    I was going to comment on how it was an interesting choice to have the workshop saw sounds in the background whilst you were talking - until the video finished and I realised I was just playing a video in the background 🙃Great content (despite my workshop sounds backing track), thanks for sharing!

    Awesome design. How did you get all the saw covers for the various brands?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  2 года назад +2

      I either bought the blade case cover as a spare part, or purchased a 'spares or repair' saw from eBay for no more than £20. Then it's a case of measuring and modelling the covers. There are saws I'm still on the lookout for, and the DeWalt cover needs refining because, worldwide, DeWalt have very poor tollerances in their casting. But it's worked okay. To be honest 95% of all the covers I sell are for Festool TS55 and Makita's corded and battery saws.
      Anyway thanks.

    Hi Karl, good to see you. I’ve missed your videos. I had to check it wasn’t me! I bought your cover for the battery powered Makita plunge saw and wouldn’t be without it now. Fine sawdust is such a health hazard for lung cancer and oak is even carcinogenic. Anything we can do to reduce inhaling it has to be a good investment. Working in a clean workshop is also good. You changed the bag in the shop vac to a clean one and I was expecting a comparison weighing. Keep up the good work.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Hi Christian, I practiced this test a while ago with a view of being quite scientific about it. It's actually pretty hard to measure this stuff on the bench or in the vac. The clean bag relates something I learned in preparing for another video about dust extraction. I just wanted the most airflow and suction I could get. But interestingly 5 cuts results in 11mm of plywood being turned into dust. Anyway thanks for the comment.

      James - yes I do. I see the problem though because it would appear that Makita sell the battery globally under a variety of similar product numbers. I've updated the listing on my website to include yours. Your saw is essentially identical to the DSP600Z or XSP01Z saw - the case is the same part.
      An yes, on my website I have the cover in teal.

    Went out to Thingiverse hoping to find your dust cover and waste side jig there, but couldn't find them? Are these not published?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  2 года назад

      No they're not. In the case of the waste-side jigs the invention and design are registered in the UK and protected under the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act. and the only way you can get a hold of the Original Waste Side Jigs(R) is via my website or via Etsy. I do have plans to release them as downloadable STLs and 3MFs but I'm just waiting for the licences to be approved by my patent lawyer. As for the covers, there are plenty already on thingiverse and having gone to great lengths to create versions from scratch that fit properly and look way better again I'm only offering them as purchased products.
      To be honest, as the creator of an original product/invention Thingiverse is a lawless wild west where everyone feels they have the right to infringe design copyright and the platform (which is not properly supported by MakerBot) doesn't respond promptly to claims; and they don't do an effective job of protecting anything released under creative commons either. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge support of Open Hardware and Open Source and have dozens of designs with CC licences; however I avoid platforms like Thingiverse.

    • @jaspersiegmund
      @jaspersiegmund 2 года назад

      @@StrawbyteWorkshop ah ok, that's a shame. I really like the idea of people coming up with little quite specific things that you can then print yourself and use. It was the original idea of the maker scene imho. But as soon as money becomes involved it all goes to sh*t again unfortunately. I totally get your reasoning but at the same time it's not going to help the scene if all makers out there start hiring copyright lawyers only to ensure that no one is going to be able to copy their designs (which China will ignore anyway). If someone would copy your designs (which needs to happen to begin with) they'd still not have the rep, the youtube channel, the referrals, the webshop. Who cares if they would sell a dozen of their copies anyway. But anyway, too bad, would've been nice to actually use my printer again. Guess I might design them myself then (don't worry, won't post).

    Hi Karl, bought the Makita cordless versions from you as well as the depth stop device and all I can say, is very pleased with both of them. So big thanks for that and thoroughly recommended 👍. Out of interest in the video I notice you have a Axminster Craft 100mm cyclone. Just wondering if you found it any good as looking at one for my CamVac twin motor dust extraction set up. Difficult to get hold of 100 mm cyclones so was happy when saw it on Acministers website for a reasonable price compared to getting one from the US. 😀

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Hi Mark - thanks so much for the feedback. I'm glad you liked the items you bought from me.
      With regards the cyclone - I've had it working on my 100mm CamVac twin motor extractor and my Record Power CX2500 chip extractor and found it to be pretty efficient at removing all but the tiniest amount of dust from my tools. As I've shifted my workshop around a few times in the 6 months I'm still thinking about where to install it permanently and I think it will serve the camvac rather than the chip extractor which only use with the planer/thicknesser. I've no complaints other than you don't get any seals or accessories when you buy just the cyclone. But then the price is pretty favourable and competitive against smaller Dust Commanders (I also have the XL of that).
      I do have a project which I plan to video which will look at it in more detail.

    I recently bought Dewalt (2.2mm) waste side jigs from you and would have loved a nice yellow cover but none on your website I could see! I presumed you had a thing against them 😞

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  2 года назад

      Far from it. The issue I had and am still looking to resolve is that the case on the DeWalt saw has a very inconsistent casting which had made it difficult to make covers that fit properly. Since the item is so close to the blade I can't risk a failure to result in an injury. I'm working on a new design which works better but until then I've temporarily taken them off sale.

  • @christianpetersen1782
    @christianpetersen1782 3 года назад

    Hi again Karl, I’ve just had a thought!! Would it be feasible do you think to make and sell a set of various size covers per saw for the large arcing gap on the other side of the saw say for common saw depths? ie 5mm, 10mm 18m. If the spacer was inserted after the blade depth was adjusted at least part of the gap from the bottom up would be covered. Currently I use masking tape. If you did your own test with and without tape there you could assess the merits. Best wishes.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Christian - the inside of the saw is a curious problem and what you've suggested would probably work. I've watched my video a few times and reflected on what I said. The dust collection was pretty acceptable before hand and better afterwards. I might try with that covered too when I'm out there in the week.

  • @BAHATI1943

    Great idea. Would a small hole or holes in cover make any difference to suction?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      I'm not sure why you'd need a hole, the covers pop on and off with ease. It's the air-flow you're trying to preserve getting as much air from the blade itself. Some of the best covers other people make have small openings to help fit them and I doubt they make much of a difference.
