Thanks Mike! Well, that's one vote for the shorts. I've gotten a lot of flack for the shorts and I know it's not the best example to set... but it was HOT and I was still melting in the other gear I was wearing. 🙂
Great video great bikes. I had the 1978 KZ1000 with a Kerker... great bike if you don't push it in the corners. The CSR even better with the 2nd gen engine and lighter. I love the 900, very comfortable bike and Honda quality.
Thanks! I just picked up two more projects - a 1977 KZ1000 and a 1978 KZ1000 with a Kerker. Both are basket cases so I'll start with the '78 first. Stay tuned...
Hi Jon, Greetings from old Blighty. Thank you for the sheer joy of your videos. I had my bikes in the late 1970's. I had Hondas, a 750/4 was a short lived joy. Always lusted after the 'zed thow' ST shaft and the Suzy GS850. Your carefree sunshine rides are moving, and allow me to 'live the dream' once more. Love, Peace and blessings from a sunny English seaside, Steve :0)
Thanks so much for the positive feedback. These videos are my way of sharing these classic machines with others. Time rolls on and I know I won't be able to ride forever. I hope to steward these well and pass them on to loving homes some day. My love of two-wheeled travel started on a pedal bike - ride on and enjoy the English countryside!
Yeah Jon, my old '81 CB900C had the original exhaust, but I bought a MAC 4/into 1 exhaust and put it on , and wow, much louder, I didn't know/check if it did anything else....... I liked it, but at the same time , I missed the "ORIGINAL" sound...... but wow, some 42lbs. Mac = 21 lbs.....
One thing I like about the MAC is that it sounds good when you're in the throttle but quiets down when you're steady state cruising. And, as you said, it is half the weight of the stock exhaust.
Please tell me the CSR is for sale!! It was my first bike. I bought it off a fellow soldier while stationed in Italy. "Geronimo's!" I used to love to tear through the Asiago mountains! Brought it back to Bragg, got married, started my family and rode less and less. Finally sold it to get a down payment for a van but never forgot the great times had with my old friend!
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing the awesome memories! Riding in Italy sounds incredible. I would consider selling the CSR1000 to the right person. I haven't found another one in this nice condition. Feel free to email me at: jonsmotorcycle@hotmail.com if you're a serious buyer.
Thanks for the great video. I just bought an 82 CB900 Custom off of BAT and am refreshing myself on reviews like this. What part of the world are you in? Pretty farmland and countryside.
Very helpful thankyou, I have a line on a 82 kawasaki 1100 spectre, have you ever ridden one? If so how would it compare to these two? I have retro experience 2014 cb1100, 2020 w800, but no vintage experience, this is a new area for me so if you have any advice about the spectre I would appreciate it. Ps what state are you in looks a bit like WI but warmer. Again great video. Happy new year to you and yours
The Spectre is very similar to the KZ1000 CSR. I'm not sure if the Spectre is fuel-injected, if so you may want to check on the reliability of that system. Retro is great if you value a really low-maintenance machine. Vintage takes more time to sort out all the systems (brakes, suspension, electrical, carbs, clutch, etc.). To get a bike driveable can take months, to get it truly sorted can take years and significant amounts of money. But, those projects are very satisfying in the end. If you have patience, mechanical interest/ability and funds, maybe vintage is for you.
Each of these bikes has strengths and weaknesses and I described what those are. I thoroughly enjoy riding each one but my expectations are different when I ride them. If I have half an hour to kill, the Kawi gets the nod - pure fun. If I'm doing a longer ride or want a more relaxing ride the Honda is my choice. Neither of these bikes is perfect. However, they are both great bikes in different ways - that is the point.
Love both of these. Absolutely gorgeous bikes. Big fan of Japanese motorcycle's, cars, and their engineering. Awesome bikes. Both of them.
Thanks Michael, I definately agree!
Jon, I love you wearing shorts! That's how people rode Japanese bike in the 80's.

That Mac exhaust slip on exhaust did great when I replaced the four into four to four into two on my old 1972 Honda 500 four.
Right on Rickie! I think my 1979 CB750K also has the same 4-into-2 MAC slip-ons. I'm not 100% sure since there's no name on them.
Beautiful bikes! I'd go with the KZ, but that's just me.
Right on!
kawasaki allways had good looking cruisers.even the new vintage remakes look good.never had the pleasure of riding one though.
Agreed. I haven't ridden the Z900RS or Z900RS Cafe yet but they are beautiful bikes. I'll ride one the first chance I get and post a review.
Kawasaki! because better sound.... both are very beautiful, I have z1100 A1. For my taste the most beautiful bikes were late 70's early 80's
Great video great bikes.

You should try and find a Kawasaki 1100 Spectre always thought they were beautiful bikes.
I wouldn't say no if the condition, mileage, and price were right.
brill vid again jon......... ill have the zed b 4 the honda
Thanks David, so far the KZ has gotten the most votes.

You're welcome. I'm in PA.

Wow. You didn’t pick a winner, so your video didn’t make a point.

They are both winners !
