It’s crazy that the first person you came across literally merged onto the highway at 35mph. We wonder why the traffic is so bad on the highways, and 90% of the problem is improper lane use. “Keep right except to pass” “Well, I’ll pass them eventually so I’ll just stay in the left lane”
Was driving though the main drag of my small town last night. Going 40 in a 35 in the right lane of a two lane one way stretch . Slowly passing a truck that was on my left over the course of a mile or so. By the time I get side-by-side of him, again doing the same speed I had been for miles, he speeds up, flips me off, and then cuts me off into the right lane. Mental illness is a serious issue in the country and it spills over onto the road all the time.
He could be mentally ill, but this is textbook insecurity. A-holes in the “fast” lane in their f150s see the road as theirs and any attempt to pass them as an offense to their “toughness” due to their overall stupidity and fake confidence
Are you kidding? You personally insulted that poor man! You're the problem. You need to go slower than him because HE was in the left lane! You can't pass on the right! Inconceivable!
"I. Must. Stay. In. Front. None. Shall. Pass." is the mentality of a lot of ppl and a wave of self righteousness over takes them. They go slow when you are behind, but then speed up when go to pass...see it all the time. They go from 5 under to 5 over as soon as you move to pass...
This is exactly what Jeremy Clarkson was talking about. If you are good at cooking, you are going to be interested in it, you’ll practice it and you’ll look to improve on it. The same goes for driving. And so, if you aren’t interested in driving, you’ll be poor at it and not even care about improving your skills.
The content discussed in this video is exactly what I have been telling my family and friends. You have to be passionate about driving in order to understand the rules of the road. Unfortunately, the majority of the drivers out there find driving a chore. The future for cars may look bleak because autonomous driving is going to be the future. But I hope that car companies will still cater to the common joe who is an enthusiast.
@@Somethingaweful I am not forcing them to love driving. I am basically telling them that you should be 100% focused behind the wheel. Be mindful of your surroundings. Like what Tedward mentioned… have proper driving etiquette.
@@matt_d7828 Proper driving etiquette doesn't include telling people to go 76 in a 65 mph zone. Pencil d!cks who think speeding and risking lives is the answer to their problem don't need to be giving advice.
Problem is that the less assists you have, the more your insurance will rise.. it's already starting with small things like accident avoidance giving you discounts.
oh enthusiasm wont be allowed. i really dont get you and all these other people thinking that everythings going to be just fine. do you guys enjoy being reduced as people? theyll soon enough take away our ability to drive. and it goes beyond that. but keep wishing because traffic makes you mad.
Whenever I get stuck behind someone sitting in the left lane going 10 mph under the speed limit I am always shocked to see that when I pass them they look so oblivious - they aren't malicously sitting in the left lane they are just totally clueless and that is what is shocking. If only American drivers could learn from other countries (such as Germany and the Autobahn), basic skills such as lane etiquette and passing would be so much better.
There are too many drivers who think the left lane is the “fast lane”. At this point we should just have a separate highway system. One labeled “competent drivers only” and another one labeled “people who think the left lane is the fast lane because that tells us all we need to know about how you drive.”
This. I run into drivers sitting in the left lane as if it were a cruising lane and it just blows my mind that they think it's okay. After learning about lane etiquette and passing from other countries I realized how much safer and more efficient the highway could be if Americans drove properly. It's truly upsetting.
@@endlessglobal8140 its a PASSING lane. meaning you get over to the left, Pass, Get back over to the right cruise, The only travel lane is the RIGHT most lane, Middle lane =PASSING, Left lane = PASSING. Which means..If you are in the right lane and wish to properly pass someone, You get over to the far left to pass someone in the middle lane, You don't pass on the right. That is proper driving educate.
The problem is that people are far too stupid on average for roads to be safe, and I agree self driving cars would be a reasonable solution to make the roads safer. I think if we also tried to figure out a good way to get more people commuting on public transport it would eliminate a lot of those people who would rather be scrolling instagram than following the rules and paying attention to the road
personally I haven't seen many car enthusiasts show a pro public transit stance but that eliminates a lot of the problems relating to cars. from environmental concerns to congestion traffic etc.
Public transportation, as well as, safe operation of a motor vehicle are generally incompatible with US culture….as our culture is defined by selfishness and a low level of community orientation.
