I loved this song when it originally came out, but like every other song on the radio at that time that was popular, it became like the words in the song - played out recording. LOL If you think about the time that was to come (80s was all about Jane Fonda workouts, jazzercise, aerobics, cardio - it was EVERYWHERE - everyone had a VHS workout to pawn off - it was overload and excess just like the excess of the 80s).

*She's* the one that wrote "if you're not into yoga." She wrote the first ad (in the first verse), that he responded to without knowing it was her.
It's not the greatest song ever, but it has a catchy chorus you can sing along to, and an amusing story with a mildly clever twist. It also has a moral about relationships and how lack of communication can lead you into a rut because you don't really know each other.
And on soft rock and pop stations back then it got played about 5 times per hour. I may be exaggerating, but not by *that* much.

Maybe, due to poor communication, she thought that about him but i think it shows they didn't really communicate well with each other so they didn't truly know much about each other; because they liked what each other wrote. Then, after meeting and having a real talk, they realized they didn't know these things about each other, which they were looking for all along. They were pleasantly surprised and decided to give it another go. Yeah, i probably made too much of it, ok? c'mon, back off, guys. I'm just trying to live and insert my bs, too.

The song makes you think the story is about a man unhappy in his relationship so he is looking for someone else. But the swerve of the song is that the problem wasn't the person he was with, it was a lack of communication.
Had the couple just been honest about the things they liked and wanted in a relationship, they could have avoided the whole thing and been happy the whole time.
And it took these events to wake them up.

There is a famous story about a French couple that did grow old together. They never talked about which side of the breakfast bun they preferred though. They both just assumed that one liked the top and the other liked the bottom. When the subject finally came up, they had both assumed wrong. For a whole life. Communication is like... important. :)

It’s about lack of communication. Sometimes we think our relationships have become stale and we don’t enjoy each other’s company anymore, when in reality, we’ve simply stopped communicating. Good song.

I think you missed something here. She wrote the original ad and SHE liked Pina Coladas, loved the rain, didn't like yoga, and wanted someone that was smart (or had at least half a brain 😁). He responded with his own ad saying, "Yeah, I like Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain ...". So, both of them were looking for something different, but their REAL problem was, a lack of communication, which is why MANY relationships fail. It sounds bad that both were looking elsewhere, but it seems like they were not married, and just coming to the conclusion that they were not happy, when all the time, they just didn't communicate, probably because they didn't want to make waves. What they learned in the end was, that's what makes a relationship work ... communicating.

the first time they do the ad in the paper it was her that posted it looking for someone else.
    If you like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
    If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you like makin' love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
    Write to me and escape.
The second time it was his response to her ad

She wrote the first personal ad saying, "If you're not into yoga. If You have half a brain." So it was his girlfriend who first went behind his back looking for someone different, who was NOT a hippie health nut and who was NOT dumb as a door knob. She's saying that she wants someone who IS on the smart side and NOT dumb and who has common sense.

This song was Rupert Holmes' debut song. Not only that this song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the very last week of December, 1979; but this song was the very last #1 hit song of the 1970s according to Billboard Magazine. What a way to end the 1970s with a cheesy, but yet a great pop song indeed!!!

All I can think if when I hear this is the movie Dirty Work. They're about to have a bar fight and Chris Farley goes to the jukebox and says something like "Street fight man, G7!!!!!!!" Then someone says, "You just pressed G8". Then this song comes on and they have to have a bar fight to this song lol. R.I.P. Chris Farley.

i see the song more as a hypothetical conversation that lovers have about what if he or she did this or that but in the end the love is there. philosophical.

I’m old so I can help with that classic old expression “if you have half a brain” Back in the day (the 70s) it simply meant that you’re not a fool or an idiot or you’re mildly smart or wise. It was often used in relation to some kind of action and may also convey general ambition. Ie. “when he re-paints that truck if he has half a brain he’ll use 2 coats of primer”… So glad you guys reacted to this 70s classic tune. Cheers !

The whole point of the songs is that even when people live together, they can have terrible communication. However... in this instance... they both actually loved what each had to offer, even though neither of them outwardly knew it. Relationships are tough, and sometimes we as humans love each other, but fall out of love be cause we forget each other's passions.
