I remember this being the first Godzilla game I could play. It holds a special place in my heart. When I was younger, I didn't care about the bad controls, I only cared about playing Godzilla! I remember learning the controls and having fun! It's nostalgic for me.

This is what I am trying to say, all my favorite characters were in this game! It was the first game I had, and the controls never seemed to bother me. Moreover, it has so many fan favorite characters, and with enough Finess, the controls don’t become that bad. I get the bad graphics and his reasoning for 3 stars, as the nostalgia Carries this game. I would play for hours on end with my brother and friends until our wii remotes ran out of battery. And, now that I have Save the earth on my ps2, I long to play unleashed again, and relive all the fond memories I had with it.

Great review as always and you can definitely feel the bias on this one lol. I’m a lot more nostalgic towards it as a Wii kid, I especially remember searching for years before I could finally get my hands in this game. I do think Godzilla Unleashed has the best Soundtrack, Roster, Customization, and Arenas in the trilogy. The controls hold it back but u get used to him after a while, and Unleashed will always hold a special place in my heart

This game will always fill me with nostalgia. I remember how this was the last main line Godzilla game until the PS3/PS4 game.
Also if you want to have nightmares for the next few weeks, here's a fun glitch in this game; as Anguirus, use your rolling attack and run through several buildings at once. The model gets fucked up like some creepy voodoo doll.

I never actually had problems with the controls and I even taught 5 year olds how to use them.
But the controls are very unconventional. Designer Simon Strange even noted that people who weren’t as experienced with games had an easier time grasping the controls than a hardcore gamer who’s used to a conventional controller.
I love this game. Definitely my favorite Godzilla game for the sheer roster size, more intricate campaign, lots of customizable options, etc. Once you get past the controls, there’s a lot to offer.

Growing up in the UK in the early 2000's when it was a lot harder to find Godzilla movies that weren't region locked DVDs, this game meant a lot to me. It was the only Godzilla game I had and it introduced me to so many of the monsters and generally was one of the video games I played the most growing up. It was funny playing this on the Wii because for a while it reframed my idea of how Godzilla's universe operated, I assumed Space Godzilla was the arch enemy of Godzilla rather than King Ghidorah. I do vaguely remember the controls sucking, a lot of the time the atomic breath for me was just shooting into the air, then again I was a dumb kid lacking the patience to learn controls, but all that being said playing this with my brother was a fun experience since it made playing as the monsters feel like a challenge, neither one of us had a clear advantage and there was a learning curve to it, which I think is what kept me coming back to play it over and over.

I remember being so hyped for this game. When I finally got the game and played it on Christmas of 2007, it was not quite the same as the previous games in the trilogy, but I still enjoyed it while playing as the characters that were absent in the predecessors. It really helped when I got the Wii in September of that year to help me get used to a new gaming system with other games like TMNT. Also, 7:48 Be still my beating ribcage!😍

We had a Wii back then, and I asked for this game for Christmas- my wife searched 3 or 4 game stores, and finally a local GameStop got a used one in stock, which they held for her. I didn't care that I got a used disc, I loved the game (I was about 35 at the time). It was a hit with non-Godzilla fans, too, as anybody who played with the Wii would gravitate to this game. I made the mistake of loaning it to my friend back in 2010, I think his kids are still playing with my copy.

The story is a very solid setup that I think just needed to be presented more dynamically for more people to get on board. Though I personally don’t mind the cutscenes as they are and wish they would stop being the low hanging fruit of criticisms people reach for when talking about this games flaws

    • @justzillathekingofgames6867
      @justzillathekingofgames6867 Год назад +2

@Cdr2002 Yeah, I agree. I really like the story. The cutscenes weren't that bad. At least we got cut scenes that actually showcased how and what the humans are doing to combat the crystal threat. Plus, we got the VA for Spy from TF2 to be admiral Gozen.
This story was in my opinion, very dope. SpaceGodzilla was getting his revenge against Godzilla and the earth. Gozen wants smoke with Godzilla for losing past battles against him. Miku believes in the earth defenders. He'll even the Vortaak queen gets a spotlight and shows more character development if only a little.
The critical mass designs for the monsters are fucking sick. Plus you can get most of the powersurge crystals and become a Tyrant. A being so powerful that all other factions have to band together to stop you. That's a pretty alternative ending tbh.

