Glad to be here Beatley Tone and your new series on McCartney and his solo career so much to cover Paul has so much variety i just love all Paul's songs except one Freedom it's to week and no good blazing rock guitar Freedom songs are more in john lennon's qualifications and Paul's love in song is awsome! Nice your doing some Paul deep cuts diffinatly Soily is a good deep cut just love it! Junior's farm good be a deep cut possibility If Paul wants to rock out he can do with the best of them! The song To You is a true deep cut and one of his best Great series Tone! Happy New Year to all! Beatley Tone just a thought Paul needs to play the song To You live in concert this is a killer track!!!

    Hi Tony!
Thanks for a very enjoyable video! There are many hidden treasures on Paul McCartney's solo and Wings albums. Single Pigeon, Cafe On the Left Bank and Dear Friend are among my deep cut favourites. I have enclosed the Wings setlist from Oslo August 9th 1972. Here you will find both Mumbo and Soily. This was my first rock concert. An unforgettable experience!

I have always been abashed that more people don’t like or mention “Love in Song.” I once heard someone deride it as a typical McCartney lovey-dovey song, when it is actually a bit more mysterioso than that, with some very evocative lyrics that are not blandly straightforward. Absolutely one of my favorite Macca creations.

The Note You Never Wrote is probably the best composition on the whole Wings At The Speed Of Sound album.

I probably would go that far personally but everyone has choice etc but it is a song that I have always thought is excellent and unfairly overlooked - maybe because Denny sings rather than Paul, I dunno. Glad you really like it too

I ditto you on the hidden gems, bought and listened to Wings upon release and played a lot. Genius crafted Single Pigeon. big rock Mambo, my friend and I just talked recently about Love in Song, I used to get chills on the chorus, Venus and Mars is the best album. my wife and I just fell in love with The Note you Never Wrote, well crafted song and the bottle on the waves is effective. Good words about Soily, , I love Cafe on the Left Bank as the deep cut on London Town, I never liked To You song, like you, but it's great now, I appreciate you expressing great tracks ! Thanks !

Thanks mate. I always enjoy the thoughtful way that you pick a topic & structure your conversational message. GAZ (Melbourne/Australia) PS I have a funny pesonal memory about Red Rose Speedway.. I was about 13 years of age in 1974 & was starting to really get into the Beatles & anything solo. I rode my pushbike down to my local record store. I came across Red Rose Speedway & was intrigued by the cover/artwork. On my way home having bought the record & trying to ride my bike & carry it, simultaneously, I hit a bump & went over the handlebars of my bike. But somehow I managed to fall off without damaging the record. I played it when I got home & was spellbound by the sound of it all. I still have the LP & still enjoy thinking about that story whenever I play it. All the best.

That is the power of pop music. thanks for sharing your story - always great to hear this sort of thing from other fans

Im of a similar vintage as well, slightly younger born in 62...my brother was a little older than me and worked in the local record shop so brought home stacks of albums and singles...so i was always discovering new albums...i used to play Venus and mars and Band on the run religiously not really taking notice of who the group or singers were at the time...became a Beatles fan october ish 1980...Obviously 2 months late what happened and i then started this obsession with listening to collecting all and reading up on this great band...So when id finished buying up Beatles albums i started on the solo...too my surprise id got 2 of Maccas already...apologies for my punctuation & grandma 😊

Another great video and 100% agree on Love in Song and Note You Never Wrote, always wanted the guitar solo to go on longer.
Like you, Wings Over America was my first album I bought which got me into Wings, looks like I made a great choice.
Lonely People off Venus and Mars another favourite but depending on which mood we are in, there's always a Macca song to suit.
    Looking forward to next video.

