Studio Studeo is een video cursus over de verschillen in het gebruik van de Nederlandse taal tussen Holland en Vlaanderen. De cursus is gemaakt door Tom Faes (uit België) and Bart de Pau (uit Nederland).
De lessen zijn gericht op buitenlanders die Nederlands leren, om hen bekend te maken met de verschillen. Gelukkig, zijn de verschillen maar erg klein. Wie Nederlands leert in het ene land zal geen problemen ondervinden in het andere. Het is als UK Engels en VS Engels. Het verschil is het accent en een paar woorden.
Het hoofddoel van de lesson is het uitleggen van de betekenis van Vlaamse woorden. Dit zal degene die Nederlands leert helpen om de gesprekken met Belgen beter te begrijpen. De cursus legt uit hoe iets genoemd wordt in Nederland en wat men hiertegen in Vlaanderen zegt.
Dit zal helpen om misverstanden te voorkomen !
De woorden die in deze les behandeld worden: appelsien, fruitsap, beenhouwer, frieten, patat, frietkot, ajuin, spuitwater, plat water, kraantjeswater, groentjes, goesting.
Attentie: om het niet te complex te maken, en gezien het doel van de cursus; is de nuance weggelaten. Uiteraard is het niet zwart-wit: het is niet zo dat 100% van de Nederlanders het ene woord gebruikt, terwijl 100% van de Belgen de Vlaamse “vertaling” gebruiken. Het kan goed zijn dat men de Vlaamse variant ook in de zuidelijke Nederlandse provincies hoort. Even goed kan ook de “Nederlandse variant” gewoon in België gebruikt worden. Voor het doel van de cursus (het voor mensen die Nederlands als vreemde taal/NT2 leren makkelijker maken om gesprekken met Vlamingen te begrijpen) is het niet noodzakelijk om het gebruik per locatie en frequentie van elk woord gedetailleerd te behandelen.
Studio Studeo is a video course which deals with differences in the use of the Dutch language between the Netherlands and the Dutch speaking part of Belgium (Flanders).
The course consists of 10 lessons, which will be published once per 2 weeks on the learndutch.org youtube channel between September 2014 and January 2015. The course will start on 10th of September (introduction) and 11th of September (lesson 1).
The course is made by Tom Faes (from Belgium) and Bart de Pau (from the Netherlands).
The lessons are aimed at foreigners who learn Dutch, to make them aware of the differences. Fortunately, the differences are just very small: if you learnt Dutch in one country, you will have absolutely no problem to use it in the other. It is like UK English vs US English. There is a difference in the accent and a few words.
The main goal of the course is to explain the meaning of Flemish words. It will help the Dutch learner to understand conversations with Belgians better. The course explains how something is called in the Netherlands and how it is called in Flanders.
This will help to avoid misunderstandings!
Attention: for the ease of the understanding of the course we left away the nuance. Of many words, it is not true that 100% of the Dutch use one word, and 100% of the Belgians use the Flemish translation. It can be, that in the southern provinces of the Netherlands you hear the “flemish” word, while the Belgians could also use the “dutch” word. The goal of our course (to make Dutch learners understand conversations with Belgians better) does not require to make long discussions about the use of each word in which locations/frequency.

Wow. As an Afrikaans speaker from South Africa, amazing that I could follow both Dutch and Flemish! Ons kan met julle lekker praat!
I am American and studied Flemish Dutch in Belgium for a few years and later self-studied Afrikaans on the Internet in OFM Radio's chatroom for 10 years and listen to Radio Sonder Grense on the Internet. The dialect in Antwerp, Belgium is not far different from Afrikaans, but I was only in Antwerp one year and stayed three years in Ghent, but only studied two years in Ghent. I've had Afrikaans words as my car's number plate number a couple of times.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but why does Bart say "Sinaasappel" (Orange) and then proceed to hold up a mandarin?

In English, "orange" tends to refer to all similar fruits, including mandarins, satsumas and tangerines. I believe it is the same in Dutch.

He definitely made a mistake. A tangerine/mandarin is called a "mandarijn" in Dutch and an orange is a "sinaasappel." At least that's how I say it as a Dutch person myself
gelukkig bestaat er ook de versnelknop. Tussen de 1.25 en 1.50 is voldoende snelheid 2.0 vind ik weer te snel en de muziek klinkt dan ook hysterisch. Ik vind het echt een droog filmpje vooral de droge toon waarmee ze praten.

Thank you so much! as someone learning Dutch in Belgium it is quite difficult to determine the difference, when all the learning material is in Dutch and everybody around is speaking Flemish, Now I have a better idea what the difference entails.
+Tisbeth Salinas Remember that Flemish isn't a language, but a collection of dialects. And yes, it's very common and culturally acceptable to speak dialect in Flanders, more so than in the Netherlands. I can really understand that it must be hard to adapt to Belgium linguistically speaking.

This is so cool! I'm Swedish with a little knowledge in German, and English of course and with this slow speaking is easy for me to understand Flemish. In everyday speaking I barely understand anything.

