@@JustRaine97 two cookbooks by Dr. Michael Greger How Not To Die and How Not To DIET. Try them from your library. There's some recipes on his website to try if that's quicker and easier. At the beginning it's a big task as like anything new it seems tough but try doing one meal time like breakfast. I've had the same breakfast of jumbo oats, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, ginger, fruit (blueberries etc) for years now and never get bored. I progressed by adding cooked soya beans that I blended with dates, prunes, water and added to the oats. I ordered whole grains online and replaced the rice with these wholegrains. Try soups and salads. Try eating beans and lentils to every meal. Cook big piles of your favourite vegetables. Add garlic, herbs, spices, vinegar and lemon as flavours instead of salt (stock). Taste bud cells change over 21 days so reclaim your taste for natural beautiful flavours of plants. There's lots of recipes online but choose without oil, salt and sugar if possible. Good luck. Its a journey but it's worth it. For you and your family.

@@JustRaine97 I am a mediocre cook, but something I made for a friend of mine that is cheap is a banana bread without sugar or wheat (unfortunately still has some calories though). You heat up a cup of almond milk and mix with a nongmo oatmeal (3/4 cup) add one egg, and a mashed banana. Add one tsp of bkg soda and a tsp of cocoa and bake for a hour. The amount of sweetness depends on how ripe the banana is.

You will find me hiking on many days. We both feel absolutely fantastic , energetic and clear headed. Thank you for this show and recommendations!!!!!! Plenty of energy I'll be 60 next year. Calisthenics daily 4 sets of pullups x10, dips x20 or 100+ pushups, plenty of cycling & swimming. Retired from triathlon. Awesome testimony! It's unfortunate that your doc just said to keep doing what you're doing, instead of actually getting interested to learn more! So many doctors are doing this with patients now compared to 10, 20 years ago, now that the research on the efficacy of WFPB has skyrocketed! Hopefully by now you've shared with him all of this! I'm a future doc myself and so blessed to have been learning all of this even before medical school- from these documentaries, the various doctors like Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Brooke Goldner, Dr. Saray Stancic, etc. I've been coaching patients/clients in the last few years to transition to WFPB + other lifestyle changes, and I've seen similar testimonies to yours, which are awesome and inspiring! If you don't mind I'll share your testimony with them, in our next meeting :)

Good video. As a type2 diabetic, I’ve moved mostly to a plant based diet but not totally. I’m with Dr. Zalzal. I’ve successfully removed refined foods and sugar from my diet and my A1C is down to 5.8% from 6.9% and I’ve lost 21 lbs. I did increase my aerobic
activity and that has helped tremendously. I also do Intermittent Fasting 16:8. I read the Forks over Knives article. My main beef (sorry for the pun) with the article is as a diabetic you still have to watch that certain fruits and starchy veggies so as not spike your blood but otherwise, a good article. Good food for thought (sorry I can’t help myself). I love to cook so I have control over what goes into my food. We rarely go out to eat. I have moved to plant-based milk and cut down on meat consumption which has lowered my cholesterol. If you are a diabetic I would say to continue to do your research on foods, check the glycemic index and glycemic loads and keep a journal. That has helped me because I can revisit what is working or not working. As my favorite chef ends his posts, Happy Cooking 🧑‍🍳

My husband and I made the switch to Whole Food Plant Based in June 2011. We’ve never looked back. I had been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 10 years or so before, which made the transition somewhat easier. At 75 and 82, we are healthy and happy on this way of life. The test numbers look good, and neither of us has weight issues. I survived two cancer episodes in my early 50’s, and I’m convinced that WFPB living has kept me from another recurrence. @@toryberch My rheumatoid arthritis and osteo arthritis were crippling to the point of me being unable to dress myself, or get up out of bed, or even stand up from the toilet. I was on potent anti-inflammatories. When I ditched all animal products - and I mean all - and also oil, junk food and heavily processed food, the pain just left over a period of about ten days to a fortnight. A few twinges here and there, but nothing compared to what I was suffering. Natural plant food is generally much cheaper than meat. Oats, simple garden salads with a handful of olives or some avocado, big fresh fruit salads - only two or three different fruits needed, and big plates of steamed or dry roasted or even microwaved veggies, with a nice plant based gravy, are all simple, cheap and easy. Potatoes are wonderful without grease (use your blender to make some natural sauces) and low in calories. Rice, corn, beans, whole grains, and lentils are all much cheaper. Nuts are more expensive, but you only need a small handful of those. And eat from a wide variety of foods to ensure you get everything you need. A B12 supplement very occasionally should be enough as B12 recycles - but it's important to ensure growing kids get the supplement regularly. OR eat water lentil or duckweed, which has recently been found to contain B12. Anyway, just letting you know that even though it seems like hard work, a change of diet actually worked miracles for me and others, and you won't realise how great it is until you try for at least a couple of weeks (with no cheats). I still have terrible pain from fibromyalgia. The food doesn't help that at all, but then there is an emotional factor to that, according to researchers, and that damage may not be able to be undone. I'm still so much better of with just that than all three, I promise. And NO SIDE EFFECTS if it works for you. Best wishes. 🙂

