Well done. I never got on with Napa cabs - expensive, alcoholic fruit juice and often over-oaked - but I last drank it more than 30 years ago, so I am sure they have changed. Love Mas de D. but 2020? Infanticide! Not tried that for a while, either, so it may have 'Modernised.' You have galvanised me into action - I will try to find a bottle with some age at a reasonable price, if I can.
Hahahah, I hope you track down a bottle. Yes it is too young but I wanted to compare the same vintages. I am not a huge Napa fan but they are dialing back in recent years. I have a Grand Cru Bordeaux vs California Cab blind tasting video coming up that you might like!
@@drmatthewhorkey only one winner there.
Happy birthday!
Also your videos have motivated me to do WSET level 1 and after all the RUclips content it doesn't even look that complicated so far. So thanks for all the videos.
Good luck on your journey. I bet you will pass it very easily
You won’t regret it. I just finished my resit for level three and it was hard. WSET doesn’t require you to take level 1, you can skip to level 2. In my case, I knew nothing about wine so I had to take level 1.
I like this! Would be happy to see more FACE-OFF videos!
More to come 😛
Really enjoy a face off, keep them coming 👍🏻
More to come!
I drank two bottles of Caymus, same vintage, a 1990 or so. The first showed potential, but had some harshness in the tannins. I stashed the second for 3.5 years, and it was a memorable wine, with depth, richness, but still a delicious drinkability. It was the best 20 dollars I've ever spent. Yep, that's what it cost back then. Speaking of which, I also drank a Chateaux Lafitte that I paid 27 for. Give me a time machine, I need to go shopping!
27 bucks for a Lafite!!!!!! Those are days of legend 😂🤣
@@drmatthewhorkey Yeah, it's just getting old. Which reminds me; the first bottle of wine I ever bought was in july 1967. I was living in NY, the legal age was 18 then. And my first purchase was a Puligny-Montrachet. I gave him a ten, and got change.
I'm jealousssss
Great video hope you had a great birthday, happy 40th🥳 love the face off series 2nd favorite to only underrated & overrated.
Ahhahah thanks on all three. Perhaps this winter I’ll revive the Overrated Underrated series
Are you trying to get us Pinot fans to change sides and become Cab Sauv fans?No chance! Nice video, thanks Matthew!!
Tanti auguri per il tuo compleanno mate!
You’ll see a few featuring Greek wines very soon 😉
Love the face off series.
🙏
I thought that left one should be Caymus because of the color it has haha very interesting tasting indeed. looking forward to seeing more face off videos. 😀 Thanks and happy b day to you!
Thanks a lot! A new one drops tomorrow
Happy belated birthday Matt! On my 40th my younger brother opened the 1959 Lafite at my party. Yeah, it was over 30 years ago though....
Hey hey… a little early for my bday hahaha but that is one helluva bday wine!
Very timely for me, since I've finally decided to explore Cab. Sauv. Since I'm determined not to get in to cellaring wines, I think it's going to be a bit more of a challenge for me. I suspect I'm going to remain a GSM and Pinot Noir drinker, but I have to give cab a try. (You talked me out of trying either of these!)
Even the Daumas Gassac?????
@@drmatthewhorkey From the comments I gathered it would be better if aged a few years. Also, it looks like something that would be hard to find locally.
Could happen. I have seen something similar in blind tastings before. Even from top tasters.
GSM are amazing, I especially love syrah. I still like to Cellar my syrahs, but obviously not as long as Bordeaux.
Putting your "wine card" on the line! GG
Hahahahaha that’s right!
I always keep a few bottles of Caymus around for some of my guest. They love it and it saves me from opening a bottle of Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux which they would not fully appreciate.
Ahhhh now that’s a good strategy!
Yes, always have wine for the heathens 😅
Happy birthday Matthew 🥳
Not much experience with Napa cabernet to be honest, and this video is another reason why I intend to keep it that way.
I assume it's like primitivo Vs zinfandel ( more experience with those, budget...). I've had some good US zinfandels, but I'm not big a fan of those super oaky ones.
I want to do a Zin episode like this. I poo poo on Napa Cabs a lot as a whole but honestly, some of the greatest red wines I have ever tasted have been Napa Cabs… How ironic is that!?
