Magicka might have one of the most fun magic system. Combining several different elements for completely different results is quite amazing.

And personally the one that actually feels the most wizard-y of them all, combining elements to get your desired result? even the set spells, you need to remember the combination yourself, instead of just hotkeying spells, which, as fun and impressive as they might be it really doesn't feel like you're doing it

Two Worlds 2, while an average game, had an amazingly detailed/creative magic system.
Essentially, it was similar to Tyranny's, however it was in 3D.
Choose an element. Choose a modifier. Choose a range-type.
    Example:
Force+ Summon anvils +AoE? Well you've just made a forcefield of 20+ anvils spinning around you.
Some of the spells can be quite creative.
    High jump spells.
    Spells to repel dead things.
Make it rain metal and stone, and then have that debris float around.
As well as typical fire/earth/lightning etc spells.
Again, the game was pretty average (especially the voice acting), but the magic system was downright revolutionary for its time.

While it just had the standard DnD spell slot system, I really liked everything else that Planescape:Torment did with magic. All the lore they had with it, the quest chain you went through to learn magic, while learning about the principles and dangers of practicing magic, the ways you could learn new spells from your companions and the cut scenes that played out when you cast the really powerful spells.

  • @Blasted2Oblivion
    @Blasted2Oblivion 2 года назад +25

The Tyranny spell system reminds me loosely of the Final Fantasy Type 0 magic system. You choose the element (fire, water, healing, etc) then you choose the targeting method (spread, long range, short range, aoe) and you can mix and match a lot of these for a pretty flexible spell system.

I'm surprised that there is no Two Worlds 2 on the list, but I've searched through your channel and it seems you haven't played it. Definitely check it out.
This game has a magic system like the one in Tyranny, but turned up to 11.
You can craft your own spells from cards you gather and create things such as traps spawning homecoming fireballs which summon skeletons on hit or the all-time classic - anvil rain.
If I remember correctly there are even few utility spells to craft like running on the water and high jumps.

I have to try Tyranny some day, I have heard great things about it’s magic system being intertwined with the story’s concepts of language and power. It feels like how shouts/thuum should have been in Skyrim (I still enjoyed them) as the descriptions from characters in game indicate it is about understanding words and intent. Yeah the best magic systems make it feel like academic study and give you options to customise your spells.

    • @captainblacktail8137
      @captainblacktail8137 2 года назад +2

it's more than just the magic system that is intertwined with language and words but everything. magic if it existed would be pervasive to all of life if it existed in the world so because words and meanings people give to those to those words influence magic, they then in turn influence everything in some way.
The above basically drives everything, from the story, to the characters, to the setting and it is the reason why tyranny setting is just so good.
Maybe some possible spoilers ahead but what's most interesting about this is that's its the spread of words and meanings among others that truly gives power back to that word or meaning, and is essentially causes a self fulfilling prophecy with a certain category of words. The system is akin to the 40k orcs where red things are fast because the orcs believe red means fast.

    • @kiltedwarriorgaming

@@captainblacktail8137 Well put, words are so important understanding and meaning and seeing a game embraces that both as relatable to our own existence but also grounding the Fantasy elements with it marks a great game. I look forward to delving into this game.

I loved the DOS2 system. The interactions between spells compounded with the flexibility provided by a lack of archetypes made for endless creativity. Much more action-packed.

Spire of Sorcery (still in Early Access) has a very interesting magic system. The combat plays as a turn-based first-person-view strategy/puzzle type of affair, with your 3 spellcasters each producing different runes which can then be shared between them and slotted into slots for various spells. The spells themselves also mostly elemental type spells and have interesting interactions between themselves. I quite enjoyed it and looking forward to further updates from the game.

I love Tyranny's spellcasting system, but wish it had two improvements. The first is being able to click on a spell assigned to a character and see how it was constructed. The second is that there are only so many slots available on the hot bar and not everything can fit in there, so that means some favorite and powerful spells are not going to be so easily accessible.