@@raiinger5203 I 100% agree, but I just don't see where the money would come from in more rural areas. The US is HUGE, and it would take BIG big bucks to make a public transit system remotely worth using by the average person. I feel like a lot of public transit advocates and gearheads are at each other, but honestly as a car guy getting NPCs off the roads couldn't be more appealing to me
As a 16 year old who's new to the road, my problem is dudes in lifted rams tailgating and honking at me for miles when I'm going the speed limit on twisty backroads. Might just be a NH thing tho
They sound pretty aggressive. You can always find a turnout to pull off on if there’s no passing zones. Better for both of you. I know I don’t like being pressured by people behind me and it’s seen as good etiquette (especially on canyon or mountain roads) to pull over
Also be careful of lifted ram trucks, they are statistically likely to be inebriated (drunk) behind the wheel. That type of vehicle make and model have the highest amount of D.U.I. convictions across the U.S.
Honestly I have felt for a long time that investing in public infrastructure to allow people who don't want to drive a way to get around the country in a safe way (like in a train) rather than clogging up the roads with people who don't know what they are doing. Also living in Virginia they would hate the "no speeding tickets" thing because they love milking drivers dry lol
@@TedwardDrives Honest. I’m 18 right, so my insurance is already insane. I live in VA, and I recently got a ticket for doing 75 in a 65. Obviously I probably shouldn’t have gone that fast, but as someone who loves to drive, I’m not being dangerous/stupid. Essentially there were two cars with older ladies in them driving side by side at 55 mph on this road and I put my foot down. I got tagged just as I had gotten around them and pulled over. My insurance is going to be insane in a month or two and they were being more dangerous than I. I’m fairly sure it’s a statistic that those going 10 under are much more at risk to cause an accident than those going 10 over, at least on highway
Completely right, cars should not be a prerequisite to live and making it such only benefits car manufacturers. I'd much prefer to only use my car when I want to have fun or go somewhere special. I don't want to use it to go to the store to pick up milk and bread or to go to work every day.
I am European and I had 28 hours of driving class before m exam. We did everything from motorway driving to towndriving. He learned me everything about traffic. I already knew how to operate a car thanks to my dad so the driving itself wasn't hard. I am glad for being taught well. Right now I have my license for just more then a year. In this time I have driven throughout Europe and gained lots of excperience, I also did 200km/h on an empty stretch of german autobahn haha. Recently took a drifting course which was amazing as I had never felt a car move like that. In some recent gravel driving I was able to catch a slide from me going a bit fast and underestimating the grip levels. I cought the slide and straightend the car out like I did during the drifitng class. Currently planning on doing laps on a trackday and doing a drivers course. On the road I drive safe but as you said I sometimes bend the rules :) but only when it can be done without endangering others. If you ever have the chance to take a driving lesson in europe lease do, you will learn so much even if you already have your license.
One way to “save” driving…. Is to reconnect drivers to the car. Cars are too numb and too disconnected from the human interface. If everyone had to double clutch, they’d likely pay more attention.
@@raiderfly Even manuals are disconnected from the driver. Triple synchros to ease shifting between strong gear sets. Ultimately, I agree. An orderly society like Germany/Japan is better but there are dash cams of some real winner moves there as well. Humans are dumb and hopeless?
One time while driving, I was on a 55 mph two lane road, and to my disbelief, everyone that was around me was actually staying in the right lane. I almost took a photo I was so stunned. Of course, I didn't because I am a responsible driver (my dashcam caught it though!).
@@JoshCraver9000 yep, individual transport methods will always be privileged, and wanting to have total convenience AND near zero emissions is even more privileged.
Dude, I feel your pain 100,000,000%. I live in Atlanta, Georgia. My morning commute is 6 miles down i85 from my apartment to Midtown Atlanta, 14th st to my office. The amount of people I see that either miss their exits and barrel through at the last minute or the total opposite (not realizing the lane they're in is the FUCKING EXIT) and merge without looking is ASTRONOMICAL. These people would rather whip over and endanger themselves and other people than take that 5 minute detour to another exit and double back. It's not just exits either. Changing lanes every 30 seconds to take the SLIGHTLY faster lane to get to your destination 1 minute quicker is also too high. Atlanta drivers are some of the most selfish drivers I've ever seen on the road. NO one lets people merge. Multiple on-ramps around Atlanta consist of a dual light to turn left, followed by a zipper merge. I've had close calls WAY too many times where these idiot drivers do not realize that if you are BEHIND THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!! They will literally keep driving until they hit you. They just expect YOU just to get out of their fucking way. Sorry for the profanity but idiot drivers make my blood boil lol
I admit I wasn't the most polished driver coming out of driver's ed. But watching enthusiasts like you and looking at education from other countries like the UK(Conquer Driving) really helped me become better and conquer my driving anxiety. You really saved my life bro. America definitely needs to step up to UK levels of education.