    • @Cdr2002

@@justzillathekingofgames6867 it’s the kind of big scale story a SpaceGodzilla fan would want out of the character given what a threat he is on paper, Gozen is a perfect character for a Godzilla story and Miku adds a solid perfect human counterpoint to him, and the Vortaak being finally defeated adds some finality to at all. I definitely have to agree with you that the story is much stronger than it gets credit for simply because the cutscenes aren’t presented very dynamically

I've played this game so much both in my off time and for SuperGodzillaGaming, I pretty much know the game in and out, though it's been a while since I've last played it. Knowing every nook and cranny... It's rough. As you said, very unpolished and unresponsive. Hitboxes are extremely wonky, and certain inputs are just outright useless. AIs tend to enter beam locks when you use your beams 9 times out of 10 (though it's good strategic use of engaging in beam battles, especially when you're able to knock off an entire health cell). I still have fond memories of the game and am mildly forgiving of it as a Godzilla fan. It's still a half-baked fighter that leaves a lot to be desired.
And on the story mode front--conceptually a really fun idea that only ever affects things more on a mechanical gameplay level (i.e. the faction with the most trust points don't attack you / team up with you) than a narrative one. Sure, there are critical "point of no return" decisions that change the narrative (like collecting all the Power Surges). But what I find most disappointing is that playing an Alien Faction monster as an Earth Defender doesn't grant you a special Earth Defender ending--it just goes to the Alien one. You're locked to your faction's ending regardless of what you do (save for Power Surges). It's a darn shame, because I think that would've helped give a much greater incentive to actually explore all the venues and options that the story mode could've had. It leaves the story mode as very superficial without any real meat to it.
And apparently, the voice of Vorticia in GU is Ellen McLaine, most famous as GLaDOS (at least according to IMBD). Same for Dennis Bateman as General Gyozen (the Gotengo dude), known for Pyro and Spy in TF2. Though I find it bizarre that, in all the credits, there's no recognition for the voice cast of GU.

I can understand the controls ruining the game for you, but because this was my first Godzilla game and the Wii was the system I was accustomed to, I was able to enjoy it as like as the controller itself worked the way it was supposed to. This was my first Godzilla game, one of my favorite childhood games, and was part of what kept my interest in the franchise until I went back to being a super-fan at the age of ten! This game will always hold a special place in my heart as my personal favorite Godzilla video game!

  • @RadRaptor152
    @RadRaptor152 Год назад +2

Compared to the PlayStation 4 Godzilla game, I prefer the more quick-paced fighting from this game compared to the slow and sluggish movements in the PS4 game
I played it this game on the Wii and I will admit the controls are a little difficult especially controlling your beam attack, and I really like that you can have anime style laser clashes and you can even throw buildings at each other.
However for me the story mode with kind of confusing because as you said each class of Monsters has their own specific goal when it comes to story mode. I mean 41 the only tutorial you get is the one you get when you decide to play as Godzilla or any of the other Earth Defender monsters, and secondly the game doesn't really tell you what your goal is as each monster class.
Not to mention the giant ability crystals in this game. You fight a giant monster being controlled by crystals and if you choose to defeat the monster rather than destroy the crystals controlling it you get the power of those crystals, but unless you read the game guide inside the game case, you don't really know what each power you obtained from the crystals does, not to mention that you have to use the powers you gain in the exact order of the crystals you encountered. There's no way to choose which one you want to use
Overall I would give this game 3.5 out of five stars

I've been waiting for this one as this is the first Godzilla game I ever played! And just like alot of others here, it holds a special place in my heart for that. Yeah, the controls aren't the best, but I didn't care about that as a kid, I had so much fun just playing the game as all of these different monsters, making them fight each other in big brawls with my own custom rules. Along with playing the game's story mode alot, it was just something I couldn't get enough of as a kid! And honestly, it just hurts to see it be the last in the trilogy and in general in terms of mainline Godzilla games till the ps3/ps4 game. Though I will say that your comment on it being halfbaked is actually true, the game was rushed in development, and there are some bugs n glitches in the game that you can do. Some of them even freeze the wii itself lol. (I think, idk. Maybe my wii freezing up as I flew around Seattle as Rodan was more of a result of me playing for hours on end that night.) But yeah, if you grew up with a wii like I did, this is a game you'll love as a young Godzilla fan, the countless matchups you could do are endless, so many dream matches a kid would want just right at your fingertips!

I know the controls are a mess. But as someone that played this a lot as a teen, I think the story is genuinely just on the precipice of being really great. A story where you can build relationships on rivalries with various Kaiju and factions sounds just great and has so much potential for individual stories.

I grew up on this game, and I have to say that it is not as bad as he is making it out to be. I hate out every person who talks about motion controls in Wii games, saying that they are so impossible and hard to use but when I played this I was able to execute a lot of the moves very solidly and I hardly ever found myself stuck or unable to control my character. I know I can’t really say much since I never really played the other games in this series but I think that this game was far better than people give it credit, and I think that the controls were all around it way better than what people say they are.