Not an RPG, but there's a fun Zelda-ish adventure game called Mages of Mystralia that's entirely based around spell-crafting as its central mechanic. Throughout the game the player will collect runes that they can attach to their basic spells, modifying them in a wide variety of ways, later gaining "trigger" runes which allow them to make spells that cast other spells. Generally that level of complexity is unnecessary, but there's some fun puzzles that utilize creative use of runes you might not think to combine.
The developer made a few videos showing off some of the system.

That was an interesting idea for a video, and good call on Tyranny being number one. I would throw in the orignal Dungeon Master (1988), It had an interesting rune system where you had to pick several types runes to combine into a spell, like a rune for spell power, one for element like fire, and one for the effect, like an AoE. It's been a while, but I thought it was really interesting, We did derive a magic system from that for our homebrew D20 pen and paper system back in the day.

Tyranny’s spell CRAFTING was fantastic, where it fell apart for me is that there was no cost to cast spells, they just had cooldowns. This meant that where as a warrior might unlock a new sword attack, a mage who unlocked say frost spells actually just unlocked a constantly growing number of spells. The end result is that while the warrior used his sword slash and is now sitting around auto attack for almost no damage, a mage is just cycling through his like 20+ spells making him a constant torrent of death and destruction, or healing and buffs, or both. End result was mages were op as hell and even non mages were heavily incentivized to have a number of spells just to fill the downtime between their main attacks

I quite like path of exile spell/skill system. The way you slot in skills, modifiers, triggers and additional effects leads to some really intense spell casting effects. SkyUI helps to some extent, letting you save spell sets, but I would still prefer if you could just hold down the number hotkey to equip spell (in offhand, or mainhand if a shield is equipped or another spell is already casting) AND start casting in one action, started by double-tap instead to equip same spell in BOTH hands before casting hold begins (and going back to previous weapons when key is released). Combat Gameplay Overhaul lets you onehand a twohander for spells in the offhand, and Path of Sorcery improves magic damage scaling, but it's still not quite fluid enough. Roleplay is improved with Immersive Spell Learning DESTified but that's more to prevent you "eating" spellbooks.

One thing taht Skyrim has over Morrowind and Oblivion is that your spells and shouts have actual forms and mechaics as opposed to the old system where majority spells were just manipulating a value and attaching it either to a touch or projectile.
Also if you take a hard look at how many spell effects you actually use as spells, you realize pretty quickly that ther eis more illusion of a choice than actual choice. And tyhis is the problem with a lot of older tabletop systems and video games. You might have 100+ spells, but what does iot ever matter when only 10 of them ever truly functioon.
Skyrim's system was a step towards a better direction, it was hampered by spillitinga lot of potential spells into shouts and some bad decisions. It was a shame tyaht they cut spellmaking, but then again making a actually working spellmaking system is hard and while I like spellmaking in Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion, far too often its a gamebreaking tool as opposed to something that should be a part of gameplay.