Oh it’s ridiculous I totally agree! Nobody near me knows the basic rules. I can’t tell you how many near misses I have to encounter everyday whether it’s illegal passing or not knowing who has right of way at a 4-way stop. It is a battle for survival 😂. My driving test in the southern USA was an absolute joke. I drove down the road from the DMV a few blocks, turned around in a business lot and that was it. I passed… No proper tests whatsoever. Thanks for the video rant!🙂
I've always held the belief that you should have to pass a driver's test every so often to keep your license. Too m,any people have no idea how to drive properly and they should have to pass a competency test to either teach them how to drive correctly, or remove them from the road entirety.
This ^ I was absolutely livid with my drivers test in the USA. I literally drove down the road a few blocks, turned around back to the DMV and they passed me. No tests of environments whatsoever.
Completely agree. As someone that recently renewed my licence I was completely irritated that all it merely involves is going online, confirming some info and paying the fee. At minimum their should be a multiple choice test to go over some simple driving rules people could use a refresher on.
Come to the Netherlands, even though the country isn't made for driving but rather cycling and walking but the driving is so much loved. And the people get a proper drivers test in order to be on the road. I've had my license for 2 years now and I love driving here. Infrastructure is amazing, roads are smooth and potholes are none existing.
Just drove around in the Netherlands, haven't been there for a while but I can confirm you got literally the best roads in EU. However, I find a lot of drivers being a bit too reckless which kept me thinking, is it the weed? :p
This is what I've been telling my friends! After watching your videos/podcasts on cannonball runs, speed doesn't kill. Having good car handling skills or simply predictability on the road is so important! One of my friends who is slightly reckless thought on a rainy day, "oh there's a puddle on that corner, I might hit it faster than usual". He then learned what aquaplaning was! I want to have a drivers course about 3-4 years after getting your license, and instead of assessing parallel parks and seeing if you can indicate properly, they teach you car handling skills and driving at highway speeds, would make the roads so much safer
my dad tried doing this with my sister and I. He took us at an empty lot and just told us to go fast and take fast turns. If the tires weren’t making noise, we weren’t going fast enough. It was all very safe (big empty lot) and we learned from the beginning what a car can do and what it feels like when you’re reaching the limits of grip. Also had us brake as hard as possible to know braking distances. That one little lesson gave me all the confidence needed as a new driver to improve. IMO best thing you can do to teach someone how to drive/handle a car.
Yesterday i took a trip through Germany and the fact I could safely drive past cars on a 2-lane highway at 210 KM/H (130MPH yes, I know my car is slow, it's only a Diesel Ford Mondeo Wagon, but it is a manual so it is reasonably entertaining to drive) was astonishing, you had the confidence that 99% of cars will not pull out in front of you at that speed, and for that 1 percent that would, thanks for modern brakes and tires. So, in Europe, we can do just fine without self-driving cars. But as you said it comes down to education. for example, in The Czech Republic where I am from you need to take 28 hourlong lessons with a qualified instructor plus a 50-question test and a 45-minute test with an instructor and a police officer, (no learners permit here) quite poor by European standards but miles better than you guys. PS: sorry for the long comment
@@bwofficial1776 As my civic duty I have to correct you we are Central Europe not eastern :) The US definitely has more personal freedom in terms of fewer regulations social policies and less taxes. But in terms of political freedom and freedom of press we are better. In the global freedom index the US actually ranks 63 while we rank at 39. Mainly because we elected a new prime minister and the previous one had huge media influence/ownership ( something like Orban in Hungary now). And your rank dropped significantly because of the Trump election anti democratic claims which threatened the democratic foundation of the US. Generally is pretty similar (we are both western countries and together in NATO after all) although you score significantly higher in personal freedom. PS: i my self love the US I only been there once, but I can’t wait to visit again.
So well said, all of it. I'm just like you; A car enthusiast and love driving (actually just ordered this same Integra but in white, upgrading from a 2012 Si). I take driving seriously and pay attention to my surroundings at all times. Thank you for using your voice to get this message out, people need to do better on the roads, whether through education or automation.
Very good points in your video, half of the time it really felt like I could have been talking, rather than listening to you, as I’ve thought about these topics a lot. It’s hard for me to fathom how someone could fail a drivers test in the US. I had a relatively extensive one, apparently (parallel parking, highway, small city, and residential driving), and it wasn’t nearly as rigorous as it should have been.
