Oh, interesting what kind of content brings in new viewers :D Hannah made videos for over a decade now. Check out her other channel too: Hannah Witton, its not active anymore but contains lots of sex education vids and stuff...
As someone who has been following her for over a decade, I am genuinely curious how the algorithm made this specifically out of everything she’s ever created your first video😂 (it is a very good video)
@@thefandomhunter 🤣 I have no idea. The only reason I can think of is that I follow a channel called Map Men (they talk about maps) and recently re-watched a few of their UK specific videos. I also watch a boatload of food/cooking videos including some on sandwiches. 🤷🏾♂️ 🤣
Being from the US, I have been hearing about UK meal deals for years, so this is fascinating to me. No one has mentioned the prices before that I've seen, so color me shocked to find out that a meal is around £5! That's such a steal! Would love to have something like that in the US.
A lot of quick-serve restaurants in the US let you "make it a meal" by adding a drink and side to your sandwich for a small discount, but never at this low of a price. It would still be like $15-17 easily.
@C_Beaty It's crazy how expensive meals can be! Some restaurants don't even offer meal options and you have to pay $10 for a sandwich, $4 for one-size fries, and $3 for a drink. Or you can pay $10 for a sandwich and side plus an additional $3 for a beverage.
You do have to take into account relative housing and salary numbers. All that boring adult stuff. It probably works out similarly in relative value. For context, I’m in the U.K., and employed in a decent job. A meal deal is the best deal available for eating out normally, but eating out is not something I can normally justify. There would have to be a special reason, like not being able to carry food with me due to volume of other equipment (I often carry a lot of stuff for work). But it’s going to be planned. Not on a whim. If you have a two salary household then it migh5 be different.
The meal deal at M&S in Edinburgh Waverley train station (the one that Hannah definitely got the train to London from Edinburgh from) costs £6!!!!! Once forgot my lunch on the way to uni and bought at the station and almost remortgaged my parents house
Hannah, this might be the best video you've ever made. Lmfao. Its just so ridiculous that I'm cracking up lol. I've never thought about ranking ham sandwiches. But now....
All the other channels I'm watching: It's the holidays! Let's wrap gifts! Let's have fun drinks! Let's hang out with friends! Hannah: Let's try some Hanukkah ham sandwiches! 😄
Hannah, your microphone is very powerful. I can hear the chewing of certain sandwiches! I didn’t know I had a thing about hearing people eat until watching and listening to you eat. 😄
11:00 I always find WHSmiths food is more expensive that you'd think considering their brand and my theory for this is their food section is often only in the stores they have in train stations/airports/service stations which are all places where you have limited other options and often have to grab something in a pinch, so they can afford to be a bit more expensive as they have limited competition 👀
While I was very intrigued by these types of sandwiches being sold in grocery stores, not in the bakery section (I'm from Germany), the most fascinating part about the meal deal to me was the inclusion of a bag of crisps in the meal.
@@JuMixBoox When I was visiting England I sometimes got the crisps, mostly I got a chocolate bar, tiny pack of sweets or the vitamins. Even though as a main you can also choose a salad or a wrap that has a bit more vegetables that Hanna's plain ham sandwich 😅
This was an unexpected video from you Hannah! 🤣 I'd love to see a bit of analysis of cost/taste vs welfare for the piggies. I know this is just a bit of fun but I do love how you incorporate an ethical element in a lot of your videos (e.g. shopping sustainable/ second hand fashion) and I'd love to see it with food too. A lot of mother pigs get kept in "farrowing crates" (barren cages that are so small they can't even turn around in) when they give birth and during the 3 weeks they get to spend with their piglets. It's so sad because pigs are actually great mums and love collecting nesting material for their babies and they're not allowed to perform any of their natural mothering behaviours on most farms. So it'd be interesting to compare welfare as a factor for consideration as well as taste/price!
I also love a plain sandwich - chicken is my go to. I do think this is a British thing and something I always enjoy when I visit the uk. I am grateful for 8 days of your videos at this time of year, thank you 🧡🌻🕎🎄
My brother doesn’t like mayo, so a plain ham sandwich, or even a ham and cheese sandwich sans mayo if they exist, is a god send to him. He’s fussy but would like to have different sandwich fillings available without mayo.
happy christmas and happy hannukah, hannah!!! hope you are having a wonderful time celebrating 💛 you've got this vegan watching a ham sandwich ranking just because it's you!!
