    Medicine student here: those fabrics are designed to protect you from only one of the two main mechanisms of trauma: the penetration, which causes a lot of damage. In a shark bite though, the blunt force trauma would still leave you bleeding internally, which is a lot of fun.

      Biology enthusiast here, although what you say is true, sharks regularly don't rely on bite force as much as they rely on the slicing action of sideways bite movement, they have big jaw muscles but they rarely use the full capacity of them simply because they don't need to, their teeth are sharp enough to do most of the work without that much force applied behind them

    • @olivierallaire6302
      @olivierallaire6302 2 года назад +45

      Yeah, that was what bugged me in this otherwise awesome video. Simpler said, even if the teeth will not PIERCE through the suit, the shark bite's power alone is enough to damage your body through the fabric since it's not rigid, pressing on your body. To be fully protected from a shark bite, you'd have to find a way of making a rigid suit able to both resist being pierced and resist a 4000 psi bite. Good luck!

    • @Ididathing
      @Ididathing  2 года назад +1250

      So i didnt put this info in the video for some reason but apparently 90% of shark bite deaths are from blood loss. So yeah obviously if i 5 meter great white grabs you it will still squeez you to death but otherwise this would help reduce the depth of cuts a lot.

    Since it's been well established at this point that even though you're protected from the puncture you're not protected from the crush, perhaps you should also fill the suit with oobleck (or however it's spelled, ya know that weird jello stuff thats normally fluid but hardens the more kinetic energy that's applied to it. All the RUclipsrs were obsessed with it for a while). That might actually be a super cool suit if it was done right. A bit heavy but I mean comon it's fluid when youre moving and hard when you're hit. That's dank as hell!

      Among other reasons listed, you wouldn't be able to move. While oobleck does remain a liquid when not under a shear force, the speed at which you need to move your arms, legs and just body in general to walk/swim would mean it would remain solid the whole time.

    Sharks don’t actually have crushing power in their jaws, the wounding power all comes from how sharp their teeth are and the thrashing motion they do when they’ve taken a bite of something so this suit is likely more effective than the tests show. This is why chain mail is so effective at preventing shark bites and I’m it seems like UHMWPE is even better. How much did all that material cost by the way? It couldn’t have been cheap.