If I have to pick a current favorite, it'd be Outward's. I love how it's not essentially just 1 spell = 1 effect. You have to piece together individual spells and/or have the correct requirements to get tangible results, making it actually feel like spellcasting. And skills and spells from different classes can combo well with one another. Plus, the visuals look nice and pretty diverse.
    [Some examples:
Equip a torch/lantern > cast Flamethrower > blow fire at enemy.
Bring a Cold Stone > cast Sigil of Ice > cast Mana Push in the sigil > Frost Push takes effect.
If there are nearby human corpses/remains, cast Reveal Soul > cast Spark on a revealed soul > you recover mana.
Cast Dez and Egoth runes > Runic Protection > cast Egoth and Dez runes (in that order) > Runic Protection is consumed and Runic Heal takes effect on you.
Here's a long example. Not exactly a spell procedure but a strategy involving dealing Ethereal damage from different sources/spells. (Also I really didn't have to write this here but I got started and so now it's too late, I'm committing. lol Sorry for the wall of text!):
    > Cast Haunting Beat to deploy a Ghost Drum.
-- Ghost Drum applies Haunted hex (which reduces Ethereal resistance) on all enemies within its radius.
    > cast Shim and Fal runes to deploy a Runic Trap (which deals Ethereal damage) inside the Ghost Drum's radius
    > Cast Mist Boon (which buffs your Ethereal damage and resistance).
    > Apply an Ethereal infusion on your weapon using a Spiritual Varnish or the Infuse Mana spell.
-- Ideally, you already have an Ethereal Infusion applied in advance so that you can keep the Mist Boon if you are using Infuse Mana as that spell will consume the Mist Boon.
    > Lure enemies to your Runic Trap.
-- Enemies (now with lower Ethereal resistances after entering the Ghost Drum's radius) take damage from the Runic Trap.
    > Hit Ghost Drum with a weapon to have it send an Ethereal projectile to all enemies within its radius.
-- Better if you also hit enemies with your weapon at the same time to also deal some physical damage (and Ethereal damage from the infusion), plus more if your weapon also has elemental damage. Hitting enemies will also likely stagger or knock them down if they weren't already, as Runic Trap also deal impact damage.
-- If the fight gets taken outside of the Ghost Drum's radius, enemies affected by the Haunted hex will still be affected.
    > Cast Torment to deal Ethereal damage and apply Sapped to all enemies affected by Haunted.
-- Also works if you need to deal damage from a distance for a while.
-- Better if you have cast Jinx to apply other hexes on your enemies before casting Torment.
    > Repeat Runic Trap, hitting the Ghost Drum, and Torment as you need.
-- Enemies that got hit by the Ghost Drum's projectile and are within its radius will get hit with Aetherbomb (which also deals Ethereal damage) after several seconds.

I liked Dragon Dogma's magic as well. Didn't really get to do the massive spells but I was enjoying using supportive spells to help my pawns.
Skyrim's magic got repetitive after a while, but it works fine. A specific thing I liked was the feel of warding against spells. Was not really something I used in my first runs, but I got more fun out of that mechanic when I made a mod that included a custom ward that also affects nearby allies. :D
I've yet to get to Divinity: Original Sin 2 but I've played a good deal of the first one. I enjoyed the magic (and combat) there as well.

Definitely Dragons Dogma, even Two Worlds 2 was alright. It's not just the spells themselves, but the mechanics on jow they're used, equipped, switched between, created, etc.
I have to disagree on Skyrim though. Skyrim had the worst spellcasting in TES series.

I really like Tyranny's spellcasting system. You can combine different sigils into spells and when I played this game I really felt like this powerful mage that is barely able to control magic that he is using.

For me, the all time favourites are Arx Fatalis, where you need to draw runes into the air with your mouse, Dungeon Master where you combined different runes in a semi-logical manner (strength of spell + element + form etc.) and Legend of Grimrock 2 where it's almost like a combination of the two: you draw runes to a 3x3 runegrid where different runes have different meanings ala DM. I really need to play Tyranny as that system sounded very interesting. I wonder why this is the first time I hear about its magic system O.o

Ryzom had a similar way of making your own spells with "bricks", but way less tought out, permissive and interesting. I'd like to see this kind of things more in video games, I've always loved the concept of having a set pool of points to distribute how you want to make your own skills, character builds or even your team. It's also very practical for game design and balance as you mostly need to insure similar effects have similar costs and restrain the most OP combinations (or not) :)
There also are the systems like Arx Fatalis and The Void with drawing sigils with your mouse to cast spells which are a cool concept but very tricky to implement.
Another spellcasting system I like is the one in Magicka, you have to combine elements on the fly while dodging all the chaos and have to make do with a lot of interactions between environmental effects too :D
And let's not forget Path of Exile who expended on FFVII materias in a great way :)

