly connect a homepod and use it as the speaker output my Macbook. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I do like the sound quality of the homepod speakers including the homepod mini. Sorry for the long comment.

      With Apple AirPlay (built right into the OS of all(?) Apple devices), you can send audio to nearly every one of your other Apple devices.
      The full size Homepods have the ability to pair in stereo.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  7 месяцев назад

      This could work out nicely with a couple things to keep in mind. First is I would create a Shortcut that sets the iPads audio destination to the desired speakers so it's easy to do in one tap. You could make a couple for different zones in your home where audio plays. Second keep in mind that AirPlay multi-room audio isn't the fastest and most responsive system for this. Controlling Sonos speakers over the Sonos system will give you faster performance but the iPad doesn't lock you into just using AirPlay. You are making me want to build one of these for myself lol!

    I am not a tech expert but what happens, e.g., currently when you touch or get near your homepod or minis and it transfers music to them. Now, what happens if you touch or get near them for the purpose of allowing them to now be just an external microphone that will transfer your search query back to your iphone that will do all the A.I. stuff and then broadcast it back to your homepod/mini that way no one has to run out and start upgrading their homepods/minis

    Why didn’t apple use the “Private Cloud Compute” branding to mean end-user owned devices teaming-up to process requests locally. If an apple user has an iPad with M4, a MacBook with M3, a TV with A15 Bionic, and an iPhone with A17 pro. That is a lot of processing power sitting unused at any given moment.
    If we estimate these chips to be on average about a powerful as M1 that is like an M1 Max chip, but potentially more.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  7 месяцев назад

      It’s a good point that all that power is sitting there. I think the mesh between all that could potentially be slow. But I also think that’s why Apple has gated so much to newer devices. I think they want Private Cloud Compute to only run when it’s absolutely necessary and not for every request from a HomePod mini

    Dumb question -- when using HomePod mini -- is it accessing Apple Music on its own, or being streamed through your iPhone? So if it is, it'd be the same with Apple Intelligence just feeding answers through to HomePod mini?

      It is processing directly from the HomePod, that started in 2021, more than likely new home devices released from apple going forward will be updated with the hardware to support apple intelligence (reminds me of apple switching their laptops and desktops to the m series). It doesn’t stream from your iPhone to your HomePod when it comes to Siri, hopefully that answers ur question

    I have been considering why Apple is allowing us to finally pick which home hub is our default “connected” hub. It may relate to your postulation that we’ll need a beefier hub for controlling AI based commands. If we have just a few new hubs with internal hardware sufficient for executing AI commands, and one of these is the default connected hub, the other hubs in the house could serve as intermediaries between you (wherever you are in the house) and the AI-ready hub. Given how many hubs I have now - especially the HPg2 hubs - I really hope some sort of considered approach like this will be provided. There’s little impact on delay time for sending and receiving the language between our nearby hub and the AI hub and this is the only reason I see for not implementing an approach of this ilk. Other than the boatloads of money they could make from people upgrading…

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  7 месяцев назад

      That’s a great point on why choosing your hub would be so important.

    I did also wonder if Apple might offload “intelligence” requests to our phones. But I fear that’ll make them even slower than they already are. As you mentioned the HomePods are so slow/unreliable I hardly ever use them to control smart home devices (part of my original reason for buying them) because pulling out my phone to ask Siri is quicker and less prone to disaster (turning everything on including opening windows and running vacuums).
    Also small detail, but I like the fact we’ve come up with the same solution for mounting the FP2 underneath a magnetic HomePod mount 👌

      I’ve also long come to the same conclusion about smart buttons and automations.
      My smart home ethos has gone from
      “Smart homes are about being able to control things with your phone or voice”
      To
      “Smart homes are about never needing to use your phone or voice, because everything just happens”

  • @Sah-dd1zh

    I guess you’re right. I kinda wish (and I know they never will) they would do something somewhat like Brilliant where they would just make a small display, like the size of an iPhone, that would replace switches in your various rooms in your smart home and display the accessories within that room on the display. It would be connected to power, have whatever chip necessary and have Siri 2.0 onboard. Basically if Apple did the Brilliant thing, but the Apple way.

    I can see Apple going the route of micro-cloud processing where complex requests are accepted by the smart speakers sent locally to a Mac that's capable of processing the request and then sending the results back to the smart speaker all done via local IP address mapping instead of sending through an external cloud. Ideally, I would love it if this also meant the return of the Apple Airport routers but I’m not so sure that's likely. Can you imagine a router with a binned M1 with 8 gigs ram or even 16 to future-proof?

I’d be curious to know to what extent Apple reads any of these comments, but I would definitely encourage everyone to send feedback directly to the company.

  • @GaryMetzker
    @GaryMetzker 7 месяцев назад +1

    Mmm. Not sure I agree. Seems like there will be a hierarchy of intelligence delegation depending on what is required for a request. If a request is too complicated for a smart speaker the delegate it to a local IPhone, IPad, or MBP with a more advanced neural chip. If that isn’t enough, delegate the request to the Apple Intelligence cloud. If that isn’t enough, delegate the request to ChatGPT. The hierarchy could be configurable depending on privacy needs. Seems like we should be able to continue to use cheap edge devices for local IO while delegating to higher intelligence to l newer local devices or external clouds. Old devices may be recycled to work as local border routers or smart displays.

