How to study for USMLE Step 1:
    1. Aim to master the testable material.
    2. Do lots of practice problems.
    3. Learn what you have not mastered.
    4. Review.
    5. Repeat 2 - 5.

    TL;DR
    1) Don't stress, do your own thing.
    2) UWorld
    3) Pathoma
    4) FirstAid
    5) Have fun!

i'm using Lecturio for basics of medicine and I'm very happy with it. I'm not a big fan of textbooks, cause I always study from lecture notes and other online resources so having an organized space, where I had everything for step 1 was definitely something I needed greatly. Highly recommend it to everyone else preparing for USMLE

man, this is what I needed to hear, I've been worrying way too much just to see that I need to ace the material first and then aim for testing myself on it. I'll do the step one this September and I've talked to so many people that have been studying for the step since day one in med school which, want it or not, makes me think that I can't achieve the score I need for what I want, but I guess the most noticeable advice you give in here is making yourself deaf to suggestions cause everybody since they know you'll be taking the exam are trying to tell you what to do.

I'm currently a second year med student (6 year program) and I'm quite happy with Lecturio at this point. I used it during first year as well and it was definitely helpful for med school exams. For studying basics of medicine, I think that's the best resource. I can't say I only use it as a resource though. I also use sketchy micro a lot for bacteriology (so far) and First Aid for the review of modules that I'm going through.

Thank you for this! I'm 7 weeks away from my step 1 and a little more than halfway done with UWORLD but my scores are steady and Ive just been getting so much anxiety and becoming pretty overwhelmed. I'm an IMG and doing the steps back to back. I kept wondering if I should use more resources but you've calmed me down so I'll continue with my strategy. Thanks again and ignore the lame ass trolls. The scrubs are cute.

This professor gave very valuable suggestions. He told to stick with four things.
    (1). First Aid.
    (2). Q Bank.
    (3). Uworld.
    (4). Pathoma.
I think these were his suggestions. If I am wrong I would like people to correct me.

So, I hundred percent believe that studying for Step 1 has made me a better doctor. I have never studied a subject with such dedication (not even during my final med school exams) as when I studied for Step 1. Plus, the questions are integrated across all subjects and they have layers in them. For example, the prompt may start out talking about a infectious disease but once you identify the pathogen, the actual question will ask about a biochemical reaction or the mechanism of the DOC for the pathogen. Having this broad view is so important! I think it is much better than just memorizing information and regurgitating it. So yes, this exam makes you feel the patient is in front of you and you are the only one who can deal with her problem. :)

Do study with First AID, right away. Do Not try to study ahead, you will be lost and its not worth the effort. Do use any QBANK to review for your finals in each course by doing that sections questions. Do not work ahead in the qbank. Once you finish first year or have down time do all of the sections you've already done, again. then do the same thing second year. Then start Uworld +/- any other bank you haven't done + a review course of your choice + FIRST AID + a pathology resource (i didn't like pathoma, would do gouljian if i could redo it.) +/- Practice NBMEs (mine ended up being useless as they under predicted my score by 20- and i even cheated on some of the practice tests). FINALLY: If you start a resource decide early if your gonna ditch it or finish, and if you decide to finish it actually FINISH it. That's all, and everyone should agree that approach will work.

Hey Hammond! Thought I would help you out. It actually depends on how solid your foundation is. First Aid etc are just review books whereas Kaplan is for basic concepts. Take an NBME and see where you stand. If you get below a 200, you probably really need Kaplan. Usually, IMGs require Kaplan because although our infectious diseases curriculum is solid, there is less focus on immunology etc. Check out the videos on my channel for more info. Hope this helps!

Hi....I study MBBS in China and our syllabus is quite different from that of the States....something like we finish Pathology and Pharmacology at the end of our 4th year in med school
so I'm wondering how should I prepare for the usmle or any other board exam
u know it's kinda difficult if you trying to do something away from your syllabus
it seems like a double work and this my situation in making me confused
I need some advice or suggestions please