This is the most funny start to a Vlognukah 😂 happy holidays and thanks for the holiday entertainment! In Australia our convenience stores try and do the meal deal but the sandwiches are awful so I don't know anyone who gets them over a pie or a sausage roll.
As an autistic girlie with a lot of sensory issues around food, this video is right up my alley! 😁 I enjoy a lot of processed food too because the textures are always the same, but something about a lot of pre-packaged 'on the go' foods creeps me out lol, I have a few very specific sandwiches and stuff that I am able to eat. We don't have that many options here in general (Dutch culture is heavy on homemade lunches) and I eat vegetarian/vegan so I usually struggle to find something when I'm out and about and I don't have anything with me. I spent a few months in the UK when I was studying at uni and I loved all the options for meal deals!
As another girlie with a lot of sensory issues around food this video was really hard to watch. Touching the ham and not washing the hands right away gave me second hand sensory ick. And I generally can not eat premade sandwitch stuff, they all majorly gross me out, so it's dry bread with salami sticks most of the time.
The meal deal is saving my life when I visit UK. I'm usually travelling on budget and a meal deal and a pack of triple chocolate cookies (Sainsbury is my favourite) can see me through the whole day 😅 My go to is usually either a spicy chicken wrap or one of the pastas, I don't love the kind of bread used in this sandwiches, but maybe I'll try a sandwich next time 😊
I'm a plain cheese, no mayo sandwich gal myself (preferably from Sainsburys) so I'm here for this! There's something about mayo on soft bread that I just can't get behind😅
I’m exactly the same: always Just Ham. But also I refuse to buy drinks in plastic bottles so my can of drink is also the cheapest option in the Meal Deal 😂 Tesco is my go-to, and if I didn’t have a clubcard I don’t think I’d save anything at all with the deal
I’m from the US, and I was a plain sandwiches only girlie until I visited the UK, funnily enough. While I was there, it was the meal deal sandwiches that caused me to acquire more of a taste for mayo and cheese. I was convinced that British mayo was different, and maybe it is, but I’m now realizing that if butter is a ham sandwich staple here, that certainly would have made a difference in flavor! Maybe I need to start adding a little butter to my sandwiches here 🤔
Oh! I also meant to mention that before I visited the UK back in 2015, I never used to see anything equivalent to the meal deals here, and I was very excited by them during my stay, but now they seem a bit more common in more places.
Watching you put an 'm' in sandwich every single time is bringing me too much joy. 😅 "samwich" Is that a british thing? A Manchester thing? or a Hannah thing? 😍
Plain white bread ham sandwich is such a comfort food for me. Not been feeling well and now I need to go to the shops and get some ham. So funny this was a vlognukah video! P.S. Tesco meal is £3.60 with a clubcard.
I'm not opposed to the "fancy" multiple filling sandwiches; however I do love me a plain sandwich. My favourite plain sandwich is probably a cheese and white bread. But ham and butter is also very good. I'm also a fan of ham & cheese or tomato & cheese
I’m a vegetarian. I still watched this whole video intently. I do however, work with a young person who only eats ham sandwiches so this is useful info.
I hate mayonnaise and so as a 29 year old woman, I also choose the Just Ham sandwich every time. I am fine with brown bread though. Won't be for Hannah but the Pret ham sandwich on brown bread is the only one I have ever found where they include seasoning (a little black pepper in a plain ham sandwich is weirdly good)
Tesco meal deal with a ham sandwich, pack of fridge raiders, bottle of water and a cheeky chocolate bar as an add on is my go to Monday night tea. I have to get something on the way to the dance class I take after work, and the little Tesco is perfectly placed for me to stop off. Got to get protein, carbs and a hit of sugar, otherwise I’m not going to have enough energy and feel sick by the end of class, but it can’t be too heavy otherwise I’ll feel sick at the start.
7am watching hannah eat ham sandwiches while im still in bed on xmas morning haha a lovely way to start the day thanks for the distraction indeed im so very excited to have every day videos for a lil bit! exciting! merry xmas happy Hanukkah has anyone made the joke happy hannahkkah? 😂 sending love to you & yours this holiday season❤ i live in usa so ive never had this meal deal but idk ham isnt my go to sandwich of choice 🤔
I have the exactly same thing with shop bought sandwiches!! I'll eat anything in a sandwich at home or somewhere where they're made fresh but there's something about a chilled packaged sandwich that I have a visceral aversion to! I'm also the same with most meal deal pasta pots so my options for meal deals are very limited!! 😭 (shout out to curry in a naan my beloved)
I bought a plain ham sandwich once and weirdly really enjoyed it as it had plenty of filling. I usually go for the various cheese options but instead of the meal deal I'll just buy the sandwich and a multipack of crisps as I tend to already have my water bottle with me. or I'll buy a pack of rolls, small packet of sliced ham/cheese and make my own sandwich to save money. Although this obviously means carrying round rolls/extra crisps/snacks which may not be convenient or practical always.
