Review of the Nikon D850 camera for Landscape Photographers

  • How good of a camera is the new Nikon D850 for landscape photography? See how it holds up after shooting 1000 images in the field.
    CLARIFICATION: In the video I stated that use of silent shutter could help avoid shutter wear and resale value. While it avoids shutter wear, the metadata in the file increments no matter what. There does not appear to be a way to retrieve the number of shutter cycles, just the number of images saved.
    Key segments:
    0:00 Intro
    1:45 Focusing
    3:30 Live view noise vs D810
    4:02 Tilt Screen
    4:47 Focus Stacking ("Focus Shift")
    9:45 Long shutter, Cost of Accessories, and Conclusion

    Thanks for an excellent review Greg, I am collecting a new D850 on Monday and look forward to more interesting articles and newsletters. I found your site today while looking for some "quick" start info.

    Thank you for the helpful review. I have such a challenging time focusing at night with the d810 that hearing your comments about the significant improvement in this area with the d850 has made me seriously consider upgrading, now all I need is a few lucky lotto numbers and away I go!!!

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +metals I don’t want to oversell it as making it the simplest thing ever, but it’s a substantial improvement, and the live view clip I put in the review shows it pretty well. It’s my favorite new feature. I definitely have missed focus with some Milky Way shots on the D810, and have found my hit rate to be much better with the D850.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +metals another option for night skies is the Rokinon 14mm SP f/2.4 or Sigma 14mm f/1.8. Not as big a gain in my experience, but they aid night focusing and are great lenses for the night sky.

    • @metals2546
      @metals2546 6 лет назад

      Thank you for the reply. I have been considering the sigma 14 f1.8, currently I use the nikon 14-24 f2.8 and really enjoy that lens, but have been considering other options due to the focusing challenges I have. And at my age, my eyes are, ....well ,...just plane old!!! So any and all help is needed

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +metals I own the Nikon and recently tested that Sigma lens and it beats the Nikon for image quality and ease of focusing at 14mm, at least for night shots. Downside is no zoom to 24 and it’s even heavier.

    Thanks for a very useful review. I was going to upgrade my 610 to a 750 for the tilt screen and better -ev, but seeing that clean star and focusing through a 10 stop ND has definitely made me think again... :) PS: WRT > 30sec, does the new start/stop mode not kinda handle that?

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      +Colin Jenkins you can take long exposures that way (or with bulb mode like we’ve always had), but you still need an intervalometer or remote release (and then need to time things manually). Neither nearly as simple as just setting the long shutter speed you want.

    • @colintomjenkins
      @colintomjenkins 6 лет назад

      OK, thanks Greg. If I may, one other question. On my D610 doing star trails I have to set the interval to 33 secs for repeated 30 sec exposures and I get little gaps (using the fastest SD card I could buy). Do you know if the D850 can improve on that? I was watching an Elia Locardi video and he showed that the Fuji X-T2 can do essentially gapless trails. Pipelining the write with the next exposure maybe; dunno, but it's obviously possible with at least some modern cameras.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +Colin Jenkins should’ve be an issue if you’ve set it to no exposure delay. It can shoot multiple frames per second, not nearly long enough a gap to show up in a long exposure like that. Make sure Long exposure noise reduction is off, that would create gaps as long as the exposure.

    • @colintomjenkins
      @colintomjenkins 6 лет назад

      :) noise reduction is off and I agree it makes no sense but there are lots of threads on the web about this; but I've taken enough of your time; thanks again for the review. I'll try and get my hands on one.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      +Colin Jenkins the only things I can think of that would cause such a gap would be noise reduction, exposure delay mode, or a gap set in the intervalometer. I’ve used an external bulb trigger locked down on continuous shooting to capture smooth star trails on the D810, I would expect the D850 is similarly ok.

    Thanks for the review. I'm still shooting a D800. I'm thinking of upgrading but it still works perfect and it takes such beautiful pictures that I'm having a hard time selling my wife on it! lol

    • @WhittyPics
      @WhittyPics 6 лет назад

      I have two D800s. The image quality if incredible though they are slow. It is the speed of the D850 that temps me. Image quality wise I don't think the D850 will be ground breaking better but a little better. We are looking at 25% more pixels. DXOMARK actually rates the D180 slightly better at HIGH ISO than the D850. Dynamic Range seems pretty close too. Both my D800s are like new with low shutter counts so I am not in any hurry to upgrade. I bet a year from now they could be running specials to move stock. It will be hard to get our hands on one for a few months.

    • @adamaj74
      @adamaj74 6 лет назад

      Agreed Dennis. The D800 is slow at only 4-6 fps depending on mode and whether you have the grip. But, I only shoot portrait, landscapes and occasionally macro, so I don't miss a high frame rate. I do want to get into wildlife photography at some point so I may have to upgrade eventually.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      +derrick kelly no, I’m not planning to buy it. The a7Rii meets already my needs for light travel, and honestly I don’t use it nearly as much as the D810/D850. Over the past year, I’ve found that mirrorless save very little weight, and presents a more cumbersome interface due to loss of buttons.

    • @derrickkelly4745
      @derrickkelly4745 6 лет назад

      Thanks for response. I understand your position regarding the handling. I have the A7R2 myself and it's taken me a long time to get used to it. But just think, the A7R3 might solve all your handling issues, with the touchscreen and joystick :) Cheers.

      I'll be very curious to see. I'd buy a D850 successor in a hot minute. I'd also be eager to get the next similar Z camera beyond what I've got. Curious to see how mirrorless shakes out with Nikon having a great product, but Sony and Canon taking lead and the implications for their business.