I really love you two docs and your information, thank you. I have been through a range of eating from full on vegan to flexitarian to now back to vegan, but I can’t say I’m vegan because my new car has leather seats and steering wheel… I couldn’t eat anything animal based from the age of 8 when out on a family picnic I saw a truck load of sheep and lambs and innocently asked where were they going? My darling dad said ‘oh they’re just off on a picnic too’. My 7 years older big brother cherished the moment to tell me that where did I think lamb chops and roast lamb came from? Thank you forever Michael. It was all out war in our very English household for a couple of years until my mum gave up trying to make me eat meat, and that was the end of it. Michael however blamed my vegetarianism on why I developed Type 1 Diabetes!! I ended up in Australia, the land of plentiful and endless red meat and have been rubbished for a couple of decades now. I just smile and tell them that my blood pressure is 110/75, cholesterol is 2.1, my HbA1c is 6.1 and ask how they’re doing on the handful of heart, blood pressure and all of the other meds they swallow daily? I never get into any kind of conversation about animals and farm chemicals as it’s caused a huge amount of trouble with my youngest son who owns a massive property (cattle farm) out in the middle of Australia. I’m happy to let it be and let people find out for themselves if that’s what they choose. Sorry for rambling on, I came here to get info on my 14 week old TKR! It helped to a degree but the problem is that he eats lots of plant based meats which the doctors who went vegan after researching it say the plant based meats are like vegan junk foods. Because my doctor wanted my cholesterol reduced I had gone vegan for a very short while, about a month and was eating lentils, beans , salads etc and a couple months before that was eating pretty close to vegan, and my cholesterol went down 79 points in that short amount of time. Young people get it. Older people see the world as it was in the past and project that forward.
Interesting that the older doc is more rigid in how he looks at eating healthy and its impact on the environment and the climate. Glad to see you bring up this topic. It is about a healthy diet, respect for animals and nature, the impact on the environment and Climate Change. Young people all around the world are demonstrating and trying to get their voices heard. Older politicians do not recognize the urgency and are slow to act. Entrenched industries dominate the conversation with their advertising dollars and donations to politicians.

I'm a retired pharmacist and our family became vegetarian about 20 years ago. I got tired of dispensing meds for heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes all day long, realizing that many of these disease states are preventable. It's interesting that people seem to believe you can't get the nutrients needed without meat. It's disheartening to watch people basically eat themselves to disease and death. We really need to educate our children and change our eating habits. I always suggest that people begin by adding 2 days a week that are meat free. Slowly increase the number of meat free days. Eating WHOLE foods is the key...Thanks for sharing this information.

I would love to go back to vegan hopefully soon as the weight just dropped off and stayed off and I felt so good. Bonus I could eat huge amounts of food. I miss that. Hi Docs-So my father lived to be 94 and was still very active and generally healthy overall until he fell and broke his hip at 92. He grew up in a large family on a farm and has eaten (IMO) fairly unhealthy his entire life. He loved buttermilk, cornbread, fried chicken wings, hamburgers...you get the picture. He developed high bp at a late age and it was well controlled with 2 meds. I, on the other hand eat very healthy comparatively and I exercise regularly yet I have had BP since I was in my early 20's. I've been on meds since 30, gradually increasing doses and am now (at 52) taking 3 BP medications and still it is a constant battle. I cannot tolerate sodium and have to be very careful of how much and what I eat. Obviously it varies from one person to the next but curious what your thoughts are on this. I feel sure that I would be dead within a year if I followed my dad's diet.

Other than medications, I've been vegetarian my whole life, and then went vegan for a while when dealing with really bad digestive issues when I had to go on an elimination diet. I'm trying a bovine based supplement for a genetic issue, and very slowly working up to the dosage that's suggested because I've had issues with animal products before. I had tried things, but I know fish specifically has made me sick. Navigating digestive issues while trying to get the right amount of protein has been hard, but thankfully I found a great local startup that makes really good plant based protein shakes, and my mom found some good recipes for how to cook tofu in ways that taste really good. It was hard to go off of gluten because we'd cook gluten for protein before and now I get sick even if I have soy sauce that isn't gluten free. It's been a big change, but I'm glad I have a trained dietitian that supports me, and helps me learn more.
My favourite vegan and gluten free protein is lentil pasta. It has a similar texture to wheat, and a lot more protein. I've tried a lot of new things, and found some great products and recipes.