I am and always will be a egg and cress enjoyer. (Yes this video was strangely thrilling to me) Unless theres a sainsburys and then i treat myself to a mozzarella, tomato and basil pesto wrap
I also go for the plain ham sandwich in a meal deal! The more complicated sandwiches can give me the ick, especially if there’s too much wetness in there with something like mayo… but I do feel like I have to get a fancy snack and drink to make sure I am maximising the value because the sarnie is cheap 😂
In America, it would have no butter, a packet of mayonnaise and mustard on the side, and a slice of(most likely) american cheese. No meal deals either.
i'm american so i know none of these brands. and i'm also vegan. and i am not a picky eater at all, i love a FANCY sandwich. so i lowkey have no idea what's going on in this video but yay vlognukah! 😂
I hate mayo, one of the few meal deal sandwiches without it is the tesco chicken tikka which is delicious but i think they've discontinued it 😢. I could eat a ham no mayo sandwich but would need to put crisps in there to break up the soft white bread 😅. I usually get the cheese and tomato pasta, sometimes a chicken pasta (without mayo) and there are a few good wraps - M&S chicken fajita is a good one!
I don't live in the UK and don't eat meat, but this was a very enjoyable video to watch. I love these comparisons of simple food items. A few years ago I did a ranking for the best cheese tards, because I was so disappointed by some of them and wanted to make sure that I knew where to get the best ones 😂
I just don’t get the point of a ham sandwich in a meal deal, it’s just so easy to make at home! It’s a waste of a meal deal 😅 A southern fried chicken wrap isn’t as easy or convenient to make at home so that’s usually my go to 😂
The plain ham sandwich has fewer ick possibilities because it does not take long for extra ingredients like lettuce and tomatoes to become mushy and turn the bread to mush as well, so I do appreciate the simplicity. As an American, my favorite simple sandwich is the Arby's classic roast beef, which is a bunch of sliced roast beef on a toasted sesame seed bun, nothing else. Arby's sells a bunch of other more complicated things, but only the classic can be eaten with one hand with no mess, having no sauce or other ingredients to drip or fall on me while I am doing something else like driving. It is a true successor to the original intent of the Earl of Sandwich.
My go to meal deal sandwich tends to be the Chicken and Bacon one though I will change it up if for some reason I have more than one meal deal in a week (unusual). It's normally always chicken I pick though: chicken and bacon, chicken and sweetcorn or if I'm really hungry, the chicken triple!
Meal deals generally worth it even with the cheaper sandwiches cos everything else is so expensive! Had a Tesco one the other day and the Dr Pepper bottle was like £1.90 and the crisps (cos they mostly only sell the bigger bags now) were £1.30 I think. So if the sandwich is more than £1.30 you're saving money #girlmaths
I’m such a picky eater at 33, I like brown bread, proper ham and mustard not packet ham, can’t be white bread because with the butter be soggy. So looking at this meal deal I feel like they out too much butter on this bread. I do like meal deals chicken and bacon is my go to. I’m a picky eater with everything
Also a 30-something woman who only eats the plain ham or plain cheese sandwiches! It's nice to find someone with the same palatte. I hate all the sauces in most, I really hate the super fancy sandwiches (e.g. work catering for an event) and ones with lots of ingredients. Especially hidden ingredients. Hidden onion or celery in an otherwise fine tuna melt, yuck. Hidden mayo in a ham and cheese sandwich, no thanks! The best sandwich options are those places where you can choose your own ingredients in a baguette - but not Subway, obviously, as the bread there (and no butter) is the most foul bread I've ever tasted without mould.
We have had similar things in the US, but mostly at larger gas stations. They aren't a set price though. We might have a hot dog, chips (crisps), and a drink for $7 or something like that. This seems like a great idea for people on the go.