Love this! I happened to have an excellent driving class when I was in High School, and I learned a lot about the etiquette of driving - especially on the highway! One thing I learned was that keeping an adequate distance between cars on the highway could prevent traffic jams. Then, maybe about 20 years ago, I saw a well-done German study that proved the traffic jam prevention power of just maintaining a one-car length per 10 mph distance between cars. Yet still, every time I'm on I-25 between here and Denver, there are an overwhelming number of tailgating morons who have to slam on their brakes at random moments, causing the cascading slamming on of brakes behind them that instantly causes a traffic jam. I do love to drive, but I won't be sad when self-driving cars take over.
Sounds like Denver. But I'll take that style of driving over what I experience out here in Nashville now. Out here, they change lanes without a blinker and looking, only to swerve back into the previous lane hard after nearly slamming into you as your changing lanes as well. Then you have the ones that run up behind you at 20,30, 40 mph faster than you, get within mere feet of your back bumper, then with no signal, swerve violently into the next lane at the last minute. The last scenerio also happens to be be almost exclusively around the sections of highway near the ghettos.
Some people are just hopelessly bad at driving and should never be given a license. I remember this girl during my high school driving class. One day they brought in a trailer that had a driving sim inside. It had a big projector and you sat inside a real car that had been chopped up so it was just the front seats and console. Basically, as close you could get to driving a real car. Anyway, it’s this girl’s turn to drive and she ends up driving in a literal circle. She starts freaking out and asks how do I go straight (yes, that actually happened), we told her to just turn the wheel the other way. She then proceeded to drive in a circle of the opposite direction. She got flustered and left. This girl didn’t even have the mental aptitude to drive in a straight line. She eventually did get a license. So remember, there’s actual drivers out there that had to be taught how to drive in a straight line.
In my country you learn to drive on a manual and take the driving test on a manual. Watching kids in America on RUclips in insanely fast Tesla's is scary. I've never even driven an automatic much less self driving car and I don't need it.
I’ve talked bout this before, I wonder how many people would not be able to pass and drive properly if we had to learn manual. Driving an automatic is way too easy and most people will have their phone in one hand. I recently bought a manual and it makes driving so much more fun and enjoyable and not boring with a stop and go pedal
My favorite was seeing someone in front of me miss the freeway exit-and STOP in the lane and back up! Great points! I see this frequently as well. Also turn signal use is down- I see lots of lane changes without signals. My favorite is the "oh U need to exit-then swing abruptly across multiple lanes, barely miss my bumper and barely make a controlled exit.
Agree man. I drive all day for work. It's scary. Mandatory driving school is 100% helpful, I took a MSF class for my motorcycle license. And it's taught me a lot.
as a young car enthusiast myself I know that when I'm out learning to drive I most definitely kind of thing back to these kind of videos to try and keep myself in check and make sure I'm doing my best to be a courteous driver so thanks
Thank you for describing how so many of us felt before earning a license and feel about the shear joy of a vehicle becoming an extension of our bodies.
The merging onto the highway weren’t paid actors🤣 My frustration when driving comes from my fear of others and like you said, it’s not about the speed or going fast. It’s the other people that make driving dangerous since they have no clue what they are doing on the road most of the time.
The video started with my pet peeve about on ramps. But the situation I hate most is any time when my best choices for defensive driving end up looking more like "aggressive" driving because of some extremely oblivious drivers.
Def think improvements to public transportation would fix these problems. If you really think about it, a ton of people drive cars not because they love em, but because they need to get to point A to point B and other options simply aren't feasible. By improving the quality of public transpo, you're lessening the roads of the people who dont care nor want to improve their driving skills. Fellow car enthusiasts will rejoice when they find most left on the road are competent and passionate about driving. Would probably reduce the need for self driving cars too. Great vid btw, love the points made.
America does not like big investments. Only incremental and useless spending. Installing major upgrades to Public Transport would solve SO many issues, but the country would never vote for it.
Just today I came across someone completely stopped at the end of a quarter mile on ramp. Not rolling, completely stopped. And there wasnt even traffic.