Hello Tone, I enjoyed the video as always. I am looking forward to hearing which McCartney songs you can't stand, as I have a number of those too. Many of my favorite McCartney deep cuts are the B-sides to his singles, such as Sally G, Country Dreamer, Ode to a Koala Bear, and Rainclouds. Here are my favourite deep tracks from the Wings albums:
    Wild Life: Tomorrow
Red Rose Spreedway: Only One More Kiss
Venus and Mars: Call Me Back Again
Wings at the Speed of Sound: Must Do Something About It (Joe English sings it very well)
London Town: Café on the Left Bank
Back to the Egg: Baby's Request

Thank you so much for doing this video series- it’s so great to see people loving Paul’s solo work as opposed to dismissing it- and I like mumbo as well- just think if he refined the lyrics more it could have been a hit- but Paul tends to follow his muse and not overthink words even if his arrangements are unbelievably good (example magneto and titanium man has a backing that stands up to just about anything by anyone in the 70s)

I have few Macca solo albums, and so the deep cuts as you described them was a nice introduction, and in some cases re introduction to some tracks. The first one did not melt my butter, but a few of the ballads did.Especially the one that Denny L sang on.As for “Soily” always like that one.Has great energy, and for me would just a great opener or closer to any live show.I do like the live version on OHC but yes this one has added spice with it’s long intro for sure.Look forward now to part two, and rediscovering some more Macca gems.Stay well.

I don't get the concept of To You being the only song "exclusive" of Back To The Egg.
What do you mean? That it wasn't released on a single?
In case both Love In Song and Soily have been released as B-sides as well.
For me Back To The Egg is a treasure trove of deep cuts, as is London Town

    • @beatleytonesbeatleschannel
      @beatleytonesbeatleschannel  12 дней назад +1

Well as I mentioned in the video a lot of the songs (6) have been played live, there are 3 singles , I a double A side so these aren't really deep cuts for me. Some songs are throwaways like Reception and the Broadcast, some are half finished songs grouped together so although these are deep cuts not good enough for me to include here, Rochestra songs are not really Wings songs so it didnt give me a lot to play with. But look, if you love BTTE thats cool there are no wrong or right answers here just opinions.

I am looking forward to this Macca Project series and really enjoyed your discussion of the album deep cuts - after listening to it i immediately wanted to go and listen to Soily 😂.
I reckon all of your choices are worthy, with the possible exception of Famous Groupies which could be my least favourite London Town track 🤨 My alternative choice would be a toss up between I’m Carrying and Don’t Let It Bring You Down (because apparently Im not supposed to mention Cafe on the Left Bank 😂)
I might also have chosen So Glad To See You Here over To You from Egg. I know it’s not top shelf Macca but it’s catchy as hell and rocks nicely.

Great to know that others have love for London Town too - it is in my top 3 Wings albums. I'm Carrying is beautiful and should be better known, but my deep cut from the album is Morse Moose and the Grey Goose (I wonder what video Tone will feature it in?) - there's an extended fan mix on YT that's well worth seeking out. Personally I love Back to the Egg, their final album. A truly under-appreciated album. Love In Song is one of my favourite McCartney tracks of all time. I first heard it as the B-side to the Listen To What the Man Said single. Btw you can make a case for Ram being the first Wings album as it featured 3/5ths of the initial Wings lineup - Paul, Linda and Denny Seiwell on drums.

It took me years to discover the album, as I was stupidly put off by the opinion of Carr and Tyler in their Beatles: An Illustrated Record book. I read An Illustrated Record cover to to cover so many times when I was first discovering all this music. loved the book, totally disagreed with the opinions once I got to hear the music ( wonder what they would have made of Driving Rain ! ) but Wild Life also took a long while to drop with me. Totally get the Mary Poppins thing - great shout

Interesting! Great posting, Tone! And very promising - what's to come. A bit long intro, but you know.
Mumbo rocks alright. The note ... f fantastick track. And of course Soily. Our favourite, Helter Skelter oart 2. Famous Groupies was my favourite the first time I heard the album and it's still one of my favs. AND To You is THE main and best track off BTTE!!

Happy New Year, my Beatle brother! A little tidbit about Venus & Mars, it was the first Macca LP that I bought on day of release. BOtR was the first Macca solo LP that I bought, but it was about 3 months after day of release and it was already a hit by then. Soily....is just a flat out belter and was such a great song live on the Wings Over America tour. It might just be my absolute favorite Macca deep-cut, although Girls School was pretty close (but probably wouldn't fit into this list). Cheers mate!

