Man, I have to yet again say that your advice is not only incredibly insightful but also grounded in honesty. It's clear that you genuinely care about your message to be of help when making informed decisions without the hype. Respect bro, for real.
@@TheBaldingPlebs too late, I got my position years ago, sorry if the stragglers needed it to be hyped so they could gain confidence. I had it way prior.
Yeah, if you see it as an investment… you should have entry and exit points, and reevaluate the goal every so often. As wise men say, paper gains ain’t shit til you sell.
I collect Sir's and full art, but I sleeve all holo's. I'm trying to figure out which are best to hold, but all the rest I need to sell. I'm just not sure the best way to do it. I work full time, married, have a farm, etc... so I'm working on finding a way to share what I don't collect with someone else, without giving it away or throwing it away.
I've used a spreadsheet to calculate a minimum selling point of my sealed product that if I were to sell all I've held of that product at that price it would cover eBay fees and all initial purchases (invested, collected, and ripped). That isn't my goal sell price, though. I will hold as long as I am able to, but if I have to sell something I'll look for things that have crossed that threshold first so I would not be negative overall.
Absolutely love VStar Universe boxes! And for the selling part, like you often say, selling some, holding some, I think is a pretty safe way to gradually increase your networth in the hobby. For example, I bought 2 bb cases from Surging for 630 per case and sold 1 of them last week for 1200. Now I can basically hold my other case without losing practically any money.
Pretty realistic advice, thank you! I think it's a bit similar to how people handle ETFs. You'll never know when the absolute rock bottom is and in the same vein you won't predict the peak. The real winner is time. Time is the strongest ally you have, the longer you sit on stuff, the more likely it is to be more than it used to be :)
I’ve started to factor if I even want to deal with items worth $300 plus. I prefer selling locally at my card show, but while living in a small town I know liquidity will increasingly become an issue at these higher prices.
As a seller. Sell now. As a buyer. Wait until after the holidays. Because most likely people spent more for the holidays and need to sell off their collection and will drive the market down slightly.
“Because nobody wanted it when it released” this!! These sets, if the cards have intrinsic value, can do well over time for sure. They were simply overlooked! I opened the Persian from shrouded fable last night. The reflection really has a great effect that makes the person look ghostly in the window. No other set has that. I think people will want it more next year for sure
Hi! Great Video as per usual! I have just bought a few shrouded fable ETBs, what you have said about them have really resonated with me. Also may change my selling strategies based on this video ( I am guilty of trying to hit the tops and bottoms)! Thanks for the advise and great content!
Took a break from watching Poketubers but happy to be back watching your channel. Really enjoyed hearing your perspective about buying in a bull run from a month ago as well as watchinag your break stream last night! Keep up the good work Alex :)
Im at the point that I only considering selling stuff to cover cost basis, making the product I am holding basically free. Then put that money towards paying off college.
Just got into the hobby and your videos have been very useful on shaping my mindset on what I wanted to do. I started flirting with the idea of doing collecting, selling and investing all at once - ultimately have reflected that running an active business right now isn't for me but I can collect for fun and hold for long term. All thanks to your advice
What most people don’t realise is that even if price goes down, yes it looks scary to see your money temporarily disappear but until you sell that product you haven’t lost anything. Yes you’re at a temporary loss & it can’t be scary to look at but if you’re investing for the long term you’ll be much better off a lot of the time if you really believe in what you’re investing in
The reason I love this investing strategy right now so much is because even when there's a confirmed giant 151 reprint, and I have a lot of my Pokemon investments in 151, I'm not worried whatsoever because I know in a couple years it won't matter in the slightest. As long as you have some money that can sit, and you understand Pokemon, I don't see how you can lose
Having a plan before you sell is super important. I let go of a couple cases of twilight and did my last haul on Crown Zenith. Twilight is at the top before inevitable reprint (greninja) madness and Crown Zenith will have a big year in 2025. Another move I made was into battle styles. I know it's basically urshifu craziness set but at 135 a box and it has the sleepy tyranitar, there's just no way it stays 135 for long.