It’s funny you mention the dangerous cutting across 3 lanes and almost killing everybody when I just rewatched your LFA pov and saw that Tesla do exactly that 😭
wouldn't most of these issues be fixed with a robust public transport system? people who don't want to drive can use trains, buses, metros, etc. and people that want to drive can enjoy more open roads with better drivers
Yeah. This would mainly be useful for cities, since cars are very overcrowded in those areas. Where I live, getting places means going on 80km zones to get to other small cities or towns. That's country life for you. Public transportation there would be useless and very costly. Luckily, a lot of people out there are enthusiasts. You have no idea how many pristine 50s cars I've seen driving down roads in convoys. There's even a house with like 5 Corvettes. Then there's one dude with a sick 70s race muscle car that pops and bangs down the road. Overall some very interesting vehicles out here in southern Ontario. It's a nice change from cities like Kitchener or Cambridge, where I grew up.
You and I are so similar in our thought processes about bad/distracted drivers and how they see driving as a chore. I thought I was the only one who really understood it this way. People look at me like I’m crazy when I rant about how incredibly dangerous the roads are because of these people. I ride motorcycles as well, and in SoCal where lane filtering is legal, the roads are not maintained, and there’s far too many cars and trucks clogging up roads and freeways.
I’m 21 , been driving on the road for a few years now . I honestly don’t remember them teaching us actual lane etiquette , nonetheless vehicles dynamics . Most People are too out of tune with their body to even understand that . That’s why everyone is in a big suv
It's somewhat dependent on location but I also think removing x% of vehicles from high density areas would probably be a net positive. I love cars, like I imagine everyone watching does, but I believe giving folks either a) a self driving option and/or b) a more robust system for non personalized transportation is probably the direction we need to go to make roads safer.
I think a good solution to prevent bad driving in the future is to make it much harder to obtain a license. I think people should also learn on manual cars because it gives you that sense of respect and control over the car and what your doing.
Growing up in north Idaho I had an excellent drivers ed. And that was 15 years ago and I’m still in my 20’s. Granted my dad taught me to drive before I was legally aloud to have a permit. However, I was taught to check my fluids, put on a spare, check components, fill up gas, drive on the highway, in town, and get to drive up and down mountain roads with 3000ft cliffs next to you with little to no guard rails. He deliberately took us up one of the top best enthusiast roads in the US since roads like that are a real life thing if you grew up in the northwest. From anticipation of throttle modulation approaching a hill. When I moved to the Midwest one of the first things I noticed is people don’t know pedal modulation/anticipation when it comes to hills at all. Let alone using a blinker. I give thanks to my drivers Ed teacher despite knowing these things from my dad being a enthusiast himself.
His point at 7:22 is really interesting as when I was 16 I drove a manual z3 and got pretty good at manual, rev matching, heel toe and all, so I thought i was an amazing driver. One of the first times I drove a windy road shortly after it rained I spun into a tree. I was fine but that really humbled me.
I drive in England, first year of driving and the problems you mention seem to be far less here and your dreams are commonplace. The majority of people naturally drive on the left lane on highways and are taught the other two are only for overtaking, and will change to the slower lane asap when they are a fast car coming from a distance :) We also get taught to floor it pretty much before merging onto the Highway ahaha to ensure to keep up with the flow of traffic
I absolutely agree with this video. I feel like driving schools dont do enough to prepare you for highway usage, especially in the city that I live. I'm so used to doing 25 in these city streets that I was terrified when I first got on a highway because of the high speeds. It was through continuous practice on my own with no help that I feel like I can actually drive on the highway, but I do not think that is how it should be. A lot of what I learned about driving on the highway I learned from you and other youtube channels, but a lot of people dont watch these videos and its hard to explain to them how to have proper etiquette on the highway without sounding like Im being condescending.
I agree, i love driving and am an enthusiast. Follow the road rules, but when you see a scumbag not stop completely and take red lights that’s where i get pissed.
You know what America really deserves? It's good public Transit with trains and buses. That would make everything better. Not one single thing would suffer with better public transportation
I think what the US also needs is better public transport. If you don't wanna drive, you should have good options other than driving for your commute. That way, the ones that enjoy it get more of the road to themselves
I'm stuck in traffic everyday and the amount of people swerving or driving extremely slow because they're watching a movie on their phones or texting or even scrolling social media is insane.
The whole "keep right except to pass" thing is so infuriating to me. We have signs every other mile on the highway stating this yet it's like nobody sees them or understands what they mean. The other sign I see is "slower traffic keep right" but I honestly don't like that one anymore as people take it as an offense. Thinking "Well I'm not going slow!"