Ha Tone, you got me going on this one. I wouldn't change a word till Speed of sound. Perfectly said.
    My own choice ?
Bip Bop (some people find it dull or heavy, how could they never know) / Single P (as dear to me as My Love) / Love In Song (THE gem) / Warm & / Soily (but it came out as a single) / Café / Arrow
Anyway, you seem to be waiting for a decent Over America remix ? That was done in the Archive series (the most feeble effort in the series IMO), wasn't it ?
Again, what a pleasure to hear & see you. More, more, more please...

A few of my faves are: I'm Carrying; We're Open Tonight (both of these have simple but beautiful guitar picking); Lonely Old People (which reminds me of when my parents were alive) Warm and Beautiful (which I still think is one of Macca's best ballads) and finally, Don't Let It Bring You Down (this could have been a Fairport Convention song). Happy New Year to you!

Happy 2025 to you Tone! this is a great idea for a mini-series, and I'm already looking ahead to the next part. I've always loved "To You" myself, but I don't think there's any disputing "Soily" as my all-time favorite deep cut from the Wings era, for all the reasons you mentioned (the horn section, the thundering drums, and Macca's unreal vocals). I've always loved Single Pigeon. For me, the singer has been tossed out by his partner, sees a pigeon, and projects his own story on the bird. Would fit right in on Side 2 of the White Album. I agree on Love in Song, and nearly all of your choices. I'd go with Warm and Beautiful from Speed of Sound, with such unexpected chord changes, my personal favorite "Macca song that nobody knows about". Thanks again, and be well.

    Hi Tone
A very Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
This is a great subject to make videos about.
In my humble opinion, Wings Wild Life has only deep cuts, but quality deep cuts. I think it's a terrific album.
Single Pigeon from Red Rose Speedway is a very good choice. It shows the McCartney magic.Writing a deep story, like Eleanor Rigby, and writing a superficial story about a pigeon.. Lyrics about nothing, but still a great story.
Thanks to your video, I have to listen to Venus And Mars and Wings At The Speed Of Sound again. It's been quite a while since I listened to these albums.
Soily........ I definitely agree with you. The only disadvantage is that these kinds of songs ruined Paul's voice. He recorded and played a lot of these songs live where he really " stretches" his vocal chords to the max like he did from early on with The Beatles.
Famous Groupies ..... Yes, why not!
I'm Carrying or Children, Children could have been good choices as well.
Back To The Egg is my least favourite Wings album. I have owned the record for many years, but for me, all the songs on the album are deep cuts.
But tonight, I'm gonna listen to Wild Life. In my opinion, a very underrated album.
    Tale care

Hi Tone, Great video as always - thank you. I will not give you any of my favourite deep cuts yet as I do not want to jump the gun on part 2. I totally agree with you on "Single Pigeon" (which is my favourite track on RRS) and "Love in Song" - both great songs. I differ with you on the others - especially "Mumbo" and I really really differ with you on "Famous Groupies" which I skip every time (even on vinyl) as I think that the humour sounds very forced and false - it's certainly no "You know my name (look up the number)". I see that you've missed out "One hand clapping" which is a shame as I love the version of "Give me a ring" on that album. I also think that there are some fantastic deep cuts on the b-sides of the Wings era singles - I defy anyone not to love "Daytime Nightime Suffering".

Hi Tone. Great video, as always.
    Hate all the choices...my goodness...
.lol...j/k ...hope you burst out laughing....love all the choices, btw.
Mumbo helped me learn how to play guitar. It's a real rocker that is mostly overlooked by critics and fans alike. Basically, we could/will jam this tune out on acoustic one day in the future ..and it will be fun.
Get on the right thing from RRS. Always loved this song.
Call me back again - stupendous! a standout on album ....and great live song on wings over usa.
Beware my love - You know its a fav rocker of mine. We have discussed before....and see below
Beware my love - wings absolutely killed it live on wings over usa. Soily is a superb choice of course its just beware my love took on a much heavier sound live due to Jimmy Mac who seared and soared.
Cuff link - much malign thrown this way upon release I always liked this riff song. Funky to a point, it's similar to Robin Trowers somebody's calling riff from 1977.
Arrow through me - one of my favorite Paul songs from that era, probably should have been held back for macca 2 with goodnight and daytime nightime taking place on BTTE. Just a thought...an overlooked gem.
In closing... you are getting rather famous and I know the masses replying make your job even more time consuming. Thanks as always!