  • @Moriningland
    @Moriningland 6 лет назад +3

    Darn you GREG! I had decided not to buy this but your review is swaying me! Now I've got a bad case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I'm having a hard time though because by D810 has depreciated SOOO much in value, 1800 at least in three years. Man, I can't eat that cost each time. Hopefully, the prices on the D850 will drop and the resale value on the D810 stays close to the same.
    I mainly do night shooting, so the improved ISO, screen noise, dark focusing and illuminated buttons are interesting, but I still can't bear to lose that much money on my D810.

      Greg Benz thanks for that! I think I will most likely wait. If I could upgrade for 1000 out of pocket I would. Maybe one day I can do that and I will have a camera that I could fee great shooting another 10 years with.

    Random question: does it not come with a hot shoe cover? I haven’t seen one in all the videos I’ve watched.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +Andrew Neal I don’t remember seeing one. But I never use them anyhow, even when shooting in the ocean. A cover is not sealed, so all you’d be doing is making it harder for any water that (inevitably) gets in to evaporate. Not clear to me that it is necessary or even beneficial.

      Greg Benz that’s true, I guess I just like the clean look when the cover is on. So just a cosmetic thing.

    Nikon has had a lot of bent pin issues with the compact flash cards. That is one of the main reasons they have been moving away from them. I have a D500. That XQD is damn fast if you get the fastest versions.

    • @gregbenzphotography

    • @BrianPex
      @BrianPex 6 лет назад

      Greg Benz Oh yeah. That’s the one thing I’ve truly loved about the D750. It keeps you clean and not even that - it’s just much easier and better. When you’re comfortable you just do everything that much better. Composing a scene is no different. :-) It could be really damp and with a D810, you’re gonna get wet. With the D850, just bend your knees and squat down and you’re fine :-)

      As great as the screen is, it doesn't help you if you're shooting vertical. Hopefully we see that in cameras soon.

    I don’t believe the focus peaking works during video.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      +Harlan Mccoy it does, but only with certain settings (no 4k or electronic VR unfortunately).

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      +Harlan Mccoy ultimately, this camera offers much better video than its predecessor, but lacks some key features serious videographers expect these days.

      @BittyVids 6 лет назад +1

      good to know, thanks

  • @aussie8114
    @aussie8114 6 лет назад

    A lot of these things you point out seem pretty irrelevant to me. I've never had night focusing problems, the LCD screen seems excellent and no noise. That focus shifting seems like a gimmick for photographers that don't know how to take a good photo. And the high res sensor has its image shake issues. The D810 sucks for video focus but I'm not interested in becoming a cinematographer. Maybe if you show there's a special difference in the out of camera images I might be interested, but until then my $5,400 stays in my pocket.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like it isn’t the camera for you, which is why I comment on the detail. Doesn’t matter to me if you buy it or not, it isn’t for everyone. I wouldn’t say the image quality based on the sensor is dramatically better than the D810.

    • @aussie8114
      @aussie8114 6 лет назад

      Greg Benz Okey dokey.... If it wasn't so expensive I would still swap one of my d810's with one but it would cost $3,400 on top of my d810 second hand value so I can't see the value for me. I can have 2.5 d810's for the price of one d850. And I think the the high res sensor would give me shake problems.

    • @donaldlyons7143
      @donaldlyons7143 6 лет назад +2

      You’re way off base on the focus shift shooting comment. When you’re looking for razor front-to-back sharpness and avoiding diffraction, focus stacking is the answer...pretty much the best answer...macro or landscape. Hyper-focal is helpful but can be dicey. Focus shift shooting takes only seconds to preset and shoot vs. the time-consuming alternative of manually moving focus. You completely avoid alignment issues with amazing results. Rent a d850 and check it out for yourself. I agree with Greg on his sensor comment. I sold my D810 and don’t regret the upgrade.

    • @aussie8114
      @aussie8114 6 лет назад

      Donald Lyons I was probably a bit harsh on my comment. I do recognise the benefit of focus stacking and this feature being able to focus bracket in camera is more convenient I guess than doing it manually, but for me focus stacking is not something I would use. I do recognise the D850 is a better camera in all respects, though the very high res I don't see as a benefit with my non vr lenses. I see it as a liability for camera shake issues. My D810 36 mpix sensor is more than I need. The issue I have is my 2 pre loved D810's cost me $4,300 in total. The D850 can't be had at a good pre loved price if at all. So 1 new D850 would cost $1,000 more than my 2 mint condition D810’s. It's just not worth it, not in Australia anyway. At $3,300 in the U.S. I would definitely buy one, but not at $5,400 in Australia.

  • @christopherkotsopoulos701
    @christopherkotsopoulos701 6 лет назад

    It's actually not true that you need an intervalometer to shoot very long exposures. If you got to "time" mode, which is found after 30 seconds and bulb, the exposures starts after you hit the shutter once and stops when you hit it again. All you need in this case is a regular wired/wireless remote.

    • @gregbenzphotography
      @gregbenzphotography  6 лет назад

      +Chris Kotsopoulos true, and I should have stated that more clearly. But the point is the same- it’s a hassle, and manually timing (with or without using a remote) is as much hassle as using an intervalometer. Being able to set a time on the camera would be much simpler. No external device, no need to babysit the timing.

    • @christopherkotsopoulos701
      @christopherkotsopoulos701 6 лет назад

      Agreed. It's something that makes you scratch your head "what were they thinking?"

    • @christopherkotsopoulos701
      @christopherkotsopoulos701 6 лет назад

      This is a step in the right direction, though. At least now people that don't already have an intervalometer don't need to buy one now anymore. Most serious photographers already have a wireless/wired remote to prevent camera shake on longer exposures that need to be fired off instantly instead of using the 2 second timer mode.

    • @Moriningland
      @Moriningland 6 лет назад +1

      That's what I use as well, I've tested the shots between the remote and the - - mode and I've not seen a difference in sharpness.
