- These Pumpkin Steam Buns have a bright yellow golden hue. During Chinese New Year, we like to cook food that represents good luck and prosperity. Since the colour of these Pumpkin Steam Buns look like gold, I thought it would be a good idea to share these Steam Pumpkin Buns during Chinese New Year. These Pumpkin Buns are light, soft and fluffy.

Dry ingredients:

Thank you for the tip about not opening the lid for 5 min to avoid shrinking skin! I failed many times when I made buns like this, the skin shrinked and wasn't smooth. Warm wishes from the USA, Ruyi!😊🙏

To me it's ok to proof longer.

Hi Ruyi, I'd tried your recipe and it's yummy. Since I've some blended orange peels puree leftover, can I substitute the sweetened orange peels puree for pumpkin puree? Is the amount of orange skin puree and sugar the same? Do I need to reduce the brown sugar? Please reply asap. Wanted to try out. Thanks
Hello 👋 I’d start 80ml orange purée first. Then check whether the dough is dry or wet. As for sugar you can use the same or reduce slightly depending on how sweet you want the buns to be. Hope it goes well 😃

Hello 👋 thanks so much for trying and happy it went well! I’ve not tried with baking. It’s all purpose flour so if you bake after it cools down it might not be soft. Maybe you can change to bread flour.

Hi I used plain flour in my recipe so self raising flour should be ok. The only things is self raising flour might have baking soda so it might cos yellow specks. But the buns are yellow in colour so maybe it might not be a problem.

Hi for this recipe use all purpose flour. I tried with pao flour for this pumpkin recipes the texture become sticky and not so smooth
Wow! The buns look light and fluffy. I'd love to make this but I can't use ingredients like egg or milk. Is egg yolk included in the recipe for taste, texture or binding purpose? What happens if I were to omit it?
Yes it’s very soft and fluffy! I added the egg yolk for taste. So yes you can omit it but need to add more liquid. Egg yolk is about 25 ml so I would substitute with about 20 grams pumpkin purée.
