- In this video , I show how to properly clean and lubricate a motorcycle drive chain. Maintenance and fresh oil for any style of custom motorcycle , it is very important to do chain maintenance on regular service intervals. Café racers, bobber, brat style, choppers, mopeds and scooters all need good oily chains for proper performance and a long life of motorbike chains.
Send me mail! - whenever there is enough stuff in the mail bag to put together a subscriber mail reading and shout-out, I will put up a video for you guys! Thanks to those of you who already sent me letters and gifts !
Send me stuff to use in videos !
Yes- I actually do send stickers out to those who contribute bits, parts, stuff for my projects and pretty much everyone who I talk about or thank in my videos. If you want to send me bike stuff, things for potential use in videos or tools to review etc. (or even just cash donations ! )
mail them to me:

Yes- you can just buy Ichiban Moto stickers - they are on ebay !
I substituted the iron bolt for my wedding ring ..
The chain on my BMW K100 is now 18k gold plated and totally rust free 👍🏼
SPORK!!! Yes! If I could give this 10 thumbs up I would.
This video's too legit. You gotta tone it back a notch.
Kyle Whybrew well this would be a safety concern
I went through few of your videos and I must say this is the one of the best DIY channel for bikes.....very nice work.
+kjohnstanley diy is the best way to get things done :)
I really hate all these videos, but I keep watching
The planet loves a bit of intelligent recycling. Excellent info.
Amazing, I think I will send a 'link' to a friend of mine, who may send it on to another friend...sort of chain mail...
+Triumph Rascal (Triumphrascal) make sure to cut and paste the master link
Is that an imperial spork or a metric spork?
+gratedcarrot it's an SAE spec spork
HAHAHA! Voltage grade assembly tape! I love your channel. Don't know how I never found it before.
Thanks for watching and sharing !
Thumbed up this video before it uploaded
+Arlind Sadikaj now that is bad ass!
You should do something on replacing blinker fluid..
My favorite is cylinder boring and honing including oversizing the piston. Great stuff.
a top end refresh makes everyone smile
Great tip, not had the chance to use electrickity to derust things yet, will have to look harder. Badass as usual.
Didn't you have a dead short across the battery when you submerged the connections in your electrolysis solution?
Wow the rust removal process was interesting
I need to oil the chain on my variomatic scooter one of these days. Great vid !
Excellent! Where do I pick up the chain detergent? My local Nickel Town supplier was out, said he sold out about 10 minutes after you posted your video.
+80sDweeb They were out of Nickle Town chain lube too, really brought Me down..
you are the very intelligent motorcycle mechanic the true badass.
grand master zen speaks :D
Another Great Tutorial, my bike maintenance skills are really coming along nicely thank you, I would eagerly give you two thumbs-up if I had any left after I tried your corn dog nuke :-) bloke down the pub said they will grow back.
mmm. corndogs. i should do more cooking videos
I like your rust removing process ,Nice
feeling fun when i watch your videos!
This channel was recommended to me.... It is bad ass so I laughed and subscribed.
+Hookemups thank you for subscribing and sharing ! :D
Ive done some electrolysis following your rusty parts video. I'm using a 12V 1Amp charger I found laying around to supply the energy. Jokes aside how much Amps and volts did you use to clean that chain?
Awesome job Ichiban!
Timages was right!!! You are a bike Doctor! That's genius how you used science to clean that chain! It was like brand new!!!
you can't argue with science ! :D
+Ichiban Moto sure can't but it's cool how you applied it!!!
thanks for watching. youtube tells me that only 5.8% of my viewers are female :(
+Ichiban Moto no problem!! 5%?? That's better than some motovloggersa i know! Plus I wouldn't have found you without Tim who mentioned your DIY videos
I got rid of my chain and replaced it with string.
baaadasssss
baaadasssss
+Boodysaspie Well, I would have used to the chain to hold my trousers up. THAT'S baaaadasssss.
+InTheNameOfJustice folks... we have just witnessed the fashion genius of the next etsy millionaire !
Ichiban Moto
Aw shucks Ichiban. Thank you kind sir.
So satisfying to watch. Badass.
excellent video im going to try this on my chain thanks.
How to piss off any motorcycle rider? Tell them to lube their chain in WD-40.
+Octometh The chain MFR's actually suggest that, to clean the chain before lubing. A bike messenger I knew put 50K, that's right 50,000 miles on a stock chain cleaning it with WD40 each night after work (he rode all day delivering mail). He lubed it with chain lube after. Shit actually worked..I wasn't crazy enough to bother..
