I bought both a SAK farmer and a Leatherman Wave probably in '08, have basically carried the Farmer daily ever since, and typically only use the Wave for camping trips. 15 years later the Farmer works exactly as new, while the Leatherman has become noticeably sloppier and its second sheath is almost shot. For me SAK wins for EDC because its smaller and doesn't require a sheath that will wear out, and its also much more comfortable to carve/ whittle with, so its superior for bushcraft too.
Very good points and the reason I don't daily carry my leatherman (apart from the T4) due to the bulk. A smaller SAK in the pocket is perfect for 95% of stuff during the day! Great comment 👍
The two should not be compared. Leatherman almost always has one hand open capability on blades, and they lock. Being able to open the blade with one hand is vital to me, for self-defense purposes. Apparently, from what I generally hear, self-defense is not legal (?) in many European countries, which is freaking lunacy. 😨 Self defense is a human right, and if your government says otherwise, you officially live in a tyrannical dictatorship. 😬 Anyway, someone's pitbull got out and ran at me one day while on my bike. I was at a STOP sign, and the dog got up to me but stopped, barked, then ran away when the owner yelled at it. If that dog latched onto my arm, I would want a blade that I can open with one hand. People underestimate shizz hit the fan situations, all up until they're in one. Prepare and learn the lesson before the test, not after (if you live through it).
The wave has a diamond file on it to sharpen your other knives in the field. Wave also has multi driver bit so you can take your other tools apart in field ans fix or wash them. Leatherman has much more stout pliers, which grip far more than the smaller SAK pliers, which is good for untying tight knots, among other things where you need way more grip in a tight area. For those reasons I personally would not say the SAK is superior bushcraft tool. 🤔 Both have their positives and negatives. I'd definitely carry both. 😁

That's great quality for that Swiss Army Knife Champ you have had for 30 years. I have the small Swiss Army Knife Classic SD I carry on my keychain as a daily carry. For my hikes and camping, I have a Leatherman Skeletool CX which I like a lot - great quality. I like that Swiss Army Knife Ranger though and will likely pick one up to have as a backup knife for camping. Thanks for sharing.
I lean toward the Swiss A K just because it is lighter and less bulky in the pocket. Plus I have several of them I purchased over the years when they were a lot less expensive. I tend to keep the leatherman in the tackle box or the glovebox of the truck.
I have a Leatherman wingman that I keep in my FJ at all times. I use it a surprising amount. It has a lot of great tools on it but it’s not huge. I also carry in my little emergency kit a very small Swiss Army knife that I’ve had forever. It’s tiny but the knife on it is what I use the most and it works great for that. You know that I’m a gear junkie just like you. For some reason I have probably four knives that are in the FJ at all times. One for each side. Lol The crazy thing is, I use them all. I've had a classic Leatherman tool for years but stopped carrying it because of the questionable legality under UK law and it's also pretty heavy. Replaced it with a tiny Leatherman Squirt PS4 for daily carry. For some reason it's really hard to find the Squirt PS4 in the UK, no longer stocked in the usual retailers.
Totally agree with the quality of Leatherman and Victorinox. I have the Swiss Army Camper and the Leatherman Sketetool, really like both. The only Gerber I am considering is the Stake Out, it seems like a handy multitool. Thanks for sharing your favourites! :) :)
I usually carry the SAK Cybertool S for computer repair usage. Though as an addition to it, I like the smaller half blade multi tools, I went with the Rocktol ST02 12-in-1 for $19.98. It doesn't have the length of the screwdriver, sheath, pommel hammering ability or lifetime factory guarantee of the Gerber Armbar. Though it has a five year coverage, responsive customer service, all it's tools lock, it has a pocket clip, it has a titanium plated handle, etched marking rules and to me the value is, it's half the dollar amount of the Gerber Armbar.
saks are like a lower tier tool used for more delicate work that requires more finesse, while leatherman are for more heavy duty work. it would not be a bad idea to carry a version of a swisschamp and something like a leatherman surge or wave plus. the right tool for the job.
A sak is a lower tier tool?? I have 3 leathermans and all have rusted up even with regular maintenance. The scissors on LMs are crap and the springs broke on me with light use. Meanwhile, my grandpa gave me a sak that's almost 30 years old and it's STILL a work horse, almost zero rust and no broken tools. My new skeletool already has rust after 3 weeks even with very light use and weekly maintenance, which is very disappointing. I don't even live anywhere near salt water. Go figure
@@TheEmporiumOutdoors Definitely better build and material quality. Buck knives don't rust as fast as leatherman, but they supposedly have the same 420HC steel. So, I don't get why vic is lower tier. The fit and finish at the same price range (e.g. Handyman vs. Sidekick/WIngman) is so much better in saks and you get more tools. The leatherman definitely has better pliers and the OH blade is nice. But I expect my multi-tools to last especially if I'm paying a lot of hard-earned money for it.
My fav is my leatheman wave with a pocket clip. I hate its weight but its got everything I need. I'd love for leatherman to find a way to shave a few ounces off it. Their new ones are nice but they don't do anything my wave doesn't and they weigh more. I did upgrade my wave to a replaceable cutters one several years ago.
thank you for posting this video and going through each one of the features. maybe ill get the bigger swiss army knife at the of this year if i am able to get my college degree before the end of this year as a gift to my self haha we will see.
I wish Victorinox offered a One-Handed Trekker variant with a pocket clip. That would quickly become my EDC knife. That said, I carry a Leatherman Wave almost everywhere I go. I also carry a Minichamp on my keychain.
@@TheEmporiumOutdoorsI like it a lot. I recently replaced an ancient Midnight Manager with the Minichamp. The Midnight Manager was mostly okay after 20+ years on my keychain, except for the flashlight.