@@drmatthewhorkey life's all about contradictions. That's what makes it fun, no? 😉
Totally recognisable btw. I don't consider myself a big bordeau drinker. Guess what you can find the most in my cellar 😂
Can't wait for that zin episode btw
Of all the people I’d like to do a Face Off video with, you’re right up there!
Happy birthday ! I loved Caymus in the past. But slowly but surely my palate leaned to freshness and less sweet. Still , the caymus special selection , one above of this one , is a great great wine that is made for cellaring .
No shame! Caymus is easy for a lot of people to understand when young.
Ive never tried Caymus...the big oaky style cabernets are not for me, so don't really have a strong desire to give it a try from what Ive read/heard.
I have a bottle of 2018 Mas de Daumas Gassac in my cellar that I got when visiting the Languedoc. When I tasted it earlier this year I loved it and already found it quite approachable. I really want to pop it open but patiently waiting for a few more years to see what it evolves to.
I had the 2018 in the Fall, it needs some more time on it to really blossom IMO.
I love big oaky cabernets. I once bought a half-bottle of Caymus and was very excited to try it. On the nose I was worried, it smelled like fake, candys, on the nose I thought "oh fxxx! just like that vomitous meoimi thing.". On the palate - it was worse. It tasted manufactured. I couldn't finish the glass. It made me queasy. Reminds me of trying Durian fruit ice cream. It's not often for me to think "vomit". I dont get it - I love big red wines - Shafer's Hillside Select, Henschke's Mount Edelstone , Mollydooker's Carnival of Love. I also love cheap, well-made big reds - Juan Gils Monastrell ($11.99). But Caymus - I cant abide it. Why do so many people love it?
It’s easy to like bc it’s candied and oaky… that Hillside Select, now that’s a different story!!!
@@drmatthewhorkey I assumed that if some people who like big, heavily extracted wines like those I mentioned, also like Caymus then I would like it too. I was surprised to dislike it so strongly. I guess that palates are personal
First of all , happy birthday.
Secondly , dont mind if i make a suggestion for a face off.
A Napa valley furmint and a Hungarian furmint. :D
Thanks Hahah, I did hear that someone is doing Furmint in Napa... If it's anyone, I would guess it's Steven Matthiasson.
@@drmatthewhorkey I got the idea of suggesting it , after getting a closer look on a bottle of kapcsándy furmint, and seeing it is from napa.
At first , i was quite surprised after taking a closer look on the label.
Congratz on your birthday !!!
Thanks :)
Happy Birthday 😇 And I’ve been wary of Cali Cab but easing back in with Washington 👍🏻🙏🏻 A little more herbs. Actually Le Vigne Paso Robles Cab has a bunch of herbaciousness.
Ohh I haven't had that Paso one before.
You should drink Mas Daumas Gassac after at least 10 years. I made a vertical and before 10 years it was too oaky, strong...
Nicceee, good call. What was your favorite vintage? I tasted the 2020 from barrel and was surprised how it was showing from bottle. I also recently did a vertical at the estate too: ruclips.net/video/dT5MJAVDYxY/видео.html
@@drmatthewhorkey It was 'jong' wines (2018 to 2011) except the 2004. And the 2004 showed very well in comparaison to the others. I also prefer mature wines (Bordeaux of the eighties). Every wine lover should try a good Bordeaux of 1990 to determine if he/she loves old wines.
I wasn’t impressed with the 2020 caymus cab but I got a mag anyway. Its priced well 🎉
I don’t like the wine either but if you do, all good
happy birthday Mathew!
Thanks
When I was 40 in my mind the best wine was Caymus or Silver oak. I went to Napa trip and visited Caymus and Silver oak… I didn’t know better… haha
We all live and learn ahhaha altho Silver Oak’s Napa Cab does taste decent with ten years of age on it.
@@drmatthewhorkey when you come to my house i have bought library wines from them 1990-2018
I'm with you on the Caymus. Seems like the same people who drink Rombauer chardonnay also drink Caymus.
Yes but that’s their perogative. It’s just not for me.
@@drmatthewhorkey True. All good. Not for me either, but to each their own.
