    iPhone has slightly richer colours and great zoom but apart from that I think the Pocket 3 does very well especially tracking. If they could fit a zoom lens into that package it would be truly amazing. I have been waiting to see a comparison. Thank you. 👍

      The Pocket 3 can actually shoot HLG, I actually need to give that a try to see how it competes with the HDR on the iPhone. And the digital zoom is 2x in 4K, 3x in 2.7K, and 4x in 1080. Still doesn’t compete with the iPhone though. But yeah, Pocket 3 easily wins in low light and selfie shots.

    • @ROAMitRALPH

      If you hold the Pocket 3 horizontal/normal, it crops in and shoots at 3K. You can hold the Pocket sideways, like a bike handle, and the camera will shift to shoot vertically so you get the full 4K and 20mm. It’s a little awkward to hold like that to film, but there are still ways to mount it like that. I’m actually looking at the Osmo Mobile too, I keep hoping the OM7 gets released soon since it’s been over a year now since the OM6 was released.

    You probably should have matched and locked the white balance on both. They both shoot Log so I assume it would come down to overall sharpness as I don't expect thereto be much difference when color graded properly. Which means the iPhone wins only on zoom and potentially dynamic range buy I would have to run it in manual mode myself with an ND in order to make that assessment. DJi wins in tracking, bokeh apparently, night mode and with an ND and LOG I suspect the image would be hard to tell apart.

    • @ROAMitRALPH
      @ROAMitRALPH  9 месяцев назад +4

      I thought about that, but I figured a lot of people wouldn’t take the cameras out of auto mode, so I tried to keep everything as simple as possible. Someone who knows how to color grade could definitely make either of these cameras match if not beat a beginner with a full frame camera. BUT, it probably isn’t a bad idea to make a video comparison shooting both in LOG and then comparing the two. I might have to give that a try.

    In most shots the iphone 15 outperforms the pocket, at least for the daylight part.
    Something I noticed in most pocket 3 videos and very noticable in this one side by side with the iphone is that the pocket 3 footage seems "bouncy". Specially when you are walking it looks like it s moving up and down a lot. Is it because the gimbal is so small that it cant compensate walking movement?

    • @ROAMitRALPH
      @ROAMitRALPH  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, the Pocket 3 doesn’t have anything to adjust for that Z-axis “bounce”. You’d have to get some contraption to counter that. You can look at the DJI Ronin 4D, it’s built to deal with that exact issue. You’ll see a lot of videographers like to have some weight to their camera to let the camera guide itself, the lightweight Pocket 3 makes makes the users hand be the guide which makes it not as smooth (not taking into account the gimbal itself).

      I had the Pocket 2 and sold it after I got the 3. Yes, the tracking was terrible on the 2 and I was always hoping they’d fix it via firmware. Even the Pocket 1 had more useable tracking. If you’re mainly interested in the tracking, easy YES to upgrade. The tracking is my favorite part of the Pocket 3. I’ve had a few times where tracking lost me (it lost me in the video in the tracking section), but that’s usually in confusing scenes where I’m not surprised it lost me. Your 12 Pro Max is good if you don’t need to upgrade your phone. I actually did a similar comparison like this on the 12 and 15 Pro Max.

      @@YosiOren the Pocket 2 is still a very good camera. You can get almost the same results as the Pocket 3. And honestly, most people watching wouldn’t even notice the difference. Yeah, I took a big loss when I sold my Pocket 2 and all the accessories I had for it. I just sold everything in one big package. I probably should have just kept it, but I knew if I had the Pocket 3, I probably wouldn’t bring the 2 out much if at all. Sucks that none of the accessories of the 1&2 could work on the 3.

