    This was an awesome video, i’m still running inboard drums on spoke (Dayton) wheels right now but I’m sure in the future I’ll be dealing with these. Nice to see a real guy working on a real truck, not an engineer in a labcoat going over all kinds of useless info.

    I love disc brakes, I usually don’t use the dust shield, you can actually rebuild the calipers for about $100 usd very easy, the problem is Bendix don’t sell you the parts here, I got mine from Europe, go figure!!

    Engine brake use especially with the Allison, really helps too. The Eaton is just not smooth, and shifts constantly in between use. I feel it spends kore time down shifting that slowing down.

    Love servicing disc brakes, super easy. The issue I have with them, is the calipers are constantly seizing up. With the long winters, and running the fleet from Alberta to Yellowknife, they take a shit kicking. Still a lot easier, and cleaner, than doing a full brake job on a drum brake setup.

    • @jonathanjackson5497
      @jonathanjackson5497 3 года назад +1

      Hi There, do you mean that the slide pins seize up? If so you need fully sealed pins. The Webb calipers are fully sealed. If you have water inside the brake mechanism and the internals are seizing up then its likely that your air chamber is letting water into the caliper. This is the number one water ingress point on calipers, the boot in the front end of the air chamber has to be perfect (and sealed onto the pushrod) otherwise water will get into the caliper mechanism.

    • @rookiebuilds251
      @rookiebuilds251 3 года назад +1

      @@jonathanjackson5497 the slide pins seize, or the adjusting mech seizes. Sometimes it’s as simple as a rock getting wedged behind the piston. They’re great for regular highway use, but don’t stand up to gravel roads. Our units run the dempster highway, which is a long stretch of dirt road that beats up the equipment pretty good. Way more abs issues with the disc brake units compared to the ones running drums. Still, I do prefer working on the disc brake units.

    • @jonathanjackson5497
      @jonathanjackson5497 3 года назад +1

      @@rookiebuilds251 OK, thats cool, good to hear you like working on them, they do work very well. Just remember to keep an eye on the air chamber, if you see any crud or rust on the pushrod when you remove it then it needs changing. Its as important to look carefully at the air chamber as it is the caliper.

    I still prefer drums. Changing that rotor is at least a couple hours all in. Drums I change the shoes and drums every time and I'm in it for 45 minutes about tire off n back on. I know disc's are better on the road, stopping, heat. Etc but I still prefer drums if for no other reason than simplicity

    Great job on the brake job

  •  5 лет назад +2

    Drum brakes work better at gross. Drums don’t fade as quickly either. Disk brakes are smoother and when light they have a better feel. But loaded down, I want drums. Did a month with a Pete with disks and the freight liner with drums gives much more confidence behind the pedal.

    • @user-ln7of9gs4s
      @user-ln7of9gs4s 5 месяцев назад

      I disagree. The videos are on showing the differences. Some trucks have pedals that are just not responsive. It’s not a problem with the brakes, it’s usually a problem with the brake proportioning.

    There’s also an indent in the casting on the caliper bracket and caliper that line up once the pads have worn down to their limit.

  • @codyburnworth76

    We're going to be adding a new truck to our fleet and we've never had disk brakes before, and I'm not sure I like the idea of them. I find brake shoes and drums pretty simple and quick to do, now I got to worry about calipers freezing up here in the rust belt and looks to me like the hub has to come off to do the caliper? Granted I usually pull hub to put new wheel seals in anyways when I put new drums on, guess that's no biggie. Are the calipers going to be problematic like I'm assuming? It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure. Road salt and brime is a bad combination lol

    Try using genuine pads they won’t break up. Change them sooner and you won’t get disc fractures. Wind off 4 clicks and you won’t burn the piston seals. Otherwise everything else was good 🤙