When people start to really own their palates, it’s amazing how different people want drastically different things in wine.
France is KING. Half of the country is literally vineyards. There are small producer families who have been there for 400 years. They keep all of their rules and traditions. This, along with soil and climate equals superior wines. Even the lesser known regions produce superior wines (Languedoc) and people still know very little about these quality wines. The price point ratio is ridiculous compared to overpriced Napa wines. The white wines of France are so overlooked it's criminal (I hope you do more shows on French whites). I am glad that there are channels like this, that are educational... Thank You...
I love French whites and there’s plenty of vids on the channel about them :)
Great video. I have tasted mas de daumas gassac many times. Great wine. But i couldnt belleive the price! . I bougt some at the domaine for around 20$!. It was quite a while back though. I think around 92. The caymus i have never tasted.
At the winery now it's about 30-35 Euros but overseas it's a heckuva lo more. Thanks for watching again.
I just checked the price where i live. Its around the same as with you. And i saw at a shop that they make several other wines now. I dont think they did then. Also i dont know if the wine has changed. Its quite a while since i last tasted it. But at that time i really liked it a lot. It was actually one of the first wines from Languedoc region that was considerrd at high quality. Thats has changed a lot. I have tasted awesome wines from Languedoc region.
They have a negociant range of cheaper wines where they buy grapes
Austin Hope Cabernet from Paso Robles will stand with them both and win for a lot of people.
A lot of people do like that wine
For all that complexity on the nose you picked up on the Caymus, I would think it is delivering quite a bit of VFM out of the Napa Valley. The oak will integrate with time.
A lot of people love it. For me, the palate is way too rich, candied, and oaky. I released a short today on how it tasted after some time with air...
Score one for France! :)
😂🤣
Thank God you got that right or I would have to unsubscribe! lol
🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
i am a caymus guy :) my french wines cost way more than the 180 i pay for caymus... and while maybe better... maybe... i always come back to caymus. I just drank my last bottle of 1982 Lafite.... was wonderful, but I should have sold it!!
It's all good, I know a lot of people like it! Ohhhh an 82' Lafite!!
Mega purple cay cay…cay Caymus.
😂
@@drmatthewhorkey Imagine a college football chant.
hahahahahhahahaha that just cracked me up
Caseeees
😬
I think any wine noob could tell the difference. Caymus (which I don't hate) is REALLY sweet for a cab. slightly off-putting in comparison to other cabs even from Napa. I'll still drink it though.
A lot of people like it
@@drmatthewhorkey I do as well, but not for the price.
Napa has amazing wines, no doubt about it. But for me that is nothing worst than good wine overoaked. And Napa is a master in overoaking wines!
Hahahahhaha well said. I was at a tasting once and one producer was pouring wines to my European wine writer friend. The producer asked my friend what he thought. My friend said one line, “well you guys like your oak… 🤣”
I'll just stick with Pinot Noir, thanks. Cab is very likely to give me a headache.
Good thing the workd of wine is so diverse
@@drmatthewhorkey true! 👍
French wine is always immediately identifiable by its drab color and accompanying taste.
Drab?
@@drmatthewhorkey with pretentious words like “terroir”, meaning “old world dirt flavor” 🤣
😅😅😅 pretentious? I love French wine for the pretentious terroir, better than fruit juice from napa 😆
C'mon, what knowledgeable wine drinker is ever going to mistake an old-world cab blend for Caymus? The only way the face off could have been easier was if it was between a red and white wine.
😀😂😅 I've been fooled before in blind tastings with worse!
Caymus isn’t overly oaked. That’s why it’s popular. A lot of California Napa cabs are way overly oaked let’s be honest.
Ahhh all palates are different, for me Caymus is too oaky
@@drmatthewhorkey You are right about palates being different. Maybe the creaminess of Caymus kinda blunts the oak? It’s one of the few cabs my wife likes cause she can’t stand the Pichon Lalande I bought a case of because of the oakiness which I think is in check.
The creaminess and vanilla flavors come from the heavy use of wood. A lot of people do like that flavor. I’m guessing your wife maybe didn’t like the tannins (astringent) feeling in the mouth with the Bordeaux.
Any thing is better then Caymus
Lol
caymus = 💩
😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