I’m a 31 year old woman and have the absolute same tendencies. I can’t cope with meal deal sandwiches so would also go for a plain ham or cheese. That being said, I love the M&S chicken Caesar wrap, and will always get that if it’s available
P.S. "Meal Deal" in the U.S. is pretty much a McDonald's thing generally with a hamburger, fries and a drink. I'm pretty sure they cost about $12.00 now, so not much of a deal. (That's just under 10 pounds)
I lived in the UK for one year about ten years ago. ‘Meal deal’ was a new expression for me. At the time they usually came with a small bag of crisps/chips. I was disappointed at how few places offered a veggie sticks or piece of fruit option. Has that improved?
These prices are so baffling! $3 for a sandwich??? I’m shocked, dismayed, and honestly considering moving to England because you cannot get a sandwich for $3 in Canada. The last time I got a basic sandwich at the grocery store it was $9.
"we've got a bit of ham hanging out like a fun labia" is the quote of the year 😂
Followed by - if I had middle class tastes buds I'd eat aubergine 😂
The casual comparison between a ham sandwich and a labia is the Hannah content we're here for!
All the Christmas videos on RUclips are overwhelming right now. Then Hannah posts one about ham sandwiches. Perfect distraction thank you!
This is so funny to me because I have the opposite problem to you where ham sandwiches on white bread SPECIFICALLY make me feel ill lol
Omg same! Something about it sets off my gag reflex and I just can't cope!
Me too! And I am not British. But here I am watching the ham sandwich competition. haha

Hello fellow vegetarian!
Pretty nearly plant-based myself (occasional honey with tea when ill), and I am also intrigued

I like the grouping in the end, it makes it more clear to me what is going on when I can't really visualise the taste differences otherwise.

It definitely would have been that M&S! The ham sandwich might not be great but their chocolate covered custard creams are incredible!

I don't live in the UK and don't eat meat, but this was a very enjoyable video to watch. I love these comparisons of simple food items. A few years ago I did a ranking for the best cheese tards, because I was so disappointed by some of them and wanted to make sure that I knew where to get the best ones 😂
I love egg salad sandwiches from M&S my favorite 💚💚❤️🌨️🌨️❤️🎅🏻🎄💚☃️🎅🏻🎁🎁❤️🌨️🌨️❤️💚🎄🎄🎄☃️❄️☃️🎁
You're not the only one. I can only buy plain prepared sandwiches. I never get my money's worth at Subway because I just want meat, cheese, and sauce.
Hahaha that’s girlmaths
Merry Christmas to you Hannah from Minnesota.
Ham and cheese with mayo is my favourite meal deal sandwich of choice - I usually go to coop for mine
extremely relatable fussy eater content 10/10
We have had similar things in the US, but mostly at larger gas stations. They aren't a set price though. We might have a hot dog, chips (crisps), and a drink for $7 or something like that. This seems like a great idea for people on the go.
aw the little flower names are so cute!
I’m a 31 year old woman and have the absolute same tendencies. I can’t cope with meal deal sandwiches so would also go for a plain ham or cheese. That being said, I love the M&S chicken Caesar wrap, and will always get that if it’s available
My go to is usually an egg salad and bacon/egg salad and lettuce from 7/11 or Woolies, idk why but it hits different in that little pack 😂
Also so crazy how cheap some of these are! Just the sandwhich is like $6aud here lmao
P.S. "Meal Deal" in the U.S. is pretty much a McDonald's thing generally with a hamburger, fries and a drink. I'm pretty sure they cost about $12.00 now, so not much of a deal. (That's just under 10 pounds)
As someone who don't like chicken or mayo, a ham or cheese sandwich tends to b my go to meal deal sandwiches
I lived in the UK for one year about ten years ago. ‘Meal deal’ was a new expression for me. At the time they usually came with a small bag of crisps/chips. I was disappointed at how few places offered a veggie sticks or piece of fruit option. Has that improved?
Tesco cheese and pickle sandwich is the best ❤️
Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah!
I'm curious, would you go for a ham and cheese? Or strictly just ham?
finished this video and immediately made a ham sandwich on white bread with butter
I’m an ✨influencer✨
I'm too fussy and won't eat bought sandwiches cos I get a mental image of people's hands fiddling about and always wonder how clean they are 😮
Surely they’re wearing gloves when made or they’re made by machines?!
These prices are so baffling! $3 for a sandwich??? I’m shocked, dismayed, and honestly considering moving to England because you cannot get a sandwich for $3 in Canada. The last time I got a basic sandwich at the grocery store it was $9.
I just got to the bit where you’re explaining that a bunch of people were keen for you to make this video and I just want to say: same