    Nice vid - the iPhone wins some and the OP3 wins some. But the image quality against the iPhone is not why I would choose OP3. It’s about design for the purpose - how it feels to hold & use, the versatility of the gimbled camera head, and the ease of integrating it with film making equipment. Having both these devices to use together is pretty powerful punch ⌁

  • @arnisbrown5848
    @arnisbrown5848 9 месяцев назад +2

    It's an odd comparison since they are different tools that serve different purposes - a gimbal with a fixed lens vs a smartphone. For quality of video isolated it'd be more useful to see the exact same settings on each side by side, i.e. using the Blackmagic Camera app to lock shutter speed at 1/50 in 24fps (1/60 in 30) at the same ISO as the Pocket with LOG profile on both (and transformed into Rec709 in post), and in low light starting at base ISO and slowly ramping up on both in tandem (believe the iPhone in LOG has a sort of second base ISO at around 2000). Using digital stabilization will always result in a degraded image compared to optical stabilization, since it's cropping into the frame and requires an aggressive (low) shutter angle while mechanical stabilization allows the full sensor readout with 180 degree shutter motion blur. Also why it's completely unusable at night (even my 3 year old Pocket 2 is vastly superior to an Action 4 in low light). You can set the level of stabilization on the iPhone (standard to extreme) or turn it off entirely in the Blackmagic Camera app. If you try your action tests on the iPhone using the wide camera with stabilization set to extreme and a high shutter speed (over 1/500) in bright conditions at base ISO it will likely yield stabilization results similar to a GoPro. Would additionally be interesting seeing the Pocket 3 at the same settings to the iPhone in LOG but in ProRes RAW, i.e. 10-bit vs 12-bit. Yes it's nitpicky but again that's because they are two entirely different tools.

    The lightweight camera with small footprint, clear and stable video, the nice low light shooting blinded me for some time -
    but then I realised that as a family vacation shooter this camera is USELESS if it does not offer option of infinite focus.
    If I cannot get my subject and the surroundings ALL in focus, then that defeats the whole concept of vacation shooting -
    the bokeh effect (background blurring) is a massive hindrance than of benefit.
    Maybe if you are showcasing a product or person. Or trying cinematic storytelling - you may find it useful.
    But for millions of simple vacationers like me - who just desired crisp super stable video while travelling, taking in all of the surroundings - this lack of universal focus is a deal breaker.
    Lucky I stopped just short of making payment for it.

      Insta360 just teased their next camera that looks like something that would be perfect for vacation shooters. The low light on it looks like it's going to be really good, I'm assuming it's using AI. That might be the camera you're looking for. I'm definitely looking at it too lol.

    The Pocket 3 is amazing, but so are flagship phones like the iPHone. I recently did a test of the Pixel 8 pro in lowlight on my channel. I think there's only two main reasons to get the Pocket 3, even if you have a recent flagship mobile. 1. Tracking capabilities. 2. Lowlight performance. I think I prefer the mobiles in good light. Takeaway: Pocket 3 is not perfect. We need something similar to the Pocket 3 with Android or iOS and a flagship processor so it can take advantage of the computational photography, videography and AI. Sony?

      The Pocket is good for people who are out all day and want to conserve their phone battery. As a heavy iPhone user, my battery drain is bad lol. But I definitely know what you’re saying. The iPhone is SO good, that just slap it on a gimbal and you’re good to go.

    Honestly the osmo pocket 3 only wins a few shots here for me. Yes, it‘s a bit less noisy on some shots thanks to the 1“ sensor which i really liked, but it gets totally destroyed by the iPhones Smart HDR 5. Both in daylight and at night. However both look really impressing for such small cameras!

    iPhone has pro res and multiple focal length. The pocket 3 wins on price point but the iPhone is more than a camera and the work flow on the phone is amazing. Shoot edit and post . Pocket you have to transfer to laptop or iPad and edit .

    If i were a vlogger who talks to the camera most od the time, id choose the OP3. The bokeh is great due to the 1 inch sensor, form factor is fantastic and is easy to use. Vlogging qith a phone is tedious in comparison.
    The only issue i have with the OP3 is the zoom. With any ohone yiu have 3 l3nses and can shoot a wide vairuty of shots but youre quite limited with the OP3. Id hope the next version will have optical zoom or put cameras instead of one. Thatll be cool.

      100% agree with you. The Pocket is perfect for those trying to vlog. It would be interesting if DJI put their 3 lens cameras on a Pocket (like the one on their Mavic 3 Pro). Would make it bigger, but I think that would definitely make it 10x better.
