This is still going to be a tough season for her, handling all the pressure, expectations, and often nonsense hatred in her FIRST ever full season on tour. It's because she doesn't care, which is exactly how she went into the US open. She has never played professionally on clay before, and it's a very different surface to hard, so there are no expectations. With no expectations she enjoys her tennis more, relaxes and expresses herself on-court. Wouldn't be surprised if she wins this.

    Raducanu is actually a better player now than when she won the US Open: she is noticeably stronger; her serve is much better; her forehand has improved tremendously; AND she has added a very useful dropshot to her armoury that was non-existent in New York. In addition, she is far more tactically astute than she was at the US Open because she is an amazingly fast learner. She is going to get a LOT better!!!!

      I've been saying this all along. She just needs matches to get into the swing of things. People forget that 3 of the 4 three setters which she lost she was serving for & within points of winning. You get that from experience. Maybe those loses will help her since there'd have been lessons to learn from each loss and we know she's a quick learner.

    • @davidkeenan5642
      @davidkeenan5642 2 года назад

      She was never that far off with her speed and power in most of her matches this year, but mentally, after winning 11 of the last 12 games in her previous match, and with the memory of the pasting Marta gave her 6 months ago, she certainly looked much sharper. The girls are close in age, but Marta has usually been the better player when they played in the past, so Emma chose to be aggressive from the start. Without a coach she was totally responsible for this strategy.
      Much has been said about Emma's frequent changes of coach, but her father has always decided who would coach Emma, and he has a rather ruthless opinion of coaches. He hires them, drains them of all their knowledge, and then looks for another. This week she coach free, but she still has her physio to keep her fit (and to hold her phone 🙂) and she has others to support her.
      During tournaments 'she' doesn't need a coach! She has a great analytical mind, she just needed the experience of playing week in week out at WTA level. The foot blisters and the hand blisters are signs that she's been working really hard in training, and she's had some really long matches. Plus a bout of Covid didn't help.
      But now she's both physically and mentally tougher. I think the longer she progresses at Madrid, the better she'll get. At Wimbledon she played freely. But she was only there by virtue of her being a promising British player. Sure that's why wild cards are granted. But she and her team knew she'd have to qualify for the US Open, so they planned how she might qualify. Get her to the States weeks before both to gain experience and acclimatise, and then see what happened.
      What happened surprised everyone, including Emma. Her expectations changed during the Championship. She'd qualified, she'd 'earned' the right to compete. So she competed, and she won.
      I think she handled what followed as best as anyone could have. I just don't understand her critics. It's near obligatory that the winner of the US Open attends the Met Gala, but who 'chooses' to visit the US Stock Exchange? Emma did, and she had fun 🙂
      She seems to being enjoying her experience on clay, but never doubt that her ultimate goal is to win Wimbledon. No championship would mean more to her.