I love when you say that being passed isn't a challenge. I can't comprehend it, but it's true. In fact, I'm pretty much the exact opposite: I love seeing people in badass cars taking off and having a few seconds of excitement. Some people do seem to get offended, though, and I think it's a combination of viewing the pass as a challenge and being indoctrinated into the cult of speed limits: viewing that arbitrary number as a rational safe speed when that's not even what it's designed to be.
Had a guy yesterday that got offended when I tried to pass him. He was on the left lane of a two lane road going 5mph under the speed limit. Went to the right lane to try and pass him and he accelerated so he is right next to the car in front of me on the right lane. Hate assholes like that. Most dimwitted and self-centered people.
sadly i have to admit that even here in the middle of europe - ppl cant join highway aswell, they too stand on the brake and sometimes go to a dead stop.
@@aron.3320 i dont know, but i see slowing down while merging veeery often. Even driving on the left lane is frequent, although not as much as I see in Ted's video. In US it seems its everyone! :D
Since Covid driving tests have been super easy to do. Even recently I have multiple friends who have passed the test by having an instructor watch them from outside the vehicle in a phone call and a parent in the passenger seat. All they have to do is go around a small parking lot and park facing forward. That’s literally it.
Thank you so much for putting these in a collected manner like this, I love driving and I hate how many drivers have absolutely no respect for the rules. You're manoeuvring a large vehicle, you need to be mindful of the damage a car moving even rather slowly can do to a person. I was literally crossing the street in Cambridge yesterday, had the right of way with a pedestrian walk signal on, other people walking next to me and an old woman in her SUV, on her phone, COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS to the fact she's cutting a red to take a right hand turn, bumped the woman to my side and took off without ever noticing. Luckily no one was hurt but you see this crap on a daily basis. Bad drivers with increasingly large vehicles. So frustrating
So I learned to drive late in my life, that is last year at 32. And I wouldn't let go until I had hundreds of hours of practice to at least somewhat confidently maneuver in tight spaces, parallel park with confidence and master steering control at different speeds, use wing mirrors to judge car distance from curb while in reverse, etc. I don't get how people can qualify to be road-safe drivers in just 10 or so hours of training that most driving schools give lessons for and then send the students off for their drive test.
I love driving. I haven't had an accident in 26 years. I'm not a great driver but drive defensively continuously. During that time I would have been in 100's of accidents because of the idiots around me. One of the biggest reasons?. I PULL ASIDE or OUT OF THE WAY ASAP when the person close behind me is looking down (Looking at their phone-not the road). It's much easier than getting mad or having a wreck because of an idiot.
My strategy when I see someone taking an on-ramp at 30mph is to slow down to 15mph for the first third of the on-ramp, to build a gap, so I can then accelerate and safely jump into the highway at 60mph. Also if that person doing 30mph causes a pile-up by cutting off a vehicle, I have more room to avoid becoming part of the pile-up. I wish on ramps had big "accelerate to highway speeds before merging" signs as a large portion of drivers don't seem to think this is a thing.
I think part of the problem is that in some locations there is no valid option to owning a car. So all the people who don't want to drive or care about driving don't have any other options. Train, bus, subway etc . If there were other options to get around that are actually good and possibly even faster than driving, then people would use that and there would be fewer cars of the road.
This is all stuff I think about daily lol. It makes it hard to be someone who follows the rules of the road properly when it doesn’t mesh well with those who don’t. I drive a lot of miles per day and I also drive a truck for a living so I see so many bad drivers and it drives me nuts
One of the first things I did when I got my license was going karting. For only $50, I got to feel out limits for myself and get SOME form of dynamic training risk-free.
I have always enjoyed driving, been doing it with a license since 16, and I will always be amazed at how little you actually learn from the test. 5 days in a classroom, 4 on the road. Most people look at driving as "just another thing" without actually giving it the attention it requires. It's absolutely a shame that whenever a new driver hits the road you need to always give them the advice that it's not yourself that you need to be wary of, but the others on the road. It's really not a chore to drive and it requires such little effort so long as you dedicate enough concentration when doing so. Automating away the skill of driving I feel wouldn't do much to dampen reckless drivers but rather dumb us down even more than we already are.
I had to drive a 2022 Honda Pilot for a couple days a little while back, as well as various new cars due to my field of work, and I realized something. All of the “partial self driving” features and safety features mandated by federal automotive regulations- like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, radar automatic adjustable cruise control, etc- is making it increasingly easier to not pay attention to or care about driving.