Oldbmwr100rs I said lube with WD-40.
Dear Ishiban Moto, thanks for the great video. May I ask if this chain was a o-ring one and how many miles left to go did ti have?
+PARTIREper.it no o-ring, this was a 40 year old chain with tens of thousands of rusty miles on it
+Ichiban Moto thanks for the quick reply. So, was the video intended to show how to restore an old chain rather than buy a new one, or to show how to clean a new chain with an alternative method?
+PARTIREper.it basically how to clean rust and grime from an old chain and apply new lube
That tape is only rated for AC voltage. DC tape is green. Glad it worked out for you though.
+Ryan Megill I need to be more careful in the future
Dude, if you sandblast it will not cause premature wear. The little sand will go in between the links and keep cleaning the chain
at least for the next 10000 kilometres as it is rotating on the bike, only you have to use natural oil for lubrication after that, 15-56/89 pure olive oil extract will do it. Do not try on o ring chain tho. Bad ass video and I love your tools man.
Awesome ! I am still wondering if this enhanced solution would still be efficient on Portland corroded metal parts.
+Sergio Desmo I heard that Portland rust is considered very sacred authentic curated patina in Portland. Hey Portland, send me some rust to test for Sergio!
Hello, wouldn't replacing the chain be more cost effective and reliable? With time the chain will stretch and the danger of chain breakage or snapping off the sprokets increase exponentially. Also won't hammering the chain form lips on the link's edge and disrupt the chain's proper functioning? Btw good job and keep up the good work.
I would rather refurbish, renew or rejuvenate
Ichiban Moto I respect your environmentally friendly attitude.
Great tutorial for showing hands on method, but I find it much easier to just use Nickel Town 3 in 1 Chain Restorer
+toolbox990 most of us can not afford the fancy stuff
damn so amazing . You save all filthy chain turn into new brand look.
What kind of camera are you using? Is that a Nickle Town Customs action cam?
+Gims110 nothing that awesome. it's just an old garage sale camera with a video mode. I do want an action cam so I can start motovlogging tho !
Can I use my old Harley as my sacrificial anode, and since its a bit big should I use AC current?
Thanks in advance
+Triplescanada sure, but you do need DC current
How do I clean the belt drive on my harley please help also can you clean timing belts and plastic/rubber weld new teeth to belts?
Se eu entendi bem vc usou apenas uma pequena bateria para criar energia para hidrólise?
This is great, but my bike has shaft drive. Can you advise how to remove this or or show me where to find a link?
+TheMightyAntar I will do a shaftie video the next time one comes through the shop/
Might wanna add that this method (minus the electrolosis) would damage o-ring type chains due to the rubber in them. Otherwise, rad rust removing technique!
really nice video...petrol can work??
check your chain, if it is of the o-ring variety, the petrol will eat the o's
Hi! An old Go-Kart mechanic once told me that he used to boil chains in Molykote so the little lubricant solids such as graphite and MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) snuck in the little spaces between the rollers. Have you tried this? Would it work?
+Tomás García I don't see why not
so the sacrifarcical bolt turned into a new chain?
Do you think I could use a couple car batteries to speed up the electrolysis machine?
you risk hydrogen embrittlement when you use high current. anyways, you can use multiple anodes and/or more soda crystal to speed up electrolysis.
+jonno85uk Hydrogen embrittlement is not a problem as long as you stress relieve within 4 hours with your favorite beverage. :)
+PistnRods I would think so, give it a go and let us know !
have you shown how to clean rust inside your tank yet?
badassery!!!
That was impressive!
why are you using for the hydrolysis of the battery, not the power supply 9 ~ 12 Volt?
low voltage and amperage for proper electrolysis
is there a way of refreshing/unclogging a dirt bike carburetor that's been sitting for a while without taking it apart?? ultrasonic?
+MANUEL LARA Carbs should be completely disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, inspected and properly reassembled and adjusted. There are many very tiny ports and circuits within carburetors requiring a proper job.
Would this method work on a Harley belt drive Mr Itchy????👍🏻
+ninjanelly350 I hate rusty belts !
The white vinegar is great but my bike smells weird being how I soaked the entire lower half of my bike
Why didn't you remove the chain and soak it separate from the bike?
wow that smart
nice chain is like new!! can i do this with dirtbike chain or its different?? thanks
what kind of dirt?
a motocross chain
Ichiban Moto a motocross chain
Nice stuff my friend,
next time save yourself a 9v batt, you should of used your speaker wire ,jimmy into electric socket, then onto chain & bolt, just like in the video removing dents from gas tank.
