I have been twice a day meditator for 21 years. My emotions and thoughts were out of control. At the edge of a mental break down. I took up meditation, I was looking for a way to either turn off my brain, or escape my head. I have found control of both. Tho I still meditate twice a day, I feel as if I am in a continuous state of meditation. If I am at home and have no need to think, I can just shut the chatter off and have perfect quite stillness right where I am. But moreover it's balanced the powers of being. I mean I'm not fighting for control, I know for a fact that I Am the control... That's being that's Knowing. Meditation for me has been the discovery of my personal power not to control or try to control what happens in my life. But rather how, I responded to what happens while living life. If everyone knew what meditating really does for you they would all be meditating...

Meditation has given me a sense of wonder. I was in college and graduate school for almost a decade. During that time I was indoctrinated into scientific dogma. Through that experience I lost my childish wonder about life and the universe. Meditation has brought that back to me. While meditation has many statistically measurable effects on our minds and bodies it also offers many intangible benefits. Meditation unlocks information in a way that amazes me. I always tell my children that it’s like receiving downloads from the universe. In return for 20 minutes a day the meditator receives a literal wealth of benefits that cannot be described in words.

Nice presentation. Meditation is the first step to take control of our life. Once we become good at it, we need to level up by eating less and exercise more. Finally, following the yogic precepts to correct our behavior(control our different urges). In the end, we become a master of our body and can manifest our ideas into this physical reality in the most efficient way possible. Without the beginning of meditation, we are just a slave to our sensory perceptions.

Here is a simple trick, to use, when you look into the distance at the horizon, everything below the horizon, uses the prefrontal cortex network, anything above the horizon line uses the 1st original network, This first network does not use the prefrontal cortex and therefore has no words or thoughts or ideas , it just experience's , the prefrontal cortex network, ,is where words and ideas and concepts live , the prefrontal cortex is where anxiety , depression OCD live,
So to clarify, if you look up more, you suffer less from depression, anxiety and OCD , it literally is, the more you look down , the more you suffer from anxiety , depression and OCD, and also much much more likely to get Alzheimer's

Some western meditators only focus on the calm your mind feeling peace level, but that is actually not enough, we need to take it a step further to cultivate love and compassion, meditating for oneself and for others.

A person that cannot even be comfortable with himself/herself can never be comfortable around others. In meditation we learn to be so comfortable with ourselves that we can forget about time and body and bask in peace and happiness. The deeper the meditation, the greater the happiness. Mental stability enable us to see life with insights. One of the insight is we don't need material things or others to be happy. Cheers.

@@ranidr it really doesn't matter as long as you can find something to help keep your focus whether it be complete silence, mantras, guided meditation (this is what I still do) or ambient music etc.. the key is consistency and progression, the latter will come naturally as its innate to us to want to improve when you start seeing results... another difficult thing is keeping your motivation going so doing/trying multiple techniques it good when you get bored or find yourself procrastinating.

I'd like to see some research on "compassion training" in those of us who work in fields where we must minimize empathy, e.g., physicians, soldiers, nurses, police officers, etc. I know for me and for other doctors I know, we avoid/ do not participate in compassion meditations bc they give us anxiety or trigger some other negative outcomes. Increasing empathy in our roles is not helpful and can be detrimental. But of course it'd be great if we could improve our compassion towards family members or in some way that does not interfere with our duties.

I think it’s important to distinguish between compassion and empathy. Empathy is feeling the pain another person is going through. Compassion is being able to acknowledge the pain the other persons pain and help them through it. (If I remember correctly from the video)

    • @deela262
      @deela262 3 года назад +1

Empathy/ compassion must be first directed on oneself, before trying to project on others. ( The Buddha's Teachings - Metta Sutta).
If one does not win over Anxiety within himself, he may even end up getting depression or a nervous breakdown seeing the tragedy and trauma of others.
The defying principal is that every living being is in the same boat. I may just happen to be little or more better off than others at this moment but I'm also liable to face the same downturns. Thinking thus one must direct empathy towards oneself... A LOT...
Then act with the same wish for physical and mental wellness for others...
But in modern times people think caring for oneself is selfish , or feel guilty to care for ones own wellbeing when others around him are suffering. However if one does not know to swim there is no point in jumping into water to save another drowning person
World is yet to ' discover' the POWER of Metta.
If more people learn about it, practice it, and teach others about it, there won't be so many ' interventions ' required in the first place becuse each one will be empowered to manage their lives without being a source of harm to the society.
Properly done, it can kills all fear and aversion within. ie. No adrenalin responses or getting stuck in physiological trauma. The thought patterns will control the reptilian brain from getting overcharged
On a side note This state of mind is what made The Buddha stay without flinching when facing a heavily intoxicated charging elephant, a raging demon named Aalawaka or the charging, armed serial killer named Angulimala ( who had superhuman physical strength gifted by a demon that even the mighty King Pasenahi with his armed forces was scared to face.)

      Why?

@@kathrynb130 Because often classical science has been swaying away from metaphysics. But modern science is approaching a point where it has to sublimate into metaphysics. The practice and goal of Indian meditation (Raj-yoga) was to realize the true nature of soul. It was meant for a very different reason that what it is perceived today in its diluted form. But nevertheless these "side-effects" of meditation are good enough for majority of population today to be seen as benefits of a practice.

We dont know yet.. another example is neuroscience and consciousness study which deals with how is this so called "first person experience created" its called the hard problem of consciousness. and there is no answer to it. When I say sublimate into metaphysics, thats because sooner or later we will reach a threshold of matter where matter seize to exist atleast under modern observations and we will start talking about abstract concepts.

There are hundreds of studies on ways to help with the symptoms of dimentia. Like the lecturer briefly mentioned- learning and consistently practicing any focused thing helps. There have been studies with improvement regarding crosswords, word searches, card games, practicing new music, and meditation.
It's not a cure but there is evidence it alleviates. You might ask your family doctor to recommend ideal activities for plasticity if you are close to them and they have any experience. If they don't have the ecperience they may have a recommendation on who to ask, though I'm sure you already have asked around by now.
My heart goes out to you, I know it's terribly difficult, be strong. This is a monumental labor of love, remember to take care of you.
Edit: I mean to say: put yourself in your husband's position and put him in yours. Your husband is your Partner, but you will eventually need a team to take some and then most of the responsibility for his care. Roles reversed, What would you want your partner to deligate to the team? Allow yourself to do that for him. Ask yourself as things progress, What would I want him to do now? Let yourself do that for him.
I've been there with other illnesses for my husband and father. Neither of them would let me clean them as they were slipping, so we got a nurse when they couldn't any more. I couldn't easily roll them, so nurse. I stopped eating, asked nurse to remind me etc. In the end, I was the company keeper.

I started meditating after I had a wonderful spiritual experience after taking some LSD back in 1973. Here is a funny story for you . I live in an apartment complex where there are a few male feral cats that get into fights with each other. When I hear them howling at each other I go outside to where they are..usually under a car. I center myself and start chanting. Almost immediately they stop howling at each other. After a few minutes of chanting I start walking away. One of the cats will then dart out and leave. It works every time. I have used it with dogs who have followed me barking at my heels when I used to deliver mail for the Post Office back in the 70's. I may have missed hearing this in your talk but did you talk about the different affects you can get with different breathing exercises?