Great advice! Always hard to time the market, Pokemon or otherwise. Also...Surging Sparks, seems the amount of boxes for sale on tcgplayer keeps dipping. no reason at all it is going to drop over the next month at least
I’m curious, is buying at MSRP for sets that we know are crazy hot a good idea? I’ve been successful in preordering a bunch of prismatic at MSRP from big box stores, have bought 151 bundles at msrp, and buy booster boxes for $600 a case on set releases (except surging sparks which LCS sold for $130 a box on release day, glad I didn’t FOMO on that one and just bit the bullet). I figure as long as I’m not buying battle styles or junk collection boxes for MSRP I’m fine, but need to check with the expert 😂
What if my only cards are from early scarlet and violet. What Holo rares are most valuable from base/obf/pal/par ? At first scovilian was 5$ but is there a reference site for top rated holo's?
Really appreciate your rational approach to Pokémon investing because it helps me make better and less emotional decisions in the hobby! Happy holidays!!
I just need a clear straightforward diagram of what sets have peaked and what and when is still going to spike in value in the next update to this series. Thanks! Great vid!
this is always such a hard thing to understand whether to buy or wait, sell or wait. ive always been wrong lol preciate your insight on this! What about a Standard 151 ETB? Should that be kept sealed same as a PC or UPC? Not sure i heard you touch on that
If you're planning on holding, Id be ready to hold for 3+ years or so. One thing to notice, is that this past month, PSA has been BRUTAL on grading pokemon, gem rates on pokemon subs are under 50%, Surging Sparks has a gem rate of only 40%.
I got a fair amount of Evolving Skies at $4-$5 per booster from mini-tins, etc. I’m selling some here and there in the hopes I can get some Surging Sparks out of a Pokemon vending machine. Wish me luck! Merry Christmas everyone!!
I have a sealed ceramic booster box of Evolving skies. It currently goes for $1500 AUD approximately. Should I consider selling this? Will it keep going up in value? I have no need to sell, it is purely to declutter if I sell.
I loved vstar universe was so much fun to open! I think even if a surging reprint comes im still just going to hold even if it drops it's not going to drop as low as I got it for. And time will make it grow beyond where it is now even if there's a big reprint.
Alex I really do appreciate your videos and the effort you put into your channel. Thanks for answering our questions and sharing your experience in the hobby. Hope you have a great Christmas and a happy New Year.
Hey man, love your channel and thx for the tips;) I just have a question, don't know if you want to answer it.. but what do you thing about paradox rift, i could buy a case of booster for 600$ what do you suggest me?
I had been buying little of this & that since the Pokémon x/y era && just I've just now started selling off items here in the last few months to rack in profits 📈 & get room for new products
I’m selling anything that’s at least 33% profit. Usually just things around 50% profit. Then I take that and build more inventory and wait for the next.
I hope those boosters hold something really cool! I've never had a chance to open a japanese booster, but japanese cards seem so sleek:D Also, question: isn't it always better to hold on to sealed collectibles as the value will inevitably rise as there are less around? Or is this a valid strat only in you have small quantities of product?
It’s like climbing Mt. Everest you have to get used to the 1st bases altitude before the next same as in investing you have to get used to the time to reward for sealed products the climb gets harder the longer you wait wether it goes up swiftly or at a slithering pace.
On one hand it's simple, but on the other hand there's plenty of nuance to it. If I get something more for liquidity reasons rather than as a long term investment I tend to look for a deal. Otherwise what's the point right? I'm not gonna get a $120 box just to sell it at $120 in a few months. Either it's an investment or a potentially good place for my money to be in for the short term.
I sold a lot of my raw/graded. Ive been stocking up for the past 3 years during the bear market and prices have been so up this year. I plan on just restarting my collection focusing on sealed/ plays
I recently sold a portion of my collection. At these higher prices people want to pay between 70-80% cash. Most of the buyers are resellers who go to conventions or card shows. Actual collectors buy closer to market but don’t buy as much and takes lot longer to sell.
I buy what I happen to find here and there. Don’t rip next to any of it because I have brutal luck so just keep it sealed and see where it does in 15-20 years. Been crazy to see the market moves from when I started in 2000.
My seed money into the hobby is largely invested into 151. It’s a tough time to either take the profits to reinvest the seed money, or hold for the longterm for bigger gains (which I’m totally cool with, as well)
Im in the same boat as you my friend, as well as having a few surging booster boxes that I got super cheap due to Alex's advice. In my opinion, I don't think it matters how much 151 they print, in 3-5 years I think 151 will be worth some good ass money so Im holding it for at least a few years.
Thanks Alex! 👍 I am still keeping my sealed products. They are still out of sight, out of mind. If the price dips, I will buy more, and consider them as gifts.