+Dirt Days NZ that might make quick work of it !
I wanted to see the state of the sacrificial bolt :(
+FlakeyMojoMusic it's just a rusty mess
any advice in how to remove the messy thick wax that comes on a new chain?
just use paraffin ( kerosene ) and don't use gasoline if it is a o-ring chain
Thumping the seized links with a hammer would be tempting for anybody, But if your going to use that electrolysis bath, Surely that would have freed them up anyway ? That said, If you kept going for another day with it could you have saved using the distilled vinegar ?
I always thump my link
i dont have any sporks, is there a substitute? or can i make my own spork?
+Nomine Vacans I would think so.. just make sure you calibrate it
That was absolutely Bad Ass! :)
+MidwestMotoRider a well maintained bike will last so much longer
and cause premature wear... that was great!
+Gonzalo Soto with proper care, they can last for decades !
I recommend this Channel to all the Guys I "HATE"...!!!!! LOL...!!!!! keep up the Great work...!!!!!
+Jack Assman thanks for sharing the videos .. I was hoping someone would see them
Excellent
Can i send you my rear shocks? I want the springs cut to lower the rear and of my xs850. Thanks
+Brandin Tatro absolutely !
How long can i expect a 9v battery to last with this type of use?
+Martin Brown not more than a dozen uses. maybe less. probably.
+Ichiban Moto You can get as many as 15 uses from them if you get the ones that say Heavy Duty on them.
I was able to clean two 520 chains and it still had enough power to run an electric groin tension massage device for a good 30 minutes.
My 9V battery has lasted for at least ten years and hundreds of uses! Sometimes it needs some filling up though but that’s no problem, just top the battery up with some battery charge fluid. The red one is best but most expensive. You might need to drill a hole in the battery to to make it refillable. 👍
@PDumky tone it down a bit.. its gotta sound at least somewhat believable...
"These links, I need to break them loose". **Picks up a hammer**
+Saulo Silva I didn't have a link tamper handy
Excelent. Just subscribed.
Regards.
Is that a bag of bud in that ziploc? On the table lmao i bet it is your way to funny
+zerg232 oh, that's one of my prescriptions
Ichiban Moto lmao i got one too. Winning! Love the videos keeep them coming
Thanks great video cheers
Where do you buy your chain detergent from?
+kaiok1777 nickel town !
+ in the name of justice ;
Ya that's Baaadaaass all rite.
My Grand ma knitted me one for X-Mass. Hell, I got to put it on whenever I go to see her now,
(don't want to hurt her feelings ) and all. I don't like the color much and it tends to slip.
last time I bitch I need a new chain. Thanks Grand-Ma !!
very good g nice its riely work
I subbed you're awesome man
+TheYunMing bad ass awesomeness ! thanks for watching and sharing !
i love icibanmoto
the last oil you put, what is it ? thkank so much
+Hồng Lĩnh Nguyễn just chain lubricant
tks sir
Big Bad A$$ ! Can I use used motor oil on bicycle chain?
can you clean a belt drive up the same way?
+Austin Banner give it a try and let us know ! I don't have one to test
Can I get that electrolyte solution from nickel town customs?
i would certainly think so. probably
Would this work on a shaft drive ichi.
Dude Monkfish yes, of course. probably.
TOP TIP and very Badasss + + + +
he's shipping those stickers already tested lol
May be can help, but I will get a knew chain, most likely the chain will have the rollers in a not very desirable condition.
Wow, looks like...new... !! (-;
2 sporks! Don't forget it!
precise measurements are key
Was the part with the hammer necessarily? XD
I needed to break free the frozen links
+Ichiban Moto lol well mister hammer did a good job.
Isn't chain mail illegal?
Is this water?
Help me please😧!
if you really clean things for people i need you to clean a lot of things for me hahaha
for a racoon skin hat ?
Ichiban Moto hahahaha no.. i have a dirty carb, and chain and maybe a few other parts i want to be cleaned but i don't have anything to make them look really good
you should added a bottle of Gatorade for its "electrolyte content
I like video
I don't know how the construction with the stream (power) looks and works ... I am german sorry for grammatic mistakes oder sth. like that
super
Voltage grade assembly tape=blue painters tape.
Ur cool guy
wow
3 sporks...haha!
+Hotdogger808 it's important to be precise !
I'm all about DIY but why not just get a new chain???
+Robert Craft sometimes you can throw time at maintenance instead of money
Have You ever hear that You are the evil one? ;)
+Elmer T no, never.
I have motor bike chain for cleaning
+Bag One send it on over !
Sporks!!