Hi Russ, Happy New Year mate. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your deep cut choices. At some point in this series I'm going to be attempting a song ranking video for the 70s so a lot of my big-hitter deep cuts will feature in that and I want to have as little repetition as possible. so the deep cut videos are mainly here to highlight some forgotten gems or songs that dont get a lot of love from fans . Ive never been that crazy about arrow through me - I dont dislike it or anything but I do really like Cuff Link. Obviously Beware my love is going to make my top 20 70s songs. I wont say anymore because part 2 of the deep cuts still to come . Thanks as always for your contribution

Happy New Year Tone! Another great video. I too love Mumbo and always thought Single Pigeon would easily fit on the White Album (especially because of the brass). The Note You Never wrote has a great melody and atmosphere, but I think some of the lyrics are odd ‘ The Mayor of Baltimore’ And the ‘vote/qote’ rhyme is a bit dodgy. I’ve always loved Soily and I hope One Hand Clapping establishes it as a classic. A deep cut favourite of mine is Some People Never Know, love Paul and Linda’s harmonies and the lyrics make a beautiful ballad. I'm listening to Soily from Wings Over America now to refamiliarize myself with it. I've always liked it The riffs are cool. It's got great guitar, wah wah - Jimmy's the best and bass and the middle eight is cool. Very heavy song. Drumming is top tier for Wings. I can't understand the lyrics and I'm not looking them up. What drug did you say you thought influenced it, stimulants? Maybe. Are there overdubs or is it completely live? It's a real powerhouse song for sure. Is that the real crowd? They loved it.
Now I'm refamiliarizing myself with To You. It's pretty good. No auto-tune for sure. Two guitar solos in one song. Laurence Juber is superb. The guitar has some sort of effect, almost sounds like twin guitars. Paul is doing a lot of yelling at lover that wronged him? It's refreshing to hear songs that are not part of the McCartney schlock. Who were they competing against on the charts: The Pretenders and the punk rock and new wave bands of the day? Paul, if I remember correctly, was a fan of Squeeze at the time. I bought Cool for Cats after reading about it in Rolling Stone or something, around this time. It's a great record of pop new wave. Very melodic and hooky.

When I was in my early teens, in the little town in Iowa I grew up near, I was at the local pizza place with my best friend and his girlfriend (who hated me!) It was near closing time and I saw "Soily" was on the juke box. "Ya gotta hear this!", I told 'em. As soon as it started (even though he's a big Paul fan) they both looked at me like they had migraine headaches and could barely tolerate me. After about twenty seconds, the waitress -- who looked like she'd just had the most stressful day of her life, asked. "You don't mind if I turn this noise off, do you?" And before I could say anything she actually UNPLUGGED the juke box. Funny, I thought it was a pretty good song!

A ”worst tracks” listing by someone you respect is always painful to listen to. You end up feeling they just don’t appreciate songs in the way you do yourself. That being said, I’d love to hear someone trash Loup on Red Rose Speedway. Always thought that should have been left out, in favour of, say, Denny’s lovely I Would Only Smile.
Deep cuts is a nice idea, helping people appreciate forgotten tracks more. I do love Mumbo too! It’s got a great melody, which may be a bit hard to pick up in the rough arrangement on Wild Life. Single Pidgeon is a gem of a tune. Soily is great of course. Famous Groupies not so much, haha - I would rather have picked Don’t Let It Bring You Down from London Town. Likewise I’d choose The Broadcast over To You from Back To The Egg. We have to disagree on at least something sometimes, Tone. 😄

Totally agree with "Love in Song" and "Note." "Some People" and "Dear Friend" are my Wildlife picks. There are boots of the 76 tour that actually sound MUCH better than the official WOA album. When I brought up the sound of this album on the Steve Hoffman Forum, Steve himself responded that when he heard the original tapes for WOA, they strangely had no midrange. I always wondered why it sounded so lifeless. The CD issues haven't really improved it much either. Fortunately, the audio on Rockshow is very good.