I'm actually not learning dutch, but I'm interested in languages in general. I speak german and was looking around for some videos to see how the two languages compare to each other. I found this lighthearted and even funny at times, with clear pronunciation and very helpful transcripts both in english and dutch.
Cool to see how much one could understand from knowing german alone (when dutch is spoken slowly, of course)
By the way, I met a belgian guy once and he told me the themes in the jokes are always that the Dutch are cheap and the Belgian and dumb, so that checks out with the video! Here's the joke he told me:

I just know now, that 'kursus' in Indonesian come from 'cursus' in Dutch!!! Wow at least, being a dutch colony for many years has many advantages for learning dutch! (It's easier and faster to learn, cause dutch seems like a mix from English, Indonesian, and German for me :))
Vlaams is een Nederlands dialect. Nederlands is een taal die in heel veel dialecten wordt gesproken. zoveel dat men van "het" nederlands eigenlijk niet kan spreken. Vlaanderen is een kleiner oppervlak dan nederland maar het telt bijna dubbel zoveel dialecten dus "het" vlaams is al helemaal een fabeltje. sterker nog, Vlaams lijkt het meeste op het oorspronkelijke nederlands omdat de nederlandse taal daar ook is ontstaan, in het grootste deel van nederland spraken ze toen fries of nedersaksisch. het is gewoon een leugentje om vlamingen zich meer anders te laten voelen dan een "Hollander" wat enkel een inwoner is van de provincie noord en zuid holland. in friesland en brabant word ik ook "hollander" genoemd. belgen bestaan niet en nederlanders en vlamingen hebben meer gemeen dan je denkt. als we naar manier van leven kijken begint vlaanderen voor mij al in brabant.
Fun fact: "nederland" en "belgië" betekenen hetzelfde: Lage landen. het een komt van het germaans, de andere van het latijn.

I dont learn Dutch, but just wanted to know the differences. I can understand most of Dutch because I am German and grew up hearing a dialect (Plattdeutsch [low german] which is pretty similar to dutch, but I got surprised, that flemish sounds even more like the dialect I know. Thats so cool, i could understand that so good😁

Loved the vid. I'm learning Dutch in Belgium and I have the impression that Flemish people do say slager and sinaasappelsaap.
Also if you want to sound Flemish just use a lot of French words in the diminutive: ça vakes, mercikes, salutjes... Or turn French verbs into Dutch verbs: Marcheert dit ? Etc. I'm sure there are more examples.
I find your videos very helpful and are a great addition to my duolinguo practice, but this one seems to have the bass set to very high and its hard to understand clearly on my speakers.
Hi Bogdan, you listen on laptop (internal or extra speakers?) or tablet, phone? I always test the sound on several devices - and try to find the settings that fit best on all; to me it seems the bass is much lower than in the other videos... Looking forward to your reaction.
learndutch.org Hello, I am using a pc with a 5.1 system and at the low notes my woofer is is very loud. Its not as bad as I don't understand but it makes it difficult to listen to the exact pronunciation. Its worth mentioning that my bass is not set very high its barely under 50%. Honestly It might be because of the dutch sounds and I should just set my bass a bit lower as I noticed my bass hums allot during your videos :). Thanks for the quick response and keep doing what you are doing its helping me allot. Doei!

ek is een afrikaner en vind flaams bietjie makliker om te verstaan. moenie van julle familie in s afrika vergeet nie hoor. my van is du bruyn waar kom ek vandaan?
Heel interessant dit xD alleen dat meervoud, bijvoorbeeld: Groentjes, lijkt net alsof je tegen een klein kind praat ''Eet je groentjes op'' x) Maar toch zijn van alle woorden de Nederlandse en Vlaamse varianten mooi en uniek op hun eigen manier! Ik wist niet eens dat het woord sinaasappel verband had met China xD Dus je leert ook interessante feiten over je eigen taal die je nog niet weet. Maar inderdaad toen ik in België was hadden de mensen die Vlaams spraken geen moeite om mijn Nederlands te verstaan en ook andersom niet x) De verschillen zijn te klein daarvoor en sommige mensen weten ook het andere variant, ook al gebruiken ze het niet waar ze wonen.

de bedoeling van de reeks - zoals aangegeven - is niet zozeer om de nuance bij elk woord te geven; synoniemen worden ook gebruikt en het is nooit zwart-wit: dat alle NL'ers X zeggen en alle Belgen Y. Het doel is te wijzen op de mogelijk andere betekenis/woordgebruik in het andere land: want jus d'orange zul je nooit in belgie horen, wel in NL; en fruitsap (in betekenis van sinaasappelsap) zul je nooit in NL horen en wel in BE; en daarbovenop gebruikt men natuurlijk in beide landen sinaasappelsap.

heus niet erg als iemand vercrackt jus d'orange uitspreekt diegene raar aankijkt hoor. Iemand die nederlands leert kent heus dat franse woord wel. Het overmatig gebruik van Engelse termen in het Nederlands vind ik misselijkmakend

Written dutch can be ok.... but spoken the nederlands dutch is very difficult to understand, but the belgian dutch is a little bit easier.

In Nederland zeggen we tegenwoordig meer sinaasappelsap dan jus d'orange, ten minste, de regio waar ik woon (randstad). Het pak sap in je hand zegt genoeg. :)
+Glenn de Groot In België kan je ook sinaasappelsap zeggen, jus d'orange daarentegen echt niet. Daarnaast kan je ook appelsiensap zeggen. Ik laat het je maar effe weten ;)
Ik dacht dat men in België ook vaker 'frituur' zegt in plaats van 'frietkot'.
in het algemeen hebben wij echt niets tegen Nederlanders, zij zijn just symphatiek. Natuurlijk alleen als ze geen moppen maken over ons.