It's nice to know that at least some modern games are still following the path of some games from long ago in trying to make a magic system that truly feels like magic. I remember being blown away by Ultima 5 as a kid, and a while later by the magic in Asheron's Call. I don't even know if you can play Asheron's Call any more, and Ultima 5 has aged badly enough that it's hard to recommend even though I love it, but their magic systems were astonishingly deep.
Especially Asheron's Call, with its spell economy. It was a MMORPG, and to encourage magic users to keep their spells secret, the more a spell was used across the entire game with all its players, the weaker it got. Alternatively, if you discovered a spell nobody else knew or used, it would be more powerful than normal, to reward you for delving into the secrets of magic and keeping them, well, secret. The system didn't end up working all that well once people figured out the way spell formulas were coded in game and everybody could know every spell, but in concept it was a really interesting system that made magic feel truly magical and mysterious.

I didn't play any other games here apart from Tyranny. And it's spell system is pretty much the best I had in any game as well. You should play an OLD PC game called Sacrifice. If you don't mind some older graphics the game play is amazing. Each level you have to pick a god/Element to follow for that level and each choice gives you a spell. The spells combined with gameplay is a ton of fun. I think the game was ahead of its time.

I almost couldn't agree more with your list, Morty :) Only thing I would change is Skyrim WITH MODS to No. 1, [or Dragon's Dogma (if we insist on unmodded games)].
Tyranny had lots of great ideas, and it was a damned shame there never was a second game or at least some sizeable dlc - but hitting the right trainers at the right time, so you didn't lose out on your spellcasting stats was a huuuge pain in the butt. I remember using some sort of cheat mod or savegame editor or something to ameliorate that.
I'm giving Outward another go right now, after your review convinced me that it's worth slogging through the first couple hours or so. Really looking forward to becoming a rune mage :)

I haven't played Tyranny, but the setting and the spell crafting system are very appealing. I usually don't play spellcasters, but in Tyranny there is a good reason to do so.
I think I'd be interesting with a game that puts more emphasis on different utility spells. Maybe a game where the main challenge is survival or other practical, but seemingly mundane things. Not necessarily the type of gameplay as "modern survival games" (it could be all kinds of gameplay solutions, like text based/choose your adventure). The idea though would be that spells would allow the character to make fire, despite wind and rain, track animals, find water, unlock locks, persuade others, haggle, disinfect wounds, reduce pain, illuminate dark spaces, make make a flower bloom, make people laugh and dance, communicate over distances, read intentions of others, maybe perform rites that bring fertility to land, or curse others. As opposed to being "Tim the Enchanter": ruclips.net/video/aZJZK6rzjns/видео.html&ab_channel=zabakka

I like the spellcasting in Diablo 2 and several Diablo-likes (Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, PoE, Last Epoch, Torchlight 2). With Titan Quest/Grim Dawn being my favorite system.
It's simple, it works well, and it's as complex as you want it to be, ie: just the mouse and a hotkey or two, or so many spells playing feels like playing the piano.

  • @GreenOne01

Have you ever played Arx Fatalis?
It's spell crafting system consists of drawing rune "words" on screen from a rune alphabet in order to cast spells. If I remember correctly, you can find words in the world as you play, but you can also experiment by trying different rune combinations on your own. It's a unique system in a great old game. The game can be a bit janky by today's standards, but it would be worth your time to at least check it out sometime if you haven't already!

My favorite spell casting system is unfortunately from a game that can only be played through piracy nowadays, which is the Eldritch rune casting system from Eternal Darkness.
In essence, the spells were just a static shield, a damage bolt, a character buff, and a regen, but combining and enhancing the spells mid combat was incredibly satisfying.

I like how spells start out small to medium and scale up as you keep putting more points in them, I like the synergies, I like the tree structure where you get access to more powerful magic as you commit to a specialization. And I really like that you have to make hard choices. No master of everything with infinite respec in this game.

They're fun, but the numbers are limited. IIRC I mostly went between dropping meteors from stealth to open a combat to alternating between a 7 or 8 target Mark of Flame and the Lightning Storm ability. With enough mana regen you can infinitely chain those for AoE stuns that keep enemies from acting. Good feeling of power, but in the long run makes combat feel pointless.
