I find that travel is also a good time for this... while the DM is figuring out encounters or travel time on the map, players can engage with one another on the road.

It's also a great time to teach each other languages and skills, same with being on the road. Wizard learning "magic" (slight of hand) from the Rogue, Bard getting training (athletics) from the Barbarian and so forth. Adds a fun dynamic between player characters.
Edit: also if a PC wants to multiclass into a class that is already in the party, well now you have a perfect RP reason why they were able to do that.

    Hello Nerds.
I have been playing, off and on, D&D in various editions since a little game called Chainmail. I sorta missed everything from the old 3.5 until 5th edition, but I am back into it now.
Having said that... when I was DM'g a group, camping for the night (long rest) was sometimes a chance to see if the players were willing to take a chance when they were in a depleted state. Coming upon the campfire of even a handful of Goblins, after a tough battle in a dungeon, was a good way to add tension to the encounter. Or, the group encounters a campsite that would be perfect, were it not for some other factor, like a sleeping manticore, or possibly what looks like a caravan of some sort already there.
Such 'out of dungeon' encounters can add spice to an otherwise boring event. And yes, I encouraged player-player and Character-Character interactions. Bull sessions where the party strategize about encounters and fights inside the dungeon, etc.
So, even though most camping events will be 'boring' and semi-safe, a DM can add things to keep things interesting. Is that really a caravan? Or is it a Slave Caravan, and after the party beds down, they try to take the party captive to sell them? Is that odd man by the fire just a hunter? Perhaps he is the local Druid, and there specifically to sound out the Party and their intentions in HIS woods. Another such thing might be what seems to be a minor trader and his guardsmen, that in reality is a noble of some sort, with disguised knights.
One of my favorites was the pair of mimics and their pet rust monster. The party finds a dog sleeping next to a campfire, with two tents set up, and obvious signs that the owners are out seeking firewood, or hunting. What SEEMS to be a 'safe' encampment, is actually a dire threat to the party.
There are so many things one can do to make camping out in the wilds interesting. Such as the party camping, and after a few hours, a person wanders into their camp seeking warmth and safety. The party may find that the person is a lost peasant, or a lower noble cut off from his or her guards by some encounter, or even a wandering adventurer that can give them some quest knowledge. And then, there is always the half naked female (chose race) being chased by goblins. Classic.

I appreciate the consistent uploads gentlemen. I have been itching for D&D content, but it seems like my favorite creators don't post a lot to RUclips anymore. But the Nerdarchists remain!
