I don't think Analogue has much to worry about, yet. The 3d buyers are mainly interested in having carts as an option, 4k scaling, and a smaller minority interested in whatever CRT emulation gets implemented. This R2 console is definitely more versatile, but it doesn't do anything of those things mentioned above. The 3d will still be for the n64 enthusiast.
He should do one for each mainstream console: NES, SNES, Genesis (with support for 32X, Sega CD), Saturn, N64, if the demand is there. Maybe even Neo Geo?
Analog already did most of those, but their consoles costed $250 or more, and prices havent dropped the 5 or so years they've been out. Some were discontinued altogether.
@@brandogg something in the style of the original mega drive would be really cool. but tbh: I take anything compact and slick over the eye sore that have been pre-built misters before…
That PSOne design language is pretty snazzy! I've always liked the look of that and always considered it one of the best console redesigns ever. So I think evoking that machine was a good idea. At some point, I may try to put an SBC in a PSOne shell. The PSOne board is basically an SBC anyway.
I took the leap and went for dual ram back when Saturn core required it as I didn't want that fomo and felt it was going to be a good safety net to make my mister as compatible as possible going forward, I know we are nearing the end, but even the "early access" to Saturn felt like it was worth it, now having access to jaguar I feel happy with my purchase
This time last year I knew very little about MiSTer, slightly dismissed it tbh. Roll forward to today and I now own three MiSTers and plan to pick up all Taki’s products. The reason for multiple is that Mister Pi has encouraged me to design products for the system so big thanks in particular Taki Udon for bringing this product to market at that amazing price. And thanks to the whole community especially the devs!
I was part of batch 1, plan to get this, Im so excited because I like having something simplified and I have a lot of friends who are interested but might be turned off by the design of the regular mister they want something more plug and play
Yes a Saturn design case would be mine dream too! I’ll probably get this PS design one too. Was tempted to get his Mister Pi but I really wanted a more consolized design.
Main thing im wondering about is if it's possible to somehow plug in other snac adapters like snes or n64. I use the ps1 snac a lot on my current setup but would really not want to be limited to that when it comes to original controllers
I have several MiSTers and 95% sure I'll grab this as well because I love the design. However it may be more wise to hold off knowing the way Taki works I'm sure he has several different versions and revisions planned unbeknownst to us. The PVM AIO console is what I'm guessing will be next (which will be much more likely around $300+ guarateed. Then most likely the handheld I'll guess at $250 minimum. Might be worth thinking ahead what release fits each of us the most instead of buying each release. Seems like Terasic manufacturing plant in Taiwan in for a world of hurt for the foreseeable future :)
That is so cool if all digital and analogue ports would be on one board and I don't need to use any adapters and extra cables. I would buy it just for the composite out. And my Mister is single RAM.
My misteraddons build is a single ram with io analog pro board, but i just received a MiSTer Pi over the holidays that will be my dual ram. Just havent set it up yet to test. Only reason i went dual though was because i wanted a 2nd unit anyway so i figured i may as well go dual for future proofing. The single ram on saturn works so well now though that i'd have no concern or fomo about this Ps1 build being single ram. Seems like it covers 98% of use cases. As far as choosing ps1 to model after, i do feel that the ps1 controller is one of the most versatile. In a pinch, I'd be fine using those for basically all cores aside from genesis, saturn, and n64. So it will be nice for times where i dont want various dongles hanging all over the place.
ps1 controller ports will only work for the ps1 core (because it uses SNAC). you'll have to use USB or Bluetooth controllers for any other cores. technically I guess there could be a way to internally intercept the SNAC port but who knows
It looks pretty cool, will you be reviewing it? I'm holding out for the flagship and the handheld, but if this one gets a small screen add-on I might have to go for it.
will it have the same features as a triple stack? this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for: slick smol mister. was hoping pregnant Arnie was more than vaporware, but this is really cool.
not the biggest fan of the psx controller ports at the front (would have preferred 2 usb) but that’s what makes me upgrade from the pocket dock to mister.
@@VideoGameEsoterica totally, and I can have the smol 8bitdo dongle at the backside ports without much hassle and messy nest of cables. so it’s a major plus for those who enjoy that kind of authenticity and hardly a downside for us “normies”
This is awesome. Diving into MiSTer is definitely a little intimidating if you aren't tech savvy or are new to the emulation/retro scene. Anything to make it easier and cheaper, I am all for. Now hopefully we are that much closer to Taki's MiSTer handheld which I have been impatiently awaiting for a while now...
@VideoGameEsoterica yeah I like the Analogue Pocket but sometimes I really just want to play Saturn Bomberman on my portable and the pocket is never going to manage that. Also I much prefer the form factor that has been teased to the original Gameboy style that is honestly slightly too small for my hands.
Hey, it actually looks pretty nice. Idk, I'm happy with my standard Mister FPGA sandwich, but now that I see how slick and cool this one looks, I might grab it eventually.
This one might be a skip for me, since I've got too many MiSTers already, and not enough sets of eyes/hands. But I do know somebody who's been waiting for something just like this.
This is really cool and I definitely would have bought one if I didn't grab their initial release stuff. Although not a huge fan of it not having dual ram. It's also really smart that they're releasing this ASAP so they can beat the analogue 3D. I have a feeling there's going to be a huge amount of attention from the dev community on that device as soon as it releases.
I'd love to see a version of this with more generic SNAC-based ports on the front. For example how cool would it be to have essentially a built-in SNAX64, and just expose the "HDMI" ports on the front of the console? Then we could connect original controllers via bliss-style adapters directly. Maybe he could even sell a range of modded controllers with HDMI plugs on them so you don't even need an adapter! I'd buy a ton of them. 🎮
The one game to test on this. Would be Gundam battle assault 2. No matter what software emulator this game is played on. This game in one way or another crashes.
Having just gotten the Mister Pi (don't go with 4PX/cheap shipping, it takes forever) I'll stick with that for now. But I'm interested to see how the eject button works on this.
I guess the only downside (for now) is that you're locked into PSX stuff for SNAC -- it doesn't seem to have a user port. This from me, someone who presently doesn't use it. 😅 Single-RAM user here. Analog video is too important for me, and as you said, very little needs/would need dual.

If the PSX controllers are actually connected via SNAC, I wonder how Taki is going to handle the MiSTer menus... With this trying to hit the "I just want a retro gaming console" market, having to have a separate usb controller is going to be seen as pretty janky.

It’s def been a welcome addition to the ecosystem
Analogue is probably crapping their pants because this is like half the price of the Analogue 3D and it does more out of the box

My main MiSTer is dual RAM with the newer IO direct board. Just seemed to make sense since I was freeing up that other slot.

He should make a thin ITX form factor MiSTer Pi.
I’ll have a vid on a new ITX build soon