I don't mind that you didn't mention the PS2 version of Unleashed as technically it's just Save The Earth but with the 2 new monsters and Battra, basically you already reviewed Save The Earth so you technically also covered the PS2 version of Unleashed, and I didn't know there were only a handful of Godzilla games left, that's kinda surprising actually, but then that means you'll be reviewing fangames after, I didn't think it would be so soon, I'll still watch your videos regardless of where things go

I really loved this game as a kid. I feel like most people who review this game complain about the Wii controls, which is a little sad. I grew up with a Wii, so the controls never bothered me and I had a blast, so I wonder if this game would be better remembered if it hadn't had motion controls. Maybe if the PS2 version had the Wii version's features? It's a shame that the motion controls drag it down so much.

I grew up playing nintendo games like mario and when I herd their was a godzilla game for the wii I was hyped for it! So for my middle school graduation my parents surprised me by getting me the game but we had to drive to get it and my dad didn't tell me what the surprise was so the entire car ride he made it seam like he was taking me skydiving!!! Like we even passed a air field going to the mall the store was at so it was very believable. But ya it was the game and ow boy it didn't disappoint! It was my first godzilla game and to see all the monsters fighting it was awesome! I was use to the wii controls so that didn't hinder me much so I just had fun with it and trying to unlock all monsters by their methods was really fun like hitting certain buildings or objects to spawn them then defeat them next fight to unlock them felt like the movies when a accident happened and one was made... yes I had to look up how to get some.. some I still need to unlock but that's part of the fun. Yes the controls are a bit wieard cant do some actions unless you know how to flick the remote the right way but it's a enjoyable time and they don't really make godzilla games for nintendo concels like Playstation ( godzilla for Playstation that had the sh monster arts figures as a scale for the models that I wish I could play....) so it was nice to play one... I do got double smash for the ds but ya that game is nothing like theirs bosses you can't even play as and the ybbabxyba events yaaa no its a srick to flying until you get to a boss then atomic breath them dead if you try a combo your dead. But ya I like the game wish their make more for nintendo concels thoe don't have a Playstation and the Xbox my little bro has dosent run any of the games wich stinks their so elusive to its crazy but supper fun.

I never played the first two games of the trilogy, in fact I never knew they existed until I saw the AVGN video. So for me, Godzilla unleashed (for the PS2) really did exist in a vacuum, and it was the perfect game for me. I got to play as Godzilla, fighting other monsters, and that was enough. I was always confused as to why King Ceasar was on the back cover but absent from the game, again, I never knew the Wii version existed. I think at the same time I got Double Smash for the DS, when I wasn't home, I'd always bring that game with me. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Unleash titles.

This game was my childhood when i was 8 yrs old. I'm 21 and a half yrs old now, and i still from time to time play this game. I never grew up with the other 2 games in the trilogy due to me also growing up with the Wii. When I did ask to play this game I accidentally got Double Smash, and oh boy I was disappointed that. I understand that a lot of people hated the wii controls myself included, but you get the hang of them while you play. I do wish that it had the exact same game play as Save The Earth. The Kaiju models are more detailed. the soundtrack is a banger, and as you said, MiB it does feel half cooked. Mostly the cutscenes because all they did was just use is concept art over really bad voice acting. Also the subtitles don't even match with the voices. I agree 100% with this review because myself and mostly all of your fans agree that it's a good game, but it feels so unfinished. Who was your favorite monsters to be MiB? Mine was Destoroyah because of how broken he was. His energy meter doesn't go down when u use his Horn Katana move, so you can just spam that. My 2nd is Orga cuz he can stun other monsters with his paralyzing goo move and then you can beat the shit out of the kaiju you are fighting. Sorry for the long comment 😅. Love your videos, Mib!!

I was a grown adult by the time I played this, and it was after the Wii era was over by quite a bit, but I got a copy for cheap at GameStop and geeked out over it for a LONG time as I played through the story mode. Yeah, the controls are kinda poopy sometimes, but the monster roster is great and the destructible environments are tons of fun. The only other Godzilla game I had played before this one was Super Godzilla on the SNES, so I didn't really have a lot of experience with Godzilla games at the time. It's still my favorite now, partly because I haven't played a lot of Godzilla games still.

The real tragedy of this game is if those additional characters were in the PS2 version, that probably would've been the definitive version of the game.
You can *feel* that they cobbled up the Wii version because it was the hottest console in the universe of the universe during that time.
Which is ironic when you consider that Destroy All Monsters Melee was on Gamecube and the Wii for all intent and purpose was basically a Gamecube that was twice as strong with motion controls. So saying Unleashed was being different for the sake of being different is depressingly correct.
