  • Update #2 on the Red Sea Reefer 525 XL known as the Natural Reefer. Heaps of new coral and livestock this episode!
    Tank has been running for over 4 months now from pre-cycled media moved over from the 120 and everything has settled and become stable since the move.
    Parameters are 1.025 Salinity, Average of 8.1ph (cycles through the day but refugium running when display lights are off seems to keep it from going below this), 9dkh, 420ppm Calcium, 1400 Mg, 0.00ppm Phosphate and 0 Nitrates.
    Dosing has increased as colonies continue to grow. Both Alkalinty and Calcium are now 50ml/day. Have also started to dose AcroPower in addition to the target feeding of all corals. Will see over the new few months what improvements this makes.
    The addition of new tangs with existing ones proved troublesome as you will see. Next update we will cover how the reintroduction of Don Mecca goes. The Blood Shrimp are a very costly addition in Australia, they are seriously cool and can't wait to see them set up a cleaning station.
    Just want to say a massive thanks to Cam, Ania and the team at Gallery Aquatica for their continued support in trying to learn more in this rewarding hobby. All equipment has been purchased exclusively from them and has continued to work without fault.
    A link to their Facebook page if your interested in any of the hardware in this system.

      Thank you! The Xf150 is actually overpowered for this tank as it turns out. Only running at about 40% with a 1 second pulse. Any more and it starts to damage euphyllias. Tried running the newer Xf250 on this tank and had to change back as the xf250 on pulse mode only ramps down to a minimum of 10%. As a result of this the combined flow meeting in the centre of the tank excavates the sand bed quite rapidly.

    Hey what light are you using on the refugium?

    • @NaturalReefing
      @NaturalReefing  7 лет назад

      ReefingwithO The light over the Caeto section is a Fluval Sea Halo and over the Caulerpa section is an aquaone eco glo 45cm.

    • @ReefingwithO

    • @jordrougvie89
      @jordrougvie89 7 лет назад +1

      Natural Reefing ok cool, my nitrates are around 10 at the minute.

    • @NaturalReefing
      @NaturalReefing  7 лет назад

      jord rougvie What are you using for nutrient export? Do you have some algae atm?

    • @jordrougvie89
      @jordrougvie89 7 лет назад +1

      Natural Reefing got rowaphos & caulerpa, however the caulerpa doesnt seem to be doing much, im going to increase the flow in the fuge to hopefully get better export.

    • @NaturalReefing
      @NaturalReefing  7 лет назад

      Have a look into the Redfield ratio. Have always used that with planted tanks to achieve algae free systems. Have to maintain enough nitrate and phosphate in the right ratios for both of them to be consumed. Maybe because you are using an artificial substance to reduce phosphates the macro cannot consume your excess nitrate as there is no phosphate left to grow with. Let me know what you find. This is one of the reasons i try to keep it natural 👍

    @magicstix0r 7 лет назад

    Drip acclimation is an absolute waste on corals...

    • @NaturalReefing
      @NaturalReefing  7 лет назад

      Do you not acclimate your inverts? Have you lost any pieces after transporting them and dropping them into new water at all? It's only Natural sea water, so not wasting to much.

    • @magicstix0r
      @magicstix0r 7 лет назад +1

      I acclimate certain inverts, yes, but not corals. I just float the bag for even temp and drop them in (probably don't even need to do that much). I've never lost a coral.
      Think of it this way, there are people who dip their corals in insecticide to get rid of possible hitchhikers. That's going to cause a much worse shock than putting them in your display tank. With a mail-ordered piece of livestock, the important thing is to get them out of ammonia tainted water into clean water as soon as possible. If salinity and temp match between your bag and the tank, it's much better to get them into the clean water sooner than leave them in increasingly toxic bag water (toxicity of ammonia goes up with pH, and pH starts to rise once you open the bag).
      Corals are osmotically passive compared to their environment, and often corals spend time out of the water at low tide, so a salinity shift is generally not going to hurt them (not that there will be much of a salinity shift say, compared to fish, where the sellers often run low salinity to prevent parasites).

    • @NaturalReefing
      @NaturalReefing  7 лет назад

      magicstix0r Thanks for your help! You have made some very valid points. Surely insecticide would be more of a shock than anything to do with water parameters! Thanks for shedding some knowledge and insight onto the subject, I'm only very new to the hobby :)

    Wtf is with you adding that many animals at once? Are you just expecting most of them to die? Do you understand what coral species are compatible or are you just guessing and using shotgun as a method? Stop doing what you don't comprehend.
