Taking My House for a Walk on Grumpy Camels

- The Gabbra in Southern Ethiopia are nomadic pastoralists who live in a harsh arid region where camels are essential to their livelihood. Many are now settled and we were very fortunate to find one of the few groups who still had the knowledge to move their beautiful mat covered huts using specially trained camels. However, it had been a while since anyone had made a move so the camels were not at all happy about being roped into being roped up.

MUSIC: I write most the music for our more recent videos. If you like it let me know, I know it is not perfect, but I enjoy it!
Waaw it's my culture we are same Gabra or Oromo brothers. Salute from Somalia 🇸🇴☪️
Thank you. Amazing video. Every one is complaining about the treatment of the camels... I am a great horse and animal lover. I am not sure if I agree that this was @busive. The camels are not pets, they're also very (!) strong and can have a bad temper (they bite viciously if I remember correctly). They will also (it seems) not sit down voluntarily for them to load the camels (understandibly the camel doesn't FEEL like working). So holding the head to the front was about stopping the camel from biting chunks out of people and putting the leg in a sling was about getting them to sit down quickly (so the whole ordeal can be over quickly, which is best for the camel, too). The load also did not appear to me to be too heavy (camels are very strong). The load did not chafe them and was well-balanced.
I've been around a lot of horses when farriers put on horse shoes. Horses are considerably smaller and weaker animals than camels but can still become very dangerous (to people and themselves) if they put up a fight. The horse shoes are put on to protect (and therefore help) the horse. It isn't painful at all. However, many horses don't like being fiddled with that much so you need to use similar strategies to keep everyone safe (including the horse): you have to keep the head to the front quite tight so it can't whip around and bite the farrier. You also need to stabilize the legs (different strategies here) so it doesn't try to kick him with one of the other three legs while he's holding one up and putting the horse shoe on. Because the horse might fall if it tried, fall on the farrier and potentially hurt itself as well.
It didn't look pretty and camels sure know how to complain but it seemed to me everyone was concerned to make the process as smooth, quick and safe for the camels as possible...
camel really said "i don't feel like being domesticated today"
12:21 interesting that the bed fibres are strong enough to support the weight of a standing person.
Great footage and singing, thank you for going the extra mile to record and share this with us 🙏
That is real fantastic , i do remembered those days and the people hard works. Great jobs, for nomadic architecture and the team.
Camels are Great🐫🐪
I would be grumpy too being treated like that lol
Amazing, unique footage as always! Many thanks
It’s My Culture we work a lot to show our Unique Cultures to the world
Great stuff, thanks for the video
They look like Somalis. Saying hi from Djibouti 🇩🇯
Grumpy Camels sounds like it should be the name of a band 😝
Sometimes when I'm irritated with having to do something I make that same noise.
😂
Perhaps they overload the camel's back They raise huge long cry . Shamyaprasa,,31-5-23
In the desert heat the men cover themselves completely as if they are in winter. Great 31-5-23. Shamyaprasa

I am so glad my house doesn't need to be walked.!
Those camels are tired of that shit 😂
IT'S THEIR JOB. THEY KNOW THAT
My goodness, I’ve watched a lot of your videos but this one is even more stunning than all others. How often do they move? How long did it take to build this house? Is it a multi-family house? Do roof and walls consist of woven grass? The rope looks industrial and new?
And then the plastic chairs…..
Idk much about either animal but I have to agree in that it did indeed look like they knew what they were doing and were trying to get things done as quickly as possible. I did feel sorry for the camel though, he probably gets tired of it all😢
They were making the rope in the video.
Как интересно,я люблю такие смотреть.
Nice blog bro
Wow that door was so narrow I thought they locked themselves in the house while they were weaving it together lol
yes, just it is happiness
Wow I got tired watching them it looks so hard ,,these ladies are amazing
🎉God bless

You are fortunate your🐪🐪 don’t run away.
It’s amazing that they still wear the white clothes of the past unlike the nomads of my cukture today who wear second hand clothes from the west. My people have lost many aspects of the tradition horn African way of life.