This happens even though you can immediately go into the Home app and trigger the actions from there. If the device was really having some sort of connectivity trouble, then I would get a no response message in the Home app. So the devices don't have any issues, it's Siri that's the problem.

    To remain relevant Apple is going to have to work this out. Next destination is tech is all of us will have an individual AI with us and embedding one in our home is logical. The question is will it be networked AI or on device AI. On device AI fits Apples agenda but that does not make it a guaranteed winner and it remains the more challenging and expensive of the two for implementation. Looking to Nvidia it is clear that a basic device like their Jetson sits at around $600 and we can expect this to come down rapidly.

    @billsugden 3 месяца назад

    Hopefully Apple Intelligence is exactly that when I ask Siri something hopefully she will actually answer the question like Google does and not say "I found something and you can see it on your phone" if I wanted to look at my phone to find something, I would've searched it there , I want to be able to randomly ask Siri things without getting frustrated and just asking Google instead, I once made a joke video on how I live with three women , my wife Dee , , Siri , Alexa , and of course, Google ;) each have their purpose. It would just be nice if Siri would answer questions directly... since Apple Intelligence does sometimes use the Internet. It wouldn't need processing power to answer questions logically or complete tasks in your Apple environment. ..

    I think they would be much more intelligent when you didnt have to re-install then every 2 days. Or when apple home would stop loosing. Then every other day.

    If they can make a HomePod that doesn’t suck I’ll be tossing all my best home speakers (which also suck but I got most of them free)

    HomePod mini is dumb as it stands today. It does not execute orders by itself except for playing music or setting an alarm. My observation that it goes back to the iPhone or iPad to execute HomeKit or shortcuts orders. That worked with Apple since it is on device processing in a sense. Keeping the same approach as is would be more logical, otherwise you will pay for redundant hardware that you don’t need. 50% of the times, my iPhone picks up the voice command when I’m in closer proximity to the HomePod mini. And when it does not, the Apple Remote stays stuck on the iPhone screen. Since they established a secured line between devices on the network, capable Apple devices can receive the instruction from another device, process it and send it back. Consider it as a local cloud.

      M4 isn’t needed. They could use the chip in iPhone 13 Pro as long as it had 8GB RAM it will still work.

      They likely won't get LLM-based processing of requests, unless there's a way to send that over to more powerful devices in your home. That will likely be slower and not coming soon as Apple hasn't announced anything around it yet.

    Apple still hasn’t launched AI. It will becoming later this year. I’m thinking (and hoping) Apple will then update the HomePods to use AI. Otherwise they’ll become some expensive bricks, as Siri currently sucks! I have one HomePod 2 and six minis.

    There's another way Apple could provide a better-AI experience for people, especially for people in larger houses. They could sell smart-home displays with some level of AI-capability for maybe $250, but then sell a home-hub which has considerably more AI-power. The layout and construction of my (older) house is such that I'd need at *least* five displays to do a minimal job of providing smart-home access everywhere in my house. Add a sixth if I want to have that ability in my garage (which is detached from the house).
    Do I want to spend six times $750? And then I watch the next Apple event which introduces that year's AI-greatness, but to benefit from it I'll have to replace all six devices? I have to say that I'm not eager to live that possible future. But how about spending ten times $250, plus spending $1000 on *one* device in my house which has considerably more AI power? My own "on-premise AI cloud server". And then when the M8 chip is released with 400 times the AI-power, I upgrade by replacing just the one device and not six separate screens?
    What is it that I really want to have in every room? I want a device with a nice touch-screen display, a speaker, a microphone, and the ability to communicate with other smart-devices (using WiFi, Thread, UWB technology, whatever). That's the most that I would like in every room. I also want much better AI ability, but I don't need a device in every *room* for that. It will be fine if I have just one device in my house to handle the AI chores instead of running out to some cloud computer server farm.

      I love the idea of base and sattelite devices if they could get the performance to be fast and reliable. It would help cover homes like yours without breaking the bank or compromising on locations.

    I don't think your concept of scenes and assistants, and such is the same as mine. I don't WANT to install buttons and switches all over my house. I buy smart enabled devices and I do not mind (even currently) how Siri can turn my lights to a different hue, or lock my door. The whole smart home I thought, was getting things done NOT manually. Putting a button ON a desk instead of IN the wall is just installing a button or switch in a non traditional manner to me. I want my assistant to do this stuff....I want it to know MY voice and not that of influencers repeatedly saying her catch phrase and when I ask him/her to place something on my grocery list, it goes on MY grocery list. Being able to have Siri know and keep information about me secure in my eco system would be great for future orders through door-dash...Hey Siri order my go to Door-dash order and pay with my Apple card. Just convenience is all I need, but install more manual items all over my house...naw dawg that's gonna be a no from me.

    If you insult Siri you get "that's not nice" or " I won't respond to that" but if you start with "thank you for" or "you're good at" Siri is happy to respond to any insult. The next Siri is going to profile me to share my comments to my government if I speak against it.
