At least in AW's case, I think it was that the game didn't sell well enough to justify making a sequel, so Capcom just made a DLC to finish up the story that had ended on a cliffhanger. If it has sold better, they probably would have jumped at the opportunity to make it a full blown franchise.

Not disagreeing, but with KH3 it was because we all (me incl) bitched about the standard ending. For Asura’s Wrath it was because the director had this vision that it’d be cool if the core game ended on a cliffhanger that you’d then have to download addition content to finish, kinda like how some anime finish with an OVA or a movie like with Fullmetal Alchemist (2003). The boneheaded move was to charge for it.

Even if you never play Iki Island, you still have a complete story in the base game, the DLC just gives a ton of content that fleshes out Jin's backstory even more than it already was (and it was pretty damn fleshed out already), and can also give some new insight on things you did in the main campaign. Not to mention the Legends DLC they released for free, which tells the legends of the Ghosts that Jin based his new persona on in a multiplayer mode.
The likes of Tekken 3 and early resident Evil games did it ok but I think that just showed there was a market for alternative costumes. Horse armour is likely the point when it started to go horribly wrong but there was a lot of dlc before then that was of variable quality.
Seriously, I don’t know why gamers tolerate this stuff. I’ve been avoiding games with microtransactions for years. Being bombarded with constant monetization is a hard nope from me.
Actually, they sold NG+ as dlc for the Japanese release of the first turn based RGG game. It was included with the international release as part of the base game
Been having an on going debate about how games now are great visually most of the time. The graphics etc are sweet, but the program doesn't work. Like you're saying you're buying a premium product triple A and you have to wait for a patch you have to buy buy buy to get anywhere, that games are worse now than they use to be.
To me Valheim is one of the best looking modern games, due to the lighting and the consistent art style which reminds me of the textures from MGS and Vagrant Story, but with modern lighting which improves it massively. Minecraft with Ray tracing or shaders looks fantastic even with the original 16x16 textures and didn't need to spend millions on 3d artists. Unfortunately some gamers like those who only ever play CoD or FIFA or Skyrim won't even look at a game that isn't hyper-modern realistic, as if it's beta for any developer to not push the technology forward each time. That's still important for the industry in her general (and obviously i also enjoy great graphics too) but the game is in the game itself not the size of the textures. We're not ready for 150GB downloads anyway.
As far as I know Halo Infinite still doesn’t have a split screen or online campaign co-op yet in 2024. I only have 1 friend who still plays Halo, and we’ve done every game’s campaign co-op.
As a fan of Yakuza(like a dragon, what ever) the NG+ breaks me in a way that's hard to explain, there's something about the cynicism of the movement that disappoints me on several levels. I know RGG is a business, I know they've done not great things before in other areas of their games, but not rationally I just feel betrayed by a friend xD, I love these games.

It's not the only video game out there play a different one .. some of us don't care about dumping funds into games because it's our escape and it's decision to add certain unique benefits to the monetization. Take Assassin's Creed Valhalla .. you can enjoy the game in its entirety without dumping a penny into Helix credits for skins for weapons, companions or Ravens ... or !! You could spend money for the addition of customizing how you want and with the Opal system and Reda it's totally possible to get everything the Helix store offers without spending a penny by grinding out their implemented systems... I just think people love to complain because they're missing out due to their ability to funnel their money into it.