Dear Mr. camera man, thank you for sharing the film. I have been eagerly expecting this footage as I have witnessed your endeavor for almost four days to film the incident. However, as a local guide, I am a bit disappointed that my contribution was not mentioned any where in the film. Besides what about another pastoral community whose village we had been to?
Hi Guyo, sorry, we meant to put thanks and links to you and Aden etc in the description. I will get onto this. We are all very behind in the whole editing thing. Life here in the UK has been a bit difficult for the past few months. Thank you so much for your help. Get my email address off Aden so we can check your details.
@GUYO GOLICHA Thank you for your contribution in bringing this film to us, And thanks to everyone in the video for sharing their way of life
Thank you so much for everything you did to make this happen - without local guides like you, getting video like this is impossible. I hope Nomad Architecture isn't just another EU/UK/US outfit taking advantage....
This people got 100% Somalian culture the house the way they travelling the clothes
Aww. Poor lazy beast
I would be really interested in how they weave the grass mats for the outside, you didn't ask that question by any chance?
Hi, we are in the process of filming a very similar group in Kenya and hopefully we will get the grass mat. We have a few clips, I might put them on the Patreon page as that is where we tent to put the odd bits and pieces. If you are really keen to find out DM me.
I think they did but cut it very short. it would have been smarter (I think) if we could see the whole episode.
Строят жилище как птицы вьют гнездо.
I think I'll stick with horses, then.
When is the new book ! And or reprint of the original available
I don't think we will reprint the old book. There are about 20 left if you are quick. But we have made an ebook which you can buy and we will send you a link. The new book is a good way off as I am waiting to get into parts of Russia and a couple of other countries before I have all the case histories. But thanks for asking.

Have you seen how we cultivate, farm and maintenance animals in America? I’m not sure if a lot of the commenters have seen dairy farm, pig farms or chicken farms… I digress.
I must say the camels look like they have large tails. lol. May i ask why are they moving?
They probably live nomadic lives
If you want the real absolute truth, because I asked them to! I do this because I am making a much more detailed study of their amazing mat covered houses and you cannot understand a nomadic building unless you see it in both its states, up and packed. But they do this for themselves when they need to move, and they were very happy to show me how it was done.
❤❤❤❤❤❤💗💗💗💗💗💗
Is this what happens when you cross a camel with a pheasant?
Dadkaan ma soomaalibaa
This is anfar or oromo but they said to camel same somalis language when they say sit dawn camel somalis they says juu and this people says juu surprise

I don’t think it’s pissed to be sitting down. It’s having an entire house put onto its back. 😢poor thing.
The camels don't like moving day
You are just an ignorant person who does not know anything about camels We are pastoral Bedouin societies since BC and we know very well the extent to which a camel can carry more than 150 kilograms and others exceed this a lot
Yes, they didn't need to put the whole house on One camels back!
Women build the houses
Same culture as the Somalis
They are abusing the camel. Poor thing.
No abuse, for su he is being domesticated,
I'd be pissed off if I was treated like that too. I'll never understand why so many nomadic cultures treat their animals like that. I've handled and ridden all kinds of animals, and I get the difference between sentimentalising your pets vs survival animals, but damn, it's just not necessary.
As an independent researcher I am supposed to be impartial to everyone and everything. Sometimes it is a hard task, but to be honest I have seen worse. But you set me wondering, are there any Camel whisperers?
It's how real humans live
This is how camels domesticated, there nothing wrong he does not understand it is his first time ir second time , after few time he will just sit and chew us food and only get up when they tell him, you are all complaining and probably think supermarkets produce milk
Covid Camels no wanna work 😮😅😢
Are these somalis?
I think there are a lot of closely related tribes in this region and I am not 100% sure they even identify with total clarity. They call themselves the Gabbra.
@@NomadArchitecturethey are Oromo clans who lived in Northern kenya and Ethiopia. They are pure oromo , they speak afaan oromo.
I think they are somalis
No
No, they are gebras one of clans of oromo
This cruel behavior
Injustice to hungry camele
Isso é maltrato de animal é desastroso
Stop this cruelty on animals 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Mean cruel to camel. I cannot watch. How would you like it if we did that to you?