“Famous Groupies” - another song I enjoy while others basically ignore it or run from it in horror. It’s a lot of fun… Is it silly and pointless. Yep… proudly so. Music can be “merely” entertaining. Good pick. Also, in addition to “pulchritude” we get “proscenium arch.”

I’d also add that famous groupies is a perfect example of how Paul can’t win- the people that ignore this one and knock Paul for being so “calculated” and then there’s the camp that knock Paul for releasing tossed off songs and not finishing them - I love famous groupies

I think you dismiss Back to the Egg to quickly. Almost every song on the entire album qualifies as a deep cut. 'Arrow Through Me' is a great jazzy number that goes over the top when the funky New Orleans horns kick in. "Spin it On' is a great rocker with its quickly delivered wordplay and almost punky attitude. 'Old Siam Sir' has Macca turning up the volume for a near metal-like effect only for the sheer fun of making loud music, despite the fact that the song is mediocre at best. 'After the Ball/Million Miles' and the other medley, 'Winter Rose/Love Awake' both have wonderful melodies and powerful performance and production. I don't think these were throaways; I think Paul really worked on this album but the arrest in Japan made him walk away from both the album and the band.

I never dismiss anything too quickly, everything gets considered thoroughly . I have done a full deep dive review of the album on the channel so it has been well considered. I saw 4 shows on the 1979 tour and 6 songs from the album were played live and in the video where I describe what I consider to be a deep cut - im looking from songs that only appear on their mother albums, havent been played live and were not singles. When you take out these , the thow away songs like the Broadcast which is not really a wings song, Rockestra songs which are also not Wings songs and minute long songs that are segued together which may well count as deep cuts but are not good enough to be included in my best deep cuts list it doesnt leave me much to play with. Basically BTTE has been elevated by fans to an album that is punching way above its pay grade and I cant cant work out why. however , there there are many many who like you thinks its a great album that is cool , there are not any right or wrong answers here just opinions

Any song on an album is a deep cut if you treat all the songs the same. How about a return to 'album tracks'? That is the what they all are after all and how more inclusive can that be?

Yes, nonsense. Look at all those Beatles deep cuts: Here Comes The Sun, Girl, Eight Days A Week, Twist and Shout... the list goes on... obscure, unheeded tracks that no-one has heard of! I think we know what you mean Tone!

@@davehealey2397 Perhaps I was not clear. There is no deep cut on an album if you look at all the songs as separate adventures within the LP format. Would you say that Zeppelin had deep cuts considering they never released singles? Why not treat the songs as simply pieces of the catalogue, some good, some not so good but all a part of a hefty ouvere or whatever. If you play a 'deep cut' enough times and everybody gets to hear it, it ceases to be one. I doubt if many in the UK call Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer', for example, a deep cut anymore, simply because it became familiar when played a lot.

    • @davehealey2397
      @davehealey2397 12 дней назад

Not really intending to cause a dispute here on one side or the other but I do think that the concept of a deep cut is a valid one. In an ideal world all compositions would receive equal attention, but I don't really think that is the case. It may differ from person to person but some tracks do tend to, shall we say, 'hide' on albums. Some people perhaps tune out instrumentals, others perhaps acoustic songs, but it can just be that they do not stick in the memory by having a memorable melody or lyric. Sometimes you can scan through a tracklist of an album and be unable to bring to mind a song by its title. Some tracks on albums are ignored in terms of radio play. Some just get a reputation for being not worthy for whatever reason or become those that are 'skipped'. Let's go to The Beatles again for examples. So maybe we are talking about Revolution 9, Flying, Dig It, Within You, Without You perhaps. As much as it would be nice if everything had an equal impact, in the real world that is not really the case. One of Tone's picks here, for example, I have no memory of at all and so am going to have to check it out. And I do have the album, so I have no excuse!

I don't think I've ever told you this. My favorite McCartney song from this century is THIS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. I remember hearing it when I was on hold at a department store. A new it was mccartney, I just didn't know where to find it. I only heard 20 or 30 seconds of it. It actually took me 2 years to figure that out. That song has everything you could want in a farm cardi song. His composition, bass, and piano playing.
I like to think he'd maybe somewhere in his mind written that song for linda. That was when he was having all those troubles with Heather mills. I think she's the least redeemable of all the Fab four wives. Just not a good person God