Being a driver in the Balkans(Europe), in a relatively poor country, I am used to taking my foot off the brakes when I see someone behind me who wants to overtake me. I stick to the right and make way for the person going faster than me. They usually signal back with their hazards as a way to thank me for making way for them. This is the norm here. Everyone drives in a way that does not bother the other drivers on the road. What they teach us here in driving schools is how to cooperate with the other people on the road and use our signals properly. If this all is possible in a slavic third world country where people tend to be pretty crazy at times, it can happen everywhere else too.
It feels good to not feel alone in this some people and there actions baffle me. I really love the way the interior on this car is. Keep up the good videos!!
I took a driver's Ed class with my school when I first got my permit. I've been taught the American norm, pass in left, cruise in either. We didn't learn to stay in the right lane until you pass in the middle then pass in the left.
Recently had this argument with a friend no less. He himself couldn't fathom a modern car driven by a competent driver at a higher speed than mandated can even be safe. He also didn't think everyone is as bad at driving as they clearly are due to all the reasons you also listed here.. I told him he shouldn't try driving fast but also shouldn't argue about it because he was so clearly out of his depth. I too experience the same dangerous driving on the road every friggin day. Nobody uses their mirrors, people brake for shallow bends going slower in the dry than their cars could easily and safely handle in the wet. Unpredictable driving as you put it indeed is what happens when nobody understands the physics of driving and they don't even have an inkling of situational awareness.
Thanks for speaking what’s been on my mind for so long. It’s aggravating when you live with one of these “bad drivers.” For me, it’s my wife. She isn’t a terrible driver by most standards, but she misses some of these things and is generally a complacent driver. I try to point out certain things but she doesn’t believe she needs to improve, so she doesn’t give my concerns any consideration. I think most people are like she is, unfortunately
I remember when I began driving school I went in with little to no knowledge of driving and assumed that since it’s such an important factor of life that wouldn’t matter, I pretty much aced all the writing portions but once I got to the driving part I realized how much that rlly didn’t matter. I liked the fact that they kinda made you go balls to the wall by immediately letting you out on the road, but I could tell that they expected their students to have driven a car before and also expected you to conform to their way of driving(which there were multiple instructors) instead of giving a more general way to drive. They weren’t really there to teach how to drive, they were more there to see if you were able to drive at a minimum level, I would never get answers to my question other than “well those are the rules” and it caused me to rlly dislike driving and I don’t do it very often, I’m still young but I wish it was different
My biggest pet peeve is people blocking the pass lane. Just yesterday, I ran into one of the biggest jackasses. He was going 5 miles under on the pass lane of a two lane road. Tried passing him when there was a window to do so and he speeds up only at that moment so he could be side by side with the other car on the right lane that is in front of me. Morons like him cause so much traffic and angry/unpredictable drivers. I can’t imagine the psychology behind idiots like him. Oh that person wants to pass me because I’m going too slow? Better block him! I don’t give a rats ass if you want to drive slow, just do it on the right lane and give way to those who don’t want to drive at your speed.
100% agree with all of this! 2 common problems I see on the roads around me: 1) Drivers driving at inappropriate speeds (fast or slow), and 2) Drivers not knowing the limits of their cars (i.e. understeer in a FWD car, oversteer in a RWD car, limits of their brakes, etc.).
I think racing sims setups with monitor/ VR, pedals, wheels, etc in driving school or high school would help people, although its not real life practice they can learn and get to comfortable with it so they wouldn't be as nervous or anxious. It could have a game/program that would be close to real life driving and can engage them in difficult situations later on in lessons such as a person brake checking, merging on the highway/freeway, etc, mainly using it as learning tool. As well it's funny seeing people treat a blinking yellow lights as a stop sign and then going XD
It’s crazy that the first person you came across literally merged onto the highway at 35mph. We wonder why the traffic is so bad on the highways, and 90% of the problem is improper lane use.
“Keep right except to pass”
“Well, I’ll pass them eventually so I’ll just stay in the left lane”

That's a great point.

Same. And I got points taken off my test result for going literally 32mph (speed limit was 30). Smh.
ROFL!!!
@@RockinTheDub It's the passing lane it literally says slower traffic keep right every mile by me

My driving test in the southern USA was an absolute joke. I drove down the road from the DMV a few blocks, turned around in a business lot and that was it. I passed… No proper tests whatsoever. Thanks for the video rant!🙂
I've always held the belief that you should have to pass a driver's test every so often to keep your license. Too m,any people have no idea how to drive properly and they should have to pass a competency test to either teach them how to drive correctly, or remove them from the road entirety.