No, there's been Justice League's without him when he joined the Outsiders. Heck go full Steve Amell Green Arrow and basically make him evil Batman in a hood. Maybe let Red Hood have the crowl. Did they need Poision Ivy ... I wouldn't call Battlefront 2 the best Star Wars game of all time (It's Knights of the the Old Republic btw) but it is the most immersed I have ever been while playing a Star Wars game. I remember when that first big update to the game hit, and they added in more Clone Wars heroes, special units and a new mode. I remember charging through the Separatist ship as an Arc Trooper, and Anakin and Obi-Wan were leading us into battle. I remember covering their backs as droid after droid fell to jedi blades and droid blaster bolts. And that feels like a REAL memory. Like it actually happened. Like I really fought alongside Anakin and Obi-Wan. And that? That was truly special to me. The fact that they chose 2042 instead of that special experience is a crime.
I'm not sure if Yakuza: Infinite Wealth selling the player New Game Plus is more or less skeevy then The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling the player Hard Mode. I'm kinda leaning towards it being a bit better, because BotW also sold several other things that should have been part of the base game across multiple DLCs that rarely get price drops, some of which screws with the games own lore and world building. Not to mention all the things locked behind Amiibos (of which they always made way too few), including a bunch of iconic outfits and the entire pet mechanic.
Definitely. I know I for one, just don't bother with Epic Games Launcher. Had it once to play Fortnite briefly early on in its launch. Have since uninstalled it, I don't bother with their free games etc. They were a new platform to give Steam some competition, and then they ruined it by bringing the exclusivity you find on consoles to PC.
Lets not forget back in the 2000's when games like cod4 and farcry got free-to-play releases on steam that had ads in the loading screens. It would not have been all that annoying if it weren't included for people who had payed full price at launch. It's the kind of thing that makes a paying customer want to get a pirate copy of a game they already own a legitimate copy of.
Fun story, I bought a PS4 that came with Infinite Warfare. I tried the single player campaign, but didn't get through the first level. I didn't even touch Modern Warfare Remastered.
Battlefront 2 was only supported, when the Geonosis map dropped. Dice had a tendency to introduce a new mode and instantly abandoning it, despite the players asking for new maps. Then they shifted all their focus on the boring conquest mode, completely forgetting Galactic Assault, their core mode.

GTAV was something I wished I could have enjoyed. I played the single player to around half way point, until I tried the online. I did enjoy online a bit more, but the problem was... I didn't have any friends to play it with. Also, my english was terrible during that time and my social anxiety was throught the roof, so playing online and actually communicating with people was something I couldn't fully enjoy. I ended up dropping GTAV due to GTAV online. I don't remember why, but it just somehow killed the enjoyment for me. I wish I had the motivation to finish the storyline, but somehow, I still feel bit off somehow. Like the memory of you liking some flavor as a kid but growing up to hate the taste.
Regarding the microtransactions. You brought up Resident Evil. In fact its both, you can unlock stuff through excessive grinding or just buy it. Your choice really

11. Volition Inc - Everything. When it comes to stupid decisions, The one company that comes to mind is Volition Inc. They sold Saints Row 3 DLC as a full priced game that completely abandoned the primal fundamentals of their franchise, Wrote themselves into a corner by chasing a Mass Effect parody, Doubled down on even having the faint resemble to said franchise by sending the characters to hell. Which is where they chose to finish a major plot point set up in the DLC for saints row 2 within a side activity ( killing Dex a major story thread from Saints row 1/2) Decided after saints row to con fans by making agents of mayhem and introducing Johnny Gat as a playable character based off a finite Ending to Gat out of Hell. Then they were bought by Embracer and told fans they were making a gritty reboot to their beloved Saints row franchise. Only to create a Tik-Tok style tale about student debt in which you couldn't even rob stores or commit many crimes in their crime game. They then quad-tripled down by cutting the good content and replacing it with stupidity and to add the final flare of fuckery . It was Volition's Decision to abandon the one aspect of the reboot which would've been the introduction of fan favourite characters Johnny Gat and the crew in slew of a new cast of the most unlikable twits on the planet. They then lost their publisher millions which lead to their publisher making the stupid decision to partner up with a Saudi game company which screwed them out of billions and then got shut down. Only to resurface a few months later under the newly formed studio Shapeshifter games working on a BioShock- type project called clockwork revolution and as a finally screw you all. They stopped working on the Saints row 2 patch for PC and turned down all pleas for a remaster of the initial series even though Saints row 3 and the polarizing saints row 4 both got a remaster and a re-collection at full price. And that's not even touching on how they handled Red Faction after their open world marvel Guerrilla
It will probably be included in a later release. That is common practice. The Royal version of Final Fantasy XV was released a year later and included all of the DLC and added extras for $50.
I used to love Pokemon GO! until that update that killed the way we looked for Pokemon in the neighborhood. It went from being easy to find the Pokemon, to being a chore to get too, and I was done
The fact that people complete a game in the Yakuza series, THEN start the game again blows my mind, theyre usually ridiculously long, and infinite wealth is going to be longer than anything they have done before, so who even has it in them to then pay more money, just to play the extremely long game again 😅
Alan Wake 2 being digital only was definitely the choice of Epic not the choice of remedy and unfortunately it was either digital only or we don't get it at all and I would rather have it digital only vs not exist. I also prefer physical copies but eventually we're going to have to accept the reality that companies are just going to stop making physical copies all together at some point in the future. It is inevitable and there's nothing we can do about it. So it's either get used to the digital future or just stop gaming. Because no matter how badly we don't want it it's going to happen regardless and there's literally no way to stop it
I genuinely can t support the industry anymore. I buy like 1 game a year, MAYBE. Now they have a game they want us to buy and then pay premium currency for new game plus? Heart has left the ingredient list for making a successful game. It's so rare to buy a game that has everything included on release and not leave you wanting. Games are better than they've ever been. The video game industry has never been worse or more greedy.
The indie space is doing some good work if you're not adamant about 4k 120 fps and high production values. It's something I've only recently dipped my toes into but I'm really enjoying the smaller, throwback RPGs.

