  • Bought a used Canon 17-55 for $800.oo The front element was filthy dirty. Canon was charging $200 for cleaning not including shipping. I took a shot at it my self and succeeded. You can do it too. Watch carefully.

I just done it and Im soooo happy... saved £££'s, it is really easy to do... just need to convince yourself that you want to take the front element off and just be focused and careful ! Thanks !!!

pimp, I have this same lens. Was looking for a "how to" on how to clean this lens because.... IT DOES AFFECT PICTURE QUALITY! Most of the time I can fix it easily in PS, some of the time it's difficult. I'm tired of fixing it and simply want a clean lens. Thanks Simon, nice vid!

Hey stoploss, when I said "it does affect picture quality" I was referring to the dust on the lens, not the alignment. I had some big dust specs and was tired of them messing up my pics. So when healthpimp said dust never affects picture quality I felt I needed to correct his statement. With that said, when taking the lens apart, I simply note the orientation of the lens and put it back together with the lens in the same spot. It's easy, as the lens has a border with lettering and indentions

Thank you so much. I have the same lens. Good to now if I have to this.😄

Nice vid, but I don't know about your lens-cleaning technique. Never apply lens-cleaning liquid directly to lenses as it can seep into the innards. Also, always use separate lens-cleaning tissues/microfiber cloths. One with the solution in it to clean and remove what's on the lens, and the other to dry.

I hope you put a UV or haze filter to prevent dust and scratch

you should pick up a magnetized screw driver with those screws. It would help.

This is an expensive lens. Canon has designed it with great image quality, but build is quality is lacking for a £800 lens. I don't mean to imply that it should have been built to L glass standards, but so at least it doesn't draw so much dust into the lens. If you zoom in, take the rear lens cap off, position its end an inch infront of your eye, zoom out quickly, you can feel how much draw this lens has. A Canon after market modification would be great, rather than cleaning it all the time.

even if you scratch the front lens it will be so hard to see the scratches on your images since the focus is so far outside of the lens the surface isn't that important.

Curious. How did you make sure the front element was in the same place? I know you took note of where the screws were, but how did you determine if the front element was in the same exact spot?

you just blow inside of the front lens, would you not use a wet clean?

Thank you for posting. Do you know the size of the screwdriver? Also, is it possible to order an entirely new front glass from canon? I have a small scratch and may want to replace it someday. Thanks!