I don’t understand why this hasn’t been implemented. Would weed out a decent amount of collisions and overall traffic where unnecessary.
This ^ I was absolutely livid with my drivers test in the USA. I literally drove down the road a few blocks, turned around back to the DMV and they passed me. No tests of environments whatsoever.
Great, so now I get to go to the DMV again and have even LONGER wait times for all the people taking a driver test.
A week ago I bought one of these with a manual flew to Pennsylvania and drove it 1000 miles back to Minnesota. Your channel motivated me to do this.
That is awesome! Congrats!!

I'm so with you, man!!! Preach it! 👍

Preach, brother! I hear your message.
200 % agree with you. People can’t drive and no driving culture. Some idiots slowing down if no place to pass or accelerate while you are passing.
wouldn't most of these issues be fixed with a robust public transport system? people who don't want to drive can use trains, buses, metros, etc. and people that want to drive can enjoy more open roads with better drivers
I love your talks like these
I drive in England, first year of driving and the problems you mention seem to be far less here and your dreams are commonplace. The majority of people naturally drive on the left lane on highways and are taught the other two are only for overtaking, and will change to the slower lane asap when they are a fast car coming from a distance :)
We also get taught to floor it pretty much before merging onto the Highway ahaha to ensure to keep up with the flow of traffic
Im glad to share the same respect for driving as you tedward. Coming from a 22 si owner. Also the sound from that integra is just amazing.
Need more of these videos and left lane hogs videos
I agree, i love driving and am an enthusiast.
Follow the road rules, but when you see a scumbag not stop completely and take red lights that’s where i get pissed.
You know what America really deserves? It's good public Transit with trains and buses. That would make everything better. Not one single thing would suffer with better public transportation
Yep, I'm a car enthusiast that hates car dependent infrastructure. The roads are clogged up with idiots.
@@wackywildpotato1410 exactly
I think what the US also needs is better public transport. If you don't wanna drive, you should have good options other than driving for your commute. That way, the ones that enjoy it get more of the road to themselves
Why America needs better public and national transit so the road can be clear for real drivers
Talking about the Acura integra, I have a 2002 Acura Rsx ❤😂
I'm stuck in traffic everyday and the amount of people swerving or driving extremely slow because they're watching a movie on their phones or texting or even scrolling social media is insane.
The whole "keep right except to pass" thing is so infuriating to me. We have signs every other mile on the highway stating this yet it's like nobody sees them or understands what they mean. The other sign I see is "slower traffic keep right" but I honestly don't like that one anymore as people take it as an offense. Thinking "Well I'm not going slow!"
Thank you, finally someone is talking about how flawed the drivers ed system is
Self driving/ autonomous will be law in the pool/ ez pass lanes in the future
Most dimwitted and self-centered people.
sadly i have to admit that even here in the middle of europe - ppl cant join highway aswell, they too stand on the brake and sometimes go to a dead stop.
but is it as bad as in the US? i think here in europe we have better education to learn driving which means better drivers overall
@@aron.3320 i dont know, but i see slowing down while merging veeery often. Even driving on the left lane is frequent, although not as much as I see in Ted's video. In US it seems its everyone! :D
The complete lack of awareness that there are others out there is what drives me absolutely insane. And it isn't just with driving.
I agree with everything that tedward has said in this video, thank you tedward!
You are absolutely right about everything. Also, I CAN'T STAND it when people brake or drive 25 mph at the end of a freeway on ramp.
I didn’t even spend 5 minutes on the highway in driving school. Got on at one exit and off at the next. That was it.
In NY many on-ramps are literally 50 feet in length making merging at highway speeds nearly impossible
An indictment of respect levels and the public education system.
I test drove one of these and you are absolutely correct, it’s a very fun car for what it is. Considering getting one for my next vehicle.
You made A LOT of solid points in this video. 🔥
One of the first things I did when I got my license was going karting. For only $50, I got to feel out limits for myself and get SOME form of dynamic training risk-free.
My gf always wonders why I get so upset when I’m driving and this is why!
1000% agree.. sad but true.
Here in southern California we don't even have to go on the highway to pass the drivers test even though the highway is required to go anywhere here
This is wild right!? Completely irresponsible to throw someone into a California freeway without training
They'd probably be better drivers than the actual drivers where I live
Great thoughts. I love driving and I love watchin' Your reviews. Great review! Again! Congratulations and big greetings to You from sunny Croatia! 👍
