    "Oh, a lit up USB cable, that sounds like a gimmick"
    ...
    **OMG it's going into the phone at the rate of charge!**
    **buys 3**
    Serious question: Have you tried it with a Qualcomm QC2.0 quick charger (Galaxy phones etc)? Wondering if it "moves" even quicker.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 лет назад +22

      I have definitely noticed the lights move at a few different speeds when charging different devices with different chargers. It's something worth experimenting with.

    • @DarcyFerrier
      @DarcyFerrier 8 лет назад +2

      could be a resistance value that changes the speed of the lights

      +lee x
      Possibly, but I can't imagine they didn't design it with 9/12V in mind . All they need is a 5V Zener Diode to regulate the voltage going into the power supply for the LEDs.

    • @DarcyFerrier
      @DarcyFerrier 8 лет назад +1

      It could just be a chip that controls the lights by watching the current draw.

      USB doesn't start and end with Smartphones. Do not forget that a lot of people own devices other than smartphones that also use USB to charge. This cable might (or might not) be useful for indicating charge level for these devices. Three action cameras were shown as an example in the video however there are a multitude of other devices charged via USB ....such as Action Cameras, Compact Cameras, Game Controllers, Bluetooth Headphones, Bluetooth Speakers etc

      I'm also surprised at this, how on earth are iPhones users meant to know they have a message waiting or missed call without turning on the screen? What a silly omission. Nearly all Android devices have a multicolour LED which you can configure to show different colours for different things and it shows the charge status so I don't need this cable! The flow effect is pretty cool though ;)

    With my latest phone I entered the world of wireless charging. The Qi chargers often have indicators when charging is complete and can be seen from across the room, etc. While this cable is rather neat, for myself I'll stick with standard cables for other USB powered items. Then too, I can't think of anything I have that doesn't discontinue charging when fully up. No overcharging then. Again, a neat idea but I'll pass. Good review as always though.

    when you are charging a lithium battery, leaving it on the charger after it is done charging will consume virtually no energy. Continuing to charge lithium batteries after reaching capacity is what causes them to explode. as a result, they are charged with circuits that automatically stop charging them when they are full.

    I've found quite a difference between USB cables, in that some charge at around 1600mA at best, whilst others can be as low as 400mA - despite using the same power source. Do you know how this cable performs, and can you recommend a USB cable that might give the 2amp charge that some smartphones and tablets need?
    Many thanks for all your reviews, and keep up the good work!

    A little word of warning, although this is a different version then I looked at, these cables generally are pretty poor charging cables with a nice light effect. But DO NOT use them connected to a Quick Charge device or a device that uses a high amperage charging current, bad things happen. ;) I did a video review about it here: ruclips.net/video/nGUvqwYypb0/видео.html . I also did some voltage and Amperage graphs to see how well it performs as a pure charging cable.
    Excellent work on this video Techmoan, really enjoyed it! :D

    BestBuy here in the US sells the same one, just with a specific cable for the Lightning and Android plug. The BestBuy one is horrible quality. It's one of BestBuy's own brands. The end that goes into the iPhone, broke once and got stuck in my iPhone. The thick USB end falls apart. Maybe I'll look for a better brand.

    Would you be interested in reviewing a combo VHF/UHF/FM antenna, maybe something like this? www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Hi-Tech-888-Indoor-TV-Antenna-New-with-Original-Box-/162112311855?hash=item25bea5922f:g:sEoAAOSwLs5XKc0K
    It meets the basic criteria of being a piece of vintage hi-fi gear, and it's fairly inexpensive as well.
    The reason I ask is that, while I mostly get video and music through the internet, I do sometimes watch TV with an antenna and listen to FM radio. Unfortunately, I live next to a bus stop, and the TV signal cuts out whenever a bus goes by. The idea of a big, complex combo antenna is interesting to me, but I do not know if it would work for my setup or even what the knobs and buttons do.
    I'm sure I'll figure it all out by the time you see this. I also don't know if an antenna like this would be compatible with both UK and US broadcast signals, or if we have too dissimilar of standards. But I bet there are other people with the same questions I have, and I'd certainly enjoy the hypothetical video. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    At $10 it's really not as expensive as it could be, these kinds of gimmicky devices usually cost upwards of $40. Still interesting.

    RE: EU Referendum
    Quick question.
    If instead of remain/leave, we were being asked on Thursday whether we wanted to join the EU or not, would you vote to join in its current state?
    I think if you're being honest with yourself the answer would be no.
    Then why on earth should we stay. We know that you can't change the EU and the UK consistently has its concerns rejected.

    Thankfully someone on amazon posted images of opened / fallen apart versions of this cable. Also lots of 1 star reviews that all have the same electromechanical complaints.
    Looks great, but I'm not going to buy this cable.
    Furthermore, I would love to have see you do a capacity test on USB cables. On how much current it's capable to pass to the device. That's the most important feature of a good charge cable.

    Well, my charger makes some kind of high-pitched hum, when it stops charging (it's barely audible, but somehow very noticeable). On the other hand, it's hard to say no to this sci-fi look.

    I bought two of these and was very pleased for the first few months.. However there is also some trouble with these. One of them stopped flashing the light while charging .. and both of them make the iPhone 6S do weird stuff. When the phone is unlocked and you put it to charge, it is like someone is pressing all over the screen. Random apps open and sliders move.. I don't know why this happens but it did this from the begining with these cables. Any ideas?

    Got something like this from Best Buy for Christmas one year. It was a cool idea, but I never use it because it makes this very loud and annoying high-pitched whine whenever the lights are on. I honestly can't be in the same room with it. So it just sits in a drawer now...

    For a phone this is unbelievably unnecessary, as any phone worth its salt has a notification light to indicate this, and you will remember the colour as you use it every day. But maybe for some device you don't use often it could be useful but the light would drive me mad!

    I got one of these and it is cool, though it was one of the cheaper ones, the end with the high voltage converter started coming apart, and the connection on the other side got unreliable (for the 4th gen iphone). The cable is the exact same style though, so maybe it's the same people that did it.
    This seems to be a higher quality one, might be worth picking one up again sometime, I'm not sure.