For me as a casual couch gamer of mostly non online games. New Game + is a huge fact and very important. If i like the game i really want another harder go at it. If that would be behind a paywall, i would probably skip the game in all and get something else. Not many games are that important or interesting that i can overlook their greed.
Funny thing with Palworld for me, im currently smashing AC Valhalla, and i saw Palworld and thought, wow, that looks like all my pokemon dreams come true, and downloaded it, but as i wanted to finish valhalla before i played it, ive just been seeing everyone absolutely rave about it and yet still force myself to finish this super long game before i experience it 😅
It doesn't exactly fit the list granted it's on franchises, but Marvel's Avengers should of been a honorable mention this was a game being published by the same people who routinely made Final Fantasy titles, and Nier Automata, not to mention the IP franchise should of been such an easy win for Square, but it kept screwing those fans over, at every possible opportunity pretty much relentlessly, and then to add fuel on the fire you see how great Guardian's Of The Galaxy and obviously Insomniac's Spider-Man franchise was and it's clear there's a market for superhero games from Marvel, and fantastic ways to execute doing them, none of which was a soulless looter with micro-transactions.

Good video overall, but I will call out one thing: the excuse for AW2's bad sales and forgive me if I am a bit harsh. This video is the second time I have heard this ridiculous narrative that not offering a physical copy made AW2 sell poorly. That opinion is not supported by a shred of fact and is only being propped up by the tiny community that insists on a physical copy that is overrepresented in the online community. Did I miss the Palworld physical game copies? Also, BG3 also did not have a physical offering until the game was released in a Deluxe Edition format AFTER the game had already sold millions of copies. So the very idea that a brilliant and incredibly well received game would be a financial failure for that reason is just ludicrous. More importantly, your comments were inaccurate in a critical way that DOES explain the poor sales: AW2 was NOT put on digital stores. It was put on ONE digital store: The EPIC store. Just like EVERY game exclusive to the EPIC storefront, it sold like crap because people don't like to be forced to use a factually inferior platform to buy their games without a some advantage like a discount. There are so many games and publishers who have experienced this problem at this point that it is almost a meme now and you are more than knowledgeable enough to have run into this information yourselves.

I cannot stand the fact that GTA 5 never got a drop of single player DLC, and lamen the fact that Rockstar only gave the DLC to GTA Online. They could've done so much with their IPs, but they - like every other company, only focused on what made them money. They had so much potential in the decades that saw GTA 5; they had so much potential for games like RDR2, as well, but instead chose to focus on GTA Online and the microtransactions they brought in
For me, Ubisoft foregoing Rayman to milk Assassins Creed was a terrible choice. The games either don't feel like Assassins Creed or felt hollow. Other than Valhalla(that still had effort put in, but didn't feel as much like an Assassins game), games after Unity felt lacking.
As years go by, I am starting to buy fewer and fewer games because of these scummy practices. It's hard to find a game worth its salt without some sort of loot box or micro transactions. Stories in games are lacking luster and just copy and paste.
I can admit with alan wake 2 that is the reason i have not got cant support digital only i will pick it up eventually but didn't want to support initial sales

