  • In the 1550s a peel tower was built on a rocky islet in Castle Semple Loch as a look out tower for Castle Semple. In 1856 an earth bund was built to enclose and drain the area now known as Airds Moss, prior to that the islet was linked to the mainland by an causeway and possibly a crannog of sorts stood on the islet. In 1561 the castle was taken from Lord Semple by the supporters of James VI and 1, led by the Earl of Glencairn. It was damaged by cannon fire and abandoned. Sveral bronze cannon were later found in the loch, possibly placed there to prevent re-use.