Some diabetics became carnivores and were successful in lowering their blood sugar level to a non-diabetic level. Since I stopped eating oatmeal, rice, bread, and pasta, I have been able to maintain an a1c of lower than 5.7. I would welcome your opinion. I watched Forks Over Knives on July 31st and went whole food plant based the next day. It took my a while to get 100% plant based. I thought I could slowly weed out dairy, eggs, and fish - but then I watched What The Health the following weekend and realized dairy was just as bad as red meat and processed meat.
What I noticed pretty quickly - about 10 days into eating this - the inflammation in my body was drastically reduced, included a reduction in bloating. I FELT thinner even though I had only lost about 8 lbs in 10 days.
I still have a hard time with veggies, but I continue to work on that.

I don’t have to comment, but I’m gonna. What a long strange trip I’ve had as a vegetarian and vegan. Every physician I’ve had tried to talk me out of veganism. I was plant-based for ethical reasons (to feel morally superior, jk) for animal welfare and the environment. As a middle aged woman I’ve added back some animal protein and dairy after a LIFETIME of veganism and vegetarianism. I’ve gained weight in the process but feel more cognitively sharp. Dairy is really bad for me, but butter & cheese, am I right??! I think every body has different nutritional needs. One thing is for certain: the meat processing industry is abhorrent. I think history will look back on those practices as shockingly barbaric. Doctors, you said to give our opinions in the comments. After awhile I learned some fats are essential to maintain a healthy diet or way of living. I am really looking into a AIP. I really don't eat meat but I do eat Buffalo hamburgers and a lean piece of Chicken every week. I have changed what I eat but would really like to stop eating meat. @@TalkingWithDocs of course it's debatable. Meat is way more nutrient dense than plants and the nutrients in meat are way more bioavailable to humans. Have you read Sacred Cow? It is very comprehensive with lots of references. One main problem with plant-based nowadays is a lot of the products are filled with toxic seed oils and refined carbs and sugars - those are the ingredients that are causing modern health problems, not meat which humans have been eating for hundreds of thousands of years with no problem. It makes no sense to blame modern health problems on an ancient food like meat.

I was vegan for yonks and found it socially difficult - my advice would be to go vegan quietly. It freaks lots of people out and they'll avoid you for meals etc. Now I'm vegan at home but more flexible when out. One thing that worried me was a doctor who said women need haem iron and there's no synthetic equivalent. Would he have meant just during womens' reproductive years?? Terrific chat guys. PS I've just eaten the most delicious vegan hot cross bun lol

Hi Alison. Yes no one cares what you eat until you are vegan. Then everyone cares. You can get adequate iron on a vegan diet. You do not need heme iron. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Hi Allison, I was vegan during my last pregnancy and my iron levels were great. My levels were actually better than when I was pregnant and eating meat.

I can’t picture this 78 year old French woman exclaiming, “Bon appétit” over endless plates of kale 🥬 and cauliflower ☁️.🤦🏼‍♀️

I have been doing a lot of reading on veggies. I always thought I could eat lots of fruit instead and I'm finding out (NAFLD was just diagnosed with). So now I'm trying to heal my liver. Looks like alkaline veggies is the way to go (?). Can you please do a video about alkalinity, waters and veggies. Thank you

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 года назад

Hi M. Yes fruits and veggies are very important. Most of the literature doesn’t support trying to eat an alkaline diet as our bodies are so adept at keeping our body pH so tightly regulated that the pH of your food doesn’t really matter. Thanks for watching and subscribing

I need to do this but I honestly wouldn't know what to cook! I am a picky eater and most vegan dishes in cook books don't look good. I seemed to be reduced to salads everyday because the vegan food/dishes taste awful. I tried quite a few in Whole Foods, really expensive and nasty. And most of this vegan packaged food seems to be just as processed as everything else. I need some plant based cooking classes to help me figure out what I like and how to prepare food for taste and health.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

Yes 727. Not processed. Maybe start with veggie fajitas. Then a veggie bowl with quinoa, grilled veggies, some avacado, salsa. Lots of options. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Enjoy your steak @Carl, cut the carbs and “healthy whole grains” since all carbs break down into sugar. Manufactured foods , seed oils and sugars are what’s hardening the arteries and cause inflammation. Plant foods require supplements whole foods do not.