I wouldn't call Battlefront 2 the best Star Wars game of all time (It's Knights of the the Old Republic btw) but it is the most immersed I have ever been while playing a Star Wars game.
I remember when that first big update to the game hit, and they added in more Clone Wars heroes, special units and a new mode.
I remember charging through the Separatist ship as an Arc Trooper, and Anakin and Obi-Wan were leading us into battle. I remember covering their backs as droid after droid fell to jedi blades and droid blaster bolts.
And that feels like a REAL memory. Like it actually happened. Like I really fought alongside Anakin and Obi-Wan. And that? That was truly special to me.
The fact that they chose 2042 instead of that special experience is a crime.
I'm not sure if Yakuza: Infinite Wealth selling the player New Game Plus is more or less skeevy then The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling the player Hard Mode.
I'm kinda leaning towards it being a bit better, because BotW also sold several other things that should have been part of the base game across multiple DLCs that rarely get price drops, some of which screws with the games own lore and world building. Not to mention all the things locked behind Amiibos (of which they always made way too few), including a bunch of iconic outfits and the entire pet mechanic.
AW2 not being on Steam probably hurt it more than no physical release tbh
Definitely. I know I for one, just don't bother with Epic Games Launcher. Had it once to play Fortnite briefly early on in its launch. Have since uninstalled it, I don't bother with their free games etc. They were a new platform to give Steam some competition, and then they ruined it by bringing the exclusivity you find on consoles to PC.
Lets not forget back in the 2000's when games like cod4 and farcry got free-to-play releases on steam that had ads in the loading screens. It would not have been all that annoying if it weren't included for people who had payed full price at launch. It's the kind of thing that makes a paying customer want to get a pirate copy of a game they already own a legitimate copy of.
Fun story, I bought a PS4 that came with Infinite Warfare. I tried the single player campaign, but didn't get through the first level. I didn't even touch Modern Warfare Remastered.

Battlefront 2 was only supported, when the Geonosis map dropped. Dice had a tendency to introduce a new mode and instantly abandoning it, despite the players asking for new maps. Then they shifted all their focus on the boring conquest mode, completely forgetting Galactic Assault, their core mode.
what an irony for call of duty..cod fans hated futuristic setting back in 2016 because it was not realistic enough...
now cod fans hated realistic modern warfare 3 reboot setting because it lacked variety in scenery...

GTAV was something I wished I could have enjoyed. I played the single player to around half way point, until I tried the online. I did enjoy online a bit more, but the problem was... I didn't have any friends to play it with.
Also, my english was terrible during that time and my social anxiety was throught the roof, so playing online and actually communicating with people was something I couldn't fully enjoy.
I ended up dropping GTAV due to GTAV online. I don't remember why, but it just somehow killed the enjoyment for me. I wish I had the motivation to finish the storyline, but somehow, I still feel bit off somehow. Like the memory of you liking some flavor as a kid but growing up to hate the taste.
Regarding the microtransactions. You brought up Resident Evil. In fact its both, you can unlock stuff through excessive grinding or just buy it. Your choice really

Battlefield V content was also scrapped for BF 2042, we never got Soviet Union faction with maps along with Normandy landings.
11. Volition Inc - Everything.
When it comes to stupid decisions, The one company that comes to mind is Volition Inc. They sold Saints Row 3 DLC as a full priced game that completely abandoned the primal fundamentals of their franchise, Wrote themselves into a corner by chasing a Mass Effect parody, Doubled down on even having the faint resemble to said franchise by sending the characters to hell. Which is where they chose to finish a major plot point set up in the DLC for saints row 2 within a side activity ( killing Dex a major story thread from Saints row 1/2) Decided after saints row to con fans by making agents of mayhem and introducing Johnny Gat as a playable character based off a finite Ending to Gat out of Hell. Then they were bought by Embracer and told fans they were making a gritty reboot to their beloved Saints row franchise. Only to create a Tik-Tok style tale about student debt in which you couldn't even rob stores or commit many crimes in their crime game. They then quad-tripled down by cutting the good content and replacing it with stupidity and to add the final flare of fuckery . It was Volition's Decision to abandon the one aspect of the reboot which would've been the introduction of fan favourite characters Johnny Gat and the crew in slew of a new cast of the most unlikable twits on the planet. They then lost their publisher millions which lead to their publisher making the stupid decision to partner up with a Saudi game company which screwed them out of billions and then got shut down. Only to resurface a few months later under the newly formed studio Shapeshifter games working on a BioShock- type project called clockwork revolution and as a finally screw you all. They stopped working on the Saints row 2 patch for PC and turned down all pleas for a remaster of the initial series even though Saints row 3 and the polarizing saints row 4 both got a remaster and a re-collection at full price. And that's not even touching on how they handled Red Faction after their open world marvel Guerrilla

It will probably be included in a later release. That is common practice. The Royal version of Final Fantasy XV was released a year later and included all of the DLC and added extras for $50.

