      Max Compilations that’s right. All Class 1 railroads are supposed to have ID badge/signs on each warning light post. It states the exact milepost (such as 000J69 or ANB865) and other info. A quick call gets the Central Command operator quickly, and in seconds they can reach the dispatcher covering that territory. Dispatcher then calls the train immediately and warns them. It works very well. 😊

      Flawed we all are. But distractions are distractions only if you allow them to distract you for any length of time. Knowing what's not important when driving and not getting distracted by the trivial is good driving. And not adding to the possible things that take your attention away from the road. Fiddling with the audio system, texting, putting on makeup, consulting a map or app, looking at the scenery, turning your head to talk to the person right next to you (or the kids in the back seat), daydreaming, etc. Three of those were the reasons why I've been rear ended while sitting at stoplights/signs.

      If y’all wanna know the reasoning behind this here it is; the reason for this is because the train was going at such a high rate of speed. As soon as the gate went down you could see the officer in the bottom right of the screen Wilkie talkie over to the disbatch Centre. Now once they do that it takes about 1 minute to contact the train disbathcers who have to contact the train driver. So the train driver did not even know until he saw the flashing lights. When the train driver saw the flashing lights he could proceed to making his speed 40mph. Which it looks like he did for a few seconds. The. The train operator saw the lights of the other car on the tracks and put the emergency brakes on. After he put the brakes on the train goes much slower but not slow enough. At this stage he is inches from the crossing area. When he finally hits the car, that slows down the train a tiny bit, which is enough to stop the train.
      Wow a lot of detail huh?

      @SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад +17

      Yes, a either local or toll-free phone number and a DOT Crossing ID number are now required by Law to be posted at the crossing on at least one of the signs. Certain companies have asserted that every upright shall have the info, as well as the signal shanty. That usually with the name of the street or nearest crossroad will give the person taking the call a good reference of the crossing location and can alert the dispatcher, who can in turn alert any trains on the track at that moment. Of course, that's if the number you call isn't busy or you are put on hold for a half hour. At least CSX now has an Emergency option when you call so you don't have to wait in queue behind the people who call 87 times a day to ask when the next train is.

      @@markbonner1139, it all depends on how fast the people at the incident get the emergency number off the sign then call the RR. then the RR cops notify the dispatcher who tells the train of the situation. if notice is given soon enough, the train stops prior to collision. this train must have been notified a mile or more before because he was alllllmost stopped in time.

    • @TheL0rdOfTheStrings
      @TheL0rdOfTheStrings 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@googoo-gjoob actually in my opinion, the people on train had zero knowledge of the incident, simply because incident happened at 18:22 and train was already there at 18:26. Policeman was also trying to notify train driver with this lamp which he had no reason to do if train was aware of the incident. But you can see they realized something was wrong because they saw police lights and also vehicle on the track, so they were probably starting to slow down. But only at around 1:09 mark, you can see emergency stop being activated (red lights in the train cab) and train stopping almost immediately after.

I respond to 4 or 5 of them daily that don't understand that they were in the fast lane of the interstate going 35 or 40 (speed limit is 75 on interstates here in most areas) and get rear ended and I have to go cut them out. Aaron Long engineer was already made aware of the vehicle over the radio, just wasn't alerted in time to stop short of the car. You can tell he had the brakes applied from a good distance back. Horn was simply to tell everyone to get back because he had most likely already judged his stopping distance past the car.

      @Drewg351 Год назад

      @@RockandRollWoman, to "dump a train" means to "put it in emergency". It can be very risky and cause a major derailment depending upon a myriad of factors, such as train length, weight, type, if it has a lot of cars with cushioned drawbars, speed, straight track or curved, hill or grade, and many more. It's considered a last resort and something an engineer needs to know ahead of time based on all those factors I mentioned. That's why honestly, I will not "dump my train" if I see a trespasser on the tracks or a pedestrian trying to beat a crossing, etc.... I wait until I hit them, and then will make the decision to dump the train if absolutely necessary vs bringing it to a stop consistent with good train handling. You cannot run trains thinking you need to dump it every time you see a trespasser or pedestrian. 95% of the time, they "make it across" or "get off the tracks", so dumping it could end up costing a lot more lives.

    As a conductor for UP i seen a few comments giving all the credit to the engineer, that conductor was HIS saving grace because on the conductor side of the locomotive is a emergency brake and yes the engineer dumped the air but the conductor played a role too. We're actually the first ones off the locomotive in incidents like these.

    A lot of people don’t know this but a burning highway flare on the tracks is considered a red light. Trains must stop for red lights. A well placed burning flare upstream & downstream of the vehicle might have prevented this collision?

    • @Bibibosh

      Sean Bond it was intentional. The train driver could have stopped but chose to move the car off the tracks before stopping.

      Guys....I’m sorry, but no. I do this for a living. Those are containers that they are hauling. I’ve gone out to investigate plenty of these. Sometimes they are already going slow enough to where they can stop in time, and it works out, But you cannot stop a Train of at least 5,000 tons (if not more) from that distance, traveling 49 to 50 mph without impacting the vehicle. There’s an emergency brake application that the crew can apply to stop the train as safely as possible, but that’s all they can do.

    I think what happened was that the engineer only used full service brake, not emergency brake, as resetting an emergency brake takes a very long time and costs a lot of trouble. The engineer just hit full service and just hope that the car can clear the road. As you can see in 1:09, the cab suddenly gets red, which is probably a light that probably indicated emergency brake activation, as I've seen from another comment.

  • @madrabbitt
    @madrabbitt 3 года назад

    I realize im watching this over 3 years later, but if that train had better warning, they could have possibly stopped sooner. That operator went to full emergency almost at the point he was crossing the road. If he had hit that button 10 seconds sooner, it wouldnt have hit. From his point of view, the car probably wasnt visible until his lower lights lit it up.
    This is more for first responders, but its useful to anyone else as well.
    1. Call the emergency number on the sign ASAP. Dont tell anyone else to do it, dont wait for dispatch to do it. YOU do it. Give the crossing ID #.
    2. Turn all the stuck vehicles lights on including the emergency flashers, especially at night.
    3. Single red (road flare) in the center of each track at least a mile away.
    4. If feasible with the number of people on scene, once a train is spotted, and one can SAFELY do so (the above video would have been safe) walk TOWARDS the train, ON THE SIDE OF THE TRACKS WHERE SAFE, crossing your arms over your head, or waving a RED light source above your head.