I used to love Pokemon GO! until that update that killed the way we looked for Pokemon in the neighborhood. It went from being easy to find the Pokemon, to being a chore to get too, and I was done
It's easier than the older way now. They just show you the nearby PokéStop the Pokémon is currently spawned at.

The fact that people complete a game in the Yakuza series, THEN start the game again blows my mind, theyre usually ridiculously long, and infinite wealth is going to be longer than anything they have done before, so who even has it in them to then pay more money, just to play the extremely long game again 😅

Alan Wake 2 being digital only was definitely the choice of Epic not the choice of remedy and unfortunately it was either digital only or we don't get it at all and I would rather have it digital only vs not exist. I also prefer physical copies but eventually we're going to have to accept the reality that companies are just going to stop making physical copies all together at some point in the future. It is inevitable and there's nothing we can do about it. So it's either get used to the digital future or just stop gaming. Because no matter how badly we don't want it it's going to happen regardless and there's literally no way to stop it

Heart has left the ingredient list for making a successful game. It's so rare to buy a game that has everything included on release and not leave you wanting. Games are better than they've ever been. The video game industry has never been worse or more greedy.
The indie space is doing some good work if you're not adamant about 4k 120 fps and high production values. It's something I've only recently dipped my toes into but I'm really enjoying the smaller, throwback RPGs.

If i like the game i really want another harder go at it.
If that would be behind a paywall, i would probably skip the game in all and get something else.

Some people still don't have internet good enough to download games so of course being digital only hurt Alan Wake 2.
Funny thing with Palworld for me, im currently smashing AC Valhalla, and i saw Palworld and thought, wow, that looks like all my pokemon dreams come true, and downloaded it, but as i wanted to finish valhalla before i played it, ive just been seeing everyone absolutely rave about it and yet still force myself to finish this super long game before i experience it 😅
It doesn't exactly fit the list granted it's on franchises, but Marvel's Avengers should of been a honorable mention this was a game being published by the same people who routinely made Final Fantasy titles, and Nier Automata, not to mention the IP franchise should of been such an easy win for Square, but it kept screwing those fans over, at every possible opportunity pretty much relentlessly, and then to add fuel on the fire you see how great Guardian's Of The Galaxy and obviously Insomniac's Spider-Man franchise was and it's clear there's a market for superhero games from Marvel, and fantastic ways to execute doing them, none of which was a soulless looter with micro-transactions.
I couldnt agree more about Battlefront 2. Ive never had more fun in a Star Wars game than I did in BF2 running around as Papa Palpatine and shicking thr s*** out of everything that moved.

Good video overall, but I will call out one thing: the excuse for AW2's bad sales and forgive me if I am a bit harsh. This video is the second time I have heard this ridiculous narrative that not offering a physical copy made AW2 sell poorly. That opinion is not supported by a shred of fact and is only being propped up by the tiny community that insists on a physical copy that is overrepresented in the online community. Did I miss the Palworld physical game copies? Also, BG3 also did not have a physical offering until the game was released in a Deluxe Edition format AFTER the game had already sold millions of copies. So the very idea that a brilliant and incredibly well received game would be a financial failure for that reason is just ludicrous.
More importantly, your comments were inaccurate in a critical way that DOES explain the poor sales: AW2 was NOT put on digital stores. It was put on ONE digital store: The EPIC store. Just like EVERY game exclusive to the EPIC storefront, it sold like crap because people don't like to be forced to use a factually inferior platform to buy their games without a some advantage like a discount. There are so many games and publishers who have experienced this problem at this point that it is almost a meme now and you are more than knowledgeable enough to have run into this information yourselves.
Thus is a much better format keep up the good work

I cannot stand the fact that GTA 5 never got a drop of single player DLC, and lamen the fact that Rockstar only gave the DLC to GTA Online. They could've done so much with their IPs, but they - like every other company, only focused on what made them money. They had so much potential in the decades that saw GTA 5; they had so much potential for games like RDR2, as well, but instead chose to focus on GTA Online and the microtransactions they brought in
For me, Ubisoft foregoing Rayman to milk Assassins Creed was a terrible choice. The games either don't feel like Assassins Creed or felt hollow. Other than Valhalla(that still had effort put in, but didn't feel as much like an Assassins game), games after Unity felt lacking.
